Review

Forsaken – the title of Chad’s story is quite fitting, in both positive and negative ways and on a number of levels. For six years, Chad has felt abandoned, almost giving up hope that this deadly game he’s been playing will ever have the outcome he needs to keep Amy out of danger; he’s foregone getting close to anyone that can be used against him, learning the hard way that everyone has their own agenda. Chad has  also given up his quest for money in his treasure hunting endeavors, taking up a new agenda – one that is for more than just himself, which is definitely out of character for him as a treasure hunter but not as the man who vows to protect those closest to him. Chad is a lone wolf so to speak on this journey to outwit those who paid him to find the cylinder and he’ll continue to go it alone until he figures out a way to keep it out of their hands.

I’ve been anxiously waiting for Chad to come out of hiding and end this war, so he could ensure his sister’s safety. I love that Lisa Renee Jones wrote Forsaken in only Chad’s perspective – it’s his war…his wrong to right…his payback for what happened to his family. Gia definitely is an important part of the story line, but I see her, in a way, as Chad’s redemption, because his journey to this point is tainted with mistrust, secrets, and a large amount of danger. Gia humanizes Chad, forcing him to see beyond this war and what he could have when everything is said and done.

Enemies are coming from multiple directions, and Chad needs to decide what the best course of action is, forcing him to go outside his comfort zone and put trust, even it is a bit forced, in someone other than himself. Chad is full of guilt and rage and that drives him forward to end this game and find a way to protect his sister and Gia as well as the treasure that everyone wants to get their hands on. Chad’s circle of trust expands in Forsaken, but as much as it seems things are headed in the right direction, there’s still work to be done and bringing Liam Stone into the equation seems to be advantageous for everyone, including readers, because I’m sure we’re all dying for more Liam!

Forsaken is romantic suspense at its finest. With all the twists and turns the story takes, it’s hard to know for sure who the good and bad guys are, but by the end of the text, it becomes clearer the steps that need to be taken to allow Chad, Gia, Amy, and Liam to have a life outside of the protective walls they have created.

I can’t wait to see how everything comes together in Unbroken!

It’s nearly eight in the evening when I take the elevator to our secure, key-coded floor and enter the suite, where I immediately hear, “Chad! Is that you?”

Angry, I grab the chair in front of the door and shove it aside.

“Oh, thank God,” Gia gushes, flinging her arms around my neck. “You’re in one piece.”

Stunned by her greeting, by the way her sweet curves meld against me, I fight the heat rushes through me, untangling her grip and pressing her hands against the wall. “Tell me what you know about my sister,” I demand.

“Nothing, Chad. I told you that. Is she—was she—”

“You know I didn’t find her.”

“I wanted you to find her. I was terrified for you.”

Anger expands in me, seeping into my veins, and on some level, I know it’s not about Gia at all, or maybe I just fear it will be about her. I don’t want to trust her and be wrong. “You barely know me.”

“I know you’re in pain. I know what being alone feels like, and I know that’s what you feel right now.”

Alone.

It’s a word that pierces my heart with guilt. It’s what I know my sister has felt for six long years. I was all she had, the only one she could count on, even if she didn’t know I was there—and I failed her. The pain is a seed that grows and expands inside me in an instant, and suddenly, or maybe not so suddenly, the idea of being betrayed by Gia is not as biting as the idea of failing her as well. My hands come down on her face, and I stare at her. “I have money and resources to hide you, and I promise you, no one will find you. But I won’t be there with you. I’m poison to anyone near me. You can’t forget that. I can’t forget that.”

I don’t give her time to reply. My mouth closes down on hers, my tongue pressing past her lips, stroking and stroking again, in what is instantly an aggressive, searching kiss. She moans, and I swear the sound of her moan shatters a piece of my soul that is already bleeding for my sister. In this moment, it feels like all I have left is this woman.

“Hot and sweaty sex, that’s what you need,” Jamie Lynn, better known as JL, said as she threw clothes on Violet’s bed.

“Hot sex. Hot sex.”

“Shut up, Bird!” Violet’s hands were on her hips as she tapped her foot and scowled at her annoying parrot, appropriately named Bird. “I don’t need sex. I’m perfectly content with my life.”

“Perfectly content? Bo-ring,” JL sang out. “There is more to life than ‘perfectly content.’” She pulled out a pair of skinny jeans and a top Violet had bought months before but had never dared to wear. “Oh! This one. This one’s perfect. John will love it.”

Violet loved her friend, but they were so different. Violet looked like a wholesome Texas girl, complete with freckles and a full head of blond curls, while her best friend and roommate, JL, looked like a tattooed pixie, complete with short lilac hair currently spiked up. The only thing they had in common was their southern twang and short stature. “I hope this John guy doesn’t think I’m having sex with him tonight. God, I hate blind dates,” Violet groaned. “What did you tell him?”

“That my perfectly content, wonderfully hot, sexually deprived best friend needed a meet-and-greet with Little John.” She held out her hands about a foot apart and winked. “I also told him Big John was invited to attend the date too. But most importantly, I told him Little John better be ready, willing, and able to take one for the team, because your vagina called me last night and begged me to call John for you.”

“Vagina. Vagina,” Bird squawked.

“Ugh! If you don’t shut it, I’m going to cover your cage!” Violet scolded Bird. “And as for you . . .” She pointed at JL. “I don’t want to meet Little John tonight. I don’t even want to meet Big John.” Violet scooped up all the clothes that JL had strewn across her bed and began to hang everything back up.

“What are you doing?” JL asked.

“I’m not wearing any of these things. They’re too revealing and too tight. You forget that I’m not a size zero like you.” Violet stopped in midstep, let go of the clothes, and fell back onto the bed with a groan.

“Trust me—a little revealing is fine, Vi. And so is a little tight. I assure you, men like your tits and ass better than my bony chest and tiny butt. No offense, chick, but you need a little lift in the wardrobe department. Scrubs with little yellow bunnies aren’t going to get you laid. And anyway, since when are you self-conscious?”

“I’m not. Not at all. I’m happy with my body; I just don’t want all the goods on display.” She motioned to her chest. “You know I don’t like to dress like that.” She grabbed a tiny pair of shorts JL had tossed on the bed and flung them onto the floor. “Leave something to the imagination and all that. And I’m not looking to get laid. I’m just looking for a nice guy.” She took a deep breath. “God, I think I’m going to throw up.”

“Just shake it off, girl. It’s nerves. It’s been way too long since you dated. You’re the one who’s been whining about not wanting to go dateless to our high school reunion. Prince Charming isn’t just going to knock on your door and beg to go on a date. You need to go out and meet people, especially if you’re going to find a date in two weeks.”

“Ugh! I can’t believe it’s been ten years since I’ve seen most of those people, and I can’t believe I agreed to go. I don’t know if I want to go see all those pretentious jerks.”

“We’re going. You, me, and Travis. Well, my dear twin brother doesn’t know I’m making him go yet, but he’s coming. We all have to go. You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Travis and I didn’t fit in when we started junior year, so imagine what they’ll think now,” JL said, indicating her tattooed arm. “You’re a nurse. Me, on the other hand, I’m a bartender and Travis is a broke MMA fighter. So suck it up, girlie, ’cause we’re all going. You have a couple of weeks to find a date.” JL placed her palms on Violet’s shoulders. “Take a deep breath.”

Violet followed JL’s instructions.

“Tonight’s just a date,” JL continued. “I was just kidding about Little John. Big John’s not expecting anything more than a nice meal at the Pier. I’ll be right there, and so will half the town. I made sure you were at a familiar place, okay?”

Violet closed her eyes and took a shaky breath. JL handed her some clothes; Violet didn’t miss that JL had given her the too-tight jeans and the too-revealing top. “And if it doesn’t work out tonight, that’s cool too. You just go stag. No biggie.”

“You don’t think it’s too soon to date?” Violet slumped down onto her bed and began to squeeze into the clothes.

“It’s been over three and a half months since your father died. Yeah, maybe that feels soon, but before he passed you hadn’t been on a date in months. Maybe years,” JL said. “And we can’t change the date of the reunion.”

“I have dated. Remember Joe?” She was inside her walk-in closet. “Oh, and Tim. I dated Tim too. And there was a Tom and a Rob.”

“Do you only date guys with three letters in their name?” her friend teased. Violet tossed a scarf at her. “Seriously, Vi, those weren’t real dates. I’m calling bullshit, honey. It has nothing to do with your dad passing away. Even before that you never committed to enjoying yourself. You have to close your eyes and say to yourself, ‘I’m going to try.’ That’s all I ask, that you at least try. And not for the sake of the stupid reunion but because you deserve happiness.”

“Hellooooo? John? Date? Tonight?” Violet waved her arms and then pointed at herself. “That’s me trying.”

“Do or do not. There is no try.”

“What?”

JL laughed and waved her hand. “Yoda. Star Wars. Never mind. The point is, you better commit to at least two hours, and I don’t want to hear anything dumb, like how he chews weird or has an uneven haircut.”

Review

King, Doe, Bear, and even Preppy’s witty back talk are present in the follow up story to King and shit definitely gets fucked up in immensely dark and dangerous ways, but if readers have learned anything about King, it’s that he comes alive when his back’s up against a wall.

He’s the King of the Causeway…the notorious Brantley King…the mother fucking bad guy, and he’ll do what he has to do to reclaim the girl who owns him and make everyone pay for taking her away from him by any means necessary. King has had his life messed up enough and he’s going to damn well make sure that whoever fucks with him and his pays for it in the harshest way possible.

There’s a lot on the line for more than just King and Doe; all the players involved have different objectives, meaning secrets, lies, and mayhem are the name of the game. King not only as to contend with Doe’s father double crossing him, but he also has blow back from his actions in King. T.M. Frazier does a great job of demonstrating that King’s lifestyle comes with repercussions, so as much as he wants to focus on Doe, he ultimately doesn’t have that luxury because the shit he’s stirred up is ready to explode. But this is when King is at his best, allowing the darkness to consume him and do what needs to be done.

In a way, King was about King’s recognition that he’s more than just a criminal…that he actually has a heart, and Doe allowed him to figure that out. The book proves how complex King is and how being with Doe opens up a part of himself that he had beaten back because of the shitstorm that was his life. Tyrant is more Doe’s transformation. She can no longer be HER, but she also can’t completely be who she was with King because as her memory comes back and everything becomes clearer, Doe comes to a new understanding about her life and the direction it’s heading and who will be with her for the ride.

T.M. Frazier is truly a gifted writer; her ability to weave a story that is both dark and dangerous as well as witty and charming is a feat that not many authors can perfect and she does it every time she crafts a tale. I can’t get enough of her multi-dimensional characters who are complete enigmas for what they’ve been through and how they react to their circumstances, and to me, Preppy, is the ultimate sidekick who continues to be felt and heard even after he goes off to have his own party!

The EPILOGUE about ruined me! It’s everything I wanted to happen, and it plays out in the best way possible.

I can’t wait to see what T.M. Frazier brings her readers next because I know it’s going to be absolutely amazing!

King snarled. “You seem to have forgotten who the fuck I am, Pup. So I’m going to remind you.” He pressed his hips against mine. “I’m the man who took you against your will and handcuffed you to my fucking bed. I’m the man who wanted you, so I fucking kept you.” He cocked an eyebrow. “Do you really think you have a choice when it comes to being mine?”

King lifted me onto the dresser and pushed himself between my legs, forcing my legs apart. He held my wrists behind my back forcing my shoulders backwards and pushing my chest into his. My dress rode up to the tops of my thighs. King pushed a strand of hair behind my ears and leaned in to me, his lips just a breath away from mine. The room was getting hot. I couldn’t breathe. I needed…I don’t know what I needed. “No more questions.”

King lifted me off the dresser and carried me and set me down in front of the full-length mirror that hung on the closet door. He stood behind me. A head taller than me and outweighing me by a hundred pounds, our differences had never been more obvious. His dark jeans and dark tank top were a stark contrast to my little white eyelet sundress. My pale skin next to his tanned. My white hair to his black. It was a sight that made my knees weak. Because although the reflection in the mirror made our differences obvious, it also made me see how well the two fit together.
