From the bestselling author of Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey

Wren Ballard is trying to find herself.

She never expected to be divorced at twenty-seven, but now that the court date has passed, it’s official. The paperwork is final. Her feelings on it aren’t.

Spending the summer in a small mountain town outside Seattle is exactly what she needs. The peaceful scenery is a given, the cat with the croaky meow is a surprise, but the real kicker? A broody neighbor with nice arms, a strange reputation, and absolutely no interest in her.

Anderson Black is perfectly fine being lost.

He doesn’t care about the town’s new resident — he’s too busy fighting his own demons. But when he’s brought face to face with Wren, he can see her still-fresh wounds from a mile away. What he doesn’t see coming is his need to know who put them there — or his desperation to mend them.

Sometimes getting lost is the way to find yourself. Sometimes healing only adds a new scar. And sometimes the last place you expected to be is exactly where you find home.

I had just grabbed my oversized hat and slipped my sunglasses on when I spotted Anderson walking up the drive with a large trash bag slung over his shoulder. He wore a simple, black V-neck and distressed jeans, an outfit way too dark and hot for the heat. A light sheen of sweat gathered on his neck as he made his way toward my cabin, his eyes hidden behind all-black sunglasses.

“Change your mind?” I asked, not even fighting the grin on my face as I walked outside and leaned against the banister.

Anderson squinted up at me, his boots heavy as they hit each stair. “About?”

“Tubing?” I asked. That was why he was here, right?

“Oh.” He shook his head as he hit the top stair, shrugging the bag off his shoulders to hold it by the neck in one fist. “No, I have somewhere to be…” His voice trailed off, and even through the tinted shades of his glasses I felt his eyes on my chest. I’d strapped on my favorite boho print bathing suit and paired it with a dainty gold chain that wrapped around my neck once before dipping between my chest and crossing over my ribs.

He sniffed, holding the bag out toward me. “I just came to drop these off. My clothes. Well, the ones that could probably use a little TLC.”

My eyes lit up and I reached for the bag, but Anderson snatched it back, brows shooting up into his forehead.

“No frills, Wren.”

I threw my hands up in surrender. “I promise.”

He smirked, just slightly, and handed the bag over, tucking his hands in his front pockets.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come?” I asked, peering into the bag at my project before setting it just inside the cabin and locking the door behind me.

“I can’t,” he said, lips pressed together. He was tense, the muscles on his forearms tight as he glanced around at pretty much everything but me.

I opened my mouth to ask why but was cut off by the sound of a truck flying into my drive, tires sliding against the gravel.

Tucker was in the driver’s seat with Davie in the passenger. Sarah and Yvette sat in the back, laughing with their hands up as the truck skidded to a stop. They were both sprawled out on a pile of tubes, wearing bathing suit tops and tiny shorts.

All of their faces froze when they saw Anderson.

“Hey, you ready, Wren?” Tucker asked warily, his eyes moving from where Anderson stood in front of me, to me, and back again.

“Yeah, one sec!” I called back.

I turned to Anderson, but his eyes were hard on Tucker, jaw ticking under his skin. When he faced me once more, an anchor fell from my throat into the pit of my stomach, immobilizing me completely. Because even though I ‘d tried to convince myself I was wrong, I recognized the look in his eyes.

Possession.

And when his nose flared and he took one big step toward me, our chests brushing, his hand reaching out to rest almost imperceptibly on my hip, the anchor in my stomach exploded into flames, burning a desire so fierce I inhaled a toxic breath and didn’t let it go.

“Be careful, okay?” His eyes locked on mine just before he leaned in and swiftly kissed my cheek.

He turned on his heel and jogged down the stairs and past the truck. Sarah called his name, but he didn’t acknowledge her, just kept his gaze forward until he’d disappeared from view.

And then everyone looked at me.

 Review

In today’s society, the idea of being selfish carries a pretty severe negative connotation with it…the idea that one focuses on him/herself above other people and/or in spite of other people is deemed inappropriate; in fact, the dictionary uses words like “benevolent,” “caring,” and “kind” as antonyms for selfish, portraying the word as having not a single positive attribute. Conversely, people’s view of selflessness is almost spiritual; individuals who put others before themselves are glorified and regarded as superior beings.

Here’s the problem I have with the concept of these two seemingly opposing words – because they are at opposite ends of the spectrum, it appears that an individual cannot be both…that there’s no way for these two qualities to be a part of one person nor does it appear that being selfish can be a positive trait and being selfless be anything other than an admirable characteristic.

But in reading Kandi Steiner’s newest release, Revelry, I’ve found a number of reasons and examples to support the idea that selfishness isn’t always a bad thing and selflessness can end up doing more harm than good. And just as Wren and Anderson teach and learn from one another information that helps them to heal and to feel and live again, readers grow to understand that love is both selfish and selfless, and in order for a couple to have a lasting relationship, they need to allow each other to be exactly who they are, living out their personal dreams as well as those as a couple, not sacrificing themselves for their partner but loving themselves and one another enough to understand when selfishness is warranted, and selflessness is needed.

Wren and Anderson’s story is my first read by Kandi Steiner, and I reveled in the experience of reading her words and understanding the lessons she taught through her emotional storyline and multifaceted characters. This journey that Steiner takes her readers on is one that many will connect with, and, in a way, to experience Wren’s struggles…her fears…her quilt and her shame, readers grow to understand that there is no magical path to clarity because life doesn’t work that way – life is messy and complex and it’s easy to get lost and not be able to find the road back to who one was before, but here’s the thing…maybe getting on a new track is exactly what it takes to live again…to take the broken and battered pieces of oneself and slowly put them back together and while it will definitely no longer resemble what it once did, the new picture that’s created once one’s new self is constructed will be the one that enables a person to know who/what to let go of and who/what to hold on to…

Revelry is an exceptional read because it not only wakes up its characters, helping them to open their eyes to the kind of life they want to live despite the scars from their pasts, but it also allows its readers to understand that having the courage to make life their own should be their focus because if they’re unhappy with themselves and the life they’ve chosen to live then there is no way that there will be anything left to give to another person and the feeling of never being enough will never go away.

Revelry is so much more than a book…it’s a life altering experience because it illustrates a multitude of life’s lessons and then Steiner pushes readers to learn from them and take the path that’s right for them not the one that’s expected of them.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. No one knew what I was hiding. The one thing I’ve been fighting for.

For six years, I’ve never lost focus.

Not until one chance encounter with Alexis Kensington.

Now she’s become my greatest temptation.

She needed a savior and somehow she became mine.

Tingles rushed, my words nothing more than pants as he kissed down through the valley of my breasts. “Maybe you’re just remembering who you are. Who you were always supposed to be.”

I felt as if I was so close to knowing him. This boy who’s beauty had been muted.

He groaned, half pained, half demand. “You almost make me feel like him.”

Yanking me away from the railing, he hoisted me high. My legs were wrapped high around his chest as he carried me the rest of the way to the upper loft. To this magical place where twilight touched every corner, whispered its secrets and danced in its shadows.

He’d barely tossed me to the bed when he was over me, shoving up my dress and ripping it free, my fingers just as frantic as I tore his shirt over his head. I searched him, hands racing across his chest, feeling the wild beat of his conflicted heart, hearing the struggle that whimpered from his spirit.

He angled down and captured my mouth again. He kissed and bit and nipped as he held my face steady in the frame of his hands. Then he edged down, driving me wild with this murmurs of kisses at my jaw and ear and neck.

“Zachary…please.”

I writhed, dizziness rushing as I stared up at him towering over me.

His body was brimming with hard, cut muscle. Muscle that jumped and ticked and flexed, as if the desire thrumming in his veins stalked back and forth, a caged predator, searching for a way to be released.

My gaze traveled across the tattoo on his chest.

Relentless.

“Fight for me,” I begged.

Reiss-Bombshell-23344-CV-FT-v6

Bombshell by CD Reiss

Publication Date: May 1st, 2017

Publisher: Montlake

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

Hollywood bad boy Brad Sinclair always gets his way, whether it’s the role he wants or the bikini-clad model he has to have. But when a bombshell gets dropped in his lap in the form of a dimpled five-year-old from a forgotten relationship, he knows his life is about to change forever.

Cara DuMont isn’t exactly thrilled when she gets assigned to be the nanny for the latest box-office king. She has one rule: no celebrity fathers, especially single ones with devilish good looks and rock-hard abs.

But as soon as Cara meets Brad and his adorable little girl, she knows she’s in for a world of trouble. Because there’s something about the way Brad looks at her that makes her believe that some rules are meant to be broken…

Excerpt

He was tapping on my bedroom window. It was 2:17 in the morning.

I got out of bed, dressed in sweatpants and black T-shirt and slapped the window open. He practically fell through it, adorable in his wet tuxedo and red eyes.

“You’re drunk.”

“I like you. I want you to like me.”

“Go to bed.”

He leaned back out the window, paused. “Do you like me?”

“Against my better judgment, I do.”

“Okay.”

He was so drunk he could barely stand.

“Please go to bed.”

He gave me a salute and walked right through a sprinkler, toward the front house. I closed the window. Brad was lying in the grass facedown, arms and legs in a big X, getting sprinkled on.

I could leave him out there.

I could, he deserved it. But I couldn’t.

I put on sneakers and a hoodie and went outside. He was face-first in a mud puddle. The sprinklers had shut off.

“Brad?”

He didn’t move. I pulled his arm until he was on his back, then pulled both wrists and pulled forward. If I’m making it sound easy, it wasn’t. I slipped and fell in wet grass, and grunted like a tennis player. But I got him to sitting. Half his gorgeous face was dotted with mud.

“Brad?”

No answer. I slapped him. Nothing. Slapped again, harder. He groaned.

Then I pulled my arm back and really hauled off and whacked him.

“Ow.”

“You have to wake up. I can’t carry you.”

“That hurt.”

I crouched, getting my shoulder under his arm.

“Okay, I’m going to count to three. On three, stand up.”

“Do you know you’re beautiful?”

“One.”

“And you smell like a fruit cup.”

“Two.”

He looked at me, the weight of his head tilting his face at an angle to mine.

“You’re the queen of the house.”

“Three.”

We lurched up. Took a step left. Adjusted. Stood steady.

“Can I just sleep here?”

“No. Nicole isn’t going to find your drunk ass on the lawn in the morning. Lean on me.”

We took one step forward, then two. I held his wrist with one hand and his waist with the other. The front of his tuxedo shirt was brown with mud. I got wet wherever his clothes touched me.

“Do you have fantasies, ever?” He hopped onto a new subject as if it was completely natural.

“Like about what?” I asked. His arm around me, his breath soft in my ear. Even his dependence was kind of a fantasy.

“You know what bothers me about fantasies?”

“Watch this chair here. Whoa.” I pulled him left, narrowly missing tripping over a lounger.

“You never know if you’re getting it right,” he said.

I turned to him, and found his eyes taking up my entire field of vision and my nose two inches from his.

“Like when I fantasize about fucking you.”

We almost tripped on the entrance. I swallowed my lungs, stomach, and heart in one gulp. He was drunk. He didn’t mean it. He never thought about fucking me.

Not Brad Sinclair.

He was my boss.

About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00022]

Hiring my brother’s best friend was not on my to-do list.

Neither was he.

Expanding my dirty cocktail bar into food was supposed to be easy, except finding a chef in my little town of Whiskey Key is anything but.

Until Parker Hamilton comes home—bringing his Michelin starred chef’s hat with him.

He has no work. I need someone like him in my new kitchen.

There’s just one problem: I hate his cocky, filthy-mouthed, sexy-as-hell guts.

Even if I might want him. Just a little…

Working for my best friend’s sister? Not on my to-do list.

She’s another story.

Whiskey Key was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, except I haven’t reached the heights I have by lying in a hammock drinking cocktails. So when Raven Archer is desperate for a chef, I offer up my skills.

I’m bored. She needs what I can give her.

Except there’s a problem: I’ve always hated her.

Her and her big, blue eyes, sassy mouth, and killer curves.

If only I didn’t want her.

Review

Boy does Emma Hart have a flair for creating heroines who are sassy, “sharp-tongued” vixens – women who know how to dress guys down with just a few words and a venomous stare!

And, I would go as far as to say that her newest heroine, Raven Archer, just might be the sassiest of all Hart’s female leads because she uses her sarcasm and her wit as a shield, as a control mechanism, allowing her to hide her true feelings behind her stubbornness as well as her snark and man oh man can Raven bring the scathing words – ones that knock her adversary down a few notches and makes him rethink going against her hot temper.

But there’s one opponent that willingly riles Raven up and pushes her buttons just enough to force her acidic words and ill-mannered gestures, and he’s been the bane of her existence since childhood, and even though they haven’t seen each other in three and a half years, Parker Hamilton easily falls back into old habits with Raven, aggravating her with his cocksure attitude and jackass antics but also filling her filthy mind with tempting images that definitely cross the line between mortal enemies not to mention the fact that Parker’s supposed to be off-limits because he’s Raven’s brother’s best friend.

The sexual tension between Raven and Parker is off-the-charts from the very beginning of their story, which begs the question if all of their mutual disdain as kids transformed into underlying desire for one another as they got older and now that they reconnected as adults, their feelings of frustration actually translate into feelings of desire and the temptation to act on those emotions may be too much for them to avoid.

Mixed Up is a fast-paced and hilarious enemies-to-lovers story that oozes sexiness on every page…right down to the names of drinks Raven mixes at her bar, Dirty. And even though there’s a bit of drama – most of which is created by Raven herself – there’s really nothing angsty about the situations that occur in the story because the way it’s written and the type of characters Raven and Parker are as well as the gaggle of family members that descend on Whiskey Key keep a light-hearted feel even in the most complicated parts.

mup2Excerpt

The sound of my phone buzzing on the nightstand was loud, jarring, and very, very annoying.

It wasn’t the most pleasant sound in the world to wake up to.

Groaning, I rolled over and batted my hand around on the top of the nightstand. Then, I realized the bed was vibrating. It was a mammoth effort to open my eyes, but somehow I managed it so I could look down the gap between the cupboard and my bed. Just like I assumed it was, my phone was wedged between the leg of the bed and the wooden side of my nightstand.

I fished it out with my finger. The moment it was free, it stopped ringing.

Of course it did.

I picked it up and looked at the screen. Ryan. I frowned—it was early for him to be calling…wait, no it wasn’t. It was seven-thirty. I’d overslept.

No sooner had I finished the thought than my phone buzzed again. It was Ryan.

“What do you want?” I demanded, answering the phone.

“Did you oversleep?” came his response.

“Maybe. I was tired. What do you want?”

He laughed. “Have you seen Parker?”

“You just woke me up. Do you think I’ve seen Parker?”

“Shall I call back when you’ve had coffee?”

“Can you get to the point of this irritating conversation?” I shoved the covers to the side and swung my legs out of the bed. I hadn’t bothered to throw any clothes on before I’d fallen asleep last night.

Ryan sighed. “Ilsa said Parker didn’t go home last night. She came over this morning when his car wasn’t in the drive and asked me if I knew where he was. I don’t, and you’re the last person I know who would’ve seen him, so I’m calling you.”

I jerked around and looked at the other side of the bed. Messy and unkept, but no Parker.

“No idea.” I swallowed and glanced at the floor. His clothes were gone, too. Only mine remained. “Hold on.” I put my phone down and checked the notification bar. There were no messages from him, so if he wasn’t here and hadn’t gone home, maybe he was downstairs?

I threw an oversized shirt on over my head and quickly pulled some panties up my legs before grabbing my phone again.

“I don’t have any messages from him,” I said, opening my bedroom door. “I can’t hel—” I finished on a scream, because the missing man was standing shirtless in my kitchen.

“Raven?” Ryan said into my ear right as Parker glanced over his shoulder at me. “Are you all right?”

“Ssshhh—shit!” I held my finger in front of my mouth. “Spider!” I said to Ryan. “I walked into the bathroom and there’s a big spider in my tub.”

Parker rubbed his hand down his face and shook his head.

“You’re screaming at a spider?” Ryan’s amusement was evident in his restrained tone.

“It’s a big one. It scared me.” I slammed my bedroom door behind me. “I just locked it in there.”

“It’s a spider.”

“You’re not helping.” This was the worst lie ever. “I need to get rid of it, so I have to go. If I haven’t heard from you by the time Parker starts work, I’ll tell him to call his mom. Bye!” I hung up and threw my phone on the sofa like it was on fire.

“What the hell was that about?” Parker asked, spatula-flipper thingy in hand.

“You’re still here!” It came out as more of a squeak than anything.

He stared at me for a moment. “Yeah, but I’m kind of stuck on the fact I’ve been both a stubbed toe and a spider this week.”

I sunk my fingers into my hair. It was messy, and my fingers got caught on some small knots as they threaded through the locks. “Ryan called and woke me up.” I summarized the phone call. “And I panicked when I saw you, because I didn’t know you were still here.”

“Why wouldn’t I be here?”

“I fell asleep and thought you left!”

He shook his head, turning back to my cooker. “I fell asleep, too. I didn’t wake up until your alarm went off this morning.”

“Why didn’t you wake me up? I’m late and I have to put orders through today.”

“You didn’t move,” he said. “So I shut it off, took a shower, and came to make breakfast.”

Now that he’d mentioned it, I could see his dark hair was wet. “Okay, well, you need to call your mom and tell her you aren’t dead or anything.”

“I’ll text her soon. I can’t do it right after Ryan’s called you, can I? That won’t look suspicious at all.”

“Half an hour. Say I left you a voicemail to see if you were coming into work because you were MIA and you realized you forgot to tell her you weren’t coming home.”

“The fact I have to tell her I’m not coming home is, in itself, ridiculous.”

“And that’s why I live alone.” I smiled and pulled a bottle of water out of the fridge. “What are you making?”

“Omelets. Yia-Yia left me omelet seasoning so I thought I’d try it.”

I peered over his arm at the pan. “Where did you get the the ingredients?” I knew for a fact I didn’t have eggs in my fridge.

“Downstairs.” He glanced at me as if the answer was obvious. Which it was, honestly. “Your fridge is both impressively empty and sadly understocked.”

I shrugged and leaned against the counter. “I don’t eat breakfast unless I’m forced to.”

Parker slid the omelet out of the pan and onto a plate in one smooth movement. Then, he picked up the plate, and held it out to me. “Well, I’m forcing you to eat.”

I might not have been a big breakfast eater, but I wasn’t going to turn down food.

“I can deal with that.” I smiled and reached for the plate, but before I could take it, he swung his arm out wide where I couldn’t reach it.  “Hey!”

He grabbed the front of my shirt, yanking me toward him. I’d barely righted my footing when he dropped his mouth to mine and planted a slow, easy kiss on my lips. Releasing me like he’d done nothing out of the ordinary, he put the plate back between us and also handed me a knife and fork. “Morning.”

I snatched the plate and cutlery before he could take it away again. “Thanks. I think?”

He laughed as I sat at the table. “Your good morning was screaming at me. The least you could do was kiss me.”

I rolled my eyes and stabbed my fork into the cheesy, melty, eggy goodness. “You should have announced yourself. Left your pants on the floor or something.”

“I’ll remember that for next time.”

“Next time? This is going to happen again?” I was teasing him, because let’s be honest. There were worse things in life than having sex with a hot guy, then waking up to find said hot guy making you breakfast while half-naked.

“Yep. I’ll just remember to call my mom first.”

I laughed, then moaned as I finally put the first forkful of breakfast into my mouth.

Parker side-eyed me. “If you want to finish your breakfast in peace, don’t do that again.”

THE HOT SHOT

GAME ON Book 4

By Kristen Callihan

Release Day: April 18th

First we were friends. Then we were roommates. Now I want more…

What can I say about Chess Copper? The woman is capable of bringing me to my knees. I know this about five minutes after getting naked for her.

No one is more surprised than me. The prickly photographer my team hired to shoot our annual charity calendar isn’t my usual type. She’s defense to my offense, a challenge at every turn. But when I’m with her, all the regrets and darkness goes away. She makes life fun.

I want to know Chess, be close to her. Which is a bad idea.

Chess is looking for a relationship. I’ve never given a woman more than one night. But when fate leaves Chess without a home, I step up and offer her mine. We’re roommates now. Friends without benefits. But it’s getting harder to keep our hands off each other. And the longer we live together the more I realize she’s becoming my everything.

Trick is… Now that I’ve made her believe I’m a bad bet, how do I convince her to give this player a true shot at forever?

Review

What I love most about Kristen Callihan’s Game On series is the uniqueness of her heroes and heroines; she takes the quintessential stereotypes of athletes, artists, college students, etc. and puts her own spin on them, illustrating her characters’ qualities that are beneath the muscles, arrogance, and beauty…the attributes that actually make them who they are not just what fans and everyday people see and believe.

Chess Cooper and Finn Mannus’ first impressions of each other definitely stir up feelings, but they’re not the kind that make them want to get to know one another better; in fact, the scathing exchange they have only reiterates how different Chess and Finn are and the fact that they have nothing in common despite the superficial attraction that seems to be simmering underneath the outward disdain they carry for one another after one interaction.

But as Chess and Finn study one another’s powerful stares and look past her severe demeanor and his asshat tendencies, they realize that there’s a connection between them that just might be worth pursuing because the open honesty and real moments they share and Finn’s ability to simply be when he’s with Chess rarely happen in their everyday lives, making their friendship absolutely essential to both of them.

Kristen Callihan does a fantastic job of capturing Finn’s dynamic personality through his words and actions. He may be the hotshot quarterback, but he’s so much more than a pretty face and an athletic body. There are layers to Finn that he rarely shows due to his profession and his fans’ expectations, but when he’s with Chess, he can be himself, and that’s when readers truly see Finn’s depth and the reasons behind his outwardly demeanor. He is 100% real with Chess, and even though that scares the hell out of him, it also allows him to understand just how significant his bond with Chess is and why despite the fact that she might be distracting to his football career, she’s essential to Finn the man, which is so much more important than any of his teammates realize.

Chess may have shit luck with men, but she’s never met anyone like Finn Mannus, and when he steps up for her when she needs him the most, she realizes that the smug, charming man she initially met is not who Finn truly is, and as she gets to know the real Finn, she finds herself falling for a man who may be a “bad bet,” but one who may also might be the most perfectly imperfect man for her.

I love that as the Game On series progresses, Callihan doesn’t remain at the college level; she takes her heroes and heroines beyond their college football days and brings them to primetime, which is a much denser setting – one where a multitude of situations can be used as obstacles for each story’s couple as well as offer them ways to expand who they are.

Because of Finn and Chess’ pasts, there’s a risk factor involved in pursuing anything between them and Callihan does a great job illustrating those issues and then proving to readers and to her main characters that there are no guarantees in life and not taking a chance on love or on something one wants is no way to live, especially when life is so short to begin with and the fact that “bad bets” don’t have to end in negative results.

FINN

She sits quietly as I eat, and shakes her head when I offer her a sandwich section. Because I’m hungry, and because I don’t like the idea of her having to wait for me to eat, I wolf down my food. The brownie follows with a few, quick bites.

Wiping my hands on a napkin, I set the plate and empty can on a side table, and then let out a contented sigh. “Thanks. I needed that.”

Her smile is small and quick. “I should have fed you as soon as you got here.”

“I’m good now.”

Chess braces her hands on the seat and leans forward to watch her feet as we slowly rock the swing. Silence descends, thick and awkward, and for the first time in her presence, I’m at a loss for words.

I don’t know this girl. Not really, and yet I’ve inserted myself into her life with a determination I usually reserve for winning games. Except I have no endgame here. I told her I want to be friends. But how does that work for us?

Our friends and lives couldn’t be any more different. Parties for me are self-congratulatory events, filled with people whose one focus seems to be bolstering my ego, followed by me searching for a quick hookup. And my friends are all part of football in some way. We talk football or sports. It’s a narrow focus life, but it’s my comfort zone. That chafes too, knowing I live a life that seems wild and free to outsiders but is actually small and structured on the inside.

The silence has stretched too long. I should go. But I don’t move. If I go, I know it will be the end of whatever this is. Embarrassment will have me avoiding seeking her out again. Likely, she’ll do the same. And that will be that.

The knowledge sits like a stone on my chest.

“I’m sorry about my friends,” Chess says. “They can be uncomfortably brazen.”

“So can mine.” I shrug. “Your friends are…fun.”

Her lips pull tight. “They can be. But they were definitely giving me—and by extension—you shit tonight.” She bites her bottom lip. “I don’t think they know what to make of you.”

“So I wasn’t imagining things.”

“’Fraid not.”

The novel sensation of being a fish tossed into the wrong pond grows. I’ve taken away Chess’s fun by coming here, and I’m sorry for it.

“I shouldn’t have asked you to come here,” Chess says in a low voice.

She’s only echoing my thoughts but the stone sitting on my chest pushes harder against my ribs.

Chess makes a small sound, as if she’s trying to laugh but can’t. “Parties suck when you arrive halfway through and don’t know anyone.”

“I know you,” I point out quietly.

She turns and the porch light illuminates her face. Green eyes met mine and hold, as a slow, true smile curls over her cherry lips. Something inside of me shifts and slides. I want to kiss Chester Copper. Haul her onto my lap and make out with her like we’re teenagers hiding out at our parents’ party. But that’s not what she invited me here for.

“I wanted to see you,” she confesses in that husky morning voice that goes straight to my cock. She turns away and stares out into the darkness. “It’s weird, you know? But hanging out with you was so unexpected it kind of felt like I imagined the whole thing.”

I know exactly what she means. My hand settles next to hers, close enough that our pinkies touch. That small point of contact sparks along my skin, makes me want to move closer. I hold steady because I don’t trust myself not to act. “I wanted to see you too,” I tell her. “It’s been a long fucking day.”

I hadn’t planned to admit that, but it feels good to tell her.

Chess eases back against the seat and then curls her fingers over mine with a light squeeze. The unexpected touch holds all my attention. It’s nothing more than a simple offer of comfort, and here I am twitching in my seat as if she’d cupped my dick instead. I’m in so much trouble here because this woman is getting to me in ways I don’t know how to navigate. But I don’t pull away. Not one fucking chance of that.

Chess speaks, pulling me attention back to our conversation. “So tell me about it.”

I can’t remember the last time anyone asked me to tell them about my day. Likely, no one ever has.

So I do. And with every word that leaves my mouth, a little bit more of my stress eases. No, I don’t yet truly know Chess. And yes, our lives are different. But there’s no way I’m ending this. Because when it’s just her and me, everything else falls away. I’m not going to let myself forget that again.

Review

I’m a huge lover of sports romance stories, especially ones like K. Bromberg’s The Player; Bromberg’s newest release has a story line that incorporates the perfect blend of steam, drama, and baseball, and her main characters, Easton and Scout, are multidimensional, allowing readers to truly understand the reasons behind their actions and what’s at stake for their personal as well as their professional lives.

Easton Wylder may be a cocksure ball player, but there’s more to him than just his catching and batting skills, and when Scout Dalton enters his life, those other attributes are exactly what make her fall for him, realizing that not only is Easton a god on the field but he’s everything she never knew she needed, and for once in her life, she’s more afraid to leave him than to risk her heart being broken yet again.

It took me a bit to completely warm up to Scout, but that’s only because she held everything so close to the vest, not allowing her fears, her emotions, or her true feelings to come out until she was ready. Once she got a handle on everything and recognized what she was building with Easton even if she knew it was unprofessional, it was almost like she felt freer to be who she truly is and Easton is partly responsible for easing her mind and her heart.

K. Bromberg creates the absolute best setting for Easton and Scout’s story; both of them love the game of baseball and because of the sport’s importance in their lives, the game becomes a pivotal character – one that holds both of their futures in its hands.

It’s made clear throughout The Player that K. Bromberg took the time to do her baseball research, and in understanding what it takes to play professional ball as well as the business aspects of the game, she presents readers with a complex knowledge of America’s favorite pastime and allows them to see why it’s so much more than a game to Easton and the Austin Aces.

K. Bromberg hits one hell of a homerun with The Player, and even though the story ends with a cliffhanger, it’s the perfect starting point for book two because everything Easton and Scout have worked for rests upon a team and a sport that seems to be more about business than anything else, which means readers will have to wait to see what the last pitch in the last inning means for both Easton and Scout.

Review

It’s amazing how one’s life can change in an instant…how priorities and wants get turned upside down…how one decision can lead to a much different life than the one that was always envisioned.

And, Max Alexander, Kendall Ryan’s newest hero in her Roommates’ series, can attest to this very idea because with two knocks on his door, everything he thought he never wanted becomes the only things he knows he can’t live without.

At the beginning of The House Mate, Max goes from being a man solely focused on growing his business with no personal life whatsoever to a single dad who instantly falls in love with his daughter and hires a woman to be his live-in nanny – the same woman who he can’t seem to stop thinking about in not so boss/employee ways.

Addison Lane’s life has definitely not gone the way she had hoped and now that she’s lost her boyfriend, her job, and her home, she’s also lost her self-confidence and who she is as a 25 year old woman – one who should be living her life to the fullest, not worrying about whether or not she’s to blame for how things have turned out when she had no control over those actions whatsoever.

But what she does have control over is her attraction to her employer…at least she hopes she does because being a nanny may not be her dream job, but it’s one she adores because Dylan’s an amazing baby who becomes her world and putting her first is what’s important even if there’s a chance that Max can help mend her broken heart.

Max is definitely one of my favorite single dads; the way he jumps feet first into the role and learns as he goes without hesitating to step up makes him extremely swoonworthy. He may not have all of the answers and the situation may not be ideal, especially with how and why he was introduced to his one year old daughter, but she quickly becomes his world, which Kendall Ryan illustrates perfectly through Max’s words and actions.

It’s easy to see why Max willingly shakes up his life for his two new women; Dylan and Addison are so easy to love – Dylan because she is a precious little girl who loves unconditionally and Addison because she makes Max’s life easier and fuller all by just her presence and her loving ways.

Kendall Ryan’s Roommates’ series continues to offer readers’ sweet and sexy reads with just enough tension to keep them on their toes, ceaselessly turning pages to see if the hero and heroine can work things out, get past the few obstacles that stand in their way, and create a lasting connection that brings them a lifetime of love and happiness.
