Anna’s so-called friends undermine and backstab, but James is up for the challenge…

James is determined to make Anna see that while she might have once been an ugly duckling, she is now a stunning swan, and the only woman for him.

Caught up in a whirlwind of press coverage, and championship competition…

James and Anna find the stress almost overwhelming, and they struggle to maintain focus on their goals. But when victory finally appears certain, an old menace resurfaces and threatens to violate all James and Anna hold dear.

Is it possible to have a perfect life?

A perfect love?

Or is perfection just an illusion…

Excerpt

“When he comes over please don’t say anything stupid or act funny around him. Please. I’m begging you. He’s just a normal guy like you and me,” Anna pleaded, wide eyed.

At the mention of the ‘normal guy,’ Anna couldn’t help but notice the wide, suspicious eyes staring back at her. It was obvious that her comments had had the exact opposite effect than the one she’d been after. Instead of acting natural and normal, now Anna was worried what would fall out of their mouths. And what confused her more was why. After all, they’d all known each other for years, but now and all of a sudden Anna didn’t trust them. Not as far as she could throw them.

But in the same moment the thought crossed her mind, James edged his way around the bar toward them. Daniel was first to see and recognise him. Anna watched on, horrified, as his mouth fell open, his eyes firmly fixed on James’s approaching figure. And slowly but surely, one by one, everyone else’s gaze followed.

Anna hated her home town in that moment. And she knew James would have as well. This was why they never went anywhere or did anything. The whole bar was watching him. Every move he made was scrutinized, and as he passed by tables, Anna was disgusted to notice conversations fell short. People stopped pushing buttons on the poker machines, and even the bar attendants froze mid-pour as the entire club fell silent. But to James’s credit and Anna’s delight, he continued to walk purposefully across the room, his head held high, and took his seat next to Anna, offering her a glass of mineral water and a reassuring smile as she made introductions.

Anna had never felt so many pairs of eyes on them at once. She felt them boring into her soul. So she did something she never would have done if she had been thinking straight. It was Anna’s greatest weaknesses; she was rash and impulsive. And when provoked, she tended to react first and think later. So she kissed James. In the middle of the crowded room, with hundreds of eyes fixated on them, she kissed him. It worked, luckily. Shocked people returned to what they were doing, leaving Anna’s cheeks burning. She could hear their names being whispered amongst patrons, but at least the staring and deafening silence was over. She heard rumours beginning to take shape, about how she—a nobody—had just kissed the superstar swimmer.

Chapter One

The first thing Bethany Green saw when she opened her mailbox on Friday evening was the indigo-colored envelope. Against the rest of the junkmail and bills, it stood out like an exotic jewel in the dust.

Even as she cautioned herself against excitement, her heart skipped several beats. Fingers trembling, she reached for the rectangular envelope and felt it, real and heavy in her hand.

“Omigod, it came. It actually came.” Realizing she was talking to herself, albeit in the empty foyer of her apartment building, she quickly stuffed the mail in her oversized handbag and hurried to the elevator.

She’d barely stabbed the button for the fourth floor when she pulled the envelope out again. The words written on the front in raised gold embossed lettering were simple—Your Invitation. She turned it over. No return address. No surprise there. Because, seriously, only a crazy person would turn down this invitation.

Ten minutes later, Bethany, despite being fortified with half a glass of Rioja, still hadn’t gathered the courage to open it. The harsh buzz of her cellphone made her jump. Unable to tear her gaze from the envelope, which now rested on her coffee table, she fumbled on the sofa for a few seconds before her fingers closed over her phone.

“We still on for tapas in an hour, right?” Keely Benson, her best friend, snapped in her no-nonsense Brooklyn twang.

Keely was pure New Yorker, not an up-stater like Bethany. Many times during their long friendship, Bethany had thanked God for having Keely in her life. She’d been there for her when Bethany had been hit with the worst news of her life.

“Umm…yeah…I guess,” Bethany replied, her attention still absorbed by the envelope.

“You…guess? How many times over the last week have I told you how important tonight is to me? Fuck, Bethany, if you chicken out on me, I’ll never forgive you. You know Clark will never go all the way if I come on too strong. I need you to pull me back. Once I get him to my place, I’ll be fine, but I can’t have him wimping out on me at dinner, and for that to happen, I need you there!”

“Jesus, Keel, I’ve never understood your insane addiction to nerds.”

Her friend gave a rich laugh that started off as a schoolgirl giggle and ended in a dominatrix’s growl. Bethany had seen grown men drool like little boys when Keely laughed.

“You don’t need to understand, baby girl. All you need to do is to turn up and help a friend out.”

“I…okay, sure, I’ll be there.”

Keely huffed with impatience. “Ok, tell me what’s going on. You haven’t had another run-in with She-male, have you?”

Bethany smirked at the nickname they’d coined for her balls-shriveling boss. “No, she’s out of town till Tuesday.”

“Then what the hell’s the problem?”

“It came,” Bethany blurted out, incapable of keeping the news to herself any longer.

“It? What it?”

“An invitation. To The Indigo Lounge.”

Silence. For as long as Bethany had known her, Keely had never been at a loss for words. For her to be silent now made Beth’s heart hammer. Her friend knew, just as she did, the gravity of the moment.

“You’re. Shitting. Me!” she finally whispered.

“I am not.” A sound bubbled up from Bethany’s throat—half incredulous, half terrified. Because she still couldn’t believe what her eyes were telling her.

“Have you opened it? What does it say? When do you leave? How long for? Are you allowed to bring a guest? Fuck it, girl, spill!”

“I…haven’t opened it yet. And, seriously, Keely, I don’t think I want to.”

“You don’t think you want to open it or you don’t think you want to accept the invitation?”

“Umm…both? I mean there’s no way I can get away on such short notice. Besides, I have too much work to do at the moment. June is our busiest month because it’s right before everyone disappears for the summer…it’s just not practical—”

“Bethany!” Keely’s steely voice cut across hers.

“Yes?”

“How much wine do you have at your place?”

Bethany finally managed to blink and focus on something other than the indigo envelope. Glancing over at the alcove set into the short hallway leading to her kitchen, she counted. “Three reds, one white, one rosé. Why?”

“I’ll be over in twenty minutes. I’ll bring take out.”

“What about Clark?”

Keely sighed. “As much as it kills me to deny myself some super-hot nerd cock, Clark can wait. This is way too important to let you do what I know you’re thinking about doing.”

“But—”

“Twenty minutes.” She hung up.

Bethany forced herself to breathe. Willed her hands to stop shaking. Taking another sip of wine, she picked up the invitation.

The Indigo Lounge—owned by thirty-one-year-old billionaire Zachary Savage, the fifth-richest man in America.

The piece she’d read about Savage in Time Magazine last year had expounded on his Midas-touch business savvy and hinted at his rags-to-riches background, but she’d known the report was largely rehashed from other articles. The very private Zach Savage had revealed almost nothing about his past to his interviewer.

The picture used in the piece had been an old one from his college years, but it didn’t detract from the fact that at twenty-five, Zachary Savage had been magnetic and gorgeous, with eyes that captured and held a woman’s attention and made her want to get to know the man behind the enigmatic, sexy smile.

Nowadays, all anyone knew about Zachary Savage was that he lived somewhere on the West Coast, probably San Francisco, owned several homes around the world, and had fingers in multiple entrepreneurial pies, the most renowned being The Indigo Lounge.

Operating from ten super-jumbo private jets, the lounges offered prime, private adult entertainment. Rumors said they were flying sex palaces, but the specifics were an extremely well-kept secret that only the cream of A-listers were familiar with.

The events organizing company she worked for had made overtures for his business last year and been met with a flat refusal. Bethany, as part of the bidding team, had been tasked beforehand with finding out everything she could about Zachary Savage.

Coming up near-empty had more than pissed off her bosses and made her position at Neon Events, Inc. precarious. She’d had to work her ass off after that debacle to redeem herself in the eyes of her immediate supervisor, Sheena Malcolm.

The sound of her buzzer interrupted her thoughts. Springing to her feet, she buzzed Keely in and waited by her front door.

Her blonde, green-eyed friend exited the elevator with her usual brisk, sexy stride, carrying a takeout bag from their favorite Chinese place in one hand and two Louis Vuitton weekenders in another.

Bethany frowned as Keely walked past her into the apartment. “What are the bags for?”

Keely dumped the luggage on the floor next to the nearest sofa and headed for the kitchen. “One is empty and is for you to use once I convince you you’re going on this trip. The other is for if I’ve lost all my powers of persuasion and I don’t succeed. In which case, you and I are taking off for the Hamptons for the weekend. The weather forecast says mid to high nineties. If I won’t be sweating it out on my sheets with Clark, I might as well go sweat on a beach and top up my tan while we discuss the serious issue of how you live your life.” She grabbed two plates and came back into the living room where she’d left the food on the small dining table tucked into a corner, and started dishing out Kung Pao chicken and noodles.

Bethany stemmed the fierce reaction to the word beach and tried to hide her fear-induced shudder. Keely saw it anyway.

Sympathy softened her gaze. “Crap. Scratch the beach idea. In fact scratch the whole contingency plan. You won’t be needing it.”

“Actually, about the invitation…”

Keely grimaced and pointed her chopsticks at her. “You’ve talked yourself out of going, haven’t you?”

“I don’t think I can take the time off work, Keel.”

“Sure you can. Your Aunt Melanie has suffered her second heart attack in two months. All those donuts and greasy short ribs the doctors warned her about are finally taking their toll. They don’t know if poor Aunt Mel will make it this time.”

“Jesus, Keely, Aunt Mel is as healthy if not healthier than the horses she rides several times a day. I spoke to her on her birthday last week and she’s as fit as a fiddle.”

“Iron Balls Sheena doesn’t know that. She’s approved you taking all of the vacation time you’ve accrued in the last two years to visit your aunt’s death bed in Montana. And…” Keely fished her cell phone out of a pocket and waved it at Bethany, “she just texted me back to say she’s also happy for me to keep her updated so you don’t need to check in every fucking day.”

Bethany couldn’t stop her mouth gaping. “You packed a bag, ordered food for us and texted my boss asking for time off all in what…twenty minutes? Just so I’ll go on this trip?”

“Yup.”

“And Sheena believed the excuse you made up?”

“Why wouldn’t she? She still thinks I quit Neon last year because she drove me to a nervous breakdown and not because Rubio Events poached me. Bet she’s scared spitless I might sue her ass.” Keely grinned and handed over a steaming plate. “I love it when you get that look on your face.”

“What look?”

“The one that says you don’t know whether to kiss me for coming through for you or bitch-slap me for grinding your excuses into dust.”

“Yeah, because I’ve learned to my grief that when you’re this determined, one of us ends up doing something she’ll regret. And most of the time, it’s me.”

Keely waved her away and went over to the sofa Bethany had vacated minutes earlier. She stared down at the envelope with the same awe Bethany had felt since opening her mailbox almost an hour ago. “Wow. I mean…fucking wow.”

Bethany released a shaky breath and felt a little better that she hadn’t blown the momentousness of the situation out of proportion. “I know, right?”

Keely nodded. “We still need to open it, babe. We’re not going to get the juicy details by staring at it all night.” With a deep breath, she snatched it off the table and ripped it open.

Bethany held her breath until the need for oxygen made her inhale greedily. “What does it say?”

“You’re leaving on Sunday from Newark. First stop is Shanghai…you’ll have your own personal guide, chef and a bodyguard throughout the experience…holy crap!”

“Bodyguard? Why would I need—”

Keely held up a hand. “Second stop is Bora Bora. Jesus, Bethany, I’d kill to go to Bora Bora! Third stop, the Aleutian Islands—where the fuck are they?”

When Bethany shrugged, she continued. “Fourth stop London, fifth stop is Monte Carlo.” She stared into space and sighed. “This is fucking unbelievable, Bethany. Did you think you’d hit the jackpot like this when you researched The Indigo Lounge and found out they take a wild-card guest once a year free of charge?”

“Nope. We both thought it was a joke at the time, remember? I mean, what would a multi-billion dollar organization have to gain from offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this?”

“Maybe Zachary Savage doesn’t want the world to think he’s just a super-rich dick?”

“Why should a guy who doesn’t give personal interviews and is practically a recluse care what the world thinks of him?” Bethany asked.

“Jeez, I don’t know. But let’s not stare this gift heifer in the mouth.” She pointed the edge of the envelope at Bethany. “This invitation has fallen into your lap and you. Are. Going.”

Bethany pressed her lips together to stop the torrent of objections rising inside her. On the one hand, she was thrilled—beyond thrilled. On the other, her self-confidence had taken a severe blow six months earlier when her long-term boyfriend had left her…for another man. Her shock at Chris’s double betrayal still hadn’t worn off. More and more lately, she was beginning to wonder if it would ever wear off.

“What else does it say?” she asked to distract both herself and Keely from the reasons why taking this step felt so very daunting.

Keely glanced down at the envelope. “The usual disclaimers—total, unwavering confidentiality or you lose both kidneys, no drugs on board the jets…no drugs on board the jets…no drugs on board the jets or you’ll be prosecuted…jeez, they really hammer the ‘no drugs’ things home.”

“Maybe someone had a bad experience with drugs on board?”

“Hmm…they have twenty-four hour entertainment on board, but the private suites are private. Fuck, if you come back and tell me you never left your suite, I’ll kill you.” Keely glared at her.

“I haven’t agreed I’m going yet, Keel.”

Her best friend sighed and dropped the envelope. “Listen. I know why you don’t want to go. Chris-the-A-hole did a real number on you with that I-prefer-men thing, I get that. Hell, it didn’t even happen to me and I was fucking traumatized. But you need to move on, baby girl. You’ve worn out six vibrators in the last six months and God knows how many more dildos, and those are the ones you’ve told me about—”

“Keely!”

“You’ll break your goddamn clit if you don’t stop using battery powered gadgets on it and believe me, you need your clit for when a real man comes along. Seriously, can you tell me you don’t miss the real thing? A warm body against yours, a hard cock inside you?”

Heat suffused Bethany’s face and she sagged onto the sofa. “Okay, fine I do but—”

“No buts.”

“Yes, buts! For fuck’s sake, Keely. The last hard cock I had inside me decided it preferred anal with other men. It is any wonder I have a goddamn complex?”

Keely’s green eyes gentled in sympathy. “Of course not.”

“Those are stories we read in trashy magazines and laugh ourselves hoarse. Do you know how it feels to know I’m suddenly that girl? The one who couldn’t keep her man happy enough, so he jumped into bed with another man?” Even after all this time, just saying the words made her stomach turn over with pain, anger and disgust.

Slowly, Keely shook her head, but then she got the look in her eye. The look that said, I love you but… “No, I don’t know how it feels, honey, but neither am I going to let you hide away forever because of what that asshole did. What better way to get over it than to open yourself to new experiences? You go, you have a sizzling, no-strings-attached hook up in the lap of pure luxury, and you come back and move on with your life. Bethany, the Indigo Lounge couldn’t be more perfect for you right now.”

“It’s not that easy…”

“Yes, it is. You need to get your ex out of your system, and a flying sex palace is just the way you’re going to do it. You really should give up trying to fight me because I’m not letting you chicken out of this, B. It’s time to step back into the real world.” She picked up her dish and sat back, chopsticks poised. “Now eat up, you’ll need your strength to keep up with the to-do list I’ve drawn up for you.”

What is that noise?

Lifting up from my pillow, I shake my head and listen for it again. I don’t have to wait long. A pounding strong enough to shake the entire building comes from downstairs. It takes me a moment to place where I am. The pile of boxes and trash bags in the corner are a quick reminder that North Carolina is a fresh start.

The pounding comes again and I hurry out of bed, grabbing my robe as I make my way to the stairs. Since the place isn’t opening for another month, I’ve been leaving the door to my unit open at night. Clinching my robe tight around my waist, I take the stairs two at a time. It’s a back stair, colonial style, letting out at what was once a kitchen. When I turn at the bottom of the stairs, I have a straight line of sight to the front door.

The view greeting me stuns me into to an unexpected standstill; so much, that my body rocks from the impact of it. The front door is steel with a window making up the top half of the door, steel trim surrounding it. There, lifting an arm that looks as thick as my leg is a mountain of a man.

Three things hit me at that moment; first, if I can see him, he can see me; second, it’s the middle of the night, and third, I have no clue what to do.

“Hey,” he booms.

I’m shocked the window is still intact not only from his pounding but from the impact of his voice. At the sound of it, I jump, but don’t move any closer to him.

“I need help,” he continues.

At that moment, I realize he has only knocked with one hand and is cradling something in his other arm.

The roots holding my feet in place retreat, and without thought, I dash to the door and begin unlocking it. There’s the regular door handle lock, a deadbolt, and a slide lock at the top of the door. Tugging the door open the stranger wastes no time in advancing into the room. I step out of his way and move toward the light switch. Once the room is flooded with light, my brain processes the sight before me.

He has to be 6’4 maybe even taller, with dark brown hair at least a year past its last haircut, and a face that’s at least half a month overdue for a shave. His shoulder stops my perusal of him, or rather what’s over his shoulder.

“Oh, my God. What happened?” I ask, rushing over to look at what appears to be a German shepherd he’s holding.

“He’s wheezing and vomiting. I don’t know why.”

I gulp at the tremble that was unmistakable in his words.

My mouth drops as my eyes fully connect with his golden brown ones for the first time.

“Where should I put him?” he asks, looking around.

“I’m not a vet,” I stammer.

His brows furrow and he half turns to glance out the still open door and to the clearly illuminated sign that says 24 hour Critter Haven and Spa.

“We don’t open for another month,” I stammer in an attempt to explain.

His head turns back to me, the gold in his eyes no longer panicked, now hard. “Save my fucking dog.”

His words whip out like a physical blow and I lift my hands to protect myself. It’s now that I fear for my safety. Now, after letting in a stranger, a giant one who is clearly not in his right mind, I’m afraid.

Review

Holy Shit can Mandi Beck write angst…so much so that I feel like I’ve been through the wringer and back. Both Deacon and the Princess have made mistakes – big and small – they’ve hurt and broken each other numerous times, but they keep going back to each other because they’re each other’s other half – the other part of their souls, and both refuse to give that up…both keep fighting because the love that they have is too forceful…too penetrating to let it go even if their love hurts and burns them numerous times, they won’t throw in the towel…they’ll win each other forever regardless of the obstacles and boy do they have some huge ones to struggle through in Love Burns.

I’ve never doubted Deacon’s love for his Princess, but his overwhelming feelings for her and because of her send him down paths that he can’t take back. I wanted to throttle him numerous times in Love Burns because he’s such a stubborn fool and refuses to listen to anyone when he feels he’s in the right – for that matter, even when he knows he’s in the wrong. He’s intense…volatile…hot headed, but those are the same attributes that allow him to overcome extreme situations and rally for the outcome he needs and wants.

“From the inside out, you fight”

“Stick and mother fucking move”

These ideas are pivotal for both Deacon and Frankie in Love Burns because so much shit goes down that threatens to unravel them, not only as a couple but also individually. There’s only so much a person can deal with and Deacon and Frankie are pushed to that edge and at times it seems like they’re not going to be able to pull one another back, but that’s when it counts the most and that’s when people find out what they’re made of, which is exactly what Mandi Beck allows readers to see and understand through Deacon and Frankie’s refusal to give up the fight…to push through the hell and move on.

Love Burns is everything that I wanted Deacon and Frankie’s concluding story to be…it’s packed with emotion and angst, and it demonstrates what the will of a fighter truly is. Mandi Beck does a phenomenal job of allowing readers to feel EVERYTHING that Deacon and Frankie feel, which was sometimes pretty overwhelming, but essential for us to understand that the love between those two was something they couldn’t give up on regardless of how difficult, frustrating, and hurtful it became because they’re nothing without each other.

About the Author

Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.
A nursing student, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met.
Love Hurts is her debut novel and she is currently working on the next in the series along with whatever other voices are clamoring for attention in her mind.

What happens when the one you want is the only one you can’t have?

My name is Sevin.

Homeschooled and sheltered by my ultra-religious family, I was always taught that lust was a sin.

Elle was the girl who’d been carefully chosen for me.

After a long-distance courtship, I’d be moving into her family’s guesthouse so that we could get to know each other in the months before the wedding.

Boundaries were set: no inappropriate touching, no kissing, no sex before marriage.

I’d accepted those rules and my fate.

Until I met the one I wanted to sin with.

That was when restraint became a problem…especially since THE ONE wasn’t Elle.

It was her sister, Evangeline.

You know what they say about best laid plans.

My name is Sevin, and I have sinned.

Told in alternating points of view, Sins of Sevin is a full-length standalone novel.

Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language.

Only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.

Review

With Reagan’s identity revealed, the fact that she’d lied to Evan from the beginning, and Reagan’s misperception of events, any progress they made is mute, but there’s one thing neither Reagan nor Evan can deny and that’s how their bodies crave each other’s, so they’re both left deciding if it’s worth the risk to continue to pursue how they feel or cut their losses now before either one of them gets in too deep, which is actually quite absurd because Reagan and Evan are all in already, their minds just need to catch up with their hearts and bodies.

Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine’s A Desperate Man series proves that even broken and damaged people can learn how to love with more than just their bodies if the right person is willing to not walk away. Evan and Reagan made a lot of mistakes throughout the three texts and used sex on a number of occasions to hide the truth that was just below the surface, but when everything unraveled, they stood up for themselves and fought for more than filthy fucking.

Frank and Blaine definitely know how to dirty up a text with characters who hold nothing back when it comes to fulfilling their sexual desires. Evan and Reagan play a series of deliciously steamy and complicated games with one another, and while they both deceive and make a number of missteps, in the end, the desperation of one man and woman leads to a connection that they both crave and need in order to rid themselves of their pasts.

“SO LET ME get this straight.” Dr. Glover lifted the end of his pen to his lips as his eyes narrowed on Evan over the top of his glasses. “The woman we’ve been discussing over the past few weeks finally shows you that she wants more, and you left her in an emotional heap in her office. Did I get that right?”

Evan stretched his long legs out in front of him. She thinks I fucked a prostitute the day after I left her apartment, so, yeah, that’s about right. Sighing, he leaned back into the worn leather couch. “You left out the part about her being a liar. And not someone I met in the last few weeks. She had an agenda.”

“So did you.”

“And what the hell was that?”

“You wanted to fuck her.”

“Jesus, you get right to the point, don’t you?”

“Well, that’s what you do. Isn’t it?”

I thought it was until I became obsessed with a leggy fucking blonde. Evan glared at the man whose eyes he swore fucking twinkled. “Even if it is, what therapist talks like you do? I’m positive they don’t teach you that in Patient-Client Relations 101.”

“I’ve always been a firm believer in no bullshit. I told you that the day you walked in and tried to lie to me. We aren’t going to make any progress if you don’t trust me and I don’t trust you.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re just—”

“Yes, Evan?”

Evan waved him off. “Nothing. I guess I’m still trying to process the fact that Reagan is that little girl from so long ago. A whole fucking life ago. It’s… I don’t know,” he said, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “It’s disconcerting. She knew me before.”

“And that bothers you.”

“Fuck yes, it bothers me. I was ten years old the last time I saw her. Innocent. And now I’m…this.”

“You’re awfully hard on yourself. I wonder if you’re upset over what you’re saying or over Reagan thinking bad of you.”

And there it was. The truth he didn’t want to admit. Reagan accusing him of being with anyone hours after he’d been with her had infuriated him. Which was ridiculous, because he knew what he was. The demons he’d been trying to fight. Why would she assume anything but the worst? But with that anger came embarrassment and shame. He hated that she’d seen him on that corner. Hated that she’d seen him with Layla. But how the fuck could he ever convince her otherwise? And why would he even want to?

“She’s a liar,” he said.

“And you’re a sex addict. Fantastic pairing.”

About Brooke

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.

Flash Point is her debut solo novel, and she is the co-author of the erotic serial, A Desperate Man, with Ella Frank. The latter has scarred her conservative southern family for life, bless their hearts. Licked, a romantic comedy, will be released on November 11, 2015.

If you’d like to get in touch with her, she’s easy to find – just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that’s dominated her cell phone for ten years.

RELEASE BOOST: EXCERPT AND GIVEAWAY: The Trials of Guinevere DeGrance by L.B. Dunbar‏

Title: The Trials of Guinevere DeGrance
Series: Legendary Rock Stars #5
Author: L.B. Dunbar
Genre: Rock Star Romance
 Release Date: September 14, 2015
Blurb

Don’t judge me. I know you want to, but let’s get some facts straight in my defense.

1.       I love Arturo King

2.      Arturo left me behind.

3.      I was lonely.

4.      Lansing was an old friend.

5.      I love Arturo King.

Did you burn the fictional damsel in distress that cuddled and kissed her best friend when her fantastical boyfriend disappeared for months? No, you didn’t. You sympathized with her loneliness before you read ahead to make sure the boyfriend was coming back to her. Loneliness is not a crime. It’s cruel to be alone, but not a crime, the last I knew. If it is a crime, I’ll light the match to ignite myself for what I’ve done. Goodness knows, I’m burning up with guilt as it is. In my defense, I want my story to be told before I’m judged too harshly. Arturo King might be a rock legend, but he and I are human. We make mistakes. We made mistakes. Do we need to suffer for all of eternity because of them? I hope not. The jury still seems to be out, though. The greater question is: Is it possible to rekindle our love, when the past could burn us all?

Prologue

Guinevere

If I ever wondered what the pits of hell felt like, I sensed my current position was similar to being in the fiery depths. The orange-yellow glow danced before me; blinding me to the man I knew was on the other side of the flames. His face was melting, fading in the fumes that surrounded and flowed from the heat. I sensed the wooden walls of the barn structure were crackling and eventually would crumble, but I continued to stand as if frozen. There would be no chance to freeze under the circumstances. If anything, I should be melting slowly to form a puddle on the floor. My skin felt as if it would peel off of me, one droplet of sweat at a time.

The blaze started in an attempt to gain Arturo’s attention. The boy wanted to impress his father: a rock god who stubbornly ignored his son, as he had done over a year ago in this same barn. The Barn. The place of inspiration for Arturo King and his band, The Nights. The place where they performed their magic through music. The place that marked where history was made.

I continued to stare through the flames that separated us. I could see that his lips were moving; calling or shouting out to me, but I couldn’t hear over the roar of the fire. His face was warped in my vision, drifting with the bright light that framed his head filled with dark waves and a jaw covered thicker than before. His brown eyes looked black as they stared back at me. I was trapped. The flames formed a wall between me and my beloved; a man I loved more than anyone. A man who I hurt more than I ever intended. A man who hurt me with his mysterious disappearance and lack of communication.

I didn’t move. Allowing the heat to consume me, I decided this might be my fate. Death by fire was how the adulteress was punished in ancient times. Of course, in romance novels a hero comes to the aid of the persecuted. My mind flashed to another man. He had been a hero to a little girl trapped within a burning building. He had been my hero, as well, when I was kidnapped in a drugged induced haze. He was someone I should not have been thinking of.

I continued to watch the movement of Arturo’s mouth. The roar of the flames was all that I heard. It made music to my ears, drowning out the accusations.

How could I do it? How could I be with another man?

The world seemed to stop as I struggled to give my answers. In contrast, it came alive in an orange glow that spread rapidly along the old wooden floor. My back was now against the warmth of the stones behind me. It was almost like I imagined a brick oven would feel. The ancient fieldstones were absorbing the heat and reflecting it back within the cramped space. Wood crackled above my head. The ripping sound only assured me that my end was eminent. The walls were catching and the barn was doomed to collapse.

Suddenly, I heard my name. The voice that screamed to me was clear, familiar, and not the voice that should have called for me.

“Guinie, turn around and reach up your hand,” he shouted down to me. It was like an angel spoke to me from the heavens. I couldn’t break my gaze on Arturo, but he was gesturing above me. His expression showed he clearly recognized who was over me, who was calling me. His eyes found mine through the flames and he nodded once. Then he looked away and I quickly spun reaching upward blindly. My eyes were dry, boiled orbs within their sockets. The smoke so thick, I confused it for fog. Stretching, my fingers connected with those reaching down for me. One hand was clasped, the opposite wrist encircled, and up I went into the freshness of the cool summer afternoon air. The scent of pine and lake water burned my smoke encrusted nose and I gasped for more oxygen. It was like I’d been drowning. A brief sensation I’d had a year ago in the water of that lake below.

My mind was clouded, but a passing image flashed of Arturo and me spinning in the blue water. He’d kissed me for the first time on that day then rolled us off the boat into the water in distraction. We were playful then. Not today. I heard his voice ringing in my head; his words enflamed with his bitterness.

How could I do it? Didn’t I love him?

I balanced on hands and knees in the dry earth near the burning barn. My throat was hoarse from gassy fumes and screams. I called out his name one more time, and then the inevitable happened. The wooden structure collapsed.

Author Bio
L.B. Dunbar loves the original legend of King Arthur. Inspired by this classic tale, she pulled over to the side of the road to take notes when it hit her that if King Arthur lived today, he’d be a rock star. A lover of fairy tales, myths, legends, and anything with happily ever after, she loves to read and write contemporary romance. Her Legendary Rock Stars series is complete with the final tale: The Trials fo Guinevere DeGrance, but the story began with The Legend of Arturo King. She also wrote The Sensations Collection, which includes five stand alones based on the five senses in a small town setting near Lake Michigan. Raised on one side of that lake, she grew up in Michigan, but now lives on the other side, in Chicago. Mother to four, wife to the one and only, and teacher to hundreds of former students, she looks forward to sharing more stories in the future.

Excerpt

I didn’t open my eyes. “No staying in bed all day?”

“About that…” Ethan sighed. “The good news is it will feel like we’ve been in bed for days when really it could have been mere hours.”

“Hmm?” I perked up. “Well, that’s a nice trick.”

“I’m full of them.” His eyes sparkled. “Care to know more?”

“Yes,” I whispered, my mouth finding his.

With a groan, he pushed me back against the mattress and loomed over me, his naked body glorious-looking against the sunlight streaming through the window. “Perhaps we’ll stay a bit longer.”

“Yes.” I nodded my head eagerly. “I’m your mate, after all. Don’t you want me to be pleased?”

“You were pleased at least four times last night, possibly five, if we count the time I—”

“Shh.” I put my hands over his mouth.

He smirked. “Afraid the dust will hear?”

I rolled my eyes.

“Ethan!” Alex’s voice boomed on the other side of the door. “Feed her!”

“Ignore him,” Ethan hissed.

The knock got louder. “For the love of God, she’s human. Give her food.”

“He’s a siren. He knows nothing.” Ethan continued kissing me.

“Mason will break down the door if he has to.” Fighting broke out in the hall. “Ethan, I can smell the sex from here. One immortal to another, feed her before you can’t feed from her anymore.”

Ethan growled and pulled back from me. “They have no manners.”

I was half-tempted to cover my face with my hands. Had they heard us? Of course they’d heard us, and they knew, and they could… Yeah, I wanted to crawl under the bed and hide for a few days. Instead, Ethan pounced from the bed, put on a pair of jeans, and jerked open the door while I tried to hide beneath the covers.

Alex peered over Ethan’s shoulder and waved.

I had no choice but to wave back and hope that I wasn’t as red as I felt.

“She’s alive.” Alex held up his hand for a high five. “No? Not funny? Too soon?”

“Horrible joke,” Mason said next to him. “I made eggs. She’s going to need food. Make her eat everything on the plate and—”

He was still talking when Ethan slammed the door in his face and brought a giant plate of food over to me.

“Forgive them.” Ethan scowled. “There aren’t typically secrets between us, and they’re just concerned for you.”

I pointed at the eggs, ten slices of bacon, and toast. “Clearly, they don’t want me to starve.”

“Wolves.” Ethan looked heavenward. “He should be more concerned with his own diet, the ass.”

“It does smell good.” I moved up the bed so I could lean against the headboard. “Do you eat?”

Ethan’s lips curved into a predatory smile. “I ate several times last night. Care for me to refresh your memory?”

My cheeks burned.

“So tempting.” He reached for a piece of bacon and held it to his lips, taking a small bite that had my entire body clenching to keep from reaching out and attacking him. “And yes, I can eat. I typically do eat but haven’t been because when we drink, we don’t need normal food.”

“But before me…” I grabbed a piece of toast. “You were eating normal food.”

“I like you better.” He winked. “But yes, I was.”

“Good to know I’m better than bacon.”

“Your taste…” His eyes brightened. “…is unlike anything I’ve ever had.”

“Hmm…” I licked my lips.

“Stop it,” he hissed and looked away. “Damn, I can’t watch you eat. I’m going to shower while you eat your entire plate as per Mason’s orders, and then I’ll contemplate letting you leave this room so you can go to the bookstore.”

“Ah!” I almost knocked over the food. “My job! Am I late? Will I get fired?”

Ethan burst out laughing. “It’s eight in the morning. He’s expecting you when I drop you off. No sooner, no later. You won’t get fired. He wouldn’t dream of it, and you really are adorable.”

“And hot.” I sighed.

“That too.”

“No, I mean hot, as in, it’s scorching in here.”

Ethan winced. “You may be that way for a few days.”

“Hot?”

He nodded.

“Why?”

“Too much vampire blood makes you overheat a bit.” He shrugged. “It won’t turn you— You’re very much human, like I’ve said before, but sometimes the vampire blood causes a type of burn to take over in your bloodstream, not painful, just not exactly pleasant if it’s a hundred degrees outside.”

“Good thing it’s Seattle.” I bit into the toast.

“Yes, well, I imagine at this point, raindrops would simply turn to vapor if they landed on your skin.”

I smiled.

“Shower.” He nodded. “I’m going to turn around now and walk away.”

“Narrating?”

“Apparently, that’s what I do when I can think of nothing more than ripping that sheet from your body, slamming you into the nearest wall, and possessing you all over again.”

I dropped the toast.

He growled, taking two steps toward me, then swore and turned back around.

“Have a good shower!” I called.

Another growl was his answer, and then his jeans went flying. I wasn’t laughing anymore.
