My Review

If there was a sports romance anonymous group, I would definitely have to attend because my addiction to this romance trope is over-the-top obsessive. And Sara Ney writes some amazing stories that feed my need for books that seamlessly blend athletes and romance together.

In Ney’s newest book, Jock Road, she gives readers Jackson Jennings, Jr and Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Edmonds’ story, and it’s full of her trademark snark, awkwardly hilarious moments, and the slow burn romance that sizzles and seduces once the hero and heroine give into what they feel for each other.

What’s not to love about Triple J? He’s genuine, dedicated, and driven. He’s singularly focused on making a go in the NFL, so his work ethic is impressive, and while some may argue that Jackson isn’t fully living because he refuses to deviate from his plan and the path he’s made to achieve his goal, the moment Charlie enters his life, he does deviate from his plan and works to figure out how his 3 mantras can be adjusted and broadened in order to fit a particularly sassy and intelligent female into his new game plan.

I absolutely adored Charlie, partly because she reminded me of myself but mostly because she refused to be anyone but herself and she told it like it is regardless of how other people might view her. She did frustrate me, though, when she prematurely judged Jackson and didn’t allow him the chance to show her who he truly is, but eventually, she does, so despite the fact that she had a difficult time moving past her first impression of him, she does realize that he’s actually not the kind of guy she believed he was. And that’s when things start to heat up between them.

Jackson and Charlie together were absolutely electric. The sexual tension was there between them from the very beginning, but Charlie refused to acknowledge it because she thought he was a player in every sense of the word, but the only one that fit him was football player. Because of her misconception, there was quite a bit of push and pull, amping up the angst and making me want to strangle them just a bit!

Jock Road’s hero and heroine are not your run of the mill romance characters; they’re quirky, awkward, temperamental, and sarcastic and sometimes those traits are so over the top that it will make readers roll their eyes, but their personalities are also what make Jackson and Charlie memorable, which, in turn, make for an entertaining and unique read.
