COVER REVEAL: #FATE by Cambria Hebert

#FATE
Cambria Hebert
(GearShark, #6)
Publication date: November 4th 2019
Genres: M/M, Contemporary, Romance

What’s meant to be will always find a way.

Perfection isn’t an illusion.
I met it, held it in my hands.
But then it slipped right through.

Perfection isn’t an illusion.
It’s elusive, cleverly evasive, and, in many ways, a horrible tease.

I’m not a man to be toyed with.
Quiet, thoughtful, and even sometimes careful,
but never someone to taunt.
Even the most controlled men have a breaking point.
I just met mine.

Why mess with perfection?
You don’t.
Unless perfection messes with you.

Don’t fall in love with her.

Laughable, considering she isn’t exactly my type.

Wasn’t.

But she inadvertently shook up my life with her alluring, carefree spirit until I wanted more.

Until I made her mine.

She’s a habit I can’t quit. A fix I can’t get enough of.

But with one call, the piled-high secrets she’s kept start unraveling around her, and I have a feeling the demand that first day wasn’t so simple.

Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband, daughter, and fur babies. When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach . . . which roughly translates to being a homebody and dishing out movie quotes with her hubby. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and loves curling up in a fluffy blanket during a thunderstorm . . . or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: The Billionaire Book Club by Max Monroe

TBBC - BT Banner

It’s going to take a strategic attack from more than a couple brilliant minds to win her affection, but luckily, I know exactly where to find the right guys for the job…

The Billionaire Book Club.

The Billionaire Book Club, an all-new hilarious romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is available now!

TBBC Official Cover (new)

The Billionaire Book Club Questionnaire

#1: Who is your least favorite character in the book?

Me—Caplin Hawkins. I am an absolute idiot.

#2: Who is your favorite character?

Gorgeous, addictive, insanely challenging Ruby.

She’s smart, driven, self-confident, and so beautiful, she makes my chest ache.

#3 What is your biggest takeaway from the story?

Ruby Rockford and I are meant to be.

I just have to prove it to her.

For the entirety of my adult life, I’ve been content.

Content in my single lifestyle, content in my stressful-but-extremely-successful job as the main corporate counsel for almost every Fortune 500 company in North America, and content in my playful, spontaneous ways.

I had no idea it was possible for someone to change my mind.

The endless women and work are no longer enough, and just as Ruby Rockford told me—it’s about time I grow up.

It’s going to take a strategic attack from more than a couple brilliant minds to win her affection, but luckily, I know exactly where to find the right guys for the job…

The Billionaire Book Club.

It’s safe to say that I, Caplin Hawkins, the man most women would call The Ultimate Player, have finally met my match, and man oh man, has my end game changed.

I’m coming for you, Ruby.

And soon, you’ll be coming for me, too.

My Review

I haven’t anticipated a character’s story as much as I wanted and needed Caplin Hawkins’ story; in fact, I’d say it’s probably been since I impatiently waited for Thatch’s story, so the fact that I get both my main men in The Billionaire Book Club made me that much more ready to see what Max Monroe had in store for Cap and what woman would come into his life and bring him to his knees.

What I find interesting about Caplin’s contentedness is the fact that his job as a lawyer and the money in his bank account should allow him to live an extraordinary life – one that is so far above content that anyone would be jealous of the life he lives and the people and things he surrounds himself with…but he’s not, and a certain sassy woman shows him that he should want more…that he should open his horizons, so to speak, in ways that he never took the time to view or even felt like he wanted.

I do have to admit that Caplin is definitely an acquired taste, and I honestly think some readers may not like his attitude or his view on how his life should be lived, but, then again, some readers would say that about Thatch and I’ve been all about him since Max Monroe introduced readers to him. Now, I’m not saying that Cap is a complete douche, but there are times in the story that he frustrated the heck out of me and I wanted to slap a bit of sense into him and make him open his eyes in order to see the woman and the life staring back at him.

Ruby Rockford is quite the heroine, which is good because she’s going to need to hold her ground when it comes to the man who sees her as a challenge the minute she doesn’t fall for his charming ways and swoon over him. And even though she may be a bit of a hot mess at times, she is a strong and independent woman who refuses to bow down to a man who doesn’t deserve her until he truly understands that what they can have is so much more than the contentment he seems to demand.

The supporting cast of characters in Cap and Ruby’s story added to the shenanigans and the hilarity of the book because of their meddling ways as well as the fact that they weren’t afraid to tell it like it is when it comes to relationships and the missteps that can be taken. The Book Club/Poker Night scenes were some of my favorite because it allowed me an inside look at quite an interesting group of characters as well as the perspectives that come along with them. I truly couldn’t get enough of how these scenes were written and just how much Thatch reigns over his fellow members.

The Billionaire Book Club is an adorable romantic comedy that begins with quite an entertaining ‘meet cute’ for the hero and heroine and then proceeds to offer a plethora of scenes that had me laughing out loud, and, of course, any book that includes one of my favorite alpha males of all time – Thatch – is always going to be a great read.

4 Poison Apples

Excerpt

Cap

Errands officially run and work and Hell-ary’s margs with the girls out of my fucking head, I settle into poker night with the guys.

This, right here, is exactly what I needed.

Just the guys, smoking cigars, and playing poker.

Smoke swirls above the green felt of the table as Thatcher Kelly knocks the ashy end off his cigar, puts it back in his mouth, and deals a round of cards.

I catch them under my hand as he throws them, placing them one by one into the palm of my other hand and studying what luck has dealt me.

This hand gives me a queen, a king, and a trio of shitty other random cards, but in my actual life, it’s a whole lot of really good shit.

I’m a happy guy with a job he loves, friends he can count on, and more money than I’ll ever know what to do with.

I don’t have to worry about making the mortgage every month, I don’t have a sordid past with demons to conquer and wounds to heal, and I get more pussy than the SPCA.

There are occasionally stressful situations that come with being the top corporate lawyer for nearly every muckety-muck in the country, but I thrive off the pressure. It feeds my need for adrenaline and puts a nice layer of padding on an already swollen ego.

Which is, frankly, just how I like it.

Confidence keeps my life balanced. If I weren’t confident in my abilities at work, I’d be spending this time poring over files instead of enjoying a game of poker with my rarely available, pussy-whipped friends. But I know myself, I know my tenacity, I know my willingness to work an all-nighter, and most importantly, I know a little free time for pleasure does the business part of my mind a whole lot of good.

Kline Brooks, Thatcher Kelly, Wes Lancaster, Milo Ives, Trent Turner, and Harrison Hughes sit around the table in front of me, arranging their cards and smoking their cigars in comfortable silence. Quincy Black and Theo Cruz couldn’t make it tonight—something about a baby and a new hip nightclub respectively—but as I understand it, they have a standing invitation to poker night as well.

When the last card is dealt, Thatcher Kelly, a numbers genius, friend, fellow billionaire, and client of mine, places his cigar in an ashtray and shoves back in his chair to make his massive frame look even bigger. Frankly, I’m the only one in this group of guys who even comes close to his size, but I’m still not a giant like him. At six foot three and just over two hundred pounds, I’m leaner, but I can still pretty much guarantee I’m the stronger of the two of us.

“Welcome, motherfluffers…to the official Thatcher Kelly Poker Night, trademark.”

I roll my eyes at his theatrics, and trust me, I’m not the only one. Thatch has been trying to get a poker night going for our group for months, and now that it’s finally happening, I’m not even a little surprised he’s treating it like the first night of the Olympics. “What happens here, stays here, locked away from the women, the men, the children in your lives. This is a sacred table, a sacred ritual, a sacred game, and you will respect it.”

“Jesus,” Kline Brooks, another client of mine, CEO of the popular dating app TapNext, and Thatch’s best friend in the whole world, mutters.

Thatch carries on, unaffected. “I know you have other things in your lives, and I’ll allow it, but from here forward, this biweekly game is to become your priority.”

“No,” Wes Lancaster, owner of the New York Mavericks and another one of Thatch’s best friends, remarks. “I’ll be here when and if I have time. Fuck your sanctity. And, for the sake of everyone’s sanity, let’s keep your text reminders of poker night down to one in the future.”

“You’re disrespectful and disappointing, Whitney. You should be happy I allowed you, a woman, to participate.” Thatch smirks. “This is supposed to be boys only.”

Wes holds up his middle finger and takes a puff on his cigar, and I jump in as a colorful referee.

“Relax, guys. I think what Thatch is trying to say is that he misses you guys. You’re all so busy with your pussy—”

“Hey!”

“Yo!”

“What the fuck?”

“I’d tread lightly…”

The chorus of responses is loud and overwhelming, but I shush them with a hand and continue. “That we never really get to hang out anymore. This is a chance to bond like men. To talk about things you can’t talk about at home. To relax and play poker and not give a fuck about anything else.”

“I’m pretty fucking relaxed at home,” Milo interjects, and unfortunately, the rest of the band of misfits nods in agreement.

“Well, fuck you guys very much,” I say with a sour laugh. “Do it for me, then.”

“Technically, they’re doing it for me,” Thatch corrects. “And I’d keep your voice down. If Cassie hears you say some of this shit, I’m not gonna hold her back for you.”

“Your wife is here?” I question with a groan. “I thought this was about the guys. A sacred ritual locked away from the women and children in your lives—”

“It is, it is,” Thatch interrupts with a sigh. “But Cassie wouldn’t let me come into the city to have poker night at our Manhattan apartment and leave her with the kids at the New Jersey house, so she got a sitter, and the girls are having a meeting in their space, all the way on the other side of the apartment. Don’t worry. This is the guys’ space. They know that.”

Manhattan apartment. New Jersey house. Talk about first world problems.

Thatcher Kelly has more houses and apartments than he has members of his family.

Not that I can’t say the same for myself, but that’s minor details.

I roll my eyes at his pathetic words. Cassie Kelly wouldn’t follow a directive given by her husband if it literally saved her life. She wears the pants in their relationship, and Thatch usually doesn’t deny it. Instead, he just presents her tits as evidence.

They’re great tits, I’ll give him that, but I play with my fair share of great fucking tits, and I do it without having someone holding my balls hostage in exchange.

“So, we should expect her to pop in within the next ten minutes, then,” I remark, and even Kline, the most adult of the entire group, snickers behind a hand.

“She’s not gonna pop in, okay?” Thatch booms. “Fluffing hell. It’s like you don’t trust—”

“Yoo-hoo!” his wife interrupts appropriately, peeking her head around the door of the smoky room. “You guys hungry, or are you too busy punching one another in the dick?”

Thatch sighs and closes his eyes as I give him a hard glare. The rest of the group breaks out in smiles. Thatch places his cards on the table and turns to look over his shoulder so he can meet his wife’s startlingly blue eyes.

“Honey, I thought we talked about this. Poker night needs separation from ladies’ night. Like church and fluffing state.”

“Well, excuse me,” Cassie replies pseudoangrily, opening the door fully to step inside, “for fluffing checking on the status of your big, ogre stomach. From here on out, I’ll let you starve.”

I bite my lip and lower my cards to the table before letting my head drop back as Thatch jumps up so they can bicker in closer proximity.

“Christ, woman! Did you get your annual exam today, or are you just raging for no reason?”

“Your exams are gonna be reduced down to annual if you don’t cool your fluffing jets.”

“My jets are cool!” Thatch shouts, and the rest of us groan as Cassie lunges forward and punches him…right in the dick.

Ah hell.

As annoyed as I am at him, my crotch throbs sympathetically.

Cassie storms off, and Thatch, hunched over in a ball of agony, turns back to the table. “I’ll be right back.”

Still almost fetal, he waddles through the opening at a surprisingly brisk pace.

As the door closes behind him, the other guys start to chatter.

“The rest of our lives, guys. It will be this way for the rest of our lives,” Kline mutters, and Wes laughs.

“Not if we cut him out of the friendship circle.”

Kline smirks but simultaneously rolls his eyes. “Like that’s possible. Try to cut that fucker out, and he’ll end up shadowing you during your colonoscopy.”

“I’m not scheduled for a colonoscopy,” Wes refutes with a laugh.

Kline clucks. “Ah, but you will be. That’s how ridiculous his power is. You won’t even know how it happened until he’s snapping on latex gloves and suiting up.”

Harrison Hughes, a longtime employee of my father’s media company HawCom and friend of ours, laughs. He’s a little older than I am, but I’ve known him long enough that it doesn’t feel like there was a time when we weren’t friends. He also played rugby with Wes, Kline, and Thatch for a while, and he still throws his old, dilapidated ass into a game in the park every now and then. But, as the only single guy left other than Theo and me, I’m fairly certain he does it all just so he has a way to impress the ladies. “Wait. He’s the doctor now? What the fuck?”

Kline shrugs and chuckles. “Trust me. After this many years of friendship, I don’t put anything past that guy.”

Wes nods begrudgingly. “He’s surprisingly adept at making just about anything possible. That’s how Lexi ended up interning for fucking Hugo Clouse. She’s a teenager, and he’s basically the Wolf of fucking Wall Street, without the cocaine and hookers.”

I laugh. “Geez. Where’s the fun in that?”

They all ignore me.

“How’s she liking it?” Kline asks.

“All those numbers?” Wes questions with a laugh. “She loves it. Pretty sure she’s going to be managing my hedge fund by the time she’s twenty.” Kline smiles. “Win’s feeling the blues, though. Says her baby is growing up too fast.”

Milo smiles, even though I’m not sure he’s ever met Wes’s stepdaughter, and I don’t miss the pathetic fucking longing that goes with it. The bastard’s been a fucking goner since he got involved with his best friend Evan’s little sister. Now, he’s engaged to be married and apparently ready to add some mini-Milos into the mix.

Wait a minute…

“Oh God,” I groan at him, throwing my head back dramatically. “Don’t tell me Maybe is pregnant already.”

“Is she?” Trent asks, his inflection going noticeably upward at the end. Because, unlike me, he’s excited.

Love-sick fools. The whole lot of ’em.

“No,” Milo says with a little smile. “I’m just thinking about the day she will be.”

“Ugh,” I groan, miming sticking a finger down my throat. “First of all, you just got en-fucking-gaged, you bastard. And secondly, are we really talking about women and babies during poker night? And not, like, the good part of women, like how well their pretty mouths can wrap around our cocks. But how lovely they are?”

Trent laughs. “Yeah, Cap. If you stopped sleeping your way through the entire city, you might find out why.”

I scoff. “Fuck that. I’m not like you guys. I like a plethora of pussy, and I like it often. I’m not gonna tie myself to one chick for the sake of…what? Insanity?”

Trent shakes his head, while Milo smiles behind his drink, the fucker. They’re absolutely convinced I’ll be just like them one day, twiddling my dick while some high-class chick shops with my money.

But they don’t know me like they think they do. I like my life the way it is. Full of freedom and fucking and anything else I want to do.

My time is my own, and my body, a free agent.

I get to sample the best of the best, over and over if I want or just take a taste. I have my cake, and I eat it too, and fuck anyone who thinks just because it’s the way of the world, I need to change my ways.

In fact, after today, there’s a new pussy on the horizon, new fun to be had.

The pretty blonde with the hot body at the library who apparently likes to listen to audiobooks that are reminiscent of some of sixteen-year-old Cap’s favorite pornos.

Goddamn, she was something. A petite little bombshell whose choice in listening pleasure has me more than intrigued.

She didn’t give me her name, but it doesn’t matter. I am a man who thrives off a good challenge, and I already know my future romp with her will be a better time than any of these fuckers has ever had.

And hell, who doesn’t love a good naughty librarian fantasy?

Certainly not me.

That pretty little librarian doesn’t know it yet, but she’s the new chase.

My new mission.

And I won’t stop until I’ve tasted her and fucked these guys and their monogamy right out of my damn head.

Light My Fire (Sex. Rock. Mafia. #1) by Jessica Ruben

Cover by: Okay Creations

NA Contemporary Romance

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/46641148-light-my-fire

From Amazon bestselling author Jessica Ruben comes a hot new Romance…

He saved me from war.
Fed me when I was in too much pain to eat.
Smuggled me and my family into America when it became too dangerous to stay.
But, Nico didn’t flee with us.

While I began elementary school in the United States, he was building the greatest and toughest Mafia of the century.
The Mafia Shqiptare.

Nico is now King of all underground trades.
Sexy. Aggressive. Brilliant.

After years of nothing but silence, he’s back in my life,
Ready to do whatever it takes to bring me into his universe.
He isn’t leaving until he takes me with him.

Excerpt

“It’s your brother,” he says matter-of-factly. “But you probably knew that already.”

My stomach drops. Agron.

“It seems he’s been stealing from some of my associates.” His voice is completely devoid of any feeling. “He was dealing for them and keeping a little bit of product for himself. Sometimes, he used it; other times, he sold it. But after a while, people began to notice. He ran to the Shqipe for help.”

I want to blink, but I cannot move.

“I gave him the money to pay those debts. And now, I’m the one he owes. I figured I could use him to do some small-time work, get my money back that way.” He takes a sip of his wine, completely unfazed. “And then I hear, Agron wants a firm spot in my world. Gave one of my men a whole story that the Mafia Shqiptare is where he’s meant to be.

“As we both know, your brother has always been a loose cannon. Arguably, untrustworthy. I knew him when he was a kid, but I’m a firm believer that people don’t change.” He stops speaking, continuing to dig into his food.

Meanwhile, I’m worried mine is going to come back up. Hearing this about my brother isn’t a surprise, but it’s painful nonetheless.

I take another sip of my wine, hoping it will calm me or at least give the illusion I’m relaxed. Unfortunately, my hand trembles, and the glass shakes, giving me away. Nico notices, of course.

He clears his throat, putting his fork down. “There is something I need from you. And if you give me what I want, I’ll protect your brother from the other gangs by giving him a spot in the Shqipe. You do not have to agree to the arrangement. But if you do, there is no end to it until I decide it’s over.” He settles into a forward-lean position, big arms resting on the glass table and shirtsleeves pulled up to the center of his strong, corded forearms. Everything about him, from his body language to his words, spells dominance.

I open and then shut my mouth.

Nico looks me up and down, his gaze stormy and hot.

Is Nico going to ask me for sex? It wouldn’t be unheard of in these crazy circles. But I have a limit, and whoring myself out for the sake of my brother is a no-go. No. Impossible. Never.

“What I need is simple,” he continues casually, the look in his eyes extinguished. “There is a new family I’m aiming to do business with. They’re the type who like to work with men who are … settled down. I know how loyal you are to your word. We share a language and customs. You will act as my wife when I request it.”

“I have school.” I lick my lips. I can’t let go of my future. Not for Agron and not for anyone. I won’t!

“You can go back for your studies”—he nods—“finish your degree. But when I call, you must come.”

“This arrangement,” I start, pointing between himself and me, “it’s just for public purposes, r-right? Nothing private you’re expecting or illegal?” I can’t help my stutter. I want to stay strong in the face of all of this, but it’s getting difficult.

Nico looks over my shoulder, and I turn my head, finding no one behind me. When I refocus on him, he’s fuming. He knows what I’m insinuating.

He grits his teeth. “You aren’t my whore, Elira. And I’m not going to ask you to do my dirty work either.” His eyes are hard.

Is he offended?

“Take my proposal at face value.” He finishes his drink. His huge hand places the delicate crystal glass on the table. “There is no hidden agenda. You pretend to be my wife, come when I call you, and act as I expect, and in return, I will bring your brother into my fold, making sure that no outsider kills him. If you walk away, he’s on his own.”

“He wants to work for you. He will do a good job for you.” I swallow hard.

He cocks his head to the side, like he’s calling bullshit. “Agron’s best asset is that he is related to you.”

I shift, but the weight of my body feels like it’s doubled. “And if he’s within the Shqipe, the other groups won’t be able to touch him?”

“That’s right.”

Quiet descends upon our discussion, but my mind shrieks. The skeptical part of me is on questioning overdrive. “What kind of events would be required of me?”

He takes another bite of food. “We’d travel. Dinners. Things like that.”

I wait to hear more, things along the lines of dungeons and sex slave, but thankfully, it doesn’t come. “So, all I have to do is pretend we’re married?”

He nods. “Yes. Exactly.”

“But what about when this business thing you need me for is complete? What will happen to Agron then?”

His lips quirk up. “You’re very loyal, Elira.”

“He’s my brother.” What else can I say? I want and need Agron to stay safe and alive. This is clearly his best shot.

“We’ll cross that bridge when it comes. I would take this offer then if you are so keen on making sure he stays out of trouble.”

“You’ll swear to that?”

“My oath is my bond.”

I know he’s telling the truth. For people like us, honor is everything.

I wait for him to elaborate some more, but he doesn’t. Surprisingly, I feel my nose twitch. I was expecting him to mention something, anything, about before. About what we had. But he doesn’t. And I’m not about to either. I just want to get the hell out of here. I want to go back in time and tell myself not to have that damn cigarette. I wish I’d flagged Jack down when he was circled by those girls and claimed him for myself. Instead, I made one fucking choice, and now, here I am, in front of Nico, my life on crazy ground.

“It’s late.” Nico shifts in his chair. “You’ll stay tonight and think. Tomorrow morning, give me your answer. Regardless of what you choose, I’ll have my car bring you back to school.” He stands up, twisting the fancy gold watch around his wrist. “When you’re finished eating, Maria will bring you back to your room.”

“I want to leave tonight.” Some of my bravado from before is gone. Beneath the strong girl is plain me—a college kid from Tobeho. Here is the last place I want to stay.

“Until I have your answer, you aren’t allowed to take one step out of my sight.” He stands up to his full menacing height, and in this moment, he truly scares me. He doesn’t give a shit about what we had—that much is clear.

I force myself upright, refusing to cower.

Seemingly satisfied, he walks away.

“What an asshole,” I curse under my breath.

He snaps, “What did you call me?” His stubborn jaw gives him a stony expression.

My stomach drops to my knees.

“Something to remember.” He saunters back to where I sit. “I will not be seen with a woman who doesn’t look polished or well-raised. I know who you are and where you come from. Act like the woman you ought to be or forget the deal.” And with those final cutting words, he’s gone.

“Would you like something to drink, Hollis?”

“No, thank you.”

He looked completely uncomfortable standing in my kitchen, so of course, I needed to make it worse. I tilted my head. “Did you touch any?”

“What?”

“My panties. Did you touch any while you were in the bathroom?”

He tugged at the collar of his polo and looked down the hall. “Where did she go? We need to get back on the road.”

Oh my God!

I’d been kidding around. But…holy shit…he had! I covered my mouth and cracked up. “You did, didn’t you! You perv!”

Hollis walked down the hall. “Hailey…let’s get going.”

I couldn’t get the smile off my face. Something about the thought of Hollis touching my underwear amused the hell out of me. I wished Hailey wasn’t around so I could ask him if he’d smelled them, too. That thought actually made me snort.

Hollis came back to the kitchen. His face was stern. “We’ll see you on Monday.”

I walked them to the door. Hailey surprised me with a hug. “Your art stuff is awesome.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.”

I grinned at Hollis, who was impatiently holding the door open for his niece. “Your uncle thinks my stuff is awesome, too.”

Blurb

It started out like any normal day.

Then the fender bender happened.

The guy I collided with drove an expensive car and was drop-dead gorgeous. Too bad he was also a total jerk. We argued over whose fault it was and any other thing that came out of his condescending mouth.

Eventually, the police came and we went our separate ways. The insurance companies would have to figure things out. I had a job interview to get to anyway—one I was excited about.

Though that excitement changed to disappointment the moment the person interviewing me walked in. The guy from the accident.

Whoops!

Yeah, so I didn’t get the position.

The problem was, I really wanted it. No, I needed it. Anything to get me out of my current career and back into working with kids.

So, even though Hollis LaCroix was as intimidating as he was devastatingly handsome, I went back to see him and begged for a chance.

To my surprise, he gave me a shot taking care of his troubled niece.

At least my attraction to him wouldn’t be able to go anywhere. I wasn’t about to jeopardize my job or the strong bond Hailey and I formed.

But resisting the magnetic pull between us wasn’t that simple. (Then there was our little underwear game—don’t ask.)

We continued to flirt without crossing the line—until it finally happened.

This is the part of the story where we fall in love and live happily ever after, right?

Well, life has a way of throwing some major curveballs.

Ours was one I didn’t see coming.

Excerpt

“Thank you for going with us today,” I say after getting settled on the freeway, heading back home after having dinner together.

Cailin didn’t even make it this far before passing out.

I sneak a quick glance at Sarah and feel a pain in my chest when I meet her eyes. There’s something about her that makes my heart pound for seemingly no reason at all.

“I had so much fun. I’ve never been with just one child who’s old enough to walk on their own and actually be interested in the animals. I brought my niece a few years ago, but she was a little too young. It’s fun to be able to relax more and enjoy the animals without stressing over where everyone is or if they are taken care of.”

“Do you enjoy teaching?”

She lets out an uneasy breath, and I turn to see her expression. She’s staring out the window like she’s thinking. I touch her hand. I can feel that whatever she is thinking isn’t good. I felt it last time we had this conversation too. There’s something she’s not letting me in on.

When our fingers first meet, she flinches ever so slightly. When she doesn’t turn, I grip her harder, opening her palm and entangling my fingers with hers.

I feel the tension slowly leave her body as I run my thumb over hers.

Finally, she speaks, “It’s not like I don’t like teaching. I love it actually. It just wasn’t my first choice.”

I decide not to push her and ask what that first choice was. Obviously, it’s something she still struggles with, and who am I to bring up sore subjects from the past?

We drive in silence, hands intertwined. Like a Nightmare by Deadset Society comes on the radio, and I turn it up slightly, using the control on the steering wheel.

Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Sarah singing. “You know this song?”

“Yeah. I used to listen to My Darkest Days, so I followed them when they started the new band after Matt Walst left.”

I’m stunned to silence. I expect people to know band names and even song titles, but I don’t know many people who care enough to actually know the intricacies of band members and following those members when bands breaks up, only to create new ones.

I try to keep my eyes on the road as I also stare at her in shock.

She drops her shoulder, giving me a deadpan expression. “Why are you so surprised I know that?” My eyebrows rise, and a genuine, deep belly laugh escapes her sexy lips. “I’m not everything you see.”

A grin spreads across my face. “I can tell, and believe me, it makes me want to see more.”

Her cheeks flush, and I squeeze her hand tighter.

As we get off the freeway, Cailin wakes up, yawning as she asks, “Are we home yet?”

“Almost,” I say. “We have to take Sarah home first.”

“How come she can’t just stay with us? Have a sleepover?” Cailin whines as I hear Sarah choke on the water she was drinking.

I wink in her direction while responding. “Maybe another time, but not tonight.”

Sarah covers her mouth as she coughs harder.

When I pull into her complex, she says goodbye to Cailin as I open the door. “Stay right here, okay, sweetheart? I’m just going to make sure Sarah makes it up to her apartment.” I put on a song Cailin likes and close the door before rushing to Sarah’s side.

Sarah drops her water bottle when she sees me appear on the opposite side of the truck. After leaning down to pick it up, she fidgets with her hair, making sure it’s smooth and in place.

“You don’t have to walk me up. I’ll be fine,” she says, looking everywhere but at me.

I reach for her fingers, lacing them with mine. “I want to.”

Her eyes meet mine, and I nod my head toward her door.

“Thank you again for inviting me,” she says as we stroll in the direction of her place.

“We’ll have to plan something again soon.”

Her lips tug up to a smile. “I’d like that.”

We reach her door, and she takes out her keys, unlocking it but not pushing it open. Instead, she pauses and glances up at me, waiting for what I’m going to say.

I step closer, so our bodies are inches apart. “I’m not going to rush this.”

Her eyes widen, but she doesn’t say anything.

“I’ve been with girls I never wanted, but I’ve never been with anyone I actually wanted a future with, especially this bad. I don’t want to screw this up. I’m going to kiss you though.”

I run my fingers across the nape of her neck. Her pulse is thumping out of control. Mine feels the same way.

I slowly lean in. “Is that okay with you?”

Her lids close as she nods ever so slightly. Her scent is the first thing I notice as I take her in—cherries, vanilla, and so fucking mine.

Our mouths brush against each other as I hold her in place. Her lips parting slightly, I lick them, seeing if she’ll invite me in. When she does, I have to hold my breath and make myself not take more than she’s willing to give me right now as our first kiss.

I wasn’t kidding. I want to take this slow. I want to do this right.

It takes everything I have to pull back as I place my forehead to hers. “Slowly,” I whisper more to myself than anything else.

She nods, and I can’t help myself when I lean in again, entangling my tongue with hers and pushing her against the wall, wanting just a little more.

I pause our kiss, keeping her pressed to my body as I breathe her in one more time.

When I step back, everything I’m feeling reflects back at me, written all over her face. I take my thumb and wipe her bottom lip, needing one last touch from her.

“I’ll see you soon,” I say as I step back.

She waves goodbye as she picks up everything that she was holding that’s now on the floor. I try not to laugh that she dropped them, knowing, with a kiss like that, I might have done the same thing if something were in my hand.

My Review

I’ve always felt that the lyrics and melodies of songs speak to the musicians who create them and their listeners in all kinds of ways, and the power of music and words is definitely something explored in Lauren Runow’s newest release, Our Song. It’s made clear that music is not just a career that’s made the hero famous; it’s a way for him to express himself…to show the world who he is and what he thinks…and it’s a way for his fans to not only connect with him but also to absorb his words and apply them to their own lives.

Adam Jacobson may appear to be a typical out of control rock star, but there’s definitely more to him that the persona he created for his fans, and it’s the man and father he is beneath his rocker facade that will endear him to readers.

And I love how unexpected Adam’s character is…because while he and his band seem to live up to the outrageous life and antics that the media portrays them to have, Adam knows what truly matters in life and he does his best to put his daughter first, protecting her at all costs.

Sarah used to live her life and dream of her future, but now, since everything shattered around her, she’s merely existing, moving through each day without the same passion or thirst for life that she once had. And her pastor father is not a source of support for her; he’s one of recriminations and damnation, which is not what she needs in order to find happiness and peace again. But a sweet little girl changes things for Sarah and then once that little girl’s father comes into Sarah’s life, everything changes, giving her something that she hasn’t had in quite some time – hope.

Adam and Sarah’s respective pasts absolutely dictate their present, but they help one another to understand that they don’t have to be a constant force of pain and regret, and as they spend more time together, these two realize how things could be, if only they could let go and live in the moment.

The supporting cast of characters all add to the story line and to how readers view the main characters, but Cailin, for sure, steals the show, illustrating the innocence of childhood, the purity of love, and the reason adults can understand what joy is. She’s adorable and more grown up than she should be for somebody her age, but it’s her views on life and love that help both Adam and Sarah to believe again and to look forward to a potential future they can have together.

Our Song is a slow burn romance – one that allows the hero and heroine to truly get to know one another before they step into something bigger, and given who Adam is and what he does for a living, it was the right move to make. This was my first book by Lauren Runow and I’ll definitely be checking out more of her stories because the lessons she teaches through her storytelling and characters are easy to access and understand.

TEASER BLAST: ALL THE WAY by Kendall Ryan

ALL THE WAY

By Kendall Ryan

Release Day: September 24, 2019

About the Book

I know it’s time to move on from my rocky past and get back out there and start dating again.

It’s just that every time I think about it, I get all nervous and sweaty.

Good thing I have a secret weapon to help me—my best friend, professional hockey stud Owen Parrish.

He’s the king of hookups, and promises he’ll be my guide through the world of online dating. With his help, I know this won’t be as hard.

I’ve never been this hard in my entire life.

My friend Becca wants my help hooking her up with some douchey guy from a dating app.

I said I’d help her—but now I’m noticing all kinds of things I can’t ignore, like how pretty she is behind those baggy clothes and messy buns.

I want to be the one to help her, to show her the ropes in the bedroom, and it turns out, Becca’s game to let me take a more hands-on approach.

But what happens when she’s ready to take her newfound confidence and move on? I’ve never been boyfriend material, but for her, I want to try.

Your favorite hot jocks are back with an all new standalone novel. If you like sexy, confident men who know how to handle a stick (on and off the ice), and smart women who are strong enough to keep all those big egos in check, this series is for you!
