The fourth book in Sawyer Bennett’s The Wicked Horse Vegas series shakes things up a bit, not only because neither of the main characters work in the sex club but also because the heroine takes on more of the alpha role this time around, struggling with finding balance in her life between her career as a mercenary and an unplanned pregnancy that makes her question everything about herself as a person, as a potential mother, and as one part of a romantic partnership.
But that doesn’t mean that the hero, Bodie Wright, doesn’t hold his own against Rachel Hart or as an elite member of The Jameson Group; in fact, once the duo figures out a game plan and decisions are made when it comes to both their personal and professional lives, Bodie fights for what he wants, not only when it comes to his child, but also when it comes to the stubborn badass woman who gives as good as she can take when it comes to their sexual proclivities and kinky play.
I think readers will either love Rachel or hate her based on how they feel about her decision when it comes to her baby. But, Sawyer Bennett does a great job of providing readers with Rachel’s back story as well as the reasons she chooses to live her life the way she does. Rachel is a multifaceted character who works in a male-dominated environment. She can’t show weakness…she can’t show her ‘feminine’ emotions. She always has to be on top of her game or someone will use her gender against her, and Rachel refuses to allow that to happen. Rachel loves her job and she’s damn good at it, so it makes sense that she’s struggling with the fact that she’s pregnant. I admire her candor when it comes to what she thinks can and cannot do, but even with her perspective firmly established, the fact that she becomes unsure of which path to take doesn’t make her any less of a badass; it just makes her human and it allows readers to somewhat understand why someone who is used to being in high risk, intense, and dangerous situations hasn’t felt strong enough or had enough courage to commit to someone in a personal capacity.
Bodie Wright is my kind of hero, and it’s not because he’s drop dead gorgeous or one hell of a lover; it’s because he understands the value of family and cherishes those he loves and who love him. There was never a question as to what the right decision was for him after Rachel told him she was pregnant. He stepped up in a huge way and even though he might not have agreed with Rachel’s decision, he supported her and he had her back in all aspects of their lives, in and outside of The Jameson Group.
Wicked Choice is not the typical storyline for a book in Bennett’s The Wicked Horse Vegas series, but she states that fact from the start, and I, for one, can’t wait for The Jameson Group spin off series that Rachel and Bodie’s story serves as a bridge to because I love a sexy suspense story, and after meeting some of the men in this mercenary team, I can’t wait to see what kind of danger and women Sawyer Bennett brings their way.
