BLOG TOUR: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: The Girl and Her Ren by Pepper Winters

The Girl and Her Ren by Pepper Winters
The Ribbon Duet Book 2
Publication Date: June 5th, 2018
Genre: Coming of Age Romance

ebook (1)

“What do you do when you write down all your secrets? No…that’s not enough. What do you do when you write down all your secrets and the one person who should never read them does?

I’ll tell you what you do.

You hope.”

REN

Ren didn’t know the meaning of love until he took Della for his own.

To begin with he hated her, but as the months bled into years, he learned the opposite of hate, dedicating his life to giving her everything.

Every sacrifice, every gift, he gave wholeheartedly.

But then love turned to lust and ruined everything.

DELLA

I was stupid to write my secrets down, but I’d been stupid before so it was nothing new.

I couldn’t blame him, hate him, fix him.

I tried to move on without him.

But no matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to delete the secrets I’d written.

Until something happened.

Until he came back and read my stupid secrets.

And nothing was the same after that.

My Review

Pepper Winters’ Ribbon duet is one of the finest pieces of prose that I’ve read in quite some time, and there are a number of reasons for that assertion, but what it comes down to is the fact that Ren and Della’s story expands over decades, so readers are a part of their entire lifetime together, which means that we experience every single emotion they feel towards each other as well as their reactions to a multitude of events and situations that not only transform them both but also cause their relationship to ebb and flow, changing in ways they never thought possible.

In The Boy and His Ribbon, Pepper Winters introduced readers to the story of an unloved boy who had to endure what felt like a lifetime of abuse until he had the courage to break those chains and escape when he was 10 years old, but as she tells Ren’s story, Winters also must tell the tale of his companion, a little innocent baby girl who somehow found herself on Ren’s journey with him, dependent on him for everything regardless of how ill-equipped he seems.

Throughout the pages of Ren and Della’s story, readers witness Ren’s less than welcoming feelings towards his stowaway, but as he learns to coexist with Della and understands exactly what her needs are, she becomes essential to him…an extension of himself, and he refuses to allow anything to taint her life, even if it’s his own feelings towards the girl he raised as his own.

Through Della’s college assignment, she takes us back to where it all began and then moves us forward through time, experiencing Ren and Della’s highs and lows, their successes and failures, their pain and their elation, redefining who they are to one another despite Della’s lie and Ren’s avoidance.

In The Girl and Her Ren, Winters, once again, focuses on the boy and girl from the first story, but he is now an attractive and strong man and the girl is now a beautiful and passionate woman – a woman who no longer sees Ren as merely her protector, her brother, her family, which is why when the second half of their story is told, it begins with them apart, struggling to find their way in this world without their other half and no longer truly living because a part of themselves is missing with really no indication that it will or could be reclaimed.

Once again, readers get the second half of Ren and Della’s story through both of their perspectives – Della’s future self reflects on the events that led to where they were able to get while also allowing Ren to keep readers in the here and now, so that we understand exactly how everything occurred and how they endured everything that they faced.

Ren and Della’s story started in quite an unusual way…it continued amidst a path of trials and tribulations, and it ended on their own terms surrounded by more love than they ever thought possible, and while some readers may question their ending and might strongly feel it should have been told in a much different way, what we all need to remember is that it’s Ren and Della’s story to tell…it’s their lives that Pepper Winters is gifting readers with, so staying true to how they wanted it to end, regardless of the potential for criticism, honors who these two characters are, how they lived, and what they taught everyone around them about the most greatest gift in life – love because true love – ‘the kind that spans decades, endures heartbreak, and solidifies a bond that started as something other than love’ is the most precious gift than anyone can receive and I’m just so thankful that Pepper Winters gifted her readers with Ren and Della’s love story and allowed us to experience every aspect of it, told through their own voices, in its rawest and purest forms.

Excerpt

The fallen papers crunched beneath my boot as I shifted my weight, leaning into her, seeking an answer. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

She flinched, her eyes closing beneath an avalanche of pain.

This hurt.

Everything hurt.

“Della…please.” My calloused thumbs caressed her silky-soft skin, catching on her young perfection with my older imperfection.

Ten years separated us.

Ten years was an eternity when she was a babe and I was a boy, but now…it no longer held such power. I refused to let it because I didn’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t touch her the way I was touching her now.

She laughed quietly, full of torture and tragedy. “I did tell you. In a roundabout way.”

“You didn’t.”

“But I did.” She dared meet my eyes. “I never understood how I could touch you, hug you, kiss you, and you never knew. I didn’t know how I could hide my jealousy when you were with Cassie or later with your one-night stands. I lay awake at night analysing every sentence I said to you, amazed that you never heard what I’d been shouting for longer than I could remember.”

Blaire has never quite gotten over Jessie Beckett, the ex–NFL star whose kisses were hot enough to ignite the entire Eastern Seaboard. When he chose work over her, Blaire was left brokenhearted. Why else would she have married a skeezy two-timer, just to divorce him less than a year later?

Excerpt

It ended there.

Right. Forget about his mouth.

Or the way I sighed when he touched my shoulder.

The way my body quivered when his skin pressed against mine in the car.

“Stop!” I gritted my teeth and searched the kitchen. Cheaters often hid things in places that their spouse wouldn’t expect, like pantries and junk drawers, places that seemed obvious but weren’t. I’d once found a second cell phone in a cereal box.

Cheaters were like drug addicts.

They knew the perfect place to hide the drugs.

I shuddered.

Dirty. Toilets.

Not the best day I’d ever had, but marginally better than the sewer.

I spent the next thirty minutes with plastic gloves searching every crevice of that kitchen, patting down the inside of drawers, digging through trash. Nothing.

The guy was either a saint . .

Or we had a serious Dexter situation going on, and he knew exactly how to dispose of incriminating evidence.

Sexy male laughter jolted me from my search. I freaked, ran into the pantry, and shut the door just as Jessie’s face came into view.

Sweat trickled down my back.

Shit, shit, shit!

Oh, this was bad, so bad.

What man didn’twant to eat after coming home from the gym?

“Nice, man, she keeps the book on the bar?” Colin’s mocking voice at least made me feel like I wasn’t the only one who thought it was strange. “Fams always so classy.”

“Yeah,” Jessie agreed. “I think maybe it’s her way of reminding me how happy we were that one year.” He hesitated. “You know, the one where we actually did normal things like stay home and make dinner, and watch movies instead of going out all the time. That went to hell fast.”

Colin sighed.

“She writes a book about our best year, and then turns into this greedy person I don’t recognize and dream about murdering in her sleep.”

“Hey,” Colin warned. “I get it, I do, but she’s still my—”

“Sorry, man.”

“It’s fine, like I said, I get it.”

I plastered my ear to the door to listen harder. What did Colin mean? Why was he defending her? Why was Jessie saying sorry? I made a mental note to purchase the book and torture myself by reading it cover to cover.

“You contemplate murdering her while she sleeps,” Colin said in a weird tone, “and yet she’s still living here in this house with you? Tell me how that makes sense? You say she’s not the same person, but she never really was the person you thought she was. When are you going to get that?”

“She was different then, man. She was.” Jessie came to her defense so quickly I almost fell backward. He sounded like—he still had feelings for her. I turned my attention back to the door as footsteps neared the pantry. Oh hell. Not good.

I needed to get out. Fast.

I grabbed my cell and texted Colin.

And seconds later heard a ping.

“Another one of your sex buddies?” Jessie teased.

Colin paused and then, “Oh yeah, but this one’s been really hard to tame. You know the type, a bit schizo but so hot you don’t care that she asks to twist your nipples while she licks your nose.”

“Seriously?” Jessie choked.

“She likes noses. And snake tattoos, loves them.”

“Lucky for you.”

“I think it reminds her of the size of my dick, you know?”

I made a gagging noise, shifted on my feet, then texted again.

Me: Seriously! Trapped! And your dick can’t be the size of that python on your arm because that would mean you actually impale women on a daily basis.

Colin: Just call me Dracula.

I frowned.

Colin: Get it? The impaler.

Me: Look at that, basement dweller can joke! He’s got jokes! Meanwhile I’m going to starve to death in this pantry.

Colin: You mean around all that food?

“Wow, this girl must have skills if you’re that focused on your texts . . .” Jessie trailed off.

“She’s . . . unique,” Colin finally said.

My eyes narrowed. Was that a compliment? Did it matter? Why did I care? And why the hell did Jessie have ten different kinds of cereal—and all the boxes were full.

And alphabetized? Starting with Apple Jacks? Really?

Not that I’d resorted to more snooping.

Okay, so I’d resorted to more snooping.

But the fact that they were full was emotionally distressing. A full cereal box at my house lasts about one hot minute before I get a craving for Cheerios that even wine can’t cure.

“Hey”—Colin cleared his throat—“I need a favor.”

“Anything,” Jessie said quickly.

“I need a nice shirt for a date tonight, something . . . classy.”

Jessie laughed. “What? You can’t wear your own clothes?”

“You know I like your style better.” I rolled my eyes, has he seen that man’s closet? His white shirts are all ironed to within an inch of their lives. “Plus I want to impress this girl and I don’t have time to go grab a new shirt, we’re going on a late lunch date and I’m sweaty as hell, so please? Let me borrow a shirt, I’ll go home and shower, pair it with some nice jeans, and be inside her in no time.”

I glared at the door. Like I could actually see Colin’s smug expression. Why was my heart thumping? Why was I breathing like I was having trouble sucking in air?

He could date whomever he wanted.

I shifted on my feet as my face heated.

He was an attractive, successful man.

I crossed my arms.

Then uncrossed them nervously.

“Yeah, yeah,” Jessie finally said. “I’ll be right back, try not to burn down the kitchen or set the book on fire.”

“Shit, you read my mind,” Colin joked.

The sound of footsteps faded as Jessie walked toward the bedroom.

And then pantry door was jerked open.

I blinked up at him. “Thank you.”

“People . . . they pay you,” he said, leaning his large frame against the door while his muscles bulged beneath his sweat-soaked shirt, “for this?”

My eyes narrowed. “Yes! And I’m good at it.”

His smirk was wicked as he glanced behind me and then locked eyes. “Obviously.”

I shoved his chest. “I miscalculated the time, that’s all.” I tried squeezing past him, but he grabbed my arm and pulled me back into the pantry and closed the door.

“What the hell are you doing?” I hissed as he pressed me against the wall. “He’s going to find me!”

“A favor for a favor, spy girl.” Colin’s grin turned menacing. “I got Jessie out of the house, gave you my car, and saved your sorry ass. I get a favor.”

“I’m not sucking your nose and licking your tattoo, you psycho,” I said, repeating what he’d said earlier.

“Don’t knock it, you may love it.” He winked, and then stood his ground. “One favor.”

I sighed and gritted my teeth. “Fine.”

“A date,” he said triumphantly. “I want a date.”

“A date,” I repeated in a slightly panicked voice. “Like to dinner?”

“No, I was thinking the drive-in, we could make out, eat popcorn, I’d feel you up a bit—yeah, dinner.”

I smirked. “If I go to dinner with you . . . you’ll get me out of this godforsaken pantry with the full boxes of cereal?”

“Noticed that, did you?’

“He’s clearly not human.”

“I steal his Cocoa Puffs every chance I get.”

I nodded seriously. “I think my respect for you grew just now.”

“Ah, she likes cereal.”

“She’d also like to not get caught!”

“Go.” He shoved me toward the pantry door. “Run out the back and try not to trip and ruin your escape.”

“I don’t trip.” Of course, at that moment, I tripped over my own feet and almost face-planted into his lips.

He sighed, his expression worried and a bit stunned as Jessie’s voice carried to the kitchen. “Black okay?”

“Go.” Colin shoved me again. “Oh, and you’re picking me up. It seems I’m down a car.” He winked. “I’ll text you.”

“Yes!” My arms shot in the air. I punched the air a couple of times before clapping and shouting, “Way to go, Charlie! Nice save!”

I was so damn proud. I hoped she could hear me yelling. Her success felt better than any I’d ever had personally, and I’d known her for just a couple days.

Parental pride was incredible.

And I wasn’t alone in my feelings. When I stopped cheering for my daughter, I looked to my side to see that Thea had gotten off the blanket and was cheering too. Her smile was beaming, brighter than any I’d seen before.

“Couldn’t stay seated?” I nudged her elbow with mine.

“Quiet, gorgeous.”

Gorgeous.

I’d been given nicknames in the past by women. My girlfriend in high school had called me Lo-Lo. Emmeline used to call me darling. Alice had annoyed the fuck out of me by whispering stud in my ear. I hadn’t really liked any of them, not even Emmeline’s.

But Thea’s gorgeous was hot as hell.

Mostly because she said it with that smile.

She could call me an asshole or a douchebag with that smile and I wouldn’t care.

The Lies I’ve Told by J.L. Berg

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

From USA Today bestselling author J.L. Berg comes a brand new By the Bay stand-alone novel…

Everything was going according to plan…

After years of working my way up the corporate ladder, it was finally my time to shine. I was about to receive the promotion of a lifetime.

But just like that, my life was destroyed with a single career crushing email.

Now, I am headed back home to North Carolina, under the ruse of an extended vacation to help run the family inn while my sister is on maternity leave. After all, what is family for? Plus, a few days at the beach could definitely help uncomplicate this crazy life of mine.

Enter Aiden Fisher.

Aiden is a guest at my sister’s inn. He’s wicked hot, a huge flirt and has one of the sexiest British accents I’ve ever heard. But beyond all that, I see a darkness in his soul, as if he’s carrying a great weight upon his shoulders.

I find myself pushing back my trip home to Florida in hopes that maybe I’ll look into those hazel brown eyes and finally see truth shining back instead of lies. That maybe he’ll stop running and tell me the truth for once.

But you know what they say about liars? It takes one to know one and I’ve been telling the biggest lie of all – I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with Aiden.

And isn’t that the scariest truth of all?

My Review

Based on the title of the newest book in J.L. Berg’s By the Bay series, I knew that I was heading into an emotionally charged journey – one that would take time to understand the main characters’ respective pasts and what their hidden truths and their concealed secrets would mean in the present and if any kind of future could be built between them when it’s unclear if they truly know one another given the lies they’ve not only told to others but perhaps even believe themselves.

Millie McIntyre and Aiden Fisher clearly have one thing in common from the start; instead of facing their problems head-on, they run away, which allows them to almost forget about the very reasons that sent them running in the first place…But, as their lies seem to compound, creating a deeper hole that could bury them, they’re so focused on staying ahead of the truth that when the lies are finally revealed, there’s nowhere to hide, which means that anything that was created under false pretenses has the ability to do irrevocable damage to Millie and Aiden’s head and heart.

I’m always interested in learning the whys when it comes to characters’ desires to move away from their hometown as soon as possible; Millie’s desire to be part of the fashion world is her reason for the abrupt departure, but the fact that she comes back home to escape the ‘reality’ of everything that happened to her down in Florida speaks to the fact that coming home again might just be her best decision.

Like Millie’s initial reaction, Aiden Fisher intrigued me from the moment he was introduced; there’s just nothing like a handsome man with a sexy British accent, but beneath Aiden’s attractive physique is a man who seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders – a pressure that creates a darkness around him, but until he’s ready to face the truth, his lies will continue to prevent him from moving forward and perhaps finding something worthwhile with Millie.

The small island town of Ocracoke, North Carolina, is the perfect place for Millie and Aiden to run because it has a comforting calmness to it, which is a need for both of them given the chaos that is swirling around in their heads.

The Lies I’ve Told is a sweet and sexy romance that has Berg’s signature emotional feel in it. Try as they might, Millie nor Aiden can fight their attraction to each other, so while they attempt to keep their defenses up and hold onto their insecurities, the passion that is just beneath the surface as well as the desire to bare all of their sins and lies to each other is what will have them going all in because even if what’s revealed destroys what they’re building, at least they stopped running from the truth for once in their life.

4.5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

My eyes bolted open as sunlight from the windows glared down at me.

Where am I?

I sat up, quietly stretching as if I had all the time in the world.

Because I did, right?

No job. No responsibilities.

Responsibilities…

Shit!

Breakfast for the guests!

I bolted out of bed, frantically searching for my clothes. Where were my clothes? I tried to think back to the night before, but it was blurry.

Hazy.

And then the hammering in my head began.

Shit, how much did I drink last night?

“Where are you running off to so early?”

The deep British accent had me stopping in my tracks.

Last night…

I turned on my heels, tugging on the short shirt I had on, wishing it were suddenly a dress. Or a robe.

Or anything longer than a shirt.

Aiden’s eyes perused my body with a wide grin on his face as he casually tucked his hands behind his head. I tried not to notice the way the muscles in his arms flexed.

Or the fact that, besides a carefully placed sheet, he was basically lying naked before me.

“Oh my God,” I whispered. My fingers raked through my hair as I tried to remember the night before. “We didn’t…did we?”

The question had him immediately sitting up in bed, causing that well-placed sheet to shift.

I gulped as all of him—and I did mean all of him—came into view.

Oh Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

I turned around, my cheeks flushing as heat spread through my body. He wasn’t just naked. He was naked and very much awake.

“You don’t remember?” he asked as I listened to the bed groan as he stood.

“No,” I admitted. “Do you?”

I heard the telltale sign of jeans being zipped, giving me the courage to turn back around. Sure enough, he was decent.

Well, as decent as a shirtless, hot-as-fuck Brit could be. God, I thought his muscles had muscles.

“Um, no,” he answered, but there was a hint of sadness to his eyes as he reached down to grab his shirt off the floor.

I let out a tiny whimper of protest as the black T-shirt slid down his body.

He really was beautiful.

I shook my head, trying to keep focused. “Oh, that’s great. Just fucking great. So, what happened here exactly?”

He pointed to the pile of clothes and the mostly empty alcohol bottle on the nightstand, that sadness drying up as he let out a breath and straightened, his features hardening. “I think that’s pretty clear.”

My arms folded across my chest before I realized that only brought my shirt higher up my waist. Aiden didn’t miss the extra peek of flesh either as I watched his grin widen.

“Nope, I don’t believe you. I don’t do one-night stands. Ever.”

“Ever?” he echoed, surprise written all over his stupid face.

“Yes. Ever. Why is that so hard to believe? Do I look like the one-night-stand kind of girl?”

“Well, right now. Sort of.”

But unlike Priest, Robbie doesn’t know what he’s helping Julien to fight. He doesn’t know what Julien did all those years ago. And with the anniversary of his sister’s death fast approaching, the time for explanations is running out.

My Review

Like the title of the series suggests, each book serves as one of the three main characters’ admission;s; Robbie’s revelations, in book one, brought these three complex and dynamically different males together, offering them a chance to explore if bringing a third person, Robbie, into an already established marriage between Joel ‘Priest’ Priestley and Julien Thornton was a possibility or if the ‘princess’ would serve as nothing more than plaything or a diverting pastime until he became no longer useful. Based on the events of Confessions: Robbie, it was made abundantly clear that Robbie is so much more than another body for their bed, and now that Priest and Julien have made room, not only in their lives, but also in their home and their hearts, it’s now someone else’s turn to confess…the problem is that Julien’s truths nearly tore him apart, so what they do to a bright and enigmatic male like Robbie depends on how long Julien keeps his secrets hidden and what Robbie’s reaction means for this newly created threesome.

It makes sense that Julien’s confessions/book would be edgier than Robbie’s book; Julien’s past, especially his guilt and grief over his sister’s death, is an albatross that he’s worn since the day she died; it suffocates him on a continual basis and now that it’s the anniversary of her death, the darkness is threatening to consume him, yet again, and while Priest knows Julien’s secrets and stands by him, perhaps Julien needs a little princess sunshine to show him how to let go of the pain and live a little longer in the light.

There’s only one Robbie Bianchi, which is probably a good thing given how big his personality is, but it’s also his larger than life demeanor that makes him the perfect addition to Priest and Julien’s relationship because if anybody can handle these two alpha males who both have their moments of broody assholeness, it’s Robbie, and with what Julien’s preparing to reveal, Robbie’s ability to remain positive and upbeat despite the circumstances that surround him is definitely a quality he’ll need to perfect with his two dominant men.

Ella Frank crafted the perfect series for her Princess, Prick, and Priest, and the fact that Julien’s Confessions ends in a cliffhanger actually doesn’t bother me because Priest’s revelations are the ones I’ve been waiting for and they’re the ones that will put all three of them on equal footing, which seems like a necessity given the dynamics of this threesome.

And, the fact that I just found out there will actually be a fourth book in the series – one that provides readers with insights into what their lives are like now that everything has been revealed – makes me that much more eager to get to Priest’s book because what comes after has to be all kinds of sexy and hawt;)

Chapter One

CONFESSION

Those who are meant to be yours will always find you.

“WE MEET again, Mr. Thornton.”

A shiver of awareness raced up Julien Thornton’s spine as he stood in the jail cell of a downtown L.A. police station where he’d been thrown around an hour ago for public intoxication.

He didn’t need to turn to know who was on the opposite side of those steel bars. That voice was the one he’d been hoping to hear when he’d made his “one call” and left a message after a generic voicemail. That voice? It had been on his mind since the last time he’d heard it, nearly two weeks earlier when he’d met—and attempted to steal the car of—a man who called himself Priest.

Julien pivoted on his heels, and when he did, he realized that he’d grossly underestimated the impact that Joel Priestley had had on him the first time around.

Oui, he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about him, that was true, and oui, he might’ve purposely provoked the police officer tonight hoping he’d end up needing a lawyer. But Dieu, he’d forgotten the way Priest made his body respond. Like an inferno was licking through his veins.

With auburn hair, stormy eyes, and a presence that Julien gravitated toward like a magnetic force, he didn’t think anything could prepare a person for the powerful energy Priest exuded. Not to mention that cool, judgmental stare of his.

But Julien had no one to blame for that judgment but himself. Maybe if they didn’t always meet at the end of one of his week-long benders, he could have the upper hand with this man for once. And wouldn’t that be délicieux, he thought, as he looked at the lawyer who’d dropped him home two weeks before, instead of at the police station like he’d originally threatened.

Priest was as put together now, at three in the morning, as he had been that afternoon in the alley. Suited up in a tailored navy number that framed his broad shoulders and emphasized the rich color of his hair, he looked sharp, controlled, and dangerous to Julien’s already unstable state of mind as he stood there sizing him up with an unreadable expression.

“I’m curious,” Priest finally said, as he clasped his hands behind his back and took a step closer to the cell where Julien had spent most of the night sobering up. “Did you not understand me the last time we spoke?”

Julien clenched his jaw and wondered if Priest realized how condescending he sounded when he spoke—or just how much it turned Julien on. “Non. I understood just fine.”

“Then what part of ‘I won’t be so lenient next time’ made you think that calling me to bail you out of here was a good idea?”

Julien was still trying to work that out himself, but thought it might have something to do with the fact that he was drawn to this man. There was something about Priest that made him feel alive, when all he’d felt for months now was dead inside.

When Julien didn’t respond, Priest cocked his head, studying him closely, the disapproval rolling off him in waves. “Are you that hard up for a date that this was the only way you could think to get one?”

Putain, the man was arrogant. But for reasons Julien couldn’t explain, that seemed to make him all the more appealing. “You’re the one who gave me your card the last time we met. Perhaps it’s you who are hard up for a date, monsieur. Giving your number out to—”

“Criminals?” Priest frowned. “No. That’s called smart business acumen, considering I’m a criminal attorney.”

Julien scoffed. “I’m hardly a criminal.”

“Really?” Priest said, and took his time examining the six-by-eight space Julien currently stood in. He then leaned forward and said in a lowered voice, “Your current situation tells a different kind of story.”

Despite his “current situation,” and the reason he’d gotten himself into it, Julien felt his lips curve, and he realized exactly why he was drawn to Priest. He possessed the one thing that Julien had been looking for—the ability to take his mind off the black hole his life had become. “Maybe it’s le destin.”

“And what does that mean? Destiny?” Priest straightened and brought his arm around to check the time. “I doubt destiny has anything to do with it. A more likely scenario is that I was your only option.”

“Even if that’s true,” Julien said as he wrapped his fingers around the bars, “you came anyway.”

“As I said before, it’s my job.”

“At three in the morning?”

“At any hour of the morning,” Priest said, and then looked down the hallway that was devoid of anything other than dreary off-white tiles and horribly bright fluorescent lighting. “I’m going to go and see if I can get you out, and then you and I are going to have a talk.”

Something about the way Priest said you and I made Julien’s pulse race, and as Priest went to walk away, Julien whispered, “J’ai vraiment hâte,” and the ever-so-serious lawyer stopped in his tracks and looked back.

This time when those eyes roamed over Julien, his breath caught. There was nothing cool about that stare now. There was heat, interest, and an intensity that made Julien’s fingers tighten around the bars before Priest cut the connection and walked away.

Julien watched him go until he disappeared around the end of the hall, and then he released his breath on a rush. Merde. He’d never been so attracted to someone in all his life, and as he stood there waiting for Priest to save him yet again, Julien knew he needed to stop what he was thinking.

There was no way in hell he deserved someone like that. Non, no way at all. That didn’t, however, stop him from counting down the minutes until Priest returned to him…

RELEASE BLITZ REVIEW: Get You Some by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Get You Some

Series: The Simple Man Series #3

Author: Lani Lynn Vale:

Genre: Romance Suspense

Release: June 7, 2018

Photographer: Furious

Cover Model: Chase Ketron

Cover Design: Cover Me Darling
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38730365-get-you-some

You want some?

She snarls those words at him with barely concealed hostility the moment he arrives at her window to ask for her license and registration.

After a few choice words, he lets her go with not one ticket, but three.

Next time she should check the attitude at the door and realize that he’s a cop, and just doing his job.

Come get some.

Fast forward a week, and he’s still unable to think about anything else but her and her bad attitude—oh, and those sexy lips, angry eyes, and her promise to make his life hell.

Knowing he should stay away, he takes a step back and tries not to think about anything that has to do with those long legs, and that mouth that could be used for much better things than spewing venom.

Then she makes a mistake.

At an interview, she rattles off a random number to use as a reference for a job that she desperately needs, and that number just happens to be Johnny’s.

She’ll regret being so rude, and one day she’ll think twice when she decides to throw attitude toward a man like him.

Vowing to make her life hell, he decides to have a little fun.

Never get enough.

What he doesn’t expect is to fall for her.

The more Johnny learns about June, the deeper he digs his hole. Soon, he doesn’t know which way is up, and he’s just fine with that.

Over time, he learns that not everyone bothers to dig past her prickly demeanor and get to the woman that lives deeper.

When one too many citizens of Hostel, Texas tries to back her against the wall, he’s had enough.

After all, you don’t mess with what’s his.

‘That’s because a man named Johnny, and a woman named June, will always find a way to be happy. Just ask the original Johnny and June.’

If someone would have made that remark to June Carter Common throughout the maelstrom that has been her life for the past 26 years, she would have never believed it, not because she didn’t want to find love and happiness, but because the people in her life, with the exception of her grandfather, have treated her abhorrently, making assumptions about her character based on the actions of her repulsive parents and judging her for a few misguided situations when she was a teenager.

I would even go as far as to say that her acceptance of the aforementioned truth continued to miss its mark due to her initial interactions with Johnny, who after he pulled her over and gifted her with three tickets became known as ‘Officer Douche.’ But little by little, both June and Johnny realize how much happiness and calmness they bring to one another’s life, so despite June’s aversion to touch, the town’s reprehensible treatment of June, and one nasty and deceitful ex, this Johnny and June duo work to ‘get them some’ in the most loving and heartwarming ways.

Both Johnny and June are extremely likable characters, and even though they’re both messed up in their own ways, they’re still incredibly strong people who weather their respective storms the best they know how, leaning on others when necessary but more than anything relying on themselves and enduring what must be endured while still growing as human beings.

The name of the city in which both Johnny and June live speaks to the hostility that has surrounded June her entire life. Hostel, Texas, may be a small town, but its residents know how to make someone feel like trash, even though there’s no part of June that would be described as such. I really don’t think I would have been able to handle all of the mistreatment June dealt with; I understand why she stayed because her grandfather means everything to her, but man, the townspeople are a bunch of vindictive assholes! She didn’t deserve their cruelty but there was also nothing she could do to stop it, which makes how Johnny handles June incredibly important and the fact that he sticks up for her and isn’t afraid to ‘tell it like it is’ when it comes to others’ snide comments proves that he is the perfect guy for June, even if it takes them a bit to figure that out and work through their respective issues.

I really enjoyed Johnny and June’s story; I loved watching these two imperfect people find perfection with one another, and while there is a bit of drama in the story line, outside of their individual issues, there’s never a doubt that they belong to one another and go above and beyond to prove that to each other and to the city of Hostel.

BLOG TOUR: REVIEW AND EXCERPT: ENVY by Dylan Allen

Envy, an all-new emotional and romantic standalone from Dylan Allen is now LIVE!

DAEnvyBookCover6x9_BW_325.jpg

If envy is a sin, then let me be damned.

Graham was born to be a star.

Once upon a time, that star shone only for me.

Now, I have to share him with the rest of the world.

For a while, I thought I could do it. Because, beneath the hypnotic smile, gorgeous body and God-given charm that made him famous, I still caught glimpses of my best friend.

Of the boy who called me sunshine and loved me.

I wore that love like a crown . . . until he placed it on another’s head.

Losing him was agony, distance felt like the only cure.

When tragedy reunites us after years apart, it only takes one touch to erase the past. Just like that, I’m back in his arms.

He promises this time will be different. But I’m afraid to believe him.

Because behind his star’s blinding brilliance is a darkness that doesn’t want to let him go.

I know a star that bright can’t belong to just one person, but my jealous heart doesn’t want to share him.

I want all of him . . . even if wanting what doesn’t belong to me leads me to ruin.

My Review

I have a confession to make…I’m so not a lover of excessive angst; in fact, a lot of the time I don’t understand its necessity to the plot line and I become disengaged because of it. But if the drama is well written and seemingly instrumental to the characters’ finding their way amidst the chaos, amidst the maelstrom that has become their lives then I can hang in there and reap the rewards of their struggles and revel in the fact that they endured…that they survived because I’m a huge believer in second chances, which makes me want to give characters the benefit of the doubt, even when they destroy their own lives and those closest to them without truly thinking about the repercussions OR feeling that it’s their only option regardless of the pain caused.

The reason I prefaced my review with the above insight is because Dylan Allen’s Envy caused my heart to hurt, tied my stomach in knots and had me going out of my mind with the trials Allen put her characters through…BUT, her poetic prose and her ability to create perfectly imperfect characters forced me to ride out the emotional torture and accept that the journey may be bumpy when it comes to Graham and Apollo’s journey, but the payoff was worth the trauma caused to my head and my heart.

Graham and Apollo’s initial interaction illustrates the uniqueness of these two characters as well as how effortless their bond begins, and because Allen provides readers with a firsthand account of the journey that Graham and Apollo take to become so much more than childhood friends, we can’t help but be their biggest supporters and wish to be their voice of reason when everything seems to go wrong and the decisions that are made force two people apart that should have never left one another’s side.

Sunshine, Graham’s nickname for Apollo, is the perfect moniker for, her not only because she brings light to his darkness, but also because that term perfectly describes her constant presence in his life, even when they’re apart. There’s such a purity to Apollo…a genuineness that is very rarely found in people. Her honesty, her truths and her ability to see beyond the fractured facades of those around her provide hope and love to someone like Graham who hasn’t had those things in his life for quite some time and even though he lost them at one point, the fight to get them back and the realization that they wouldn’t come without a dedicated effort proves to readers just how much Apollo means to Graham and why he’ll do anything to revel in her lightness once again.

Graham’s misguided actions sent me into a tailspin of frustration and anger…I get that he did the only thing he felt he could and I also understand how damaged his sense of self is/was due to his step father’s mistreatment, but I physically hurt for Apollo and I grieved for her and her dissolved relationship with Graham. They meant EVERYTHING to one another…they saved each other…they loved each other with abandon and then it all ended and those years apart were disastrous for these two lost souls because they didn’t have their other half…they didn’t have the person who spoke to their heart and to their soul without saying anything aloud. It was so effortless between Graham and Apollo, until it wasn’t, and it’s in those times and in those moments that I couldn’t help but want to shake Graham and wake him up to what his decisions caused and continued to cause until he finally resolved to make things right, to reclaim his Sunshine and the sole keeper of his heart.

Graham and Apollo’s story is one that illustrates the complications that life brings when sacrifices have to be made and hearts get broken in the process. Even though these two were apart and struggling, their memories of their time together and the love they felt/still feel never truly diminished and it’s that thought that allowed me to remain hopeful despite how heartbroken their disconnect made me feel.

Dylan Allen is a masterful storyteller – one whose stories demonstrate how passionate she is about her profession and how every part of who she is plays a part in the tales she crafts. I’m so glad that I was introduced to her books, and even though she mangles my heart, she always puts it back together and makes me realize how precious and necessary love is.

Excerpt

“I’ve been saving something for you,” he says softly. His breath is warm on my mouth, and I part my lips.

My pulse is thudding in my ears, but I hear myself ask, “You have?” right before his lips touch mine. It’s just a touch, reverent and tender and it says …

He lifts his lips off mine and breathes. “Can I do that again?”

“Oh, God, please do it again,” I say in between gasps of air.

This time, his lips linger, and when I kiss him back, he groans and drags his lips away. He presses his forehead to mine, his breathing ragged.

“I ache, Apollo. I’m fuckin’ dying.”

His voice is making me ache.

Inside and out.

From the roots of my hair to the tips of my toes. I wonder briefly if it’s possible that my legs are dissolving because, standing up suddenly feels impossible.

As if he can read my thoughts, he grasps my waist and holds me fast to him.

His hands. His touch. They are my body’s favorite. It’s been far too long since I’ve felt the addictive pulsing between my thighs that only Graham has ever inspired.

My nipples pucker so fast and tight that it stings.

“Graham, I need … I’m …” I can’t form a coherent sentence.

“Shhh, I know baby,” he whispers before his tongue sweeps my bottom lip. I press myself into him and whimper when I can’t get close enough. His powerful hands cup my ass, and he grinds himself into me.

I lift my leg and hook it around his waist in a desperate attempt to get closer.

More,” I moan.

“Everything,” he whispers. Then he lifts me off my feet and walks us until my back hits the wall.

He pins me there, both of his hands on either side of my head.

He holds me up with the deliciously warm and heavy weight of his sexy as fuck body and captures my mouth again. It’s messy, greedy, uncoordinated. All of our kisses are like this. Desperate attempts to make up for all of the ones that we should have already shared.

Graham’s lips pull away from mine, and they travel down my chin. I throw my head back, and Graham nips my neck before he sucks it so hard that it stings. And then he works his way down my chest, sucking, biting.

He presses his hand to the space between my breasts and with one swift yank, rips my shirt right down the middle.

“Fuck, I’ve been dreaming about these sweet nipples,” he growls before his mouth closes over one of my aching peaks. The moan that tumbles from my mouth is guttural and comes from an untouched place inside of me. I look down and gasp as waves of pleasure catapult through. The sight of his head at my breast. His eyes closed while he suckles, licks, bites, and kneads my breasts.

His hair skims my collarbones; his fresh, clean scent surrounds me. His mouth is devouring. I feel like I’m being consumed by the collective force of all of our longing and need.

Surely, it can’t be a good thing to feel so much all at once. I haven’t felt this way since …

It’s time for you to leave.

The words that I’d managed to forget now barrel through the thick haze of lust clouding my brain.

No, I can’t do this.

The master of my ruin is ravishing me, and I’m letting him.

Even as I shove at his shoulders to push him away, I writhe against him. “Babe?” He releases my nipple with a pop and looks up at me through those eyes that just make me want to forget everything and give in.

I look down at myself and stare at my still wet pulsing nipple. I want to put his mouth back. I also see the small, already dark bruises his mouth and teeth have left all over my shoulders and chest. The stinging on my neck tells me I’ll find the same thing when I look I the mirror.

“Apollo, what’s wrong?”

“Let me down.” I unhook my legs and shove at his shoulders.

He doesn’t move.

“Please,” I beg. I can’t meet his eyes.

He swears under his breath and steps away from the wall and lets me hop down. I clutch my torn tank top, mortified at how easy that was for him to walk in here and just have his way.

I step around him and run to the kitchen. I pick up one half of the stupid spatula and hold it in front of me.

“Oh, Apollo,” he sighs, his mouth turned down in the corner. “Tell me what you’re afraid of.”

“I’m not afraid. I just don’t like it.”

He throws his head back and laughs.

I see red.

“Why are you laughing? You’re ruining my life! Again!” I scream at him. I am wild with frustration and fear. Worst of all, I’m so turned on I want to shove my hand into my panties and finger my pussy until I come.

I want to do it right now. And, I want him to watch.

Oh my God.

What is wrong with me?

He’s turned me into a sex crazed exhibitionist who is ready to abandon every single one of my principles and let him fuck wherever he wants, however he wants.

All in less than four hours.

I don’t want to imagine the rubble I’ll be reduced to if I gave him more time.

My Review

Like every other one of Katy Evans’ alpha male sex gods, Ian Ford is ALL man. Mr. Hot Suit himself knows how to leave his women wanting for more, which is exactly where Sara Davies finds herself after she shared one hell of a wild night with Ian, but the possibility of seeing him again is dismal, especially when he never told her his name and the hotel registration didn’t reveal anything that could help her locate the man who made her feel beautiful and deliciously manipulated her body with the utmost ease.

Fate seems to want to give Ian and Sara a second chance, though, but that’s only if Ian can unclutter his mind and his heart, which is quite the tall order given the circumstances he’s dealing with, but the fact that he has another opportunity with Sara, he’s not about to pass it up, crazy baggage be damned!

Ian and Sara have the chemistry…they already know they’re more than compatible between the sheets…so if they can learn to trust one another, which isn’t easy for either one of them, there should be no reason they can’t explore what’s between them, even if they start under the guise of ‘keeping things casual.’

I have to say that it’s pretty much a universal fact that when romance heroes and heroines start off as a fling or a good time that it NEVER ends that way, which makes sense given the connection and sexual attraction that’s there. It’s obvious in Ian and Sara’s sparring matches as well as how easily fit into each other’s lives that it was never going to be something ‘casual,’ but I also get why Ian laid it out that way given his past experiences and the hole he’s still trying to dig himself out of and as long as Sara can handle it, who am I to judge!

Like all of Katy Evans’ stories, I enjoyed Ian and Sara’s book, and I knew it was just a matter of time until these two reconnected and stopped fighting the pull that was always there between them. The secondary characters are an integral part of Mogul, and it was great catching up with them and also finding out more information about future main characters. I’m definitely intrigued by Becka, and I can’t wait for her story!

Excerpt

My eyes lock on a third figure sitting with them. As I near, the man glances my way before quickly shifting his gaze. I continue to stare at him as I approach, and it doesn’t take long for his gaze to return to me. His large figure rises to full height as he stands to greet me, and I feel a bolt of electricity hit me in the chest as familiar eyes stare back at me.

He’s tall. Dark-haired. Gorgeous. With deep, thick-lashed eyes you want to sink into. And lips to suck on like they’re all that exists between you and heaven. I stop walking, stop breathing, because . . . he is here.

A moment passes and Bryn seems to notice my shock.

But shock doesn’t come close to it.

Because never in my whole life has my heart leapt so far and fast. It feels as if it’s ripping out of my chest. I can barely force my legs to move for fear of hearing my knees knock together. I struggle for air, but it feels like someone cut off my windpipe connecting my nose and lungs.

He wears a white dress shirt and black slacks, and his face is chiseled and brooding. The real shock lies in the intensity brewing in his dark eyes as they stay locked on mine. My heart speeds up as I hold his gaze. The city bustles around us. Making eye contact is not something I do often, living in a city of millions, but I can’t take my eyes off him.

The memory of having him inside me returns with a vengeance.

Bryn begins to introduce us. “Um. Ian, this is—”

“Sara. We’ve met,” Hot and Dirty Workaholic interrupts with a stiff smile.

Our eyes meet, and for a moment it feels like nothing else exists.

His name is Ian.

Fucking Ian, with his serious, handsome face and shiny, black hair. He’s as lit as I remember. Straight out of a Suits episode, and I am dying.
