Isabelle

Both of his hands settled around my face now and overwhelmed by his closeness and drunk on the emotions he’d resurrected in me, I closed the short space between us and pressed my lips gently into his. Caleb stilled for only a moment, no doubt startled by the fact that I was the one initiating this, but I was way past the point of no return now, and he recovered a heartbeat later, tightening his hold on my face, somehow pulling me even closer to him.

It started slow and tender as our mouths tentatively became reacquainted with each other and I couldn’t help the soft moan in the back of my throat just at tasting him again. It had been so long since I’d felt this, I’d honestly forgotten what his lips felt like…or maybe I’d just forced myself to forget. But there was no denying how good this felt, how at home I felt as his hands slid all the way around my waist.

Suddenly, I was moving in the air as he spun us around to press me back into the island. He gripped my hips to hoist me up onto the counter and my legs wrapped around his waist to help him sink in even deeper before I had a moment to recover.

His tongue pushed its way through my mouth and as his rough, familiar hands skimmed up the back of my shirt, just stopping at the edge of my bra. I shivered in his arms and wondered fleetingly if this was just all a dream. If I’d wake up any moment now, alone in my bed, and wondering what the hell just happened. But his lips were still moving over mine, tasting and taking everything I offered to him, eagerly giving it right back to me.

My hands wound their way around the back of his neck and gripped the top of his head as he ground my hips down against the hardness in his jeans. Just as I leaned my forehead against his to sigh into his lips, a loud cough jerked me out of the whirlwind I’d stumbled into it.

My hands dropped away from Caleb’s face and I turned just in time to see my dad shuffling toward the refrigerator. Caleb jolted and hustled out from between my legs to put some space between us. He ran a hand over his head as if to smooth the hair he didn’t really have there and my dad cast a wary glance over his shoulder at us.

“Don’t mind me,” he chuckled. “Just needed something to drink.”

“Sorry, Dad,” I murmured and bit down on my bottom lip as I slid off the counter.

My dad met my eyes briefly before turning his attention to Caleb. “Where are you planning on sleeping tonight?”

Caleb cleared his throat roughly. “The couch.”

“Good,” he nodded and shut the fridge door as he turned to us with a water bottle in his hand. “Probably best to take it slow, huh?”

I opened my mouth to protest, but for the life of me, I couldn’t find any words to say. My dad just waved goodnight and disappeared around the stairwell. When my eyes found Caleb again, he was staring slack-jawed after my dad and he shook his head.

“Wow.”

“Yeah,” I laughed. “That wasn’t embarrassing or anything.”

Instead of responding, he tucked his hands deep in his pockets and grinned at me.

“I should, um,” I swallowed hard, already backpedalling toward the same hallway my dad had just disappeared to. “I should get to bed. I’ll see you in the morning?”

“I’ll be here,” he nodded. “Sweet dreams, Iz.”

I waved awkwardly because there was no way in hell I was getting out of this gracefully and I scrambled up the stairs, practically running my dad over in the process, and didn’t stop until my old bedroom door was shut safely behind me.

“Is this seat taken?”

Ghost turned toward the low, husky voice that immediately made him think of sex. He’d been aware that she’d been walking toward him, as he was of everyone who moved around him. He was always on alert, ready to take whatever action might be needed. It was engrained in the very marrow of his bones.

A brunette stood next to him. Her hair was pulled back into a bun at the nape of her neck. There were wisps of hair hanging around her face, which had obviously fallen out of their confinement. She was fairly tall, especially in the heels she was wearing. Ghost guessed her to be around five-eight or so. She was pleasantly rounded in all the right places. Her Marilyn Monroe physique was a turn on, as was the bright smile she was aiming his way.

Her accent gave away the fact she was American. She was wearing a navy blue skirt and shirt, and was pulling a blue suitcase and a small matching bag behind her. Obviously an employee of the airline, a flight attendant, she greeted him warmly.

Ghost shook his head and gestured toward the seat, inviting the woman to sit next to him.

“Thanks.”

The woman sat down, opened the small blue bag, and fished out her cell phone. She turned to him and asked, “Going somewhere fun?”

Ghost wasn’t sure he really wanted to get into a chat, but he was bored, and he might as well pass the time. He’d never been one to reject an opportunity to talk and flirt with a pretty woman. “Home.”

His one-word answer didn’t seem to daunt the flight attendant. “Ah, American. Where’s home?”

“Texas.”

“Really? Me too! How funny that we’re going to the same place. Out of all the people I could’ve sat next to, I picked someone who was going to be on my flight.” She laughed. “You are on flight eight twenty-three, right?”

Ghost nodded.

“Cool. But my place in Texas is really more of a place to store my stuff than a home, since I’m usually working. I currently have the European shift. I’m gone more than I’m home.”

Ghost smiled inside. The woman was very pretty and her bubbly personality was pleasant. “Yeah, I travel a lot too, so I know what you mean.”

She beamed. “Ah, I didn’t really peg you as a businessman, but I guess looks can be deceiving, huh?”

“What did you peg me as?”

The woman tilted her head, contemplating his question. Her lips pursed and then she bit her bottom one. Amazingly, Ghost felt himself getting excited.

Jesus, was he that hard up for a woman? He tried to think about when he’d last had the pleasure of a woman’s company in his bed, and was amazed to realize he wasn’t sure. The team had been busy lately with ISIS ramping up their efforts to cause panic around the world, they hadn’t had a lot of time to themselves back home. But it was more that he was tired of all the tag chasers in Texas…women who only wanted to sleep with military men to say they’d done it. Military men were accused of being sex-crazed, but the reality was, around military bases, there were plenty of women who saw marrying a military man as a way out of their destitute existences. Not only that, but some were obsessed with sleeping with as many soldiers as possible.

“Bounty hunter,” she said resolutely.

Torn out of his internal thoughts of when he’d last had sex, Ghost chuckled out loud in surprise at her deduction. “Bounty hunter? Really?”

“Uh-huh.”

When she didn’t elaborate, Ghost crossed his arms over his chest and smiled at her. “Why?”

“Let’s see…”

Connor Dunkle stood on her doorstep.
With a rush of relief, she flung open the door and held back a gasp.
My God, he looked good.
Struck mute for a moment, she gave in to impulse and hungrily took him in. Dressed in a button down navy blue shirt that clung to his broad chest, a casual jacket, and dark-washed jeans, he simmered with delicious masculine testosterone. Usually a hint of stubble clung to his square jaw, but tonight he was clean-shaven and smelled of spicy cloves. His thick dirty blond hair fell in waves over his forehead, brushing his ears, and those sea blue eyes framed with thick lashes struck her mute for a few seconds. He towered over her in a mass of rock-hard muscle, giving her the impression of both strength and protectiveness.
He was a walking, talking specimen of everything a woman dreams of in a man. Both Hemsworth brothers mixed with Daniel Craig and a sprinkle of old-fashioned Redford. Her poor body roared into overdrive and she felt a damp rush of moisture between her thighs.
God, she was acting like a sex-starved teen. So. Embarrassing.
Finally, he spoke. Even his damn voice was gravel and satin mixed together in a symphony to the ears. “I saw your lights went out. Looks like some of the other houses on the block are affected. You okay?”
He was checking on her? To be nice or to get her to agree to extra credit? “Yes, we’re fine. Thank you.”
“Did you flip the breaker? Sometimes these apartments get overloaded and you need to reset it. That’s what I had to do with mine.”
“I haven’t gone down to the basement yet.”
“I’ll help you out.”
“Oh, you don’t have to.”
His gaze sharpened on her face, and his jaw clenched. Fascinated, she studied his features, noticing the air of irritation that briefly shone. “I want to, Ella. I won’t stay. I just don’t like the idea of you and Luke alone in the dark.”
She flushed and stumbled back. “I didn’t mean to be rude. I’m just used to doing things for myself. I’m sorry, come in.”
He walked inside and she realized it was a mistake.

Review

I love the fact that Kendall Ryan doesn’t stick with typical story lines…that she’s willing to take risks and go beyond the normal boy meets girl set-up, and while, I’ll admit, I have a hard time with love triangles…Nolan’s relationship with the two women in his life is very unconventional…true feelings aren’t necessarily a factor in both; there’s more of a kinship with one and an undeniable connection with the other that has the potential to go further if Nolan was willing to take a risk instead of staying in his comfortable, love free bubble.

Nolan Maxwell is a former Navy SEAL whose life was controlled and on the line for his entire career. Now, he lives his life for himself – taking what he wants when he wants it and not wanting anything serious because he’s too damaged for more. He doesn’t want to be anyone’s hero; he just wants to have fun and forget about his past, living solely in the present any way he wants to without allowing emotions into it. His decisions are led by his dick instead of his brain, but the instant he meets Lacey, her innocence and light calls to him in a way that he never thought he would want and now he’s torn by the easy life he’s been living and the risky one that involves feelings and more than just release.

Lacey clearly has an agenda when it comes to Nolan and her reasons for befriending him. But her back story remains vague for much of the story, forcing readers to form their own opinions about what Lacey’s running from and how Nolan factors into her plans. As upfront as Nolan is with Lacey about his situation, the only information she tells him about her past is that she’s running from something, but since the beginning, every move that Lacey has made to get close to Nolan has been calculated and deliberate in order to protect herself from what she fled from, but the one act that wasn’t thought out was developing feelings for the man she’s been lying to from the start, which has its own set of repercussions because the truth always has a way of coming out.

Bait & Switch is an interesting title for Nolan and Lacey’s story because both of them seem to feel baited by the other to redefine what they want and need from one another. When things get complicated between them and a switch needs to occur, it’s unclear how to accomplish that because Nolan feels in his gut that Lacey’s hiding something, and he’s still unsure about changing the dynamics of his life, and Lacey knows that once the truth is revealed, Nolan’s feelings for her will definitely switch off and force her to make a new life once again without the person she wants by her side.
