RELEASE REVIEW: IN TOO DEEP by J. Kenner

IN TOO DEEP RB BANNERIn Too Deep, an all-new sexy standalone by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner, is LIVE!

10 - October - In Too Deep

Hannah Donovan is not my type.

Intellectual and career-focused, she’s a lawyer, and an intimidatingly beautiful one, at that. I’d rather pump iron than open a book, and the only reason I’d go to court would be for a traffic ticket.

She’s the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen. So how can I turn down her plea that I pretend to be her fiancé for one weekend?

But I never expected our pretend kisses to feel so real … or for it to lead to a wild night in bed that will forever stand out as the highlight of my sex life.

Our performance convinces everyone, but it was never meant to be more than a fantasy. A short term gig before reality sets back in.

I can’t imagine ever being good enough for her, but I’m hooked. And now I’m determined to do whatever it takes to make this fake engagement real.

**In Too Deep is part of a binge read series by New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, and #1 International bestselling author of the million copy Stark series, J. Kenner.

Each book in the series is a STANDALONE novel with NO cliffhanger and a guaranteed HEA!

IN TOO DEEP_TEASER 2.5

My Review

The connotative meanings when it comes to the title for Mr. October’s book has a number of implications in regards to the hero and heroine, and as the story line progresses, it’s clear that both characters are in too deep, whether it be due to the complications of their fake romance feeling a little bit too real or the fact that the hero is quite smitten with the heroine and has a difficult time downplaying those feelings or it could be the reasons behind Hannah’s need for a fake engagement or even what she has to wade through with her mother and stepfather that has her extremely frustrated and panicked.

Regardless of the culprit, figuring out a way for both of them to get what they want is their highest priority, and when Hannah and Matthew figure out that they might just be on the same page when it comes to what they truly want from one another and their ‘fake’ relationship, which means that they need to find a way to turn fantasy into reality without anyone catching on to how their engagement started and that there’s more at stake than they ever thought possible when Matthew agreed to Hannah’s plan, even if he felt she was out of his league.

The fake engagement, fake relationship trope is one I know well, and while there seems to be a lot of romance stories that center around this plot line, most that I’ve read lately bring something fresh and/or unique to the story, which is all I need to not make what I read feel so monotonous. In Too Deep works its own distinct angle when it comes to the structure of the story and the reason behind the need to role play as an engaged couple, and it’s clear what the hero and the heroine have to gain from their arrangement, even if what they realize perhaps complicates things…it’s a complication that, I think, they’ll both end up wanting and in some ways, needing.

There’s only Mr. November and Mr. December left to meet, which makes me curious about the finale and how J. Kenner is going to give her Men of the Month boys and their significant others the sendoff they deserve…I can’t wait to find out!

My Review

Atticus is most certainly a love story, but not in the usual sense of the term. It’s a unique tale that illustrates the power of unconditional love and the fact that the only way that a person can have/find/hold onto love is if she loves herself first, understanding her true worth based on who she is to herself and not necessarily as other people see her, and while that may take time and it may cause heartache and pain, it’s essential to living a full and happy life…it’s essential in order to revel in the ordinariness of life and understand one’s true place…one’s true path regardless of any road blocks or bad experiences that may have to be dealt with in order to get there.

The two main characters of Atticus are Hazel Roundtree and Atticus, her dog who almost wasn’t her dog because she contemplated not helping the pup when she found him. But in deciding to stop and help Atticus even though no one ever stopped to help her, she finds out the true meaning of unconditional love and while Atticus isn’t the most behaved dog in the world, he’s hers and he teaches her, not only how to take care of him and seek out help when she can’t do it alone, but he also shows her how to love herself…how to care for herself when it seems like no-one else will or can. Atticus gives Hazel hope; he gives her a caring companion; he gives her a best friend who understands more than she’ll ever know. Atticus gives her a purpose…a second chance. He helps her find herself and in doing so, he allows her to be ready when someone comes into her life that’s worthy of her mind, her heart, and her soul.

Relationships are a necessity in life and just when Hazel thinks she has no-one and nothing, she finds the one animal she never knew she needed, Atticus, and through him, Hazel finds a whole cast of characters who become as essential to her as Atticus, and it’s with their help…their guidance that this dog and his owner learn to traverse through this thing called life and find a way to do more than just survive…more than just exist and that opens up a world of possibilities for them both.

S. Bennett does a fantastic job of creating both a light-hearted and an emotional feel to this story, which is fitting considering that that’s how life works…there are highs and lows and ups and downs throughout the course of one’s existence and it’s in those moments, both the good and the bad, that people learn who they really are and what they’re really capable of, and boy are Hazel and Atticus worth more than they think!

RELEASE REVIEW: End Game by Toni Aleo

End Game by Toni Aleo is AVAILABLE NOW!

This is going to be Ryan Justice’s year. It’s his last year of college and his last year as a hockey player for the Bellevue Bullies. He’s making all the plays in preparation for achieving his dream of being drafted into the NHL.

This is Sofia Castilleja’s beginning. She is starting her college career as a star member of Bellevue’s brand-new gymnastics team. She’s going to tumble her way to success, first in school and then by realizing her dream of opening her own gym.

Ryan and Sofia didn’t see each other coming, but once they meet, they can’t look away. Their dreams are destined to take them in opposite directions. But it doesn’t take them long to realize that waking up to reality together may be better than dreaming alone.

My Review

The meaning of ‘end game’ varies based on its context. If someone asked a high school senior what his/her end game is, I’m sure they would respond with the college they plan to attend and the degree they plan to achieve. But in the sports’ world, a place where possibilities seem endless, the ultimate end game for any athlete is to reach the professional level…to get paid for a sport s/he loves and to reap the benefits of everything that s/he gave up and endured in order to reach that pinnacle of success.

The end game for Ryan Justice who’s a senior in college and Sofia Castilleja who’s a freshman in college, while slightly different due to their collegiate level, center on the sport that they’ve dedicated their lives to, making the ultimate goal for Ryan – the NHL – and for Sofia, a solid four years as a gymnast for the Bellevue Bullies and a chance to take her gymnastic skills to the highest level.

Due to Ryan and Sofia’s goal driven game plan along with their determination and ambition to succeed, neither one wanted any form of distraction to invade their life, but sometimes, the best kind of complication is the one that no one sees coming, and while it makes that person question what s/he wants out of life and if his/her dreams are worth sacrificing, ultimately, what matters most is what that person can’t live without, and for Ryan and Sofia, even though it takes them a bit to realize what their heart was telling them from their very first encounter, their end game changes and expands to include more than just the sport they love, which offers more opportunities to live, to love, and to be happy.

I really enjoyed how Toni Aleo set up Ryan and Sofia’s story line. Aleo does a great job of illustrating who these two dynamic athletes are, but she also allows readers to see who they are as human beings as well. Their attraction to one another was instantaneous, but they both fought it, which I think adds realism to the story; Ryan and Sofia have been focused on their sports 100%, so a distraction of someone who intrigues them…someone who they seem to connect with…someone who they have chemistry with could take their eyes off of their end game, and at the beginning, they don’t know much about each other, but once they get to know each other, all bets are off and things between them start to heat up, forcing them to take a hard look at their goals…at their desires…at the idea that maybe there’s more to life than a sport and the need to be the best at it.

I’m a sports romance fanatic and each and every time I read one of Toni Aleo’s hockey romances, I’m reminded of just why I love this troupe. Ryan and Sofia’s story is a great read that explores people’s goals and dreams and what they’re willing to do when they’re end game becomes about so much more than they ever thought it would.

My Review

I’m a huge fan of Lexi Blake’s romantic suspense stories/series, so the fact that she just released book one in a new series has me all kinds of excited. In Order of Protection, Blake introduces readers to a world ‘where love and law’ not only coexist but also direct characters’ words and deeds, in both positive and negative ways.

Henry Garrison and Win Hughes shared a brief fling at a time where they both desperately needed to connect with someone, and for two blissful weeks, they gave into their desires and then went their separate ways, never considering the fact that they would reconnect in an unwanted but necessary way due to Win’s arrest for murder. But things become even more complicated when Henry learns the truth of who Win is, which not only makes him not want to take her on as a client, but it also brings out his ‘Monster of Manhattan’ persona, which is not something Win ever wanted to see.

Henry’s ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ behavior didn’t sit too well with me; I struggled with understanding why he became a grade A asshole once he found out who Win really was. Don’t get me wrong, I get that she withheld important information, especially given his history with being in the public eye, but to turn from the charming and sexy man who spent two blissful weeks with Win to the cold and detached lawyer who refuses to understand why she just wanted to be with him as herself not as Taylor Winston-Hughes and all that comes with that moniker just didn’t sit well with me, and I’m glad that Win didn’t put up with his jerkish behavior because I wanted to slap him in the face more than once. Henry does wise up, even if it takes him a bit to get there, which is why I didn’t completely write him off, but I did find it incredibly difficult to mesh his two personalities together and give him a pass for his nasty words and actions towards Win.

Win has been through hell and then some, but through it all, she has demonstrated true strength and courage. She’s an incredibly smart woman who won’t allow anyone to walk all over her and that includes the man who made her body hum but now only makes her head and heart hurt. The circumstances that Win finds herself in are high stakes, so she needs someone to represent her whose used to winning against all odds, and Henry is that attorney, but Win will have to endure his wrath and his hot and cold demeanor if she wants to prove her innocence, which she does, but not without proving to him exactly the woman she is and how lucky he would be to have her on his side in life and in love.

I definitely enjoyed Henry and Win’s story, and although I couldn’t decide if I wanted to hit or hug Henry throughout the entire story, he does redeem himself…it just took me a bit to get over his previous behavior and feel like he had Win’s back with everything that she faces in the book.

4 Poison Apples

Excerpt

Henry glanced up at the clock. Two thirty p.m. Somehow he’d expected Win to show up bright and early this morning. He’d woken up and made a pot of coffee, and he’d gone over all the ways he would explain to her that this was a bad idea.

Because it was still a bad idea.

Alicia might have given in to Noah and Drew Lawless’s blackmail, but she would be back at some point. Then there was the fact that he dealt with unsavory clients on a daily basis. He took on high-profile cases and often got dragged through the mud along with the client.

There were plenty of people out there who hated him. Loathed him and despised the very fact that he existed and cheered if he failed. He was used to it. Sweet little Win was not and would be horrified.

So he was going to tell her how amazing their night together was and then turn her down gently.

Except she hadn’t shown up and that bugged the hell out of him.

She’d been the one to claim she would be here despite the fact that he’d told her not to come. She’d told him she didn’t care what he thought.

It was perverse, but if he’d had her number, he might have called and said a few things about setting expectations and then not meeting them.

He started another pot of coffee. This was completely foolish. She’d put some distance between the two of them and realized how little they had in common. At least one of them had some sense.

The scent of French roast hit the air and he realized he was pro-crastinating. He was putting off the moment when he had to step back into the city and face the music. He would have to work his ass off to find anyone who wanted to hire a lawyer with his tarnished reputation. It didn’t matter that his addiction issues had never cost a client a dime. The perception would be there, and perception was over half the battle in life.

He should pack up tonight and leave it all to the agent. It’s what he should have done yesterday, but he’d enjoyed spending time with David, showing him places on the island and telling him stories.

It was time to go home now. Time to forget about pretending to be someone he couldn’t afford to be anymore. Time to put away thoughts of quiet and peace and get back to being the Monster of Manhattan. That was the only way he was going to survive.

The Monster of Manhattan didn’t give in to urges. He plowed through all problems with a single-minded, ruthless intent. The Monster didn’t need attention, though he tended to get it. Attention didn’t matter to the Monster. Money mattered. Power mattered.

He would get them both back.

The Monster certainly didn’t need some do-gooder in his bed. He would select a woman, rationally discuss his needs with her, and pay her for her services, whether they be as a plus-one to gatherings or as a body in bed. That was how he would view it. Transactional.

Transactional was safe.

So he was going to stop being such a whiny asshole and be grateful that Win had some sense.

A knock broke through the quiet of the house.

He practically ran for the door.

He opened it and there was Win, standing in the soft light of the afternoon, her hair up in a ponytail. She was wearing denim shorts and a blousy, feminine shirt. She had a bag of groceries in one hand and what looked like a duffel in the other.

“I know you said I shouldn’t come back, but you’re wrong and I’m going to give you all my reasons why.”

He didn’t care. She was here. He walked straight up to her and cupped that pretty face in his hands and kissed her for all he was worth.

Fuck transactional. He wanted something real for once in his damn life.

When he came back up, he was rewarded with a soft look in her eyes, her lips curving into a small smile.

“No arguing with me?”

He did have some problems they should discuss. “You’re late.”

Her smile went brilliant. “I had some things to clear up. I thought if you didn’t mind, I might stay with you for a few nights.”

He took the bag of groceries out of her hand and led her inside. “I think that sounds like a great idea.”

“This is way easier than I thought it would be,” she admitted. “Have you had lunch? I could whip up some sandwiches and we could have a picnic.”

He stashed the grocery bag in the fridge. She set down her duffel, and that made it much easier to scoop her up and into his arms. “I know exactly what I want for lunch.”

Her eyes went wide, but she didn’t struggle at all. Her arms went around his shoulders as he carried her to the big bedroom.

It had been cozy in his old room, but he needed more space if she was going to live here with him for a few weeks.

He stopped at the edge of the big bed he’d had brought in after he’d inherited the place. It was the only room he’d redone, with the thought of spending long weekends with his friends up here. He never had managed the time, but now he was happy he’d spent the cash to do it because he could share it with her.

The last few weeks of being Henry before going back to the real world.

He set her down on the bed and pulled his shirt over his head. He wasn’t playing around this time. That was for later. It had been entirely too long since he’d had her.

He needed her.

He knew it was something he should question, even be slightly afraid of, but he didn’t care in the moment. All that mattered was she was here and he could put off any thoughts of letting her go for a few days. He could sink into her.

She was his reward for every crappy thing he’d been through in the last couple of years.

NY Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake lives in North Texas with her husband, three kids, and the laziest rescue dog in the world. She began writing at a young age, concentrating on plays and journalism. It wasn’t until she started writing romance and urban fantasy that she found the stories of her heart. She likes to find humor in the strangest places and believes in happy endings no matter how odd the couple, threesome, or foursome may seem.

My Review

I’ve always believed in the positive power of music…that its melody and lyrics are restorative…that getting lost in its sounds and its words heal the soul and the heart in unimaginable ways…

But, I also understand music’s darker side…the one that allows cries of pain to get lost in the cacophony of noises…the one that forces emotions to swirl out of control…the one that hides the torment of the soul.

Music most definitely has the power to heal…the power to soothe…the power to lift up spirits in a way that words alone cannot always accomplish, but music also has the power to undo a person’s carefully constructed life in a way that he can’t come back from because he becomes lost to the array of feelings brought forth and he becomes their prisoner and loses the battle.

The dichotomy of music has never been articulated better than in the beliefs of Cromwell Dean and Bonnie Farraday. At the beginning of A Wish For Us, music for Cromwell is tormenting, agonizing, and too emotional; it forces him to open himself completely and feel all that it has to show him, and that’s not something, given his past, that he feels he’s able to endure. For Bonnie, music is EVERYTHING; it’s a bevy of sounds, words, and feelings that are meant to be experienced FULLY, offering one’s mind and heart to where music leads it. That’s not to say that Bonnie doesn’t struggle with keeping her beat…her melody…her song alive when life tries to overpower them, because she does…it’s just that when that happens, knowing that she has someone in her corner…someone who understands music’s intricacies and its limitless possibilities, she’s able to endure…able to reconnect in a way that binds her soul with his and that’s not something that can be destroyed easily given the fact that the songs somehow find a way to play on.

Tillie Cole writes Cromwell and Bonnie’s story in such a way that makes it impossible to not feel every single one of the emotions that are felt by the characters throughout the course of the book; there’s nothing about A Wish For Us that feels fabricated…that feels contrived…that feels unoriginal, and it’s because of Cole’s ingenuity when it comes to the construction of her plot line, of her characters, of the drama infused into the story line that weaves the story’s lessons…its beauty…its darkness and its lightness around readers’ hearts and souls, pleading with us to understand its teachings about life, about love, and about music.

Cromwell and Bonnie’s story is meant to be more than simply read; it’s meant to be EXPERIENCED; it’s meant to be entered into with an open mind and an open heart, which means that going in blind…not reading reviews…not forming opinions based on other readers’ assessments is the only way that readers can truly visualize and accept all that the story offers, especially when things get difficult for the story’s characters and the possibilities of how everything will be resolved aren’t quite clear.

‘The Wedding Date’ gets a sexy twist in the new hilarious rom-com from Lila Monroe!
Is there anything worse than playing maid-of-honor to your bitchy college nemesis? Try it when she’s marrying your DAD! Olivia Chambers doesn’t know what she’s done to deserve this karmic retribution, but she needs a date to the wedding from hell – and fast. She’s used to matchmaking billionaires, but now she needs a Prince Charming of her own. Someone handsome and famous enough to make bridezilla and her minions drool with envy…

Someone like hottie ex-NFL star Ryan Callahan.

Ryan is looking for love. Well, the fake kind. She’ll play his perfect date – if he’ll play hers.

The deal is simple! Or is it? Take one week in the Florida Keys, a dose of sizzling sexual tension, a madcap wedding, and some seriously humid frizzy hair, and Ryan and Olivia have the recipe for disaster… or maybe the time of their lives.

But can Olivia let down her guard long enough to let Ryan sweep her off her feet? And will Ryan take his eyes off the (business) prize long enough to see what’s right in front of him?

Find out in the hot, delicious new novel from Lila Monroe!

Review

So far, Lila Monroe’s Billionaire Bachelors series has been all about matching up rich, handsome men with classy, attractive women in a business arrangement of sorts, and while the matched pair goes into their agreement understanding the stakes, what was meant to be a professional interaction quickly morphs into something more…something rather unbusinesslike and very personal, and through the first two billionaires’ stories, readers have been right along with the couple, witnessing their sexual chemistry, their mutual attraction, and their witty exchanges, waiting for them and their partners to realize that what they feel for one another is so much more than friendly appreciation.

In Wild Card, Monroe places the matchmaker herself, Olivia Chambers, into the ‘dating’ world that she’s created, finding herself in need of a plus one for another one of her father’s weddings, but this time, there are even higher stakes due to the nature of Olivia’s relationship with her soon-to-be step mother, so Olivia’s need for a date trumps her unease over teaming up with one of her fussiest clients, ex-NFL star, Ryan Callahan, and while these two may not see or even understand how quickly things heat up between them, readers see through their polar opposite personalities and the series of misfortunate but nonetheless comedic situations they finds themselves in for what they truly are – a perfect match.

Karma really must have it in for Olivia for her father to choose her college nemesis as his new bride, and that idea is confirmed as Olivia deals with bridezilla and finds herself in a number of chaotic situations, all resulting from people and an environment that seem hellbent on making Olivia suffer. But there is one person who has Olivia’s back and while it’s difficult for her to wrap her brain around her attraction to Ryan and the way he makes her feel, she’s quite happy with him by her side, which means that their business deal may need to be amended as long as Ryan wants to make things a lot more personal than professional and a lot more permanent than temporary.

Olivia and Ryan’s story is filled with amusing banter, embarrassing moments, and steamy situations. Try as they might, these two can’t deny the pull they feel towards one another despite the ‘roles’ they thought they were playing, and while it complicates a number of areas in their life, they both need to decide if the business side of themselves is more important than the personal side.

COVER REVEAL: MESS ME UP by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Mess Me Up

Series: Bear Bottom Guardians MC #1

Author: Lani Lynn Vale

Genre: MC Romance

Release: September 6, 2018

Cover Design: Cover Me Darling, LLC

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40497128-mess-me-up

When Rome Pierce moved to Bear Bottom, Texas, it was his intention to lay low. To not be seen. To find a way to heal his body and soul—as well as his son’s.

Nobody would know by looking at him that he used to play professional football. Not with the Bare Bottom MC cut covering his back, and definitely not with his friendly smile completely obliterated.

No longer is there charm in each smooth word that comes out of his mouth. What’s left is an angry, bitter, scared man that’s terrified one day he’s going to wake up and his entire world is going to be gone.

Nobody knows what drove him to leave the game he loved—nobody but her.

She’s the one person that has helped him make it through the dark days and even darker nights. She’s the bright and shining star in his pitch-black sky.

And he doesn’t even know her name.

He should be afraid that she knows things that not anyone—not even his best friend—knows.

Yet, with each encounter, he gives what little bit of his soul remains, and before he knows it only two people on this earth—one dying, and one too afraid to live—make his life worth living.

Until one day he has to choose—the love of his life, or the life he brought into this world.

Two impossible situations. One decision that would change him forever.

I’m a married mother of three. My kids are all under 9, so I can assure you that they are a handful. I’ve been with my paramedic husband now for ten years, and we’ve produced three offspring that are nothing like us. I live in the greatest state in the world, Texas.
