It felt like we were the only two people in the world, instead of inside a busy, posh restaurant.  

“This is beautiful.  But odd,” I said.

Graham took off his jacket and settled into his side of the table with one arm casually slung over the top of the booth.  “Fitting.”

“Are you saying I’m odd?”

“Are we going to fight about it if I say yes?”

“Probably.”

“Then, yes.”

My brow furrowed.  “You want to fight with me?”

Graham tugged at his tie, loosening it.  “I find it turns me on.”

I laughed.  “I think you need counseling.”

“After the last few days, I believe you may be right.”

The waitress returned with our drinks.  She set a highball glass down in front of him and a wine glass in front of me.

Graham had ordered Hendrick’s and tonic.  “That’s an old man’s drink, gin and tonic,” I said as I sipped my wine.

He swirled the ice around in his glass, then brought it to his lips and looked at me over the rim before drinking.  ”Remember what arguing with me does.  You might want to look under the table.”

My eyes widened.  “You aren’t.”

He smirked and cocked an eyebrow.  “Go ahead.  Put your head under.  I know you’re dying to take a peek anyway.”

After we both finished our drinks, and some of my nerves had started to calm, we finally had our first real conversation.  One that wasn’t about sex or tongue rings.  

“So how many hours do you work a day in that big fancy office of yours?”

“I usually go in by eight and try to leave by eight.”

“Twelve hours a day?  That’s sixty hours a week.”

“Not counting weekends.”

“You work weekends, too?”

“Saturdays.”

“So your only day off is Sunday?”

“I actually sometimes work in the evening on Sunday, too.”

“That’s nuts.  When do you find time to enjoy yourself?”

“I enjoy my work.”

I scoffed.  “Didn’t sound that way when I stopped in the other day.  Everyone there seems afraid of you, and you refused to open the door.”

“I was busy.”  He folded his arms over his chest.  

I did the same.  “So was I.  I took two trains to personally deliver that phone, you know.  And you didn’t have the decency to even come out and say thank you.”

“I didn’t know what was behind the door waiting for me, or I would have come out.”

“A person.  A person was behind the door.  One who went out of her way for you.  If I were a sixty-year-old married woman with blue hair, you should have come out to thank me.”

He sighed.  “I’m a busy man, Soraya.”

“Yet here you are on a weeknight at only 7PM.  Shouldn’t you be working until eight if you’re so busy?”

“I make exceptions when warranted.”

“How big of you.”

He arched an eyebrow.  “You want to look under the table, don’t you?”

“I want you so bad,” I mumble through the arousal rushing and flowing over every inch of my body, tingling up every nerve and swimming around inside me in overdrive.  “I’ve dreamed of this for so long,” I continue, my words coming out in a pant as I rock my hips.

“Ember,” he warns when I jerk my hips out of his unforgiving hold, giving us both the friction we’re in the need of when my wet and swollen lips slide against his erection.  “Stop,” he barks in a deep rumble, his neck straining as he takes my hips again between his hands.

I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the storyline from the synopsis of the book, but I’ve never been left wayward by Pepper Winters’ writing before, so I put myself in her extremely capable storytelling hands and allowed her to transport me to an island that is both paradise and purgatory, breathtaking and haunting.

Estelle and Galloway’s tale is an emotional journey of survival, both physically and mentally, and readers are privy to all of the highs and lows that are experienced in a place that gives just as easily as it takes and the only way to not be claimed by the darkness, by the depression, by the unanswered questions of fate, is to fight…is to endure…is to take away fate’s decisions and become a master at reading and understanding the messages and hopefully figuring out a way home.

Pepper Winters, once again, left me with overwhelming emotions at the end of Unseen Messages. There is so much to experience and revel in as Estelle and Galloway’s story unfolds, and Winters forces readers to live each unrelenting event with the characters because each scene is so vividly crafted and illustrated that there is no way to detach from it. Each action…each feeling is palpable so escaping unscathed is not an option. There were parts towards the end of the story where I was sobbing due to the mood and tone Winters infused into the situations she forced the characters to endure, which is exactly why her stories resonate with readers and leave them stripped bare emotionally in the best ways.

Hunter is a story of double crossing, lies, and manipulation – darkness and demons reign over all parts of the storyline, and it’s hard to tell who to trust and who’s willing to shoot you in the back. There’s a lot of history between the hunter and his prey that complicates not only Hunter’s mission but also the steps that need to be taken for Adriana to reclaim the empire that has always been hers.

Blaire Drake clearly illustrates Hunter’s tortured soul through his nightmares and fears. Being owned by a sadistic bastard and losing the one person who kept his heart alive turned Carlo into a cold-blooded killer. His demons run rampant and the only one who seems to quiet them is the one person he’s been told to kill. Hunter is a bit of a contradiction and the dual parts of his personality are showcased throughout the text as he makes decisions that both hurt and heal Adriana.

Adriana is definitely a strong heroine, and even though she hasn’t had many opportunities to prove her strength when she knows she no longer has a choice, but to reclaim her mother’s business by taking out her father, she shows exactly what she’s made of and why Mafioso Principessa is the perfect name to describe her.

While Adriana and Hunter’s relationship heats up throughout the text, the focus of the storyline is more on keeping Adriana alive and ending the reign of terror of her power hungry father. The suspense is written well, and it remains unclear who’s on whose side until all details are revealed, causing readers to be on edge as they work to figure out who Adriana can trust and if she’s going to make her father pay and her mother proud.
