Review

I still remember how emotionally drained I was when I finished Left Drowning. It was one of my favorite reads of 2013, and I had high hopes that Jessica Park would continue the McGuire and Shepherds’ story, providing further insight into the close knit siblings and the people they love. Sabin was my favorite character in the text, and I wanted to know what happened to him as he worked through his drinking problem and fought against the darkness of his past that constantly threatened to swallow him whole. I also needed to witness Blythe and Chris’ relationship grow and solidify. They fought through so much, both individually and as a couple, in Left Drowning, and for that reason, I wanted them to find some peace with each other. But I also understand that life can throw curveballs and force people to confront underlying feelings and deal with a past that’s just too hard to completely escape from, and so I knew I was in for another emotional rollercoaster in Restless Waters because even though bad thoughts and feelings will no longer take any of the McGuires or Shepherds under, that mindset will definitely make them edgy and cause rough patches to rise up when they least expect it.

So much changes for the McGuires and Shepherds as they focus on their futures, and for the most part, the life adjustments are positive, but Sabin’s at a bit of a crossroads, and he’s drowning in feelings…in guilt…in regret, but instead of confronting those issues, he pushes them down and refuses to acknowledge just how messed up he feels, causing three relationships to be put in turmoil with an unclear perspective of how they can remain intact due to bitter and complex feelings.

It’s amazing to me how well Jessica Park captures Sabin’s character without providing his own perspective. Through Blythe’s intense friendship with Sabin, readers are able to see just how unsteady and tormented he is because Blythe feels their disconnect; she feels Sabin’s turmoil because they are a single unit, and it’s overwhelming, frustrating, and terrifying to witness his breakdown through Blythe’s eyes because she’s helpless to understand and fix what’s wrong with him.

The restless journey that readers experience in Restless Waters is extremely tumultuous and heartbreaking, but it’s also enlightening. Chris is steadfast in his love for his siblings and Blythe and he demonstrates just how strong of a man he is when both Blythe and Sabin need him to bring them back to themselves and to him. Chris refuses to let either of them drown, and he proves that by his words and his actions. Chris becomes their champion, and for readers, he becomes the beckon of light who will always guide and protect the characters that we have grown to love and cherish just as much as he does.

I absolutely loved listening to the audio version of Restless Water narrated by Arielle DeListe with music by Troy. I’ve never listened to a text that incorporates a singer amidst the words, and I have to say that the music added so much to the book. Sabin speaks through his lyrics and music; it’s his one safe place – one where he can expose himself and not feel completely stripped bare and that’s exactly what Troy’s music allows to shine through and it fits extremely well into the entire concept of the text and the characters.

Arielle DeListe’s narration is absolutely amazing. She brought Blythe’s every emotion to life in exactly the right way, and her adjustment in tone and inflection truly showcased the rollercoaster of emotions that Blythe experiences throughout the events of the text.

Hopefully, there’s more McGuire and Shepherds’ stories to come because they are definitely a family I would love to keep in touch with and see what’s happening in their lives.

Gah! I am so excited for the release of the Restless Waters audiobook! It’s always exciting when a book I’ve written comes to life in a new form, but this project snowballed into something more beautiful than I could have imagined. I wasn’t sure I was even going to do an audiobook, but then I reconnected with my fabulous Left Drowning narrator, Arielle DeLisle. Once she was on board, my enthusiasm for creating this version of my book soared. She understands my characters as well as I do, and she’s the only person in the world I would entrust to deliver their voices.

So, as thrilled as I was to have her attached to this project, there was one idea I had to present, and I wasn’t sure how it would go over with her…

Restless Waters includes lyrics from my friend and phenomenally talented musician, Troy. Beyond that, he actually wrote a song for me! Er, well, for the book. “Coward” is the powerful single he created, and everything about it reaches into my heart. More music from the book is available on his recently released EP, When The Lights Came, and he’ll also be releasing more music from the book soon!

So, I couldn’t imagine having these lyrics narrated… I mean, it’s one thing to read the lyrics in the context of the book, because it’s sort of the equivalent of poetry, but I felt sure something would really be lost if they were read aloud. More than that, we had an opportunity to do something incredibly unique and dynamic.

Because Arielle is a sassy rule breaker and a rebel, like I am, she agreed: We would ask Troy to record acoustic versions of his music to incorporate into the audiobook.

And then Troy agreed.

And then suddenly the three of us were working together seamlessly on this production! An indie trifecta, each of us bringing something different to this work, and all of us supporting and cheering on the other. It was an extraordinary experience.

Troy and I have been trying to work together for years (his former band, In Like Lions, is mentioned in Flat-Out Love!), and we finally got our chance. Troy is, without a doubt, the voice of Sabin. Nobody sings with Troy’s level of passion, emotion, depth, soul, and beauty. It was an honor to use his lyrics in the text of the book, but hearing his voice as Sabin’s in the audiobook is phenomenally moving, and I am so grateful for all the work he put in. Troy also narrates the chapter titles and opening lyrics, and I think it’s just perfect having him as Sabin doing those introductory pieces.

As far as the three of us know, an audiobook that incorporates music as the Restless Waters one does hasn’t been done before, so that’s another thrill for us! Listeners not only get to savor Arielle’s perfect narration (Man, does she capture these characters and all the ups and downs of the story!), but they get to hear what it would be like to be right there with Sabin as he sings and plays guitar.

We are so proud of this audiobook and terribly excited for fans of the Left Drowning series to take a listen!

Restless Waters was a project I held very close to my heart. The timing of how it came together for me — as a narrator and collaborator and fan of the prequel I’d recorded 2 years ago — was truly a beautiful experience for me. It’s one of my favorite projects I’ve worked on, ever. To say this was an intense recording experience would be an understatement! Not only was this thick with emotion and depth, which required a lot from me as a narrator, a challenge I absolutely loved, but it also is an exceptionally unique multimedia audiobook. I could not imagine a better suited team, all of us with our own personal connections to the work, and all driven toward the end-product being as great as we could make it. 

Working with Troy and his producer, Dante, to get just the right feel and timing to allow the story to unfold around and on top of the music was a beautiful enhancement to this already moving story. I have a background in commercial production and was able to facilitate this collaboration, and Jessica and I were on the same page — if we break the rules of how audiobooks are produced, it has to have meaning and it has to be perfect. The script informs the narration, introducing the music adds dimension to the tone, and the blend of narration and music work together to create an atmosphere that you just don’t get when it’s only one piece or the other. I love what we’ve done and couldn’t be happier with how it all came together.

I didn’t think there would ever be another Jay Crownover alpha hero who would be able to usurp Rule’s number one position as my favorite book boyfriend, but Zeb Fuller has done exactly that…everything about Zeb is honest and real. He speaks from the heart, and he loves with every piece of himself, which is a massive amount since he’s a giant! He owns his past, and he’s done everything in his power to leave his mistakes behind him, but he never hides what shaped him and what he learned from his time in prison. He’s an amazing man and an incredible builder, and it’s a darn good thing that Zeb knows how to strip everything down to its core and build it back up, completely new and stronger, because that’s exactly what he needs to do with Sayer Cole, and it’s going to be the hardest rebuild of his life, but also the most worthwhile because the payback will last a lifetime.

Sayer is a complex woman, and I’m sure she’s going to rub some readers the wrong way because of her hot/cold demeanor when it comes to her reaction and feelings towards Zeb. Her life, pre Denver, was all about trying to achieve “unreachable standards,” resulting in constant disapproval and contempt. Sayer worked hard to shut down her emotions growing up, not allowing anything to penetrate the shell around herself because if she allowed that to happen, she would never recover. Leading with her head and always being in control is how Sayer survived; it’s how she coped with her father. But it’s also why Sayer finds passion and overwhelming emotions so dangerous…why she’d rather be frigid and unreachable because anything else is too much for her to handle, which means that Zeb Fuller in all is mountain man goodness is about as threatening as any man could be to Sayer’s perfectly constructed and emotionless world.

There are a lot of ups and downs when it comes to Zeb and Sayer making a go at a relationship. Sayer is extremely guarded and Zeb does things to her that she’s never let herself feel before, so Sayer tries to toe the line of a lawyer/client…restorer/client relationship while Zeb wants to bulldoze that same line and prove to Sayer exactly how good it could be between them if she allowed her feelings for Zeb to direct her life choices.

Zeb’s one guiding principle throughout the entire story is being patient. He seems to personify that term as he works to rebuild his life after prison and construct a new, fuller one even after life throws him even more curves.

Zeb is as steady as a man can be and that’s why I love everything about him and everything about this book! He may be a tattooed, blue-collar, ex-con, but he’s also a vibrant, expressive, and passionate man who is willing to give everything that he has and is in order to have the life he wants, and what woman wouldn’t want to be a part of that!

As though my intense and swirling thoughts had pulled Zeb into the vortex of self-pity I was struggling in, my phone vibrated in my hand with a message from him as I wandered aimlessly through the empty rooms.

I shivered at the sight of his name and then silently scolded myself for having such a powerful reaction to only his name on the screen. His message was simple but for some reason it felt full of more meaning and emotion than the three words staring up at me indicated.

Can you talk?

I bit my lip and decided how to answer. I didn’t talk to my clients after office hours were done for the day and I was already having a really hard time keeping the professional and personal lines clear where he and this case were concerned. I sighed and tapped out:

I can. Do you want me to call you?

I had started this process as his friend first and it wasn’t fair to him that my heart was pulling itself apart because of his situation. He was probably nervous and scared about what was coming next week, and I was the only one who could put some of that at ease.

There wasn’t a response for a long couple of minutes and I hated that all I could do was stare at my phone and pace back and forth while I waited to see what he was going to say. I was acting like a teenager and it was ridiculous. I snorted at myself and was headed into the kitchen to pour myself a glass of wine when the phone rang and made me jump. I wasn’t prepared for him to call me right that moment and had a bout of anxiety about answering the call before I told myself to man up and swiped my finger across the screen.

“Hey. Everything all right?” I heard a car honk its horn wherever he was calling from, and he mumbled something that wasn’t directed at me before answering.

“Fuck no.”

“Just wanted to check and make sure you and Rylee were okay.” Thank fuck he finally speaks, pulling me from the temptation to drown my problems away. I swivel so my back faces the kitchen—and the bottle—while I wait for him to say more, ask the questions I know are on his tongue. Yet I’m met with silence. Rolling my shoulders, I blow out a breath as I try to let in the one person who matters most when all I want to do is shut people out right now.

“I’m worried about her,” I confess as I look out the window. She’s still curled up on the chaise lounge where she’s been since Haddie left. The food next to her untouched. It’s fucking killing me to not go out there and talk to her, but I’m the reason she’s hurting.

I’m not going to let her pull away. Don’t think she will. But she asked for space, and I’m giving it to her. For now.

“It takes a lot to catch me off guard, Dad,” I say finally as my mind runs faster than I can say the thoughts, “and this . . . fuck . . . this just blindsided us.”

“I don’t want an explanation, son. I’ve lived this life too long to know how people twist and manipulate things to hurt others. I’m just calling to let you know we’re behind you. I’m here if you need to talk and to make sure you take care of her.”

“She told me she trusted me to handle this, and now? Now, I don’t even know what the fuck to say to her.”

“How about you start by using her name.”

My knee-jerk reaction is to yell at him for the comment, but it dies on my lips when I click another link with the mouse and comments fill the screen.

I’m sure my dad can hear the sound of my fist hitting the desk through the connection and yet he says nothing. The drywall calls to me. It’s so much more tempting to hit—satisfying—because the destruction is there, visible, and yet helps fucking nothing.

“Her name? Easier said than done, Dad. I brought her into my public world, pushed her, and now this is what she gets for loving me?”

“I bet she gets a whole lot more than that, Colton, or she wouldn’t be with you.” His words hang on the connection as I struggle whether or not to believe him. Is the more worth enough for her to stick with me through all of this?

His words repeat in my head.

I sure as fuck hope he’s right. Everything’s been too perfect as of late. Is this the other shoe dropping to put me back in my place and remind me how cruel fate can be?

“Remember, son, marriage isn’t about how madly in love you are through the good times, but how committed you are to each other in the bad times.”

And as cheesy as my dad’s advice sounds, I hear it. Hold on to it. And hope to fucking God it’s the truth because the shit has most definitely hit the fan.

“She won’t even speak to me.” I chuckle in frustration and force myself to turn off the computer. If I see one more image I have a feeling the drywall will be too tempting to resist. Unclench your fists, Donavan. Shove down the urge to hit something.

“I probably wouldn’t want to speak to you right now either,” he says.
