Overtime is definitely an emotional read, which makes perfect sense because there’s a lot of pain and scars to try to heal between Jordie and Kacey, and Toni Aleo’s writing makes readers feel EVERYTHING! 

Overtime is seamlessly written…all of the struggles, on both sides, were completely realistic and written in a way that forces readers to fight through their own emotions while reading Jordie and Kacey’s story. There is a bit of outside interference that threatens to undo all of the work that Jordie and Kacey accomplish throughout the duration of the text, but for the most part, Jordie’s recovery and making amends as well as his and Kacey’s growth as people and as a couple are the driving force of the text.

Toni Aleo captures Jordie’s torment so well through her word choice and characterization. I sensed his anguish, his desperation, his desire to change. Readers can feel is struggle resonating from the pages, and the torment that threatens to seduce him back to his old ways of coping, but the one overpowering characteristic that illustrates Jordie besides all of the negative ones that have owned him for many years is his determination. Jordie doesn’t want to fail again; he doesn’t want to bring anyone down, especially Kacey. The new Jordie, the one he’s hellbent of becoming, owns up to his mistakes and makes good on his promises.

Kacey is just as conflicted as Jordie, but in a much different way; she loves Jordie with everything that she has, but she can’t forget how he treated her and casted her aside so easily. She also has her own demons to navigate through and those fears and doubts play a big role in Kacey’s hot and cold demeanor around Jordie. I can’t blame Kacey for her trepidation and hesitancy. Like Jordie, she has a lot to lose if they can’t make a go at a new relationship. Toni Aleo does a great job of illustrating all of the negative thoughts that overwhelm Kacey’s psyche, and for much of the story, she allows those ill feelings to consume her and to drive her to make decisions that are definitely not in her best interest.  But just like Jordie, Kacey has to learn for herself what it’s going to take to move forward instead of holding on to the baggage of the past.

Jordie has a huge battle to win, for himself and for Kacey, and it’s not an easy journey, and it shouldn’t be because addiction is all consuming, and it dominates and destroys. But this is Jordie’s last shot with Kacey and in the final minutes of a game, that’s when Jordie’s the best at what he does, so he knows he’s got this because he refuses to allow his demons to once again obliterate what he needs to live!

I’ve read a lot of Toni Aleo’s books, and I think Overtime is her best book so far. I devoured Jordie and Kacey’s story, and as frustrated and angered as I was with Jordie’s actions in Wanting to Forget, in Overtime, I was in absolute awe of his determination and dedication at becoming someone he and his family could be proud of, and boy does he make his overtime minutes count!

INTERVIEW WITH ALANNAH LYNNE

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I started COVETED back in 2011 when my husband’s health took a bad turn. He’d battled a brain tumor since 2007, but in 2011 it started to grow and change into a more aggressive kind of tumor, and I was really scared about the future. About that same time, I read an article written by a slave whose Master died during 9/11. It got me to thinking about moving on after the loss of a soul mate and what it must be like for a submissive whose entire world revolves around her Master. Fortunately, once I started writing, Muriel and Mathew took over and made the story all theirs, so it didn’t become too personal for me.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere! LOL It might be from something I’ve read, a television show, or song lyrics. I’d say 80% of my story ideas come from songs. Carmella, in DARING MASQUERADE, was inspired by Katy Perry’s song “Darkhorse” and the line, “She’s a bitch. I call her Karma.”

What are your current projects? 

The next story I’m gearing up to write is EXPOSED (Pandora’s Playground #2)… Lucas Steele finally gets his HEA. After that, I’ll release STRIPPED (Pandora’s Playground #3) where Mercy from GOING ALL IN (Heat Wave Novel #3) will face her demons. I’m pretty sure there will be at least 1 more Pandora’s Playground story, but I might release one or two Heat Wave stories before the 4^th Pandora’s Playground. I still have to write Heat Wave stories for Steve, Robby, and Tyler. 🙂

What is for you the perfect book hero?

For me, he needs to be a little wounded so he can realize how much better his life is with the heroine in it. I really like heroes with a sense of humor (which was a struggle for me while writing COVETED because in the beginning, Mathew had no sense of humor). And he’s got to have great eyes and a killer smile. A sexy body is good, but the smile is most important.

I went to lower my lashes so I didn’t have to see how he really felt about me shining out of that reflective gaze.

I frowned at him as he continued to loom over me. “What are you suggesting, Detective?”

Consumed By You is a great addition to the Fighting Fire series because it proves that some fires shouldn’t be put out; they should actually be stoked, increasing the heat and sizzle to the point that it’s scorching.

She let go of his hands to stand up, then sank back down, straddling him. Oh, hell. There went any breathing room in his jeans. His dick did its best approximation of a flagpole.

She cupped his shoulders, looking him square in the eyes. Being this close to her was dizzying, and an absolute rush. “Because, Travis, I can’t get you out of my head. Or my body. Hard Charger is a super quick read that illustrates Lia, the woman Rowan helped rescue in book 1,  having the strength and the confidence to slowly rebuild her life after she succumbed to the darkness of what happened to her.

Lia’s story begins about 9 months after she became a part of the Castle Creek Whitetail Ranch; she’s coming out of her shell more, but there are still things that trigger her memories and force her to draw inward again.

But what Hard Charger also demonstrates is Lia’s determination to move past what happened to her and feel alive and safe in the arms of the two men who had her back since the beginning – Cam and Travis.

Cam and Travis are interesting heroes who remain a bit of a mystery even at the end of the text; readers don’t learn much about them except for the fact that they both want to give Lia what she needs, and while I understand why the focus is on Lia’s transformation, I had questions about the two men in her life that were left unanswered.

Lia’s need and love for two men does make sense to me because of what she experienced at the hand of a group of vile men, but Lia as well as Cam and Travis are new to a menage relationship, so I felt like there needed to be more insight into why they chose this journey.

Regardless of my need for more information, I really enjoyed Hard Charger. I love the world that Meghan March has created due to the power grid failure and there are multiple ways this series can be extended, leading to more suspense, angst, and passion.

One key idea that seems to be strewn throughout the Flash Bang series is that it may be unconventional but in the world that now exists on the outside, it’s all about making oneself happy and not giving a damn who doesn’t approve.

Flash Bang is the perfect title for what happens to Rowan Callahan when a complete power grid failure sends the United States into a post-apocalyptic situation. Good thing for Rowan, her father is a doomsday prepper, so she knows exactly what needs to be done in order to survive and head back to her family home. But on her way, that’s when her life takes a new direction, and she finds herself wanting a relationship that she would have never considered before – one that would be considered taboo in modern society, but with what has happened to society, it seems only fitting that people rely on their own desires to find happiness in the chaos that has ensued and that’s exactly what she plans to do – people’s opinions be damned.

I absolutely loved Rowan! She is a kickass heroine who can hold her own in almost any situation. When she arrives on Castle Creek Whitetail Ranch, she has every intention to flee and make it home to her family – the people she has let down far too often in her life – despite the fact that there are two strong and handsome men who stake a claim for her body and her heart.

Zach and Graham are the perfect pair for Rowan because they bring different qualities into their relationship. They are definitely both alpha males and take know how to take control, but they also play off of each other’s personality, enabling both of them to get what they want. Zach is more of a carefree guy than Graham is, which works well because Graham is a bit high strung. But regardless of how quick tempered Graham is, he’s also incredibly protective and yearns to have someone put him first for once in his life.

I love that Meghan March keeps Rowan a snarky, witty, and stubborn woman throughout the story despite her affection for the two alpha males in her life. March has also created a great cast of characters to surround her leading woman and men with and hopefully their stories will be told as well.

It’s an interesting setting that this menage story takes place in, and I’m sure it’s only going to be more intriguing as the US tries to regroup and seek help from those who can provide it. In a post-apocalyptic environment, rules and regulations are a thing of the past, so as word spreads about the ranch, Graham and is men are going to have to protect their group as well as their land, and it’s not going to end well for some of them.
