RELEASE DAY LAUNCH: REVIEW, EXCERPT, AND GIVEAWAY: On His Knees by Laura Kaye

Decadent… Sensual… Forbidden…

Meet the Masters of Blasphemy…

About ON HIS KNEES (Blasphemy #5)

Getting on his knees makes him question everything…and want even more…

Another failed relationship has lawyer Jamie Fielding confronting the truth-he’ll never be satisfied with any woman until he admits what he needs…to submit and to be used-hard. When a friend invites him to the exclusive Blasphemy club, Jamie is stunned to find everything he ever wanted-in the fierce, ruthless hands of a man.

Psychiatrist Alex McGarry will play with anyone who craves his rough brand of domination, but what he really wants is to settle down. Which makes the submissive male he meets at his club a bad idea-the man might be hot as hell but he’s also new to everything Alex has to offer. Except that doesn’t keep them from coming together again and again, sating every one of their darkest desires.

Master Alex sets Jamie’s whole world on fire and makes him question everything-and that’s good. Because Alex won’t tolerate hiding what they have for long and he wants much more than just having Jamie on his knees…

 Review

I haven’t read many BDSM stories where the characters’ kink and sexual lifestyle focuses on sadism and/or masochism, so in a way, as Jamie Fielding was being introduced to the fetish community of Blasphemy, particularly those Masters who get off on their submissives’ pain and how much they can make ‘it hurt so good’ for the subs in their care,’ Master Alex’s teachings also opened my eyes to the sexual gratification that can be found in physical pain and degradation, and while I can say I am wholeheartedly not a sadist or a masochist, Alex and Jamie’s story not only educated me about an aspect of BDSM that I didn’t have much insight in, but it also illustrated how discovering what a person wants and needs as well as finding where he belongs is worth all of the past disconnects and broken relationships experienced.

Blasphemy is quite the sexual playground, and what I love most about Laura Kaye’s series is that she presents all different types of kink that occurs in the club and what the people involved in those varying sexual lifestyles find necessary and freeing about them. And while my knowledge of BDSM is based on fictional stories and characters, it’s clear that this world of non-vanilla sex allows people to feel liberated and at home in their own body because the various types of kink allow them the release and the connection that they can only find when they are with like-minded sexual beings.

The BDSM’s lifestyle carters to those who desire to move beyond vanilla sex and find their sexual niche, for lack of a better term, and in On His Knees, Jamie and Alex’s story teaches readers and the characters themselves that no one’s judgment or negative reactions should deter people from accepting who they are and what they need and based on how Jamie reacts to the sexual journey that Master Alex takes him on as well as the ideas Jamie discovers about himself just by being in an environment that fits every part of him, there is no denying how essential and life-changing Alex and Jamie’s connection is for both of them, and when it comes down to it, a person’s life is his own and the path he travels is up to his wants and his needs, NOONE ELSE should matter.

I can’t review On His Knees without mentioning how wrecked the last part of the book had me…I don’t want to spoil anything for readers but I don’t think I’ve ever cried as hard as I did when Jamie lays himself bare and kneels for his Master in a show of contrition. Jamie’s actions/words really did a number on my heart because Laura Kaye captured the emotional upheaval Jamie was experiencing and the steps he took to make things right in such a way that I could feel Jamie’s anguish and devastation and I wanted and needed him to be healed, in a way, that would never bring him that kind of pain again.

Master Alex heaved a breath and peered down at Jamie with a stern, narrowed gaze. “What am I going to do with you, my little masochist?”

“Anything you want, Sir.” The response had come right from the gut. Out of his mouth before he’d even debated whether Alex had meant the question rhetorically.

“Anything I want. Indeed.” He tilted his head. “Except you’re new to all of this. So I worry-”

“No, please,” Jamie blurted out, his hands going to Alex’s knees. “Don’t worry. Don’t be easy. I want to try everything. Do everything. And I want to do it with you.”

A storm erupted across Master Alex’s face and settled into those dark eyes, which raked downward to where Jamie still touched him. And then the next thing Jamie knew, Alex launched himself at him, grabbed him by the neck and shoulder, and took him down flat to his back on the floor.

With one hand tight around Jamie’s throat and his knees pinning his shoulders and upper body, Master Alex loomed over him, his expression mean. “Let me make clear how this works, little boy. I make the decisions. I set the scene. You telling me what to do is called topping from the bottom. And I won’t have it. Do it again and it’ll earn you a red ass you won’t be able to sit on for days.”

Jesus fucking Christ. Yes. Yes. Fucking yes.

That was probably not the reaction he was supposed to have. And a little voice in the back of his head whispered that there was something seriously wrong with him for feeling sheer exhilaration instead of fear-to say nothing of the way his pulse throbbed in his rock-hard cock. And Jamie certainly didn’t want to have made Alex feel disrespected.

But Jesus fucking yes.

He swallowed hard, his throat having to work against the tight grip of Master Alex’s hand. “I’m sorry, Sir.”

Master Alex barreled on. “You’re so goddamned sure you can handle this. You don’t even know. I’m going to use you and abuse you. I’m going to hurt you. And I’m going to get off on it.”

Jamie’s cock jerked at the decadent words, and Jesus how the dark promise in them reached out to some secret, hidden place inside him. “I don’t know…but I want to.”

“Why? Why are you here? What do you want out of this? Why the fuck do you want the pain I’m capable of causing?” That grip tightened, cutting off more of Jamie’s air.

He grimaced and choked. “My…my whole life. I can’t-I haven’t been able to…feel. And I…want to finally feel something, Sir. I need it. And I want to please…you,” he managed.

Master Alex leaned in, that handsome face so fucking harsh. “Oh, I’ll make you feel something, boy. I’ll light you up good.”

God, if Alex was capable of turning his mind and body on so strongly with just two sentences, Jamie almost couldn’t imagine what it might feel like for the man to actually make good on the promises. What if I can’t handle it?

But what if I can?

RELEASE BLITZ: MORE THAN LOVE YOU by Shayla Black

2018-SBPRBANNER-MTLY-RB

More Than Love You, an all-new sexy romance from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shayla Black is LIVE!

03 MoreThanLoveYou

I’m Noah Weston. For a decade, I’ve quarterbacked America’s most iconic football team and plowed my way through women. Now I’m transitioning from star player to retired jock-with a cloud of allegation hanging over my head. So I’m escaping to the private ocean-front paradise I bought for peace and quiet. What I get instead is stubborn, snarky, wild, lights-my-blood-on-fire Harlow Reed. Since she just left a relationship in a hugely viral way, she should be the last woman I’m seen with.

On second thought, we can help each other…

I need a steady, supportive “girlfriend” for the court of public opinion, not entanglements. Harlow is merely looking for nonstop sweaty sex and screaming orgasms that wring pleasure from her oh-so-luscious body. Three months-that’s how long it should take for us both to scratch this itch and leave our respective scandals behind. But the more I know this woman, the less I can picture my life without her. And when I’m forced to choose, I’ll realize I don’t merely want her in my bed or need her for a ruse. I more than love her enough to do whatever it takes to make her mine for good.

More Than Love You is a sexy and emotional standalone novel in the More Than Words Series.

Excerpt

My dad had been a biker. He was a nomad when it came to that kind of thing (or, really, any kind of thing). He accepted being tied down by his woman and his daughter only, not anything else. Not a job. Not a mortgage. Not a membership to a club. He hung with a lot of them, including Chaos (in fact, Hammer, sadly now deceased, but one of the founding members of Chaos, had been my father’s best friend).

But he’d never hung with Bounty.

“Don’t like the feel of them,” I’d heard him mutter years ago. “If you’re an outlaw, own the outlaw. If you’re not, own that. You can’t wanna be a Gypsy Joker. You either are or you aren’t. They wanna be. But they aren’t. That shit just ain’t right and it could get dangerous.”

He’d been right.

It got dangerous.

I should have known.

I should have followed my dad.

Mom and me had done it all our lives, job to job, house to house, city to city.

Why I stopped…

Damn.

I knew why I’d stopped.

I’d wanted Shy; Shy, who reminded me of Dad.

And when I couldn’t have him, I’d gone looking.

I’d wanted what my mom had.

I’d wanted that sweetness. That love.

That devotion.

I’d wanted the stability that just seeped down deep into your bones from all that no matter the job changing, the scenery changing, the amount of times you boxed up a house.

Stability had nothing to do with income and locale.

Stability was all in the heart.

About Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

A sexy new standalone from USA Today bestseller Sarina Bowen.

You’d think a billion dollars, a professional hockey team and a six-bedroom mansion on the Promenade would satisfy a guy. You’d be wrong.

For seven years Rebecca has brightened my office with her wit and her smile. She manages both my hockey team and my sanity. I don’t know when I started waking in the night, craving her. All I know is that one whiff of her perfume ruins my concentration. And her laugh makes me hard.

When Rebecca gets hurt, I step in to help. It’s what friends do. But what friends don’t do is rip off each others’ clothes for a single, wild night together.

Now she’s avoiding me. She says we’re too different, and it can never happen again. So why can’t we keep our hands off each other?

Review

Never Odd or Even…

This Palindrome seems a bit contradictory because doesn’t it have to be one or the other? There doesn’t really seem to be a middle ground in this idea, which should illustrate its impossibly but strange enough, this saying seems quite perfect for the hero and heroine of Sarina Bowen’s latest release, Brooklynaire.

I’m no stranger to Sarina Bowen’s writing, but I am new to her Brooklyn Bruisers series, and I know it might seem odd to jump into it three books in, but I didn’t feel like my lack of insight from the other books deterred my understanding or love of everything hockey, nerdy, and a bit odd. The fact that Book 4 is the Brooklyn Bruisers’ owner’s story may have made the transition easier on me, but it also put me in a conundrum because now I need to find the time to read all about the hockey players’ stories that came before this one!

I’m a huge fan of friends-to-lovers’ stories, especially when everyone around the hero and heroine recognize the attraction and the feelings that seem to be between them while they continue to be oblivious, partly so they can cope being around one another and partly because the main characters just don’t seem to understand how amazing they are despite their insecurities.

I can’t begin to explain just how much Nate Kattenberger is my kind of hero! I mean, come on, a hot brainiac with a magnetic personality and an awkward quirkiness that proves just how normal he is…what’s not to love??? Sarina Bowen easily captures the true personality of this math geek and numbers’ guy, and while Nate struggles with a personal life due to the nature of his work, his bank account, and his cheating ex, it’s clear that Nate has a lot more to offer a woman besides his ability to create palindromes and multi-task like a beast!

Rebecca Rowley is definitely a heroine I can relate to…she’s a girl who always finds a way regardless of the situation or the pressure and she’s strong in a quiet way that sometimes has people wondering just who she is and what she’s had to endure. I truly don’t know how she manages to help run the Brooklyn Bruisers while also keeping her family in check since her sister, her sister’s boyfriend, and her sister’s baby all live with Rebecca in her tiny two-bedroom apartment and let’s not forget that on top of the chaos at home, there’s even more craziness on the job because the team depends on her for everything, which throughout most of the story is a bit difficult due to a rather strange injury and the financial strain of medical bills and therapy appointments.

I have to admit that I really didn’t understand Rebecca’s hesitation when Nate finally acts on his feelings for her; she really puts him through the ringer, at times, with her hot/cold demeanor, and while I understood the whole ‘awkward work thing,’ Nate being Becca’s ‘dirty little secret’ really didn’t sit well with me. BUT… Bowen does provide readers with significant insight into Becca’s ‘running scared’ conflict, and once Nate and she are honest with each other and the expectations seem to be spelled out and a plan gets put into place, it eases the tension between them, for the most part, which made me a much happier fan of things working out between this adorably awkward pair.

Never Odd or Even…even though this palindrome leads me to believe that it is either one way or the other, Nate and Becca figure out a way that works for both of them and allows them to keep the work that they love and the person who has become EVERYTHING to them, and that’s all anyone could ask for!

I grab a towel off a waiting stack of them and toss it onto the edge. “You can sit and put your feet in.”

She’s wearing a short little knit dress that’s been making me crazy all evening, so it would be easy enough for her to strip off those stockings, sit on the towel, and drop both feet in.

And that’s what she does. She eases one stocking down over a smooth knee and tugs it off.

I don’t want to stand there staring like a middle-school boy. Okay, I do want to. But I don’t want to make her uncomfortable. So I go over to the sound system instead, and I set my phone on the speaker and cue up a really old playlist. One she’ll recognize.

When I turn around again, she’s seated on the towel, both legs hanging down into the churning water. “Ah. Wow.” She looks up at me, her eyes sparkling. “Nice place you got here.”

“Isn’t it?” I toe off my shoes and kick them to the side.

The first song comes on, and it’s a Macklemore tune that we used to play far too often in our first office. Rebecca laughs immediately. “You didn’t! I haven’t heard this playlist in forever. But I’ll bet I still know every transition. Lady Gaga is next.”

“She sure is.”

Rebecca kicks her feet, making a splash. “I have a little confession to make.”

“What’s that?” I loosen my tie and slide the knot out.

“Well…” She grins up at me. “I used to have a crush on you. Back in the early days.”

My hands freeze on the tie silk. “Get out of town. You did not.”

“No, I really did.” Her cheeks are pink. “That first year especially. But you were taken, and you were my boss. Those two things made it pretty easy to tamp down, when you’re a practical girl like me.”

I walk over and drop down beside her, my back to the water, though, because I’m still wearing trousers and socks. “So how does that work, exactly?”

“What?” She gives me a sidelong glance, but then looks away again and won’t meet my eyes.

“How do you stop wanting someone? I’m a practical person, but I don’t see how that makes it any easier. Nothing seems to mute the raging attraction I have for you.”

Her chin turns quickly toward me, and I seize the opportunity to kiss her. And it only takes one kiss—one slide of my lips over hers, and I’m on fire again.

We’re facing opposite directions, so it’s awkward as hell. But I don’t even care. I take greedy sip after greedy sip of her mouth, until she pulls back to stare at me. Her color is high and her eyes are bright and happy. “This is like Twister.”

“It’s better,” I correct. Lady Gaga comes on, just as Becca said she would. “Are we getting into this pool or what?”

Becca kicks a foot in the water. “I’m tempted. But I don’t have a bathing suit.”

“Oh, snap.”

She smiles and shakes her head. “Are you really getting in?”

“We don’t have to.” I’m never going to pressure her.

Her fingers trail across the surface of the bubbling water. “But this is an adventure, right?”

“Right.” I stand up and remove my socks. She’s watching me. And I can’t read her expression. “What?”

“Just wondering what else you’re going to take off.” She smiles.

“Come here.” The order rolls off my tongue.

But Rebecca doesn’t blink. She gets up and turns toward me, curiosity in her eyes.

“You tell me. What am I taking off?”

She puts two hands tentatively on my chest, and I make myself be patient. Everything I ever wanted is on the other side of this moment. I just need us to break through this awkwardness—the “will we or won’t we” tension.

Her fingers find the top button of my shirt. “I’m not getting in the water unless you are.”

That’s a compromise I can live with. I find my lower shirt buttons and work upwards, until we meet in the middle. She pushes the two halves of my shirt apart and runs a hand down my bare chest.

My inner caveman stands up and cheers.

Cover Design: Kari March Designs
Release Date: March 7, 2018
Blurb

They’re not quite enemies. Not really friends. More like frustrated balls of sexual tension and neither will give in.

Lance Gibson drives Mariah Malarkey absolutely crazy. He uses her office like a phone booth, takes cupcakes from the corner of her desk like she baked them just for him. She didn’t. Maybe she knew the history teacher happened to love peanut butter icing, but that was purely a coincidence. All sixteen times.

Mariah has a way of getting under Lance’s skin too. She calls him out on his crap, spoils him even if inadvertently, and seeing the librarian in skirts drives him wild. She won’t give in. It’s for the best, really, considering there’s no way he could lie to a woman like that and he’s not about to tell her the truth about himself. Not in a million years.

These two don’t hate each other. They don’t really like each other. But for this to be a friends-to-lovers story, they have to start somewhere, right?

Review

Going into any duet, a cliffhanger at the end of book one is almost a given, but the magnitude of such an ending is up to the discretion and perhaps the wickedness of the writer, and I have to tell you that Brooke Blaine leaves readers with one doozy of a twist at the end of Forget Me Not, book one in her Unforgettable Duet – one that will categorically change both heroes, leaving them wondering where they go from here and if their feelings for each other have the longevity that they need in order to make it through the road blocks that Ollie and Reid now face heading into Remember Me When.

The circumstances that put Ollie and Reid in each other’s path are quite unique, so once their causal interactions turn to more significant exchanges, readers get to see exactly what’s building between these two gorgeous and caring guys, and while they are both struggling to find their way in this world, it’s clear that whatever each of them wants to achieve will be accomplished because they have the work ethic and the right attitude to overcome any obstacles that make it difficult to move forward and given what happens at the end of Forget Me Not, Ollie and Reid are going to need to remember that anything is possible as long as an open mind and heart remain in place.

I don’t want to give any of the plot away because its uniqueness is something to be experienced on one’s own, but I will say that Ollie and Reid are very likable characters and the way Brooke Blaine allows them to get to know one another without impossible expectations, keeping everything, for the most part, light and easy, allows them to gradually get on the same page and recognize that the feelings that are building between them are unexpected but also quite strong.

I’m extremely interested to see where Brook Blaine takes Ollie and Reid’s story now that a few complications have made their relationship a bit more dramatic. But I do believe that whatever this duo must endure in order to come out on the other end together will be worth the heartache and emotional torment that Blaine will not only put these two heroes through but her readers as well.

Tragedy brought Ollie and Reid together and I hope to God that it can also help them to remember when and where everything started between them and how much they need one another in each other’s lives.

RELEASE BLITZ AND REVIEW: Hail Mary by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Hail Mary

Series: Hail Raisers #6

Author: Lani Lynn Vale

Genre: Romance Suspense

Release date: February 9, 2018

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36483471-hail-mary

Mary Persephone Hail

Mary—well-wished-for child.

Persephone—destruction.

Hail—well that speaks for itself.

Her name is painful to think about. Mary, his newfound daughter, isn’t a wished-for child.  Persephone, though?  Yeah, destruction is a fitting description. And Hail?  Yeah, that’s just the final f-you.

The moment that her mother drops her off on his doorstep, Dante’s hell becomes complete.

Or so he thinks.

What can make life worse after losing one’s wife and kids, you ask?  Here’s what: being given a baby that depends on him for her survival.  Finding out that the baby’s mother is dying of brain cancer, and has a husband that he never knew about. A husband that Dante knows in the marrow of his bones is trying to kill her just as surely as the cancer eating her brain.

Dante’s a bad person.  He’s done some not so nice things, and now he’s being punished for his misdeeds.  Karma is finally catching up to him.

This child that he’s been stuck with is of his flesh and bone. This child is his salvation. This child is the final nail in the coffin of his wife and daughters’ too short lives.

He doesn’t want this child.

But this child will save him whether he wants her to or not.

With the help of a friend—yes, a woman friend—Dante finds his way back to life.  But what he finds when he gets back isn’t the same life that he left behind.  Turns out, he has to start living a new one. One where he’s suddenly having feelings for a friend that helped him get through some tough times, and loving a daughter that won’t let him quit.

Lani Lynn Vale’s Hail brothers have the ability to bring readers to their knees, overwhelmed by all that these alpha males have endured and hopeful that each one of them will find the woman he can’t live without…the woman who will open him up to all that life offers and give him everything he needs to move forward instead of dwelling on the past.

Out of all of the Hail men, Dante Hail is the one who has been completely lost to the darkness ever since he lost his wife and girls due to a set of heartbreaking incidences. Through his brothers’ stories, readers have witnessed Dante’s downward spiral; he’s a ghost of the man he used to be and for years, he has shut out his family…shut out the world, resolving to simply exist with the festering wound of loss, afraid to start living again because any attempt to go forward seems like a betrayal to Lily, Jade, and Toni.

I wasn’t sure what to expect as I started Dante’s story. I knew that it would be emotional…I knew that it would be a harrowing task for Dante to pull himself away from his grief, anger, and heartbreak, and I was prepared for him to resist any attempts on his family’s part to help him move on. But what I wasn’t prepared for was how broken the heroine of his story would be…shattered in a different way that Dante but still carrying the same shadows behind her eyes and the overwhelming feelings of devastation and loss that are difficult to rally against.

Dante and Cobie’s story actually plays out for a few years – it begins with their individual struggles and then once they connect, it illustrates just how much they start to depend on one another and even though both of them find it difficult to start living again after everything that they’ve endured on their own, their connection is not something they can deny and while Dante pushes Cobie away a handful of times because he feels like he’s betraying his deceased wife, he grows to accept what is happening…the feelings that he’s developing for someone who is not Lily, and even though that realization damages him in significant ways, it also sets him free and helps him to reflect on his good memories with his family instead of dwelling on everything that he lost.

It wouldn’t be a Lani Lynn Vale story without elements of suspense and drama, so as Dante and Cobie work through their personal issues and pull themselves out of the hellish existence they’ve been living, they also must deal with a mutual enemy – one that has caused more damage than either of them could have ever imagined and as this person wreaks havoc behind the scenes, when the story’s climax is reached, it’s way more life altering than they or readers would have thought possible.

The character who stole my heart was Dante’s daughter Mary. She absolutely saves him from himself…from the pain…from the grief because she is a ray of blinding sunshine in his darkness. She may be a child with down syndrome, but she’s more so a little girl who loves life and who radiates adoration for her father and for all those in her life who understand just how special she is.

Lani Lynn Vale continues to write intriguing story lines with complex characters who readers watch transform, in both positive and negative ways, as their stories are told. And all I can say is be prepared to endure a wide range of emotions as Dante and Cobie’s story plays out on the pages of Hail Mary.

RELEASE TOUR: REVIEW, EXCERPT, AND GIVEAWAY: Beg by Eden Butler

Title: Beg

Series: God of Rock #2

Author: Eden Butler

Genre: Erotic Rockstar Romance

Release: February 6, 2018

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36246137-beg

I am a liar. My words were poison and everything I touched got filthy. Except Iris.

She was the best part of who I was. The only bright spark in my dull, gray world.

But denial made me stupid and a cruel insult destroyed everything I hoped to have with the girl of my dreams.

Now I will crawl on my knees and grovel because sometimes, even rock Gods have to beg.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Dash may be a God of Rock, but at the beginning of Beg; in fact, throughout much of the second part of his and Iris’ journey, he finds himself on his knees begging Iris for a second chance, attempting to make amends for his rash decisions and actions, but as easy it was for his words and deeds to unravel any and all progress he’s made with Iris, it will be twice as difficult to get back the woman he loves and the man he was before his rockstar lifestyle destroyed everything in his life that mattered.

In Kneel, Eden Butler gave readers Iris’ point of view, allowing them to understand exactly what when wrong between her and Jamie and what their shattered relationship did to her view on life and love. In Beg, it’s Dash/Jamie’s turn to show readers what happened to him…the cross that he bears due to the choices he’s made when he became a rockstar and the ones he continues to make without truly thinking of the consequences or what it will cost him.

Without Dash/Jamie’s perspective, it would be quite easy to place the blame squarely on his shoulders…don’t get me wrong he definitely deserves readers’ disapproval because it’s impossible to condone some of the things he’s done, but it is never solely one’s person fault, so Dash’s point of view gives readers a chance for him to explain his thoughts…explain his downward spiral, recognizing where everything went wrong and attempting to find his way back to what’s important…what’s vital for him to move past all that has happened…to get back to living and loving life beyond his music, beyond the rock god he’s become – that stardom that has been both a blessing and a curse.

Beg focuses more on Dash/Jamie’s journey of redemption; he needs to find the old version of himself…find the boy/man he lost when he embraced the rockstar facade and crazy experiences. He can’t begin to win back Iris’ heart until he deals with his own issues because she won’t go back to the man Dash has been for quite some time, so unless he proves to himself that he doesn’t need to give into his bad habits…that he doesn’t need to be in the limelight at all times…that his love of family and his feelings for Iris overshadow his love of music, Iris will never give him a second chance.

Dash/Jamie is stripped bare in Beg; he has so much to make up for, and it’s clear that beginning that process is overwhelming and, at times, it seems impossible. As a reader, it’s difficult to witness all of the drama and turmoil that he goes through, even if a lot of it is his own fault.

I definitely enjoyed the conclusion of Dash and Iris’ story, but I do have to admit that I wished that they would have worked through things a bit earlier in the book so that the aftermath of all that happened between them illustrated just how far they’ve come and just what that means for their future together. It makes sense why Dash is front and center in Beg, but I wanted and maybe even needed some of Iris’ perspective in order to get a clear view on just how far they’ve come by the time their story ends.

Regardless of the few issues I have with Beg, Eden Butler’s storytelling and character development, once again, showcases her skills at creating emotionally charged plot lines and dynamically flawed characters, and I can’t wait for her next story!

4 Poison Apples

She was starlight, bright and brilliant and out of my fucking reach. There was a hardness to those beautiful features now, a glint of something distant I’d never be able to take from her face.

Didn’t mean I wouldn’t try.

“You good, mami?”

The endearment bothered her, had Iris jerking a glare my way and I couldn’t decide if I loved or hated it.

“Don’t.” It was all she said, all that seemed able to move beyond the anger and bitterness that had tightened the muscles around her mouth. I did that. I’d caused all that rage, all that venom. I should take it for the medicine it was; gulp it down because I deserved it. But Iris was my past, the sweetest and best part of who I hoped like hell I could be again. More than that, she was my end game, my forever more. I’d do anything to have her back, anything at all to deserve her again.

I took two steps—slow, careful, like she was a landmine easily triggered by the wrong words, the wrong look from me. The closer I came, the straighter her back went and I knew not to push. She hated me and I understood why. I got that I’d done something unforgiveable.

“If saying sorry was enough, it’d be the first thing I’d utter every time I opened my mouth.”

She kept silent, staring straight ahead, watching the nurses shuffle around their reception area, thumbing through files, answering phones. I could only watch her, profile sharp, face tense, but none of that lessened that beautiful lines of her face or the sweet swell of precise features that gave her the look of a statue—something formed with love and care, something far too beautiful for this ugly world.

Blinking brought images straight to my mind of Iris and me, her laughter, her smile and how many times I’d put it there; how often it was my words, my music, my jokes that kept her face lit up and sweet. But that had been a long damn time ago and I hadn’t been the cause of anything remotely similar to those expressions.

“Sorry means nothing,” she started, focus still on the movement of activity around us. “Especially when it comes alone.”

“Alone?”

She nodded once and her voice was tight, the inflection shaking with what felt like anger to me. “Words are just words, sounds and syllables that fade to nothing. Actions. Deeds. Those are the things that matter.”

“Tell me what to do,” I said, moving closer than I should have, making Iris step away from me. “Please.”

Iris inhaled, wetting her lips with her tongue before she shot one sharp, furious glare at me. “Forget you know me and for God’s sake, Jamie, leave me the hell alone.”

The click of her boots sounded like slaps against my face as she moved down the hallway, further and further away, and I fought the urge to chase after her. Her hair was longer now, sliding against her back, grazing her waist as she moved. I wanted to tangle all that hair between my fingers. I wanted to know if that honeysuckle scent still hung in her hair.

“Sorry,” I told her, knowing she was too far away to hear me. “You can’t forget the only good you’ve ever known, mami.” I walked forward, scrubbing my face as I watched her. “Forgetting you is that last thing I’ll do.”

Eden Butler is an editor and writer of Mystery, Suspense and Contemporary Romance novels and the nine-times great-granddaughter of an honest-to-God English pirate. This could explain her affinity for rule breaking and rum.

When she’s not writing or wondering about her possibly Jack Sparrowesque ancestor, Eden patiently waits for her Hogwarts letter, edits, reads and spends way too much time watching rugby, Doctor Who and New Orleans Saints football. She is currently living under teenage rule alongside her husband in southeast Louisiana.
