Time is defined as ‘the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole.’

So that means, conceptually, that a person’s existence is infinite because if the past, the present, and the future all exist together to form a complete cycle of time, that rotation does not have to only move forward…it can use actions, events, and circumstances of the past to make changes to the future…to adjust the path a life is taking and either divert it away from issues or force it to learn from those mistakes in order to be a more complete person further down the road.

The defining characteristics of time, the opposing views of fate versus free will, as well as the use of hypnotherapy as a means to examine one’s past in a manipulative manner are all concepts that took root in my head as I read Love on the Edge of Time by Julie A. Richman.

It’s truly difficult to put into words the epic journey that Julie A. Richman takes her characters as well as her readers on in Love on the Edge of Time because it entails a transcendence of time and a multitude of shared experiences that occur over a series of lifetimes.

Because the story is told in third person, readers learn who Jesse Winslow and Kylie Martin are, what they’ve endured, and the reasons for their destructive behavior from an outside source, someone who remains objective in presenting everything that occurs to them due to their decisions and actions. And while having an unbiased perspective helps illustrate the entirety of Jesse and Kylie’s concerns and issues, there were times that I would have loved to have gained insight from the characters themselves because in some ways the emotional turmoil is more genuine. But overall, the perspective Richman chose to deliver her story in worked well for the timeframe and conflicts that occurred.

Jesse and Kylie’s story is not a typical contemporary romance, partly because of the book’s non-linear timeline and partly due to the unique but manipulative catalyst of the hero and heroine’s continual heartbreak, namely the woman who took a hippocratic oath to always have her patients’ best interests in mind during treatment.

I don’t want to say anything else about the plot or characters in the story because to get the full experience of this whirlwind romance, it’s best to go in blind with your only expectation being that your reading journey will entail a gamut of emotions, both positive and negative, resulting in a book that will remain with you even after you’ve finished.

This time he didn’t text. He just called, waking her at two-fifteen a.m.

“Bare-ly dressed again tonight?”

Her laugh, filled with sleep was gruff. “Barely dressed every night.”

“What exactly do you have on?”

“A pink tank top and pink silk bikini.”

“Take them off,” he ordered.

“Excuse me,” there was an element of surprise in Kylie’s voice.

“You heard me. Take them off. Now.” Just hearing rustling on the other end of the line, he could feel his cock stiffen and it felt damn good after all this time. Baby, I’m back, he thought.

“We’re having phone sex? But, Jesse, we haven’t even kissed yet,” her protest was weak. And even she knew it.

“Yes, we’re having phone sex, and when I get back to New York, we’re going to do a lot more than kiss. You’ve friend-zoned me, Toots, and I’m busting out.”

Kylie was smiling on her end of the phone. Friend-zoned Jesse Fucking Winslow? Was he serious? “Nobody puts Jesse in a friend-zone,” she couldn’t help herself.

“Are they off?” He totally ignored her joke.

“Mmm-hmm.”

“What was that?” he asked, his voice gruff and serious.

“Yes, they’re off.”

“Okay, spread your legs, and with your phone, take a picture of your pussy for me.”

“Seriously?” She knew she was blushing in the dark.

“Take the picture, Kylie.”

“Okay, but if you sell this to the paparazzi, I will kill you.” There was a rustling sound, then, “Oh, my God, I can’t believe I’m doing this.”

He laughed.

“Okay, here it comes. I hope it’s photogenic. It would be really embarrassing to have a non-photogenic pussy.”

Pulling the phone from his ear to look, Kylie could hear his moan, exciting her even more.

“So photogenic, Toots, just like the rest of you. And I love the red landing strip. It’s so hot. Oh, man, I love this. Spread your legs wider and use one hand to spread your lips open for me and send me another.”

Following his directions, she did as he requested.

Cherish Hard is the perfect title for Ísa and Sailor’s story because they both deserve to be valued and seen as the absolute gifts that they are. They’re hard workers and they have clear objectives for their lives and are willing to put in the time to achieve their goals, both professionally and personally, especially after they realize that the chemistry and attraction between them is not something they can deny.

I love how Nalini Singh develops Sailor’s character, illustrating the good and honest man that he is as well as developing the alpha male he seems to be when it comes to claiming Ísa, even when she misjudges him and tries to run. He’s tenacious in his pursuit of Ísa because he sees the woman she is and he wants to have her light, her smile, her everything in his life forever. Sailor’s a phenomenal book boyfriend because there’s nothing fake about his actions or his words…and let me tell you, Sailor’s sweet and dirty talk would melt any woman’s panties! He’s a genuinely nice guy whose family and friends mean the world to him, and even though Sailor is an imperfect man, he does his best to lead a life that represents the type of man he wants people to view him as and, for the most part, he is successful.

Ísa is an intriguing heroine because she seems to represent the everyday woman – the one who all readers can relate to, at least in some way, because the things that she goes through and her feelings of insecurity are all identifiable situations/feelings of a modern woman. Her family is a bit of a hot mess, partly because both of her parents are self-serving and partly because the whole dynamics with her step parents and siblings always seems to be points of contention as well as the fact that Ísa’s mother has much different aspirations for her daughter than what Ísa wants for herself, and their issues aren’t easily solvable.

Cherish Hard is a low angst, feel good story that proves just how easy it is for the right person to ‘imprint’ or make an impression on someone else’s life, even if there were no words exchanged during their initial sightings. Sailor is the perfect guy for Ísa because his persistence and care are exactly what she needs to open herself up to the possibility of being an ‘us’ when everything she’s wanted in a man is standing right in front of her.

ÍSA WONDERED WHAT THE HELL she was doing.

Being a devil woman, she reminded herself. Having fun for a change. Not being a grandma at twenty-eight years of age.

Still, she couldn’t stop second-guessing herself as Sailor led her out of the house through a side entrance that opened out into a small, manicured garden. “I’ll have to take off my heels,” she whispered when she saw the pebbled path snaking through the garden.

“Want a piggyback ride?” A playful grin. “I promise not to molest your thighs.”

Goose bumps broke out over Ísa’s skin, her nipples tight. Reckless as she was feeling tonight, she might just have taken him up on his offer if she hadn’t been worried her damn dress would split in two. “Maybe when we’re naked,” she said instead, Devil Ísa in full flower.

Groaning, he doubled over as if she’d punched him.

Her lips twitching despite the melting sexual heat liquefying her bones, she leaned down to slip off her heels.

Sailor waited, his hand firm around hers, until she was done. Taking the heels from her, he carried them in his other hand as Ísa padded beside him on the grass that lay on this side of the pebbled path. The path ended at a weathered wooden gate, which, when opened, put them at the top of a narrow walkway that led down onto a beach Ísa couldn’t yet see but could hear.

Her heart crashed in time with the waves as they made their way down to the beach while the mansion behind them pulsed with light and music. But she didn’t turn and run away, she didn’t stop and talk herself out of it, she didn’t attempt to be a sensible adult. She followed a gorgeous, blue-eyed man down a dirt pathway to an effectively private beach.

The sand that had been tracked onto the path was gritty under her feet, the air coming off the sea cool but not cold.

“The water’s going to be icy, isn’t it?” she whispered to his broad back.

“Don’t worry, spitfire. I’ll keep you warm,” was the deep-voiced response. “Stop here.” Jumping down to the beach, he reached up to grab her by the waist, swinging her down as if she were a featherweight.

Something fluffy and mushy came to life inside Ísa. “Here?”

Shaking his head, he said, “Raj told me there’s like a little cove area—not a proper cove, but caused by— There.”

Ísa saw it at once. A huge tree had fallen into the water at some point and smashed up against some rocks where it appeared to be stuck. Between the jutting rocks on either side and the fallen trunk was a naturally created pool. The water within it was pretty calm, and it looked as if they could get to it by clambering over some rocks that didn’t appear too sharp or slippery.

Of course, she’d be walking over those rocks naked.

Ísa looked up at the moon. Imagined it shining on the stark white of her body. Gulped. “Will you close your eyes while I go in the water?” Even Devil Ísa wasn’t up for blinding him with her glow-in-the-dark form.

A glance back. “What’re you going to bribe me with?”

Ísa scowled. “Not pushing you into the water right now.” It was a toothless threat given his muscles and her lack of them.

Rubbing his jaw, he said, “Three tongue kisses. That’s my price, and I’m not budging.”

Ísa wanted to pounce on him all over again. “Two,” she countered.

“Nuh-uh. Three. Or I’m keeping both eyes wide open.” Leaning in, he pressed his nose to hers. “I really want to keep my eyes wide open.”

And Ísa really wanted to kiss him and run her hands all over that sculpted chest. “Three,” she whispered.

He’s a man who is stuck in a continual cycle of grief, guilt, and immeasurable pain, and by hiding his secrets and his truths away from everyone, he’s unable to move forward…until a woman enters his life whose very nature brings Raph out of his own head, helping him to live again, even if he’s not fully committed, but it’s unclear if Beth has what it takes to help him let go of his past because when all the pieces he’s been hiding begin to fall, the repercussions and consequences that occur may be more than Beth can put back together.

Any reader who has found herself wrapped up in one of Callie Hart’s dark alpha males and/or twisted story lines knows that characters’ looks and actions as well as the book blurb itself can be deceiving…on purpose mind you because we’re meant to have our reading worlds turned upside down as much as the heroine’s life is in the story, which results in authentic reactions and overwhelming feelings.

Right from the start, it’s clear that Raph is more than a shut-in billionaire who simply vanished from existence, and it’s the mystery behind his disappearance that Beth and readers can’t quite understand, and it seems like the harder we try and the closer we get, we’re all left with more questions than answers and more roadblocks than easy pathways.

Callie Hart does a good job of sprinkling clues about Raph’s past throughout the book, but I didn’t truly feel like I understood everything that happened and what it cost everyone involved even after the book concluded. I’m not sure if it’s because the focus changes numerous times and as more events play out, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly how they all go together or if it’s because I didn’t feel like the characters, especially Raph, were fleshed out enough to wrap my head around all that is revealed.

It’s clear that there’s an intense connection between Raph and Beth and it makes sense that this domineering man would have his kinks when it comes to intimate relationships, but those scenes didn’t seem as fluid as I needed them to be…they seemed inserted at points that didn’t quite fit the flow of the story line.

While I did have a few issues with Raph and Beth’s story, I still enjoyed Mr. North and the many twists and turns that take place, and it’s clear that Callie Hart can write dark romance time and time again…even if there will never be anyone as badass amazing as Zeth Mayfair;)

Each time Karina Halle releases a new story, I’m always amazed by how diverse of an author she is…how easily it is for her to write quality contemporary romance, new adult romance, dark romance, and even paranormal romance. Halle’s versatility as a writer is one reason romance readers adore her books and willingly follow her when she switches between her darker tales that place readers in quite the alternative settings and those straight forward romances that speak to the hearts of readers and take them on one heck of an emotional and powerful journey.

Halle’s newest release, Bad at Love, is so much more than a typical friends-to-lovers’ story because even though there are traditional plot points in the text that illustrate that specific trope, there are also life’s teachings included in the story line – lessons about loss, abuse, prejudice, and self doubt. Laz and Marina, Halle’s poet and beekeeper, are extremely relatable characters because it’s easy to both sympathize as well as empathize with their dating histories as well as the their family backgrounds and the situations they have had to endure because of the choices of others.

I see so much of myself in Marina that it’s mind-boggling. She’s awkward and quirky, but she’s also passionate and driven. She doesn’t have much self confidence when it comes to the opposite sex because she’s a nervous nelly, always feeling like she’s going to ruin a relationship before one even gets started, setting herself up for defeat right out of the gate. But anyone who took the time to see beyond her bee keeping stories and her weird idiosyncrasies would see how phenomenal of a woman she truly is and anyone would be lucky to be loved and cherished by her. 

I’ll admit…it took me a bit to see past Laz’s view of himself as a serial monogamist…it’s true he never cheated, but as soon as he was done with one girl, he moved on to the next, never fully committing himself to any of them. I will say that the reasons behind his tendencies make sense once it’s explained, but it made me question his motives for ‘dating’ Marina and if he was capable of ‘real’ feelings. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Laz; he had his own quirks and oddities, which made him real instead of an unattainable hot shot, which will have readers swooning over his poetry, his singing, and his protectiveness. And, I even knew that he would figure his shit out and make things right, but I guess the way he went from one woman right after another turned me off at first.

Bad at Love definitely has all the feels that romance lovers adore; there are sweet and swoon worthy moments as well as hilarious and downright peculiar moments, but the moments that stand out are the ones that are real…the ones that show no pretense of being merely fictional circumstances because the reasons behind Laz’s unwillingness to truly love and commit to someone and Marina’s fear that she’ll never find her ‘flower,’ her person, are thoughts and actions that will resonate with readers because these characters could easily be one of us, struggling to make the right decisions when it comes to our heart and trying to understand why the kind of love that everyone else seems to find, is always just out of our reach or we don’t think we’re worthy of it due to a past that has never been addressed.

Karina Halle, once again, crafts a heartfelt story that readers can get lost in…the pacing of the story was perfect because Laz and Marina didn’t start anything until it was clear it was what they both wanted and the intimacy between them truly illustrated where their feelings were headed…or maybe where they’ve always been.
