If there’s one thing I’ve learned since joining the blogger world and indulging in all of the smutty goodness of romance and erotica reads, it’s that sex sells, and there’s a reader for almost any kind of book written. Indie authors have taken the book industry by storm, and Amazon has enabled horny women around the world to get their smut on in secret because instead of holding a paperback copy with an indecent image on its cover, they can now indulge in their guilty pleasure without causing any raised eyebrows or indignant looks. But criticism and negative attention have come hand in hand with the ability to self-publish because supposedly, in the “real world,” literature reins, and there’s no comparison to the trash that’s being published at will by romance writers.

Before this review goes any further, I have a confession to make – a few years ago, I would probably have fit in with the literary snobs who turned their noses down at anyone who read smut. I spent 6 years working towards my undergraduate degree in English and then moving on to acquire my Masters in English. Throughout my collegiate career, I only read what could be called literary prose – texts that were highly analytical and perhaps a bit highbrow. But once I became a high school English teacher, I knew I needed a break from the canonical works…I needed a way to escape and read material where I didn’t have to overanalyze its structure or content, and I definitely found it in the romance community.

To me, Karina Halle’s SMUT exposes the stigma that has been given to romance indie writers and proves that, while there may be self-published authors who simply publish books with very little content other than gratuitous amounts of sex, there is a plethora of quality writers who know how to embed steamy scenes amidst highly witty, dramatic, and well written prose.

Karina Halle is one of my favorite romance writers because she doesn’t allow her books to be confined to a set formula or category, and there are always life lessons to be learned and false ideas to be exposed. In SMUT, Halle weaves a story that intertwines reality and fiction, allowing fantasies to be acted out and nerdom to be embraced instead of ridiculed.

Amanda Newland and Blake Crawford are both aspiring writers who love words and the art of creating fantastical stories, and despite the negative views about their aspirations, their craft is important to them and allows them an avenue for self-expression – one they can’t find anywhere else. And, despite their need to keep their co-written stories a secret, Amanda and Blake embark on a self-publishing journey – one that may not completely showcase their literary prowess but one that proves there are readers who embrace the world of smut and all of its sexual exploits.

SMUT is a humorous, steamy, and introspective read – one that entices as well as enlightens readers about the world of romance writers and those critics who look down on this genre. There are truly panty melting scenes between Amanda and Blake as they work through their writer’s block in creative and sexually pleasing ways. Blake Lovecox definitely knows how to please the masses and Amanda and Blake also find ways to improve their prose and craft stories that speak to them even more so than the smut they write together.

She holds my gaze for a moment and something passes over her. Regret, maybe. Then she nods. “Sit down. Let’s work.”

And so we do. And for the first time in a long time, it’s strained. I’m about to suggest maybe we need the Estonian vodka anyway when she lets out an exasperated sigh over something she’s reading.

It happens to be something I wrote.

“What?” I ask, wondering what I did wrong.

She gives me the are you kidding me? look. “Okay, I was ignoring it earlier but I think you need to get a grip on some of this shit. This simply does not happen.”

“Explain, please.”

“I just think it’s unrealistic for there to be so much talking, let alone the fact that the first time they do it it’s in a public place.”

“Too much talking?”

“Yeah.” she scans over the document. “You know, give me your cock, oh you feel so good, harder, harder, you’re so big, fuck me harder big boy.”

“Have you even had good sex?” I ask incredulously.

She flinches. “Of course I have. And it’s none of your business.”

“We’re writing about sex. It’s completely my business. I’m not letting you interject your edits based on your personal experiences about sex because believe me, if the sex is good, you’re moaning my name.”

She raises her chin. “Maybe all those girls were faking it.”

Oh, brilliant.

“Excuse me?” I say, hands pressed against the table, nearly getting out of my chair. “You have no idea. I pride myself in giving a girl as many bloody orgasms as she can handle.”

“Bloody orgasms don’t sound like fun,” she jokes softly.

“They can be if you’re into knife play,” I tell her, even though that’s not exactly what I meant. Still, she scrunches up her nose. “Don’t knock it until you try it, but that’s neither here nor there. When you were with Alan, he must have made you come at least a few times.”

If he didn’t, I feel like finding the guy and showing him a thing or two for wasting four years of her life.

“Yeah,” she says flatly.

“And in the middle of that orgasm, didn’t you want to yell a few things?”

“Sometimes.”

“And why didn’t you?”

She looks at her nails as if they’re suddenly fascinating. “It didn’t seem right. It was…too intimate. I would have felt dumb. He didn’t like any of that stuff.”

The plot thickens. “Any of what stuff?”

“Sex that didn’t involve the missionary position or the bed.”

My mouth drops open. My brain and penis can’t compute this. “I feel so sorry for you.”

We must remedy this.

She glares at me. “It’s not like I didn’t want to do it. I did. And he did try it. Most of it. But it always went back to the same old.”

I knew it. She’s a nerd on the streets and a freak in the sheets.

“I don’t mean to brag,” I tell her in all seriousness. “But you do realize that I could give you an orgasm in thirty seconds.”

Her eyes widen. I can’t tell if she’s horrified or intrigued. “I don’t believe you and I don’t want you to try.”

She’s not getting it. I frown, trying to explain. “If you’re having good sex and it’s with someone you’re comfortable with, you won’t worry about holding back. You’ll cry out all the nonsense you want, you’ll make noises like a pig and scream like you’re on fire because you truly can’t have a good orgasm unless you’re letting go on all accounts.” I lean back in my chair and study her, running my fingers along my jaw. “I would venture that every time you came with your ex, you were only experiencing half of what you should have been. How is it with your vibrators?”

I expect her to tell me to fuck off, that I’m getting too personal but to my surprise she gives me a small smile. “It’s better. But I do have a roommate with exceptionally good hearing.” She clears her throat. “Anyway, so I guess I’m wrong. The heroine can make all the noise she wants.”

“And have first time sex in public.”

“I don’t know…”

“Believe me, when you finally get a chance to fuck, you don’t care where it is. That’s why I always have a condom in my pocket. And the more public the sex, the sneakier you have to be, the hotter it is.”

“But in the book you would never get caught.”

“You don’t always get caught in real life too.”

I can see she wants to ask me where I’ve done it but she loses her nerve. “Okay.” She looks back to the document. “I accept defeat.”

But I don’t want her to. I want to prove to her I’m right and not have her take my word.

Is there a non-creepy way to show her just how amazing good sex can feel? I’m thinking not.

Or…maybe there is.

“Speak as you find.”

I absolutely love this advice, and it’s a lesson that’s pivotal to learn in all areas of life but especially when someone is in the public eye, where things get twisted and manipulated.

In the political realm, it’s difficult to speak openly and honestly because there is always someone waiting to spin things any way they want to in order to paint a much different picture than the one the candidate wants to show. For much of his political career, Barrett Landry has been led by his team to do whatever it takes to win, even if that means going against his principles and not going with his gut. But a chance encounter with Alison Baker, a woman who knows first hand what can happen in the smoke and mirrors world of politics, opens Barrett’s eyes to what it means to truly take risks and have the guts to speak much more than half-truths, accomplishing the things he perceives as important not what’s important to the people who try to tell him what to do.

Alison Baker is a strong woman who’s had to build herself back up after being put through the wringer and destroyed by her ex and his numerous political scandals. She’s extremely hesitant to start anything with Barrett no matter how much she wants him, which makes sense because she has no desire to be thrust into the media spotlight again. But even though I completely understood Alison’s fears, I’ll admit that I did get kind of frustrated with her actions at times because she could tell from the start that Barrett is nothing like her ex-husband; in fact, he shows on numerous occasions how much he wants her in his life. But Adriana Locke does such a great job of exploring Alison’s fears and explaining them so thoroughly that regardless of my frustration, I couldn’t fault Alison for wanting a bit of distance and time to think…I think the romantic in me just wanted her to let go of her past and live in the present with Barrett but clearly Alison’s concerns were seared into her heart and soul, forcing her to be cautious, especially for her son.

Adriana Locke not only illustrates the effect bad press and the power of the media have on politics, but she also gives readers a behind the scenes look at how manipulative and backhanded the political world truly is. With all of the double dealing and greasing of palms that take place, it’s a wonder if political leaders ever truly stand on their own principles or if they simply take the positions they’re told to in order to get the votes or the backing they need. And with the state of the race for the presidency, I couldn’t help but align various issues in Sway to the reality of today’s presidential election.

Barrett and Alison’s story is a fantastic start to Locke’s new Landry Family Series, and I have to say that I’m looking forward to getting Linc’s story and seeing what lucky lady wins his heart.

Oh, and by the way, I’d absolutely vote for Barrett Landry!

Throttle Me, Joey and Suzy’s story, set the tone of the whole series and in Honor Me, readers get another inside look into how their family has grown and what all of the other Gallo couples are up to since we last saw them.

Honor Me does a great job of illustrating the reality of parenthood and the disconnect that sometimes happens when children come into a couple’s world. It also allows readers to see just how strong Joey and Suzy’s love is for each other and how they demonstrate that idea every day in a number of ways that actually get them into a bit of trouble due to their curious daughter and their inability to keep their hands off of each other;)

It’s amazing to see how much the Gallo family has grown and the fact that they’re just as dirty mouthed as they’ve always been. There’s definitely only one Gallo family and I wouldn’t want them to change because they love hard, fight dirty, and protect their own, and all three of those ideas are clearly illustrated in Honor Me.

“Kilyn, you make me feel something I haven’t felt in a long time. It both excites and scares me. We keep running into each other and Gus would say it was a sign and, fuck I don’t know, maybe it is. All I really know is I want to get to know you better.”

My brow lifted. “Get to know me better how?”

His eyes turned dark while he quickly swept them over me. My body responded with a shudder. When he took a step closer to me, my heart was pounding so loudly I couldn’t hear my own thoughts.

His hand slipped around the back of my neck, pulling me closer.

Oh. Dear. God.

My knees shook as I reached up and grabbed onto his arms to keep myself from falling. Thano softly ran his lips along my neck and a small moan slipped from my mouth.

I could feel his hot breath on my skin as he talked in a low voice. “I want to know what I do that makes the pulse in your neck beat like this.”

My breath caught when he pressed his lips to my neck and whispered, “Eísai tósi ómorfos.”

The foreign words swam around in my mind so beautifully. With my breathing labored, I panted out, “I have no idea . . . what you . . . just said. But you can get to know me in any way you’d like.”

It might have made me sound like a cheap whore, but in that moment I didn’t care. All I cared about was this man was able to bring back feelings I had buried long ago.

And I liked it.

I liked it a lot.
