Too bad he was headed back to England soon, so nothing could happen between us—for so many reasons.

I definitely couldn’t fall in love with him, especially since all we had was just one year.

My Review

One thing I’ve learned in the many Penelope Ward books that I’ve read is that the author makes her characters work for the outcome they want, and in doing so, they demonstrate their strength and their ability to persevere even with all of the obstacles put in their path.

With a title like Just One Year, I knew going in that it would serve as a definitive time frame, an end date of sorts for any kind of relationship/friendship between the hero and heroine, and as I progressed in Teagan Carroll and Caleb Yates’ story, I found that my inference was on point, but what it inevitably meant for these two was so much more than either me or them anticipated.

Even though Teagan and Caleb’s initial meeting doesn’t leave a good impression with either one of them, slowly but surely, they form a friendship, an undeniable connection and then something so much more that they both seem to want so desperately but are afraid to get any further involved due to the fact that Caleb is headed back to England.

For their ages and everything they’re dealing with,Teagan and Caleb are far more mature than most college students, and while I enjoyed their rational decision making, I did want their emotions to be more of a factor…I wanted more of the angst that I usually find in Ward’s romances. In some of Ward’s other stories, I truly didn’t know how the hero and heroine would work things out so that they would ultimately end up together at the end, but in Just One Year, it wasn’t so much IF but WHEN, as long as all of the details and options were examined and rationally considered.

Like Teagan, I definitely couldn’t resist this hot Brit – he’s charming, swoonworthy, and real, which means that his flaws make him who he is and these two together are about as perfectly imperfect as they can be and deserve to find a way to be together for more than 365 days.

My Review

I have to start by saying that I don’t usually read historical romances; it’s not that I don’t enjoy them, it’s just that I spend most of my reading time with Contemporary and New Adult romances, but after reading Calia Read’s Surviving Time series, part historical/part time travel romance, I was beyond ready to head back to Belgrave and the 1900s, 1919 to be exact, and I couldn’t wait to be reunited with Etienne and Serene and witness everything unfold between ‘Charleston’s number one womanizer’ and a heck of an ‘untamed debutante.’

Charleston high society is quite difficult to find one’s way in, especially someone like Rainey Pleasonton – a southern belle with quite the stubborn and independent mindset. At face value, Rainey wouldn’t be considered a southern gentleman’s first choice because she’s not afraid to say what she thinks and she makes it more than clear how she feels, and in this time period, society, and lifestyle, women were supposed to be more seen than heard, which is not a description anyone could use to describe Rainey.

And all of those qualities that make her a bit of an outcast are exactly what I loved about her from the start. She’s highly intelligent and has one wicked sense of humor along with the ability to shoot a bow with precision. And while her feistiness does get her into a bit of trouble, specifically with the bane of her existed as well as the executor of her funds, thanks to the instructions in her brother’s will, her personality is also what seems to pull said man, Livingston, out of the dark abyss that threatens to consume him.

The Livingston Lecroix who returns to Charleston from the Great War is not the one who left with his best friend. Because not only does Livingston return without Levi, but he also comes back without is easy going, carefree personality. Now, he spends his time fighting nightmares and drinking excessively as he combats the demons that threaten to completely destroy him.

Read does a great job of illustrating just how tortured Livingston is due to the war, and while his crass behavior, wicked words, and broody personality are a bit over the top, at times, the way he evolves throughout the story and fights to be the man Rainey both wants and needs will have readers rooting for these two to figure things out and give into the clear attraction that’s simmering just beneath the surface.

Livingston and Rainey share a long history – one full of verbal sparring, impetuous exchanges, and dastardly deeds, which means that the fact that her brother put her sworn enemy, Livingston, in charge of her affairs does not set well with her at all, and what ensues, because of this rather precarious position, is a battle of wills, pithy barbs, and whole lot of sexual tension, even though these two don’t recognize it as such for quite some time.

King of the South is a slow burn historical romance, one that paints a clear picture of the time period and all it entails for those who live in high society as well as the losses felt and scars acquired due to the war. I love how essential Serene is in helping Rainey and Livingston admit their true feelings for one another, and she and Etienne are a huge part of their lives, which means readers familiar with the Surviving Time series will feel right at home.

Excerpt

The party runs smoothly. Patrick or Rocco remains close to my sister unless his two friends are around. Thank goodness my parents sent their apologies. They’ll be at the wedding.

It’s past nine when the crowd begins to thin. The caterer and the cleaning crew are bustling around, making sure things remain tidy.

The door of the kitchen swings open, I’m expecting to see Grams who was going to help Gramps go upstairs. Instead, it’s him.

My cells buzz with excitement, which I don’t quite understand. He’s not my type. I like clean shaven, laid back, trustworthy guys.

“Need any help?” he asks.

“Why would you ask? Is this some kind of outreach program? One kind act to make up for your daily shit?”

He lifts his eyebrows and studies me.

“What is it?” I ask. “You keep watching me.”

He smiles, extending his hand. “Let’s start again, Tucker Dean Decker.”

The contact of his skin against mine sends a fluttering sensation along my extremities and my stomach. My breath quickens. I have the need to run away from him.

Those eyes have turned warm, and for some reason, he prolongs the grip longer than he should. I feel the warmth of his skin. Suddenly, I’m too aware of his closeness. For a moment, I look at his big calloused hand, swallowing mine. I enjoy the electric pulses that his touch creates.

“Tuck, the jet is ready. We promised to meet Nana for brunch,” Ethan says.

“Is Rocco coming?”

Ethan steps inside, shaking his head. “Nope, and it’s for the best, Zeke isn’t going to take the new Patrick well. At least the fiancée is sweet.”

“You’re judging her without knowing her,” I declare.

“If you knew Rocco, you’d know why we’re cautious,” Ethan says. “I can’t apologize for watching over my friend. Aren’t you concerned that your sister is dating a rock star?”

A pit of hopelessness opens in my stomach, should I be concerned? “I…”

“He’s a good guy,” Tucker says. “Trust takes time, and I’m sure it’s both ways. We don’t expect you to welcome him with open arms.”

“I trust my sister,” I say.

“Maybe we don’t trust Rocco and that’s the root of it all,” he tells me and winks, leaving without letting me ask any questions.

My Review

Heading into Great and Precious Things by Rebecca Yarros, I knew that I needed to mentally and emotionally prepare myself, but even then, I wasn’t wholly prepared because the one component of Yarros’ writing that resonates from each of her books is the ability to pull out readers’ emotions, making them feel EVERYTHING that the characters endure and struggle with as they work to find their much deserved happiness.

There’s a lot to unravel when it comes to the reasons for Camden Daniel’s departure from and return to Alba, and as that information is provided, it becomes a tangled web of strained relationships, well-kept secrets, and a litany of betrayals that have to be sorted through and cleared up before anyone, especially Camden, can move forward and alleviate some of the burden left on his shoulders for so many years.

Camden definitely has an edge to him, almost like a protective exterior, due to how life has treated him and what he has had to endure due to how certain events played out and other people’s quick judgments.

It’s clear he wears the scars of misjudgment, harsh criticism, and blame like an albatross around his neck, but he’s grown into a man who works to redirect his anger in different ways than simply exploding and being forced to deal with the fallout. There is so much more to Camden than certain people believe and the fact that he proves himself to those who matter is essential for his ability to move on from everything that he was forced to face.

Willow Bradley is Camden’s perfect other half, but coming to that realization and making it happen takes time. But Willow’s not afraid to go against the grain, to choose herself over those who judge her for exactly that reason, and that’s what allows her to follow her heart and be true to herself despite how others view those choices.

The small town world that Yarros creates allows readers to get to know, not only the main characters, but the supporting cast as well, and this adds such a depth to the situation that Cam and Willow find themselves in as well as offers insight into how easily misperceptions and assumptions damage someone’s reputation and/or what they believe they’re capable of doing and achieving. The small community of Alba could be any small town in America, and the author showcases that fact by aptly demonstrating how prejudices and narrow minds lead to dramatics that could have been prevented from happy if people were willing to open their eyes and see the truth behind the lies or false perceptions.

Yarros doesn’t rush anything between Cam and Willow because it’s the slow burn of them acting on their feelings that allow readers to see just how well they complement one another and illustrate why bad timing or missed chances wouldn’t prevent them from going for it this time around, even with what they faced at almost every turn.

I so appreciate every aspect of Rebecca Yarros’ writing because she ALWAYS allows readers to understand who her characters are at her core, way beneath the hardened or damaged exterior. Readers see, firsthand, just how complex…how endearing…just how worthy the hero and heroine are, despite other people’s misjudgments…despite their own self-doubt and recriminations.

4.5 Poison Apples

I’m a hopeless romantic and adore all things chocolate, coffee and paleo. No, seriously, I need to have a caffeine IV put in. I’ve adored reading all my life, and writing naturally evolved from my love of late nights and promises of one more page.

I’m also a military wife of sixteen years. During my husband’s deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I was devouring a book a day, and during his third deployment, I finally wrote my own. With a somewhat ironic timing, I received my book deal for Full Measures during his fourth deployment, and published a month after he returned home. We’re currently preparing for his fifth deployment, so check out the blog for the latest!

On the homefront, we have six kids. Yes, you read that right—six. If I’m not writing or playing guitar, I’m usually tying hockey skates for our four boys, or sneaking in John Hughes marathons with my two daughters. We fostered and adopted our youngest daughter from the foster system and we’re passionate about helping others do the same through our non-profit, One October! We’re always busy navigating the winding road of our daughter’s recent autism diagnosis, getting our boys to hockey, prepping for a deployment, and generally trying to stay sane. We’re die-hard Mets fans, but our hearts call Colorado home.
