“He has a thing for you.”

“Nope.” She shakes her head vigorously and puckers her lips. “He wants you.”

“What’s an infrared fat wrap?” I wondered, out loud.

Honey, Personal Assistant, sighed theatrically, then winked. “Watch and learn, grasshopper.”

“Yes, Honey Scholes calling on behalf of my client Miles Stephens. No, you will not put me on hold—I want to speak to Wendy immediately about the Dazzled premiere, so you will not make me look an asshole, got that?”

She was put through instantly.

Damn.

After a quick word of explanation to Wendy, she passed me the phone.

“Yeah, hi Wendy. I need an evening dress for the premiere, well, not for me, for a friend. You met her that first time … I … um…”

Don’t remind her of that, you dick!

“Ah, the young lady who was with you? The British girl?”

“Yeah, yeah, my friend Clare.”

“And what size is your friend?”

“Fu … I mean, I’m not really sure … uh, a British size 14 I’d guess. I don’t know what that is in American…” I glanced desperately at Honey.

“Ten to 12,” she whispered.

“Yeah, um, ten to 12.”

“I see. Yes, well, it’s rather short notice for such an unusually large sizing, but I’m sure Miss Da Silva can accommodate your request. There’s an Alexander McQueen that might do?”

“Yeah, whatever you think. Just not yellow—she’ll look like Big Bird.”

Oh, shit! I’d spoken without connecting my mouth to my brain. Thankfully, Wendy just coughed to cover up her laughter.

“Of course, Mr. Stephens. Not yellow.”

“Great, thanks. Um, do I need to come and pick it up or…?”

Honey rolled her eyes at me.

“No, Mr. Stephens,” Wendy answered, patiently. “We’ll send it with a couple of alternatives. Do you need one of our dressers, too? If you could let me know the name of your friend’s hotel?”

“No, I mean, she’s staying at my place. I can help her dress. I mean, um…”

There was a long pause and I cringed, realizing how that sounded. But Wendy was too professional to comment.

When we finished, I handed the phone back to Honey and dropped my head into my hands.

“I really suck at this.”

She patted my shoulder sympathetically.

“It gets easier, Miles, but this brand of crazy isn’t for everyone.”

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to write. Perhaps it was growing up in a village well known for its mystery and folklore, which sparked my imagination as a child.

I enjoy writing in several different genres, and I’ve just published my first romcom, ‘Dazzled’.

All my books have a little me in them, and I’m inspired by the personal stories of those around me. It’s often from a simple discussion overheard in the train (‘Exposure’), in a café, or in the street, where ideas for characters or scenes come to me.

I fell in love with both Sam (‘The New Samurai’) and the eponymous Sebastian in ‘The Education of Sebastian’ and the sequel ‘The Education of Caroline’, and missed them desperately once I’d finished their stories. I love writing dialogue and always try to include touches of humour in the most poignant stories.

Review

Hallowed Ground is a breathtakingly emotional and poignant read that illustrates the profound effect of the casualties of war – on both sides – those who live it and those who experience it through their loved ones who are injured or killed. What makes this book as well as the series as a whole so soul bearing is the fact that Rebecca Yarros, her husband, and her family live the solider’s life, so the transparency that exists in the words…in the mental anguish…in the depiction of what Josh and Ember experience throughout the course of their story has an even bigger effect on the reader as I’m sure it did on Yarros as she wrote it.

It’s hard to put into words the emotions that Hallowed Ground pulled from me as I read it, especially with how it began. Because readers are given both Josh and Ember’s perspectives as they struggle with their lives during Josh’s deployment, it forces us to understand both sides regardless of how our personal feelings are swayed by witnessing their individual suffering and anguish. Intellectually, duty and honor are traits that we want all soldiers to have, but emotionally, the risks, the what ifs, and the broken promises prevent reason from dominating, lending way to emotional reactions that could force Josh and Ember to lose more than they ever thought possible.

It was supposed to be Josh and Ember against the world because after fighting to stay together despite having a long distance relationship for the past two years, it was finally their chance to be in the same location, starting their life side by side. But when duty calls, Josh must answer and despite Ember’s fears, she can’t force him to stay home because then he wouldn’t be the man she fell in love with even though she doesn’t want to lose another man she loves.

Ember and Josh’s story will consume readers and the fact that the author has first hand experience adds so much more to the story because I feel Yarros’ emotions through Ember’s reactions…I feel her worry and her fears. I feel everything that Yarros wants readers to feel because it’s so vividly described, and to also have Josh’s perspective allows the full view to be presented because I don’t think it would have been fair to only have one side of it because there’s two people involved who love each other so deeply but also have their own careers that mean so much to them. I love how Yarros illustrates all sides to the story – the intellectual and the emotional. Ember and Josh’s situation is not one of right or wrong…it’s so much deeper than that…so much more personal and that idea is expressed so well in Hallowed Ground.

On a side note, I’m a high school AP English teacher and the Gettysburg Address is one of my favorites to teach because it seems so simplistic due to its length, but it is so rhetorically powerful due to its message, and Yarros alludes to the speech at the best possible place in the story, and it helps Josh to move forward…to understand that while there’s definitely a debt to be paid to those who died, it doesn’t mean those who are living have to stop…it doesn’t mean that paying the fallen back requires giving up everything else because the guilt cannot be laid to rest so easily – it just means fighting past the pain, working through the hurt, and taking every measure to make one’s life count because that’s the best possible way to give back to those who laid down their lives so that he could live.

Hallowed Ground is an amazing conclusion to an emotionally driven series that forces readers to realize the full measures that soldiers and their families go through in order to protect and serve and that the biggest fight for glory that they have is making their family’s proud and coming home safely.

I pulled her onto my lap, gently squeezing the sweet curves of her hips.

“Behave,” she whispered into my ear, but ran her tongue along the edge.

My fingers flexed, teasing under the edges of the black skirt that had slid higher on her thighs as she sat. I couldn’t help it—her skin was a magnet for my hands. “You like it better when I don’t,” I answered.

She locked those blue eyes on mine, and for that second, I wanted everyone to go the fuck away so I could get my remarkable girlfriend out of her clothes. Not a girlfriend for long. Not if I found the perfect moment for that little velvet box hidden upstairs.

Mrs. Walker. December-fucking-Walker. Sounded perfect to me.

“Earth to Josh and Ember,” Jagger called, waving his hand like he’d been at it a while.

“Yeah, yeah, a toast,” Ember said, wiggling against my now-hard lap. I locked her down with my hands, and she threw me a smug grin, well aware of what she’d done.

Jagger raised his beer. “To friends. Hell, that doesn’t even cut it. You guys, all of you…I wouldn’t be here”—he looked over to Paisley—“or even the man I am, without you. So more than friends…to family.”

We glanced around the fire at the family we’d made, and I felt it—one of those moments you can’t forget, the kind that stay with you when it’s long past, so you try to memorize everything. It was a deep peace, a contentment laced with the silent knowledge that we wouldn’t be together again for far too long.
“To family,” we all said in scattered rhythm, and I kissed the underside of Ember’s jaw.

I absolutely love Kye Burke; he is definitely not who everyone has made him out to be, which is exactly why Chelsey tries her damnest to stay away from him because he blows her perceived notions about rock stars out of the water. She feels like she needs to hold on to her own truths like they’re chained to her because she’s afraid to give her heart to someone else and watch it be destroyed because she believes rock stars are only ONE way.

Dirty Past ~

For Chelsey, her childhood has left her guarded and with deep rooted scars that force her to protect her heart with a bitchy attitude and a hot/cold demeanor. Chelsey’s father’s past antics as a rockstar has tainted her outlook on any musician and regardless of how much her body craves Kye, the only thing she sates is her body and even that comes with a multitude of repercussions for both of them.

Dirty Secret ~

Chelsey’s true secret is her out of control feelings for Kye. Everything about him works for her, but she won’t admit it…she refuses to back down from her initial thoughts no matter how much dirty talking or gentlemanly actions Kye does.

Dirty Lies ~

The media plays a huge role in keeping Chelsey’s heart from truly opening up to Kye. The paparazzi work their magic and spin their tales, picking apart every move that Chelsey and Kye make further humiliating her in ways that she can’t seem to recover from because the spotlight is not a place she wants to be in for anyone.

Dirty Tricks ~

Kye definitely has his work cut out for him with Chelsey, but just like the title suggests, Kye’s not opposed to doing a bit of conniving and deception to get what he’s always wanted – HER.

Readers need to heed Emma Hart’s words and give Chelsey a chance, regardless of how much we might want to strangle her and force her to face her fears and get past the demons of what she witnessed with her father. Intellectually, I completely understand why she is the way she is with Kye, but my heart couldn’t take much more of her mixed signals and running. I’m sure it’s because I knew Kye wouldn’t be like his manwhore twin and witnessing everything he’s done in the book to prove to Chelsey that he’s nothing like her father, I had a hard time looking past some of her actions. BUT, Emma told me to stick with Chelsey, and so I did, and I’m so glad that I did because Chelsey definitely redeems herself, and Emma does a fantastic job of illustrating Chelsey’s inner torment and the truth of her feelings despite her outward protests.

All the Burke brothers and their significant others are back in the final book of the series, which is a great send off for them and readers. The brothers have a lot of decisions to make with where their career and lives go from here, and it’s not that easy of a decision due to a multitude of factors, namely the women who own their hearts.

In true Emma Hart fashion, Kye and Chelsey, just like the other couples, struggle to stay in the present and focus on what’s between them regardless of what’s happening around them. But, the Burke boys are relentless when they want something and when they love, they love with every part of their bodies and souls, so while Kye may have to trick Chelsey into spending time with him, he’s playing the long game because despite Chelsey Young’s external facade, she wants exactly what Kye wants to give her – HIMSELF!
