The small dining room table had a pile of mail. I’d had Dad’s mail forwarded to my house, so mostly it was just catalogs and junk. Once a month, Mrs. Cascio sent me everything that arrived, even though I’d told her it wasn’t necessary. I mindlessly fingered through the pile, not expecting to see anything worth keeping. But I stopped at an envelope addressed to me—well, not me, but Luca Ryan. That was a name I hadn’t heard in a long time. In second grade, my teacher, Mrs. Ryan, started a pen pal writing program with a small town in England. We weren’t allowed to use our real last names for safetyreasons, so the entire class used her last name—hence I was Luca Ryan. I checked out the return address for the sender’s name.

Wow, really? It couldn’t be.

I squinted at the postmark. It was from a PO box in California, not England, but I didn’t know any other Quinn other than Griffin. And the handwriting did look pretty familiar. But it had been close to eight years since we’d exchanged letters. Why would he write now? Curious, I ripped it open and scanned right to the bottom of the letter for the name. Sure enough, it was from Griffin. I started at the beginning. 

 

Dear Luca, 

 

Do you like scotch? I remember you said you didn’t like the taste of beer. But we never did get around to comparing our taste in hard liquor. Why is that, you might ask? Let me remind you—because you stopped answering my letters eight damn years ago. I wanted to let you know, I’m still pissed off about that. My mum used to say I hold grudges. But I prefer to think of it as I remember the facts. And the fact of the matter is, you suck. There, I’ve said it. I’ve been holding that shit in for a long time. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not obsessive or anything. I don’t sit in my house thinking about you all day long. In fact, there have been months that go by when thoughts of you don’t even enter my brain. But then some random thing will pop into my head out of the blue. Like I’ll see some kid in a pram eating black licorice, and I’ll think of you. Side note—I’ve tried it again as an adult, and I still think it tastes like the bottom of my shoe, so perhaps it’s that you just have no taste. You probably don’t even like scotch. Anyway, I’m sure this letter won’t find its way to you. Or if by some miracle it does, you won’t answer. But if you’re reading this, you should know two things. 

1. The Macallan 1926 is worth the extra cash. Goes down smooth. 

2. You SUCK.

My Review

Hope…

It may be a small one consonant word but its meaning carries significant weight, allowing those who keep it alive to continue to move forward with the knowledge that all is not lost, but then there are those who lose faith in what they once held on to because nothing has worked out as planned and the pain and heartache seem to over shadow any promises that were once made.

Frankie Leigh and Evan Bryant have been in each other’s lives since they were young, building a strong foundation of friendship, having one another’s back and creating, what they hoped, was a relationship that would last forever.

But fate can be just as fickle as everything else, turning one’s hopes and dreams into missed opportunities and forgotten aspirations, especially when it comes to the fear of abandonment, the fear of not being enough, the fear of too many imperfections, and the fear of being too much of a burden.

Both Frankie Leigh and Evan lost hope three years ago, so much so that Evan went against his word and left Frankie Leigh with nothing but a broken heart along with broken promises, forcing her to let go of any future that had him by her side.

Can hope be restored? Can it be held onto for years even when it seems to only bring pain?

That’s the question Frankie and Evan need to figure out as they work through all that’s taken place in the three years that he’s been gone as well as what he brings back with him when he returns to Gingham Lakes.

Boy did this Frankie and Evan’s journey put my emotions through the ringer. The way that A.L. Jackson crafts their story and develops their characters illustrate just how necessary they are to one another and why neither of them are truly to blame for what happened three years ago, even though Evan’s the one who left, ultimately breaking both of their hearts. But the thing is…while nothing can make up for him leaving Frankie and his family without any explanation, his reasons for leaving, his conception of himself, and the broken pieces of his soul are what drove him away but what brings him back are just as significant and offer him and Frankie a chance to, once again, believe in that hope that was washed away the day Evan left without looking back. 

“You were always my hope, Frankie Leigh. My faith.”

As much as I wanted to rage against Evan for his decisions and the pain he caused to his family and his best friend, the fact that Jackson allows readers to be privy to Evan’s inner turmoil, his fears, and his sense of self helps us to understand his dilemma, but now that he’s back, it’s also time for him to prove to his ‘unicorn girl’ that he never meant to ‘steal’ her ‘sparkle.’ And, I honestly believe that’s the absolute truth.

While I do understand that Evan had his reasons for leaving everyone behind, it doesn’t negate the devastation and pain that he put Frankie through, which means that every single emotion she feels is warranted.

Evan and Frankie’s pain resonates from the pages – the heartbreak, the unanswered questions, the brokenness that seems to be all that Evan can see about himself…it’s all there on the pages of their story and with the added stressors that come into play, holding onto that hope maybe difficult but it’s absolutely necessary.

My Review

Like most of you, Hook by Gina L. Maxwell has been on my mind since finishing Pan and reading the bonus epilogue to get just a bit of insight into the tortured Hook and the man who wants to be the one to help save him. Unlike you, I’ve been privy to Hook and John’s journey from the start; I’ve been just a message away as Gina L. Maxwell painstakingly worked to be true to Hook and John’s character, to truly illustrate just how much Hook loathes himself, even though he tries to hide his pain, his darkness, his self-recriminations, so that he remains the silent and broody Captain who most fear and/or idolize.

Hook’s process of self-discovery, of allowing his sins and his nightmares to be unleashed, not for public consumption, but for one person who promises to bring light to his world is not a straightforward situation or a quick process. The physical and mental abuse that Hook suffered and the ways he’s tried to cope with his demons wasn’t a productive method, but it’s the only way he’s known, and that’s going to be a difficult habit to break, but if there was anyone who could do it, it was John Darling, the boy who worshipped Captain Hook and now the man who sees Hook as his Captain and no one else’s.

As much as John is the hero of this story, and believe me, he is one amazing guy who constantly battles for those who can’t do it themselves because he wants to give a voice and some light to the lost and lonely of London. The way that he methodically works his way into, not only Hook’s space, but his heart, illustrates that he is a man of conviction and he won’t stop when it’s something he truly believes in or someone he truly feels deserves the world – like he does when it comes to James.

Hook may not see himself as a hero, and let’s be honest, he definitely does commit quite a few unheroic acts, but he’s not the villain either; he’s not a monster who is irredeemable – that hellacious honor goes to the devil himself – Croc. But Hook, to me, is a scarred and tortured man who was once a boy whose life was never truly his own…who sacrificed his body and his soul so that no one else would have to suffer what he himself did and if that doesn’t speak to just how heroic he is – scars and all – I don’t know what does.

Even at the end of the story – an emotional and character-driven tale – Hook is still a work-in-progress and rightly so because the damage done to him is not something that will ever go away…but it is something he can learn to cope with…to deal with in a way that is not counterproductive and, thankfully, John will be there to bring Hook back into the light when the darkness gets a little bit too close for comfort.
Gina L. Maxwell wrote Hook and John’s story as Hook wanted and needed it to be – the pushy bastard – but it’s his book, so it makes sense that he would be the one to demand more from Gina than she thought possible, but with John’s guidance and light and Hook’s resolve to lay everything out for the readers to see, Gina has served as Hook’s mouthpiece and did amazing justice to his and John’s journey!!!
