My Review

I have to admit…I went into Truly Yours with more than a little bit of trepidation. I knew with the issues of timing and conflicting emotions as well as the mental and physical scars that were fighting to control one or the other that a happily ever after for Mason and Sophie would be one hell of a battle, and as much as I would like to say that I always held out hope that these two would find the right time…would find a way past the pain and anguish…would fully heal in order to give themselves completely over to one another, there were times that I didn’t think it would happen…times where I felt like they were trying to get over an insurmountable amount of darkness, but that’s more a testament to Kennedy Fox allowing readers into the heads and hearts of their hero and heroine…because as much as Mason was Sophie’s light, she had to take the proper steps to get to the point where he could offer her himself and she could reciprocate.

It’s essential in an angsty read like Truly Yours that readers are allowed to gain a clear perspective from both main characters, which is exactly what Kennedy Fox gives us in the second part of Mason and Sophie’s duet. These two characters have had to endure so much, both individually, as friends, and as something more, but life and circumstances beyond their control have always left them a bit too far apart, forcing them to think and act and heal quickly, which just can’t happen in the situation that they find themselves in and the chaos that has them spiraling.

Healing may not be easy, especially given the circumstances that Sophie finds herself in, but it’s not impossible and the fact that she has a man like Mason to help her cope, to make sure she doesn’t go somewhere that she can’t recover from. His strength, his protective nature, his determination are aid in these two finding their way back to each other, despite the time spent apart and the immense storms they’ve had to weather. Mason is most definitely someone I want in my corner when I’m fighting to take my life back that was destroyed by bad choices and low self-esteem. But as much as it would seem that Mason could pull anyone through their hellacious experiences, Sophie had to do a large part of the healing, the coping, and the ‘reprogramming’ for lack of a better word that would allow her to come out of these devastating battles, strong enough and cleansed enough to fully give herself to the man who has always, always been hers.

Amidst the tragedy, the guilt, the pain, and the grief, light still exists, and while it remained overshadowed by darkness for quite some time, as soon as Sophie took back control, even if it was only a small amount at a time, it was still a step in the right direction and with Mason by her side, they walked that journey together, through the highs and lows, the overwhelming emotions, and the battle scars, and in the end, Sophie saved herself and her reward was a man who has only ever treated her as the amazing person she was always meant to be.

My Review

Anytime Lexi Blake takes readers back to Bliss, Colorado, in her Nights in Bliss, Colorado series, it’s a given that there is going to be a heavy dose of quirky characters, beyond steamy and erotic scenes, a salacious amount of sexual tension, and a litany of suspenseful, dramatic, and hilarious moments along with characters who need to deal with their pasts in order to have the futures that they want.

Since I’m a huge fan of this series, I’ve seen Logan Green as a supporting character in a litany of scenes in previous books, so the fact that he was finally having his story told had me anxious to head back to Bliss and witness Logan find a way to work through his past while still remaining in his hometown, and hopefully, find a way to be back where he belongs with his best friend by his side and one dynamic lady between them, sharing in everything they want to give her and giving unconditional love in return.

It’s clear, from the start, that Georgia Dawson affects both Logan and Seth Stark, which is perfect, considering that these two men grew up together, know everything about one another, and share a bond that won’t break regardless of the time passed or the fact that Logan’s been in a bad place for quite some time. I enjoyed the separate times that Georgia had with both men, but what I most wanted to see was just how much time it would take for Logan and Seth to get back their friendship and revel in the fact that they can make things right this time.

Because these characters have been a part of the series for quite awhile, readers can verify just how much they’ve grown up, how much they’ve changed from the people they were into better versions of themselves and despite the fact that there are still significant hurdles to jump over for these three, I never lost hope that they would find a way because not only did they deserve their happily ever afters, but the fact that they never stopped fighting to reach their dreams, even when it seemed hopeless is exactly why they would get everything they wanted and more.

It’s always difficult to say goodbye to characters who have been a part of your life since the start of the series and because the people of Bliss, Colorado, are one of a kind, it’s even a bit harder to leave them, but I know that anytime I want to visit this small town haven for people down on their luck, looking for a second chance, I only have to head back to Bliss through one of the stories and I’ll be reminded all over again, just how special the town and its inhabitants are.

It’s at that point I notice Billie climbing from the car. Although, if Mel hadn’t told me, I’d never have recognised the girl standing on my drive as Billie Wild.

She closes the car door and turns towards me.

Silence.

She stares down at her feet as she moves slowly along my driveway. When she reaches the front of the car, she looks up. The bluest of blue eyes meet mine, and she stops moving.

Deafening silence.

No birds singing.

No traffic sounds.

The silence is so loud it hurts my ears.

What. The. Actual. Fuck?

She takes a step towards me, and my hearing returns. The gravel crunches beneath her green biker boots, a pigeon coos, brakes screech, engines rev . . . a bomb could fucking drop, but nothing, not a single thing can divert my attention from Billie Wild as she moves towards me.

My Review

I knew headed into Carmen Jenner’s newest release that my emotions were going to be put through the ringer, but what I also knew was that I would be a better person for reading it and that I would meet two dynamic and amazing young adults who would teach me lessons that only people like Styx Hendricks and Alaska Stone could teach and that even though there truly only seemed to be one outcome for these two, their journey of friendship and love is not to be missed, regardless of the many tears that were shed.

Throughout the course of the story, Jenner illustrates cancer in all of its fucked up grandeur, holding nothing back when it comes to this debilitating disease or the struggles that Alaska must endure due to her diagnosis. Like her characters, Carmen Jenner shows so much strength and courage in her story telling. This story is not an easy read; it’s not for every reader due to the subject matter and the fact that we can be assured that at some point either one or both of the main characters will have to face their death and deal with it at a young age, making readers question the sense of it all, but there’s also a lesson in that…one that illustrates the fact that happily ever afters don’t look the same for everyone, especially when there are extenuating circumstances – ones that have more control over them than the characters would like.

I adored Styx gallows humor and his cynical view of most things, but when it came to Alaska, he’s all about doing whatever he can to get her to truly see him and give him a chance to be with her regardless of how short their time together could possibly be. I loved that there’s a bit of a backstory of to their relationship, even if it was a one-sided crush. The idea that Styx went for it and Stones opened herself up to him made for many steamy and swoon worthy moments.

As heavy as the subject matter is in Styx & Stones, Jenner lightens things up in different parts of the story, and she does this so that even though her readers may be overwhelmed with what the two main characters have to go through, there is light moments amidst the dark ones and that’s what you need to hold on to as the heartbreaking and trying moments begin to take over.

Styx and Alaska’s story is most definitely a love story, but it’s so much more than that…it’s about fighting even when you don’t feel like it any longer…it’s about living each moment the way it should be lived, fully and present, making all of them count, not holding anything back because you never one which one may be the last.

I applaud Carmen Jenner for telling Styx and Alaska’s story…for using their voices to show all the highs and lows involved in love and loss…in living and dying, and offering hope in the most hopeless of situations.

“Come here,” Styx says, giving my arm a weak tug.

“Where?”

“Come lie with me.”

I laugh and shake my head. “I can’t. I’ll squash your lines.”

“They’re plastic; they’ll bounce back.” His face turns serious, and the desperation in his eyes claws at my resolve. “Get your sweet ass up here, Stones. I wanna hold my girl.”

It takes a little maneuvering with his central line and heart-rate monitor, and my IV, but eventually I settle in against his side and he wraps his good arm around me, holding me as tightly as his weak body will allow.

I wish we had the power to make time wait for us.

I’d make it wait forever, right here. I’d use up all of the seconds it’s stolen from me, from us, and the lifetime it’s going to steal from our future. If I had the ability, I’d hit pause right here, and I’d never let him go.
