My Review
I have to be honest…I still hold quite a bit of disdain for the Crew from the Upper East Side. But that’s only because K.A. Linde develops these characters in all their hated glory, shaping their personalities in a way that allows readers to form opinions of them quite quickly and turn against them for the way they act and treat those around them. And those feelings of contempt are difficult to let go of because the reason it’s never just one defining moment but a litany of atrocious behavior and holier than thou demeanor. The monikers for these Upper East Siders carry its own prejudices among those who exist around them, which means that it’s not just the readers who find this group reprehensible; it’s also those who interact with them.
But here’s where things, in my opinion, become interesting because as much as a reader may loathe a certain supporting character…when that person becomes the hero or the heroine of their own story, the author turns first impressions and initial perceptions of said characters on their head, proving that there is so much more to learn about these people and now the author gives readers the chance to do just that. And I find that K.A. Linde is an author who is able to characterize one-dimensional characters in a way that proves that they are so much more than just the sum of the parts readers have seen.
Court Kensington is indeed one of those Upper Easter Siders who needs to change his image, not only because of his bad boy swagger but also because of the way he’s being portrayed in the media because of his actions and decisions. So this means he needs all the help he can get and that assistance comes in the form of the amazing and professional publicist, Anna English, but she gets a bit more than she bargained for when she takes on this role because in redefining who Court is, she finds out just how attracted she is to him regardless of how messy things will get when she can’t help but cross that line.
The push and pull between Court and Anna…the banter and quips they exchange and the delicious sexual tension that’s always simmering adds to the angst of the story line and showcases the idea that they may act like they don’t like each other but when they’re both stripped bare, both literally and figuratively, they see just how right they can be.
Readers have been privy to the lying and hating season and now, we are more than ready the breaking season.
