BLOG TOUR: When You Come Back To Me by Emma Scott

From USA Today bestselling author comes the second book in the Lost Boys series of interconnected standalones. Holden and River’s emotional and heart-wrenching journey to love, redemption, and their happy ever after.

When You Come Back To Me by Emma Scott is now live!

At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys…

Holden Parish survived his parents’ horrific attempts to make him “the perfect son.” After a year’s stint in a Swiss sanitarium to recover, he has vowed to never let anything–or anyone–trap him again. Brilliant but broken, he seeks refuge behind alcohol, meaningless sex, and uses his wicked sense of humor to keep people away. He only has to ride out one year in the coastal town of Santa Cruz with his aunt and uncle before he inherits his billions and can make his escape. Disappear.

Falling in love is not in the plans.

River Whitmore. Star quarterback of the Central High football team, Prom King, Mr. Popular, ladies’ man. He leads the perfect life…except it’s all a lie. His father has River’s future in the NFL all planned out, while River’s dream is to run the family business in the town that he loves. But his mother’s illness is tearing the family apart and River is becoming the glue that holds them together. How can he break his father’s heart when it’s already shattering?

River’s carefully-crafted façade explodes when he meets Holden Parish. A guy who dresses in coats and scarves year-round, drinks expensive vodka, and spends his free time breaking into houses for the fun of it. They’re complete opposites. River seeks a quiet life, away from the spotlight. Holden would rather have dental surgery than settle down.

Holden’s demons and River’s responsibilities threaten to keep them apart, while their undeniable attraction crashes them together again and again, growing into something deep and real no matter how they resist.

Until one terrible night changes everything.

My Review

I remember when I was editing The Girl in the Love Song, every scene that Holden was in, I wanted to equal parts hug him and shake him. I wanted to understand his allusiveness…his see-through stare…his outlandish attire…his ostentatious behavior. I also thought how fitting it was for him to be a bonafide member of the Lost Boys because I don’t think there’s a boy more lost than Holden Parish.

But as much as I knew his backstory was going to be tough to read, I didn’t anticipate just how much the people who were supposed to love him unconditionally let him down…how much they tried to make him into something that he was never going to be and shouldn’t have be…how truly scarred he was by other people’s actions that the only thing he could do to gain back any kind of control led him down a path that made him reckless and harsh…that made him do whatever it took to hide his scars, to maintain the perfectly put together facade, but in the long run, all it did was make his life harder, risking too much to quiet his demons and to dull the pain.

River Whitmore epitomizes the idea that selflessness sometimes comes with a cost. Because for someone who seems to have it all figured out and has the best of everything, he’s beyond lonely and out of sorts. The fact that his mother is dying and his father seems to be living his own hopes and dreams through his son make River feel like he can’t truly be himself…he can’t want what he truly wants because the repercussions are something he’s unwilling to pay, even though he doesn’t know for a fact the way things would play out, he won’t risk it, which only adds to the strain of not living for himself and instead keeping up the facade that doesn’t showcase what he truly wants and deserves for himself.

The push and pull between Holden and River has been there from their first interaction and the fact that Holden knows how to push people’s buttons so expertly and seems to revel in riling River up only adds to their angsty relationship. But I don’t think either of them realize how much of a lifeline they are for one another…how they count on their moments together to sustain them in ways they can’t quite acknowledge because if they did, what they share becomes something tangible, something they’d have to face, whether it’s just to themselves or to those around them. And caring or god forbid loving each other is not supposed to happen, not just because of how different they are but also because the future is not something they’re prepared for, at least when it comes to putting their hearts on the line and feeling something that could very well destroy them.

The idea of one’s worth is a theme strewn throughout the pages of Holden and River’s story and Emma Scott does a phenomenal job of allowing her readers to truly see just how worthy both Holden and River are and that their worthiness is not contingent on living a certain way, accomplishing certain goals, or ensuring that they make those they love proud of them. They simply deserve whatever and whoever they want because that is their right as human beings.

When You Come Back To Me is everything I adore about Emma Scott’s storytelling: the effortless way her words allow her readers to feel and understand every single one of her characters’ emotions; the dynamic and complicated story line that explicitly illustrates all that her characters have endured, allowing readers to understand why they do what they do, no matter if we agree with those decisions or not; the true beauty of the lessons and messages that are taught in the layers of her multifaceted stories and characters.

It’s clear that the driving force behind Scott’s writing is the need to be as open and honest as she can be, never sugarcoating life’s harshness or the hope that can still be found in the most devastating circumstances…because it’s in those moments where the light finds a way to shine through, offering hope to the hopeless and healing to those in the most pain.

5+ Poison Apples Review

Excerpt

On the stage, Miller spoke into the mic in a low, almost shy voice. “Hey, my name is Miller Stratton. I’m going to play a song by Coldplay. It’s called ‘Fix You.’”

I let my gaze slide to Holden, studying the contours of his profile—his chiseled jaw and cheekbones, strong nose, full lips. He swallowed, and I watched the movement of his Adam’s apple. Thoroughly masculine. Nothing feminine about it.

“Can I help you?” he whispered, eyes forward.

“It sucks not talking to you,” I said, as Miller strummed the first chords of the song. “I don’t know why. You’re arrogant as fuck.”

“Fair. You’re a grilled cheese sandwich.”

I snorted. “A what?”

“Shh,” Holden said. “Listen. This is our song.”

Our song. Nothing was ours. There was no us. But Miller sang that if you never try you’ll never know, and the words pierced me like arrows.

I took my hand out of my pocket and let it hang by my side again. Again, my skin brushed Holden’s, sending shards of heat dancing up my arm while Miller sang about lights that ignite your bones.

I looked at Holden and he looked at me.

Without letting myself think, I slipped my fingers around the side of his hand and slid my palm against his. He gasped slightly—a small intake of breath only I heard in the darkened auditorium. Then he let his hand settle into mine. Another heartbeat, and our fingers laced together.

“And I will try,” Miller sang, his rich voice hovering in the air in that silent auditorium.

“To fix you.”

A short silence fell before the crowd erupted in thunderous cheers, unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Miller’s version of the song was unlike anything I’d ever heard either, as if he were singing directly to me. To us.

Because it’s our song.

Under the cover of applause, I let go of Holden’s hand and tugged the cuff of his coat.

“Let’s go.”

I left without looking back but heard Holden’s footfalls following. Warning bells clanged in my head but were drowned in the thrashing beat of my heart that felt as it were trying to break free of its prison like it had at the pool. Only this time I was stone-cold sober. No excuses.

I pushed open the door next to the auditorium—the back area of the band room that was for instrument storage. Huge basses loomed in dimness, and drums of all sizes and styles lined the walls.

Holden followed me in and shut the door behind him. “Hello, friend.”

“I put in my college applications,” I said as he approached me in the darkness. “I’m going away to Texas or maybe Alabama this summer.”

“Establishing the rules, are you?” he drawled, though his voice was thick and tinged with nerves.

I swallowed hard. “Nothing’s changed. Nothing can change.”

“I told you,” Holden said, in front of me now. “I’ll never ask you for anything. I don’t have anything to give. Except this.”

I wanted to tell him that wasn’t true, that I was the one who had nothing to offer. I shouldn’t have led us here. I should walk out, but his goddamn voice, the scent of him, his presence was overwhelming. My hands itched to touch him, to grab him and…

Kiss him?

My first kiss with a guy. It seemed as if I’d been waiting a lifetime for it and yet the moment was rushing at me like a speeding train.

“Stop thinking, River,” Holden whispered. “We’re here. Right now.” He leaned in.

“What are you going to do?”

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Out of Love by Jewel E. Ann

I could love the monster or leave the man.

Out of Love by Jewel E. Ann is now live!

Conspiracies. Corruption. Serial killers. You name it–I’m fascinated by it. My mom always blamed my overly curious and highly suspicious mind on my dad. My incredibly overbearing dad. Mr. No One Is Good Enough For My Daughter has been terrifying my dates since I turned fifteen. College is my chance to be free from his control and date any guy I want. I’m absolutely certain he would hate Slade Wylder–almost as certain as I am that I do too. Since when have I shied away from trouble? Slade fascinates me. He lives in a house I’m certain is haunted. His dog is trained as well as any guard I’ve ever seen. Rumor on campus is that he deals drugs. It would explain a lot. But it doesn’t explain why he saves me from my darkest moment. It doesn’t explain why I can’t stop thinking about him. And the explanation I finally discover is far more dangerous than any rumor.

My Review

I’m fairly new to Jewel E. Ann’s stories, but the last two books that I’ve read by her has solidified her as a must-read author, and what it comes down to for me is how effortlessly she weaves a tale, ensuring that the development and depth of her characters are in tandem to the forward progress of the story line, which is sometimes difficult to do given the author’s intentions for her characters and how things play out compared to what the characters themselves dictate and with two unpredictable wild cards like Livy Knight and Slade Wylder, it probably could have gone either way, but I’m here to say that however Ann happened to corral her troops and give them the story they demanded, it’s brilliantly written and highly entertaining in the sense that there’s always something to sleuth out when it comes to the elusive college bad boy and the inquisitive and daring college girl.

Even without reading the previous three books in the Jack and Jill series, it’s clear that as much as Livy wants to get away from her domineering father and make her own path, she is more her father’s daughter than she realizes and is drawn to a guy who is every bit as mysterious and secretive as her father and what that means for Livy and for her connection to a man she can’t quite figure out but wants to give him everything that she is, but what if it means losing herself in the process.

Slade Wylder is allusive and standoffish, but it’s clear that he’s never met a girl like Livy and her persistence is meant to be a turnoff, at least in his mind, but it ends up being something that brings them toward each other rather than apart, but what that means for their respective pasts, for the danger that seems to be out there and imminent, in some ways, puts a different spin on things and how that will all play out is what makes this story so thought-provoking and had me riveted to my kindle until I reached the end.

As an English teacher, sometimes the twists and turns in stories aren’t difficult to figure out, but that by no means illustrates a writer’s inability to make a plot unpredictable because most romance readers don’t analyze scenes and actions the way I do…it’s the nature of the beast so to speak when it comes to my job as a teacher of rhetoric. So when a story line captivates me in a way that Out of Love did and I still didn’t see a few of the twists coming, which speaks to just how meticulous the author was to keep certain secrets hidden until right up to their reveals and that ingenuity and forethought makes for an exciting and entertaining read.

5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

After their kissy-huggy greeting ended, they walked toward the house with Jericho in tow. I waited for him to glance back at me. He saw me. There was no way he passed me a few seconds earlier on the street and didn’t see me. Yet, he made no attempt to acknowledge me.

Until …

My boy Jerry stopped abruptly and turned like he caught whiff of my scent. All the warm fuzzies filled my chest. A dog gave me more feels than any man had given me in a long time. Maybe ever.

Jericho liked me. Hell, maybe he loved me.

He protected me.

He smiled when he saw me—tongue out, tail in a low wag. I continued my way up the sidewalk, feigning surprise when he trotted toward me in spite of Slade barking his own command.

“Hey, Jerry.” I squatted down to give him double the love Miss Sophisticated gave him … and I had a treat in my pocket because part of me anticipated—hoped for—a chance encounter. “Oh, buddy … I love you too.” I closed my eyes and turned my face side to side while he showered me with kisses.

Slade cleared his throat.

I opened my eyes—noticing his friend must have gone inside. “Sorry.” I stood, sliding a treat into Jericho’s mouth along the way. “I know it’s hard for you to know he likes me more.” On a shrug, I bit my lips together to keep my shit-eating grin under control.

“Inside,” he said to Jericho while looking at me.

Jericho turned and headed to the back door.

“If you have a job to do … Jerry can hang with me tonight. I’m alone this evening.”

“Jericho. And he doesn’t need a babysitter.”

“Maybe I do.”

His brow tensed a fraction, contemplation settling into a slight frown for a few seconds, before he whistled and Jericho came running. “Send him home when your friends get back.”

Why was the only word that sat on the tip of my idle tongue? Why protect me?

“What are you going to do?” Okay, apparently “why” wasn’t the only word on the tip of my tongue after all. Six other words were in line first.

“Does it matter?”

Letting my gaze settle over his shoulder to the firehouse and images of Miss Sophisticated waiting for him, I lifted a single shoulder. “No. Just curious. Is she your girlfriend?”

“Does it matter?”

“I hate you.” I rolled my eyes. “Worst communication skills ever.”

“Good. Hate me. I prefer it.”

I recoiled. I didn’t really hate anyone. It wasn’t my personality to be hateful, vengeful, or hold grudges. Why did Slade Wylder want me to hate him? It was a joke. I hated his lack of sharing information.

“If you’re selling her some shit that will ruin her life, may I suggest you rethink that? Not cool, Wylder.”

“Noted.”

Tipping my chin up, I gave him several tiny nods. “Okay then. I’ll take Jerry to my house and spoil him. Maybe he comes back to you … maybe he doesn’t.”

Slade let his gaze slide down my body, a slow and easy trip. He didn’t do that when we met. Somewhere along the way, he decided it was okay. I wasn’t sure what reaction he desired from me.

Maybe nothing.

Maybe he did it out of pure selfish desire.

“I’m only allowing this because I love Jerry.”

Curious eyes met mine, slightly squinted.

I smirked. “Stripping me with those eyes of yours.”

Moments …

I collected moments in my mind, my heart, my soul, like Aubrey collected rare coins—my mom dying, my dad spending a few years thoroughly drunk. Mostly bad moments—permanent scars.

That moment I tucked into my memory forever as one of the first truly great moments.

Wylder …

The corners of his mouth quirked into pure sin. If Satan was hot as fuck, his name would have been Slade Wylder, and I would have been in a whole helluva lot of trouble.

Kind of.

I realize the wig and makeup don’t help my case, but that’s not the point.

The point is, Sebastian came at me first. He’s the one who started this war, but I’m the one who finished it. I’m not even sorry about it.

Fine, maybe I am little.

That’s the only explanation as to why I just agreed to play his fake girlfriend so he—we—can win a million dollars in the hottest reality show contest ever filmed on campus.

Don’t get it wrong though, Sebastian and I may look like we love each other, but everyone knows reality TV is nothing but scripted lies and staged kisses.

My Review

When two people, who are soul mates, go their separate ways for whatever reason, the love they have for each other doesn’t go away…it may lay dormant for awhile and seem as if it’s dissipated, but when their lives bring them back together, it becomes clear, despite the pain, mistrust, and heartbreak, that the love, the connection, the bond they shared simply needed a new chance, a fresh start, and that’s exactly what A.L. Jackson gives Richard Ramsey and Violet Marin in Falling Into You.

Richard’s past undoubtedly dictates his present and those demons that seem to be ever-present in his eyes keep him closed-up, never giving too much of himself or fully investing in anything but his music. And while readers received a bit of insight into Richard’s issues and what’s holding him back, I will say that I never would have thought that things went that far…that deep and guttural, but once everything unfolds and the lies turn to truths and the secrets turn to open answers, but that doesn’t mean it makes anything easier between he and Violet.

Violet Marin is new to Jackson’s Falling Stars series, which means that there is a lot to learn about her as well as what she shared with Richard and what she’s been doing in the time they’ve spent apart. I enjoyed getting to know everything about her and all that she’s been through, both with and without Richard. She truly is the perfect woman for him, and while things definitely haven’t been easy for her; her tenacity and strength see her through all the obstacles and hurdles she needed to get past in order to find her way back to the other part of her soul.

What I love most about Jackson’s storytelling is the care she takes in crafting dynamic characters who are realistically flawed and have to do the work to get the ending they want. And when it comes to this second-chance romance, the love between Richard and Violet was just waiting for them to find their way back because as much as they wanted to deny what was still between them and worked to stay away from each other, there was no stopping them falling into one another again.

RELEASE BLITZ: OUT OF LOVE by Jewel E.

RELEASE BLITZ: WHEN YOU COME BACK TO ME by Emma Scott

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: Wild Fire by Kristen Ashley

She didn’t like bikers, until she met him.

Wild Fire, the all-new consuming and must read 1,001 Dark Nights and CHAOS, Black Brothers novella from New York Times bestselling author Kristen Ashley and is available now!

“You know you can’t keep a good brother down.”

The Chaos Motorcycle Club has won its war. But not every brother rode into the sunset with his woman on the back of his bike.

Chaos returns with the story of Dutch Black, a man whose father was the moral compass of the Club, until he was murdered. And the man who raised Dutch protected the Club at all costs. That combination is the man Dutch is intent on becoming.

It’s also the man that Dutch is going to go all out to give to his woman.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

My Review

Knowing the two men who are responsible for the man Dutch Black became and is still striving to become made it easy for me to adore this alpha biker, because as much as he’s a man’s man who lives the Chaos life, loud and proud, there’s a softer side that comes through as well, and I feel like a lot of that has to do with what he endured as a young boy after the murder of his father and his desire, as an adult, to help others who have gone through or are going through the same kind of tragedy. So the fact that Dutch undertakes a special mission – one close to his heart – makes him one hell of a gentleman biker…if there is such a thing;)

And, then, when Georgie storms into his life, it’s clear that he’s met his match because there’s a fire inside her, which makes their initial interactions tenuous at best, but the fact that she challenges him but also truly sees him is why these two together are electric and their chemistry is off-the-charts and as soon as they join forces and realize their first impressions weren’t quite right, things between them ignite and they find exactly what they need and want in one another.

I am a Chaos girl through and through, so anytime I can return to my Kristen Ashley roots, I am there. And the fact that this is Dutch Black’s story – a character who readers met and got to know in Hound’s book – makes this new novella, in one of my all-time favorite KA worlds, a must read. And now I have to patiently wait for Dutch’s brother, Jagger, to have his story told as well.

Excerpt

“Invisible Man, this for you, or someone else?” Duke asked, taking Dutch’s attention, and Dutch realized he was so lost to his thoughts, he was working on autopilot and hadn’t noticed he’d approached the register and laid down his books. “Someone else,” Dutch answered. “You read it?” Duke asked. “Yeah,” Dutch told him. “Whole world should read it,” Duke muttered, jabbing a thick finger against the screen of the tablet that stood in for a till. “Yeah,” Dutch agreed. “Listen, you wouldn’t have any copies of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas that haven’t been shelved yet, would you?” Duke shook his head. “Not many givin’ up that book. We get one, you want me to call you?” He could go to Barnes and Noble, easy. With Tex as her barista, not to mention Indy and her crew all being the subject of those books that had been published, so folks came in all the time, Indy wasn’t hurting for customers, or cash. Still, Dutch bought his books exclusively from Fortnum’s. And he had a lot of books. He had no idea why Fortnum’s was his go-to. It wasn’t about buying local or any of that other millennial shit. Thinking on it, it was the fact he liked the vibe. It was the fact that walking in there was like walking into someone’s house. Like coming home. To family. Shaking off his thoughts, he agreed, “That’d be cool.” “You wanna stay for a cup o’ joe and a talk?” Duke asked, and Dutch hid his surprise. The man hadn’t approached. Not in word or deed. There were the looks he gave Dutch, the ones he exchanged with Tex. But he never said dick. “No, got shit to do this afternoon,” he lied. He had no shit to do that afternoon. Or at all. Ever. “Boy—” Duke started. “I’m not a boy,” Dutch bit. His temper wasn’t usually short, but these days, it could be. This was why Duke blinked. He then said, “Son—” “I’m not your son either,” Dutch returned. “Right then.” Duke’s voice was no longer a friendly rumble. It was tight. “First, my age can’t have escaped you, considerin’ all this gray hair and wrinkles, so you are a boy to me, and you will be until you’re sixty and I’m dead. And second, any man’s a man at all, a man that’s younger than him and obviously struggling is his son. A son he looks after.” Christ, was he not hiding it? “I’m not struggling,” he lied again. “Dutch—” “Brother, just ring me up so I can get on with my day,” Dutch demanded. Duke was silent a beat. He then finished ringing him up, and Dutch paid. “No bag,” he grunted. Duke slid the books over the counter toward Dutch. Dutch had turned, avoiding Tex’s eyes as he did, and started heading toward the door when Duke called, “You know that door is always open, but the one to my cabin in Evergreen is too, man.”
