“Furn! Come on, wake up, Furn. We have to trow the turkury in the oven for Tanksgiving. Everyone is coming today, even Gramma, so we have to get ready. Come on, Furn. Pease?”

I hear the sweet little voice close to my ear, just as Fern starts to wake up. Chuckling, I pull Fern close, whispering, “Sugar, you better get moving before Emma decides to ‘trow the turkury’ in all by herself.”

Pulling away from me, Fern opens her eyes, and Emma’s face lights up before she squeals.

“Furn, you’re awake. Let’s go. We have work to do.”

She flies off the bed like a little hurricane and leaves our room. Thinking of her biological mother, Lydia, I silently thank her for the gift she left behind for us.

Throwing the blankets off, Fern grabs her robe and turns to me.

“Do you want me to start the coffee…oh, and can you see if Charlie’s up yet?”

“Sugar, for you I’ll do anything. I’ll get the coffee while you take care of the little princess. She’s so excited about the holidays. They both deserve it. It’s been hell for both of them since losing Lydia, so we have to make the holidays special for them this year. Ann should be here shortly, I suspect.” Ann’s their grandma, whom we share the kids with.

It’s clear as the story continues that Rand and Cat’s sexual encounters left them both sexually satiated, and now as they spend more time together and get to know one another, both in and outside of the bedroom, their need for each other goes beyond physical, so where that leaves them is a bit up in the air because Rand hasn’t wanted anything more than sex in quite some time and Cat doesn’t feel worthy of someone as fantastic and honorable as Rand.

I absolutely loved Rand Bishop and his white-knight complex. From the very beginning of the story, he gives everything that he is to protect and take care of Cat. He doesn’t use her for her body or take advantage of her in any way. He’s an honorable and trustworthy man who can turn a woman on with just one smoldering look and exploring what’s working between them is definitely something that he wants to do, but he knows that Cat is in a bad place, so he begins with chasing away her demons and proving to her how truly worthy she is.

Sawyer Bennett’s Wicked Series continues to be a highly erotic and decadent one that allows its characters to express their sexual needs and desires in a manner that they find both pleasurable and freeing. But it also goes beyond the sexual experiences that take place at the Silo because the books also illustrate the other wants and needs that the hero and heroine find in each other.

Review

I jumped right into part II of Quinn and Lexi’s story because I was desperate to know what happened after that cliffhanger in part I. Quinn II was way more emotional and frustrating than Quinn I, and part of it is because it’s no longer just Quinn, Lexi, and Kimber…now they have to contend with those who want to split them apart and manipulate the situation for their own benefit, which they do in many devastating ways…ways that have severe repercussions for both Quinn and Lexi.

I have to say that Quinn pissed me off for most of the book, and while I understand his reaction to what happens and consequently his words and actions after, it didn’t stop me from wanting to punch him in the balls! With everything that Lexi and Quinn had already gone through, it just didn’t make sense to me why he took things on blind faith, regardless of how believable it seemed. It took me until the very end of the book to work through my disdain for him, which I still held onto a little, but his tenacity to make amends is commendable, even though it shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Lexi is quite the woman in this series. She may have been sheltered and insecure but to make it through the things she did and still be so forgiving proves how strong of a person she is. I don’t know if I would have been able to get past all of the betrayals and nastiness like she did. JC Cliff does a good job of illustrating Lexi’s struggles through the latter half of the book; it was devastating to witness her battle and what made it worse was Quinn’s behavior. Quinn allowed his anger to consume his decisions, costing him a lot along the way, and those choices really appalled me, which made it difficult to cheer for him at the end.

Review

Quinn is a pretty intense read for its length, which only adds to the intrigue and suspense that JC Cliff creates, not only due to the lack of insight into what Lexi is running from but also from the misinformation that Quinn has going into this mission for Alexis’ father. What adds to the buildup of the storyline is the setting of almost all of the action. Alexis escaped into the forest of the mountains, and while there are trials to follow, she doesn’t have the first clue about hiking or roughing it and the dangers of her path don’t bode well for her surviving on her own out there for an extended amount of time.

Quinn definitely knows his way around the great outdoors, and he’s more than prepared for it, but what he’s not prepared for is the intensity of his attraction to Alexis or how he’s supposed to deny his feelings for her and not claim her as his own. Cliff does a good job of showing how palpable the sexual tension is between Quinn and Alexis and the risks of giving into those desires. Because readers are privy to both of their perspectives, it’s easy to understand that they will ultimately give into their feelings for one another, but although Lexi finally tells Quinn her secrets, the ones he’s holding might be too much for them to work through, especially when Quinn’s demanded honesty from her, and he hasn’t given it in return.

With the cliffhanger ending, it will be interesting to see how everything plays out. It’s clear that Alexis’ enemies are closing in, but it’s unclear if she’ll trust Quinn enough to protect her from who and what she’s running from.

Review

Duncan and Amber’s story explores the idea of what preconceived notions and past experiences can do to a new relationship. And, regardless of how promising what Duncan and Amber have together is, it’s hard to not question or have faith in someone who seems to represent everything that crushed them both before.

Amber Johnson only has contempt for professional athletes due to her father’s actions and the humiliation he caused both her and her mom with his scandals and cheating. She and her mom used to have money, status, and material goods, but now Amber works two jobs and sends her mother money because her father’s fall from grace shattered all of their lives. Amber’s incredibly independent, which makes things difficult for her and Duncan because he’s a helper; he likes to take care of people he cares about, but she doesn’t want handouts; she doesn’t want to owe anyone, especially someone in the spotlight as a professional hockey player.

Duncan Armstrong may be a hotshot hockey player, but he’s still a farm boy from Wisconsin who loves his family and wants to be liked for more than just his bank account. Duncan hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to female attention; he’s used to high maintenance women who use him for his money, so when he meets Amber, he doesn’t want to like her…he doesn’t want there to be anything between them because all he sees is another chick who wants him for his money and nothing else. But there’s just something about Amber that makes him want to know her and have her even though he doesn’t have much faith of not being used again.

A lot of the problems that Duncan and Amber have are due to the fact that they can’t get out of their own way. They both have deep rooted insecurities that rule how they act and sometimes what they say, which makes them butt heads quite a bit, and when you add Amber’s mom to the mix, things go from bad to worse before there’s any chance of Duncan and Amber getting through the mess they’re creating for themselves.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Icing. At times, I felt like the plot dragged a bit, and I got extremely frustrated with how both Duncan and Amber were handling things, but for me to react that way means that Kelly Jamieson created complex characters who would have less than appealing qualities. Duncan and Amber’s stubbornness caused a lot of the issues that were between them, but it also allowed them to fight for what they wanted when everything seemed beyond repair. And, that’s the kind of characteristic that will hopefully make everything right for two people who absolutely want to be together regardless of what they have to go through to get there.

Emmaline—Emmy, was Ash’s daughter. Ash had a fucking daughter. Ash…

“Three, but my birthday is real soon.” Emmy had to me.

Ash had a three-nearly-four-year-old daughter.

Ash left me almost five years ago.

I’d stopped doing the math on it, stopped tracking how long it had been since she had left me. I did the math then, though. Four years, seven months. Emmy was nearly four, plus nine months of pregnancy.

Fuck.

No.

She wouldn’t.

I tore out of the kitchen and flew through the hallway where I’d found Emmy, past the stairs, and out to the back deck.

Indian had called Ash firefly since before I knew her. He used to say it was because her smiles weren’t constant given how introverted she was, but when one came out, it was like a light shining out of her.

He wasn’t exaggerating. Not one fucking bit.

For a moment, the image of her transfixed me. I wanted to break out my sketchpad and commit the sight to paper so I would never lose it. I wanted to ink it into my own skin so it would always be with me.

Then, I remembered Emmy.

The rage returned, burning underneath my skin. Storming across the yard, I clenched my hands at my sides. I couldn’t touch her. I couldn’t be responsible for what might happen if I did.

Just as I got close, Ash looked over her shoulder at me and jumped at the sight. Whether that was because I was not who she was expecting or my fury was clear on my face, I didn’t know. Didn’t really fucking care.

“Is she mine?” I demanded.

“What?”

My heart was beating triple time in my chest. The shock to my system at seeing Ash’s beautiful face again was almost enough to break through the cloud of anger, but not quite.

“Emmy,” I explained. “Is. She. Mine?”

Ash went pale. “How did you—”

“She was out in the hall. Woke up and needed a drink. Funny thing is, she says she’s about to turn four. It’s been just about nine months more than that since you left. So, I’ll ask one last time. Is she my fucking daughter?” I roared.

Ash shrunk back, and answered in a small voice, “I don’t know.”

She…what? “You don’t know?”

Her eyes fell to the ground. “I would have told you if I knew for sure.”

A ringing in my ears filled the silence in the yard. Emmy might not be mine. Ash didn’t know for sure who the father was. Ash…Ash slept with someone else. But the timeline…

She fucked someone else right after she left me.

I spent months—fuck, over a year—doing nothing but missing her, trying to find her. I didn’t touch another fucking woman until Ash had been gone for over eighteen months. But she…fuck.

How long did she even wait before letting some other guy in where only I had been?

A week? Two? Couldn’t have been that long if he might be Emmy’s father.

Fuck.

Ash still wasn’t looking at me and that was a really fucking good thing. I couldn’t see her face. Couldn’t see those eyes.

Without another fucking word, I left. I couldn’t be anywhere near her. I couldn’t handle the blow she just dealt.
