REVIEW: Beautiful Criminal by M.N Forgy

As the son of the infamous boss of the DeAngelo family, I have merciless duties expected of me. The public labels me a monster, a man without a soul, and one hated by many.
They’re not wrong, and I’m not sorry for it.
When my father orders me to marry a longtime enemy’s daughter to settle a score between our families, she did what any smart woman with a beating heart would do.
She ran.
So, I found her.
She tries to negotiate for her freedom, but despite being inexplicably drawn to the deviant woman, I refuse her pitiful bribes with pleasure.
I still have a job to do, and I’ll make her tell me her family’s secrets, turning a treacherous situation into a game of hatred.
A code of silence will be broken.
Lines will be crossed.
I’ll promise her freedom to get the answers I need, but I’ll burn this city to the ground before I let her go.

My Review

Anytime a story line has a Romeo and Juliet – star-crossed lovers’ feel to it – I’m all in. So it was a no brainer for me to sign up for M.N. Forgy’s newest release, Beautiful Criminal. And because I’ve read quite a few of Forgy’s MC romances, I knew that she would create a dark and deadly world that would lead her hero and heroine down a treacherous and twisted path that would either bring light into the darkness or keep everything shadowed by hate and pain.

Leona Bravado would gladly give up her privileged lifestyle for a chance to choose her own life, and with that idea in mind, she does the one thing that perhaps might save her from an arranged marriage and a title she adamantly refuses to carry – she runs. Too bad Keiran DeAngelo refuses to allow her, her freedom but that doesn’t step Leona from holding her own and standing her ground against the man who she’s supposed to give every part of herself to. I loved Leona’s strength and her determination to do things on her own terms and even when she didn’t seem to have a choice, she always made her position known, never cowering to anyone, especially a DeAngelo.

It took me a bit to warm up to Keiran, but I think that was a deliberate move on M.N. Forgy’s part. The world in which he lives and will ultimately rule, once his father steps down as Boss, is not one where he can show weakness or anything but a blackened heart and soul. Doing, otherwise, would allow his family’s enemies an upper hand and he refuses to allow anyone, especially a Bravado, to tarnish his reputation as well as his position in this dark and deadly world.

I’m always intrigued with how the right woman can make a powerful man – one who is merciless and viewed as more beast than human – fall to his knees, whether it’s in the metaphorical sense or he actually bends at the knee. The sexual tension and electric chemistry that seemed to surround Leona and Kerian from the start has to implode at some point and what that means for these two, in a duplicitous and secretive world will keep readers guessing to the very end.

Beautiful Criminal is a perfect name for Keiran and Leona’s story because the implications of the title fit both of them extremely well, meaning that while they’re both gorgeous and make quite the stunning couple, it’s their different views on living amongst criminals and perhaps being ones themselves that serve as a point of contention between them and cannot be resolved until they each lay down their hand and find a way to coexist and even flourish as the two heads of the DeAngelo and Bravodo families.

REVIEW: Join The Club by Lani Lynn Vale

JOIN THE CLUB

By Lani Lynn Vale

Release Date: July 14

There are a few lessons one has to learn for themselves. Then there are the lessons that most people don’t have to learn because it’s just not done.

For instance, most people know instinctively that they shouldn’t crave the mother of their brother’s child.

Bourne Pena isn’t most men.

Bourne does everything he can to fight the attraction he feels for Delanie, but in the end, his refusal to go there almost ends up costing him his life.

***

Delanie Davidsdottir just wanted to forget. One night, she wanted to feel like a normal human being.

That one night changes her life and gives her a son that becomes her heart and soul. From that point forward, she does her level best to keep her head on straight and not make any more mistakes.

And falling for her child’s father’s twin brother—say that three times fast— would be a mistake. Not only is he Trouble with a capital T, he’s also a SWAT officer that puts his life on the line every single day.

She can’t take another loss like the one she suffered once before.

Then again, Delanie never encountered a man like Bourne Pena before, either.

My Review

Readers who have read the previous stories in Lani Lynn Vale’s SWAT Generation 2.0 are familiar with the complicated dynamics between Bourne Pena and Delanie Davidsdottir, but what they’re also privy to is just how complex these two feelings are for each other, even if they’ve had to remain hidden due to who their siblings are and the other circumstances of their lives.

I wasn’t quite sure how Vale was going to get these two ‘truly’ together amidst all the family drama and ill-feelings surrounding this entire situation. But, while I did feel like some of the angst wasn’t story-driven, the dynamics at play in these various relationships produce a ton of emotions, that don’t necessarily have to be stymied, but they do need to be handled in a way that doesn’t alienate anyone but also gives them what they want and need.

Once again, there’s a little scene stealer in this story and it’s Asa. She’s so cute and honest and she adds so much to the story line and helps reveal truths that the adults might not ever understand.

Overall, I enjoyed Bourne and Delanie’s story, especially hearing everything from their perspectives after what we’ve already learned some things about what happened among this group of people. I will say that I did struggle with the ending a bit, but I also understood the feasibility of what occurs given the reality we experience every day.  And, I’m excited to see what Lani Lynn Vale has in store for readers next.

“I’m jumping in the shower. Do I need to tie you up to make sure you’re still here when I get out?”

“No.” I threw myself onto the bed and stared up at the amoebic water stains on the ceiling.

“Just to be sure, I’ll take this with me, along with the keys.” He shook my wallet in his hand, shot me a wolfish grin and disappeared into the bathroom.

“How the…” I sat up and stared at my bags, completely dumbstruck at how he’d pilfered my wallet from me. He’d either taken it when I was asleep in the car, or he was magic. It was all a great mystery, as was everything else about the man.

If I thought he’d rendered me speechless with his little snatch and grab trick, it was nothing compared to my response when he exited the shower shirtless minutes later.

His dark brown waves clumped heavily with water that dripped in fat droplets down his taut chest, over the ridges of his sculpted six-pack, and soaked into the low-slung waistband of his joggers. I could almost feel his smooth skin against my tongue as I collected beads of water like a game of connect-the-dots.

I’d never been so thirsty in my entire life.

I was two seconds from sexually assaulting him when I noticed two patches of marred skin—one at the top of his left pectoral and the other slashing across his right side. Scars. Gnarly, painful-looking scars.

It was the reminder I needed that this man was an unknown. A predator in his own right. He claimed to be on my side, for now, but would that always be the case?

He would be the worst kind of enemy. Intelligent. Unpredictable. Deadly.

Within a year of self-publishing her first book, Jill Ramsower quit her job as an attorney and dedicated her days to churning out romantic adventures. She likes to think of her books as contemporary romance with a touch of fantasy—at its core, her writing is about the connection between two people. Sometimes that connection involves a little magic…

With Jill’s books, you can count on confident heroines, plenty of steamy tension, and deliciously assertive leading men. There are no guarantees in life, but with her books, you know everything will work out in the end. However, a perfect ending would not be nearly as satisfying without a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Jill loves to add plenty of adversity in her stories, creating unforgettably dynamic characters and sneaky plot twists you will never see coming.

Jill is a Texan, born and raised. She manages the hectic social calendars for her three active children and occasionally spends an evening with her dashing husband. Aside from being an author and a mom, she’s a travel junkie and loves to read when she is not lost in her own stories.

COVER AND SYNOPSIS REVEAL: Hate the Player by Max Monroe

HTP - CR banner

I can hate the player but still secretly love his addictive game.

I’m sure of it.

Hate the Player, an all-new enemies to lovers romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe is coming August 13th!

Hate the Player (official 9x6)

“Roses are red, violets are blue, stay away from Andrew Watson’s *ahem* because no other women ever do.”

That’s quite the way to start a conversation at a casual lunch, huh? Grilled chicken, French fries, and pelvic-fatigue, oh my!

And that’s not even the worst of it.

My friend Raquel didn’t pull any punches when she warned me about my brand-new costar and his notoriously player-esque ways. Apparently, my most important mission on my first role in a feature film is to stay immune to his charms.

Are you kidding me? Production costs on this movie are in the hundreds of thousands a day, and staying away from a panty-whispering, vajayjay-charmer is supposed to be at the top of my list? Pfft. Puh-lease.

It doesn’t matter that he’s annoyingly attractive, uber rich, crazy famous, and lusted after by ninety percent of the female population; Andrew Watson is trouble with a capital T—especially for a woman like me.

As a preventative measure, I’ve decided to go ahead and hate him.

Don’t worry, you guys, I’m completely in control. There’s absolutely no way I’m going to do something stupid like fall in love with him.

I can hate the player but still secretly love his addictive game.

I’m sure of it.

My Review

Every time I read a CD Reiss romance, regardless of the tropes, I know that I’m in for a unique story line and strong, independent characters who willingly fight for what they want, even if they do it in rather unorthodox ways. Reiss’ latest release, Lead Me Back, is a celebrity romance with a bad boy musician in need of an image makeover in order to move into films and a heroine who is ready to start a new life, in a new place on her own terms. And while she may be considered a ‘normal’ girl by Hollywood standards, there’s nothing ordinary about her, which is exactly why Justin falls for her.

Leaving New York and cutting all ties is what Kayla needed to do to put herself first and focus on her wants and needs, instead of everybody else’s, but things don’t quite go the way she expects due to a single encounter with a guy and an offer she can’t seem to refuse. I loved Kayla. She is a strong, determined, and real heroine – one who had lived a life that was more so living her instead of her living it. Doing a complete overhaul of one’s life is risky on a number of levels, but Kayla willingly takes those risks and while it leads her down a path that she might not have chosen, it’s one that shows her where she belongs.

As the story moves forward, it becomes clear that Justin is more than his image…more than his missteps and bad behavior and he can thank Kayla for bringing that out of him and for helping him prove to the naysayers, his critics, and movie executives that who he was in the past is not who he is now and he’s ready to do the work in order to be seen as a quality celebrity, which is a good thing since he had more than a little damage control to do, but it wasn’t just his career that he worked to change his ways – when he figured out what Kayla meant to him, he willingly did what he needed to to prove himself to her and to allow her to understand that he was worth the risk, worth putting her trust in and he wouldn’t let her down.

The dynamic relationship that Kayla and Justin form and then build-on is one filled with sparing words, electric chemistry, and amusing banter.

She stood her ground with Justin and didn’t let him get away with treating her poorly or ordering her around and that’s exactly what Justin needed.

She challenges him, doesn’t make a big deal of his fame, and gives as good as she gets, which made for one entertaining, steamy, and heartfelt read.

4.5 Poison Apples

Excerpt

Standing right there in bare feet, white tattoo-exposing tank, white basketball shorts with an orange stripe down the side, with his blond hair so precisely bed-headed it had to be on purpose, and a gold chain that was the icing on the cake of a look every fashion and celebrity magazine called “douchecore” was Justin Beckett.

From the band Sunset Boys. That Justin.

From the cover of GQ. Twice before age twenty-two.

I considered myself too much of an adult to listen to his music, but I wasn’t dead. The Sunset Boys breakup that spring had drowned Twitter in sobs and DMZ in clicks. Justin Beckett, with his ghostly pale-blue eyes, had been the front man who’d thrown it all away for a crazy night at the Roosevelt Hotel. There had been a party at the pool. He’d beaten a bandmate bloody, gotten caught with another bandmate’s wife and a bunch of drugs in a hotel bathroom. It was impossibly salacious. Like watching a car wreck where everyone was fine except the one guy who deserved to get hurt.

The clean-cut, silky-smooth boy in the band wasn’t so silky smooth anymore. Maybe it was the rough night at the Roosevelt. Maybe it was just adulthood, but he’d transformed into a fully muscled, square-jawed man. His size and presence dazed me.

“Weeze,” he said to his grandmother. “Who is this person?”

Louise gathered the smooth stems into a bouquet and put on her glasses.

“You’re such a big deal you don’t even know your own assistant?”

He shot his gaze to me.

“All right.” He snapped his fingers and pointed to the door. “Get the hell out.”

“Wait,” I snapped. I didn’t want to stay, but I wanted my money.

“I mean it. You got this far. Now get out.”

“You don’t have to be so rude,” Louise said, inspecting a stem.

He grabbed my upper arm and pulled me out.

“Don’t touch me!”

Ignoring me, he opened the door and pushed me outside, joining me in his bare feet and closing the door behind us.

“How did you find me?” he demanded, letting me go.

“I wasn’t looking for you!”

“You one of the ones who parked on Laurel Crest?” He pointed to some street over thataway that I was supposed to know. “Because you’re violating an order of protection.”

“No! You stupid jackass!” With my finger pointed and an insult hurled in a decisively unfannish tone, his face softened for a moment. I almost lost my resolve and smiled.

But he was still the guy who’d gripped my arm so hard it hurt, and that guy could suck it.

“You’re from what paper?” he asked.

“I just got a new phone, and your grandmother dialed the wrong number. She insisted it was you. And I was like, here’s a nice lady who’s not going to have a present for her boyfriend, so I went to get the flowers, which cost seventy-five dollars after I already got a hundred-and-sixty-two-dollar ticket for talking to her in the first place.”

“I like your accent,” he said. “New York?”

“Round it up to eighty.” I held out my hand. “The receipt’s on the kitchen counter.”

His mouth twisted, and he looked at me from shoes to hair. I wished I’d showered after the drive from Vegas.

About CD Reiss

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

“I never wanted it to be like this, Em. I know you don’t believe me, but it always meant more to me. You always meant more to me.” His voice is merely a whisper as he walks to the couch and collects his keys. He slows as he reaches the door, as if he somehow can’t bring himself to go. Then he turns to me, his gaze intimately connecting with my own for what feels like the last time. I close my lids, unable to see him walk away.

“I’m sorry for hurting you, Emilia. Believe me when I tell you it was never my intent.”

“I know,” I whisper back. “I know it wasn’t. But our sad reality is, that you did hurt me and now, now I need to move on, otherwise I’m going to continue to get hurt, but this time, I will have no one to blame but myself.”

His silence is my only reply.

The metal door handle squeals in protest as he turns it, the sound my only way to know he’s leaving. After the thump of the door vibrates through the floor, I finally open my eyes.

He’s gone, and I sink to the floor alone, my emotions expressed with four simple words: he’s broken my heart. But not so simple at all, is it?

When she isn’t writing or reading, she spends her time traveling and searching for the best record stores. Eventually, Scarlett hopes to begin a new adventure in Edinburgh.

RELEASE BLAST: STAR BRIGHT by Staci Hart

Stella Spencer has one enemy—her secrets.

The world’s obsession with the Bright Young Things is real. Every lavish party thrown by the most exclusive group in New York is a spectacle, stalked not only by the media, but by the police commissioner, who’s declared war. He’s out to ruin everyone’s good time, starting with uncovering the mysterious benefactor leading the group, thus answering the question on everyone’s lips.

Who is Cecelia Beaton?

And no one knows it’s Stella.

If society finds out the truth, her plans will unravel. And with one smoldering look from a stranger, her carefully ordered world catches fire.

Levi Hunt has one plan—get the story.

His future at Vagabond magazine depends on his ability to do the one thing no one can: infiltrate the Bright Young Things. If he can find out who Cecelia Beaton is, he’ll earn enough notoriety to permanently secure his career.

His dreams are at his fingertips, so long as he doesn’t blow his cover. But one night with the brightest, most brilliant young thing of all, and he knows he’ll have to make a choice.

The job he loves or the woman of his dreams.

Secrets and lies. Love and laughter. And two people with something to hide and everything to gain.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
