Review

I’m a huge Michelle Valentine fan. She creates fantastic alpha heroes who find heroines who are not only willing to put up with all that comes with their professions, but they actually make everything better despite the angst and drama that surrounds them.

As soon as I read the premise of Wicked White, I wanted to dive in and find out everything there was about Ace White/Ace Johnson, and at the beginning of the story, I understood why the one thing that had always been his constant – music – didn’t even hold his passion anymore because it had been turned into nothing more than a product to make money. He lost himself and needed an escape to regroup and figure out what his next step would be not only in the music business but his life as well. And, I get that he felt he needed to run away and keep his identity a secret, but the way he handled a lot of things, especially his initial treatment of Iris, frustrated me and didn’t allow me to connect with him as a hero as much as I would have liked. He definitely makes up for his behavior but then it seems the extreme opposite of how he acted at the beginning that it gave me a bit of whiplash.

Iris is a kind and caring girl who is down to earth and real, which is exactly what Ace wants and needs, but he’s conflicted due to the timing of everything.  Iris deals with the broody rocker the best she can and shows Ace that he can trust her, but in the media circus that surrounds Ace’s life and his reaction to a pivotal situation, things go awry for Iris and Ace and the fallout might be more than their burgeoning relationship can take.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Wicked White; it took a bit to get into it because it seemed to be a bit slow moving, but when things started heating up, the storyline drew me in. Even though I had a hard time understanding Ace, Michelle Valentine illustrated his motives well and allowed him to find a path that, while not ideal, would hopefully allow him to work everything out, but readers will have to wait to know for sure until the next book.

Amy Knight is smart, ambitious, and back home in Chicago to care for her mother. A courtesy meeting with one of the top lawyers in the city should be a boost to her career…

Who’s chasing whom? It all depends on the day. Or the night.

A STAND-ALONE, ONE TO HOLD NOVEL. Contemporary/Erotic Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Every time Tia Louise releases another book in her fabulous One to Hold series, I can’t wait to dive in and see what conflict and angst her newest hero and heroine are going to run into as well as how the chemistry between them plays out on the pages, and Marcus and Amy definitely do not disappoint!

In my opinion, One to Chase is divided into two parts –  Amy running and Marcus chasing and then Amy and Marcus trying to find a way to fly together, keeping the freedom Amy desperately craves and giving them a relationship that’s worth fighting for.

Amy Knight has always been a “no strings” kind of girl because she refuses to allow someone else to control her or dictate her happiness. The idea of more has never been something she’s put any value in because not only is it a foreign concept, but it’s one that she’s never seen work out. Amy’s always ready to move on from a relationship when she feels things are getting too serious, and her ability to do so has never let her down, allowing her to dictate the rules and parameters for anyone she dates.

But the game drastically changes when she meets Marcus Merritt. He has his own set of rules, and he knows just how to get what he wants because not only does he know how to use his argumentative skills as one of the best attorneys in Chicago, but the way he commands a woman’s body and ignites it with just his dirty talk allows Marcus to potentially get from Amy what no man has ever had before – her willingness to stay.

Amy Knight is an interesting character, and I love that Tia makes it clear to readers why she is the way she is, but it’s also frustrating to witness. From the onset, Amy knows things are different when it comes to Marcus, but regardless of what her heart is telling her, her mind can’t erase the past…it can’t remove the need to have total control of all of her choices and be claimed by no one but herself, making Marcus work for everything he gets from her regardless of how desperately she wants him.

Marcus Merritt is one hell of a sexy alpha male who dominates the courtroom and the bedroom with his take charge personality. He’s intelligent, driven, and hardworking, which is exactly why he’s willing to chase Amy despite her runaway philosophy. He knows she’s worth it and will stop at nothing to prove to her that he’s worth it as well.

I also loved the social status aspect of the story line. It definitely sheds light on the social order of things and what people will go to in order to remain at the top…even if they don’t truly deserve to be. Social snobbery in the upper class is always there and at the forefront of this issue are women whose insecurities make them total bitches who will use anyone or anything to have people bow down to them and that is showcased in One to Chase with Amy and a few other supporting characters.

Marcus and Amy’s story is a fantastic addition to the One to Hold series. I love that the focus of the text is on the hero/heroine’s relationship and the work that needs to be done to keep Amy from running. These two characters are not entrenched in the surrounding turmoil that the other couples faced, so outside issues aren’t really a concern this time around.

“Uncertainty is essential, the ultimate freedom.”

That’s exactly the idea that Marcus needs to teach Amy throughout One to Chase and it’s the concept that will hopefully no longer make her afraid to give up some of her need for control and fly.

Excerpt

“Why, Cammie, can’t nobody say you forgot how to two-step, and that’s a fact,” her dance partner, Lloyd, a former high school classmate, remarked as they whirled around the scuffed wooden floor. He’d been one of several familiar faces she’d come across since they’d arrived.

She’d given up, and given in. “Thanks, Lloyd, I’d forgotten how much fun this is. I don’t think anyone could forget how to two-step. It’s so easy.” The name of the dance itself should clue one in to the simplicity.

“Aw, Cammie, it’s just ’cause you such a natural. Not everybody can do it like this, you know?”

She glanced around, realizing in about a second that, indeed, there were less than capable two-steppers all around. “I guess I’d never really thought about it.”

The song ended much too quickly. Not because she couldn’t bear to part company with Lloyd, though he was a handsome fellow and a good dancer, but because she was truly enjoying herself. Approaching the rather large table where her sisters and brother had taken on several others, she noticed a little ripple of shifting eyeballs. “What’s going on?”

Ignoring her, Emma said, “You sure were cuttin’ a rug out there with Lloyd, girl. Whoa, I haven’t seen you dance like that in years.” She smiled brightly.

Cammie crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at them, then repeated, “What’s going on?”

“Might as well tell her. She’s bound to hear it in here or see for herself,” Maeve said.

“Tell me what?”

Jo Jo stood, linked arms with her, and began leading her in the direction of the small bar over in a far corner. Just before they came too close, she pointed through the throng. Cammie followed her sister’s line of vision and she spotted Grey sitting alone at the bar.

He was sipping a longneck and appeared to be brooding. Nothing like the hottest guy in the bar sitting there like he was waiting for her. Well, hell. She couldn’t very well go back to having a good time with her people without at least saying hello, could she? It didn’t seem very nice, especially since he appeared fairly miserable hanging there by himself. Maybe she would wait a little while and then come back—

At that moment, his head snapped up and he caught her staring through the crowd. Her feet instantly became blocks of cement, and utterly unmovable. Crap.

He smiled then and raised his beer in salute to her, slapped a bill on the bar, nodded to the bartender. Within a half a second he was closing the distance between them without breaking eye contact with Cammie. She tried again to move, feet still frozen, rooted to the floor.

She straightened her shoulders, realizing a getaway wasn’t happening at this point. The intensity with which he bore down was intimidating, but maybe she’d asked for it with her surprised expression he’d caught her casting in his direction.

“Cammie,” he murmured into her ear, his breath warm, his firm but gentle grip seared her bare upper arm, calloused fingers directed her to a less visible spot away from her family and interested onlookers.

What the hell was her problem, anyway? She had a fiancée. And she and Grey had been in near contact for these past weeks without major incident. Why should this moment be any different? She allowed herself to be maneuvered to a more private area.

He was only slightly manhandling her, but she wasn’t sure she didn’t like it—just a little.

Grey stopped as they reached a small area where a few couples danced in a darker corner, seemingly unaware of anyone else. The bar was laid out like an octopus with four arms, with several small bars and dance floors stretching out like appendages from the main area. Cammie and Grey stood toe-to-toe as an old, slow George Strait song began. Before she realized what was happening, she was wrapped in his muscular arms, breasts pressed against his chest, swaying softly to their song.

She’d consumed a couple of longnecks, resulting in a lovely tingly sensation. Combined with the soulful country ballad playing, reminiscent from their dating years, perhaps it was no wonder she was experiencing more than a little emotional and physical sizzle of electricity. Considering she’d always been wildly attracted to Grey, she might want to rein herself in. She inhaled the scent of him, closed her eyes, and fell back in time.

Dear Lord. Why did he make her feel like this? What was it about him that caused the young girl who’d loved and trusted him with her whole heart to take over without a even a struggle from older, smarter her who’d thrown in the towel the moment they’d locked eyes?

At this particular moment, she couldn’t think, only feel and remember what it’d been like with Grey.

Phoebe St. Claire

“We’re a good team you know.”

I lifted my head in question.

“We fit together well.”

Feeling naughty, I threw him a saucy look.

As expected, he smiled a rueful grin. “Not like that.”

My heartbeat went sky high but I contained the effect he had on me and raised a sensual brow.

“Well, yes like that, but I mean in business. We work well together.”

Call it hopeful expectation but I knew we would. Gratified, I relaxed back down against his chest and murmured, “We do,” before hitting play on the remote. It meant a lot to me that Jeremy valued my opinion when it came to business decisions. He’d confided in me about his plans for Jet Set and we had even discussed the best ways to grow membership as well as which cities would be ideal targets when he was ready to expand. I pondered our business savvy as he drew shapes on my back but when the movie started, I dedicated my attention to Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Sometime during the movie, we must have fallen asleep because a pounding on my door woke me up. “Stay here, it’s probably Mrs. Bardot wanting to see her dress on me. I’ll just tell her I’ll come by before we leave.”

“Sounds good,” he mumbled as he covered his head with the pillow. All the sex we’d been having was probably wearing him out. I knew it was me.

I opened my door to find Lily standing there.

“I kissed a girl,” she announced.

I simply blinked at her.

“And he liked it.”

I stepped aside for her to enter. “Preston?”

She traipsed over to the couch and flopped herself down. “Yes, Preston.”

I pulled a blanket off the back of the sofa and sat in the chair. “I thought you weren’t having sex?”

“We weren’t. That’s the point.”

“Lily, I’m just waking up. Help me out a little.”

She covered her face in her hands as she spoke. “After I got off the phone with you, I went to go find Preston. It was late and he wasn’t in his room. When I called him, he told me he was in the hotel bar. I went down there to find him sitting with a French woman who didn’t even speak English.”

I was confused. “What was he doing with her?”

“I asked him the same thing. He told me it was nothing. That he was just sitting with her. I asked why and he told me he had overheard my conversation with you and felt bad that I was feeling sexually frustrated. Well hello, I told him, he could fix it.”

I grimaced.

“At least I wasn’t sitting in the hotel bar staring at a dude like I might fuck him.”

“Is that what he had planned?”

“No! That’s when he told me he’d never cheat on me. She was for me, for us, not him. And then he asked me to kiss her.”

“And you did?”

“Yes, I did, to prove a point to him. I wanted him to know I was sick of this no sex thing and if he wanted me to show him just how sick of it I was, I would. So I brought her to our room and we sat on the couch and I kissed her. Then I stood up and looked at him and asked him if I’d proven to him how much I wanted him now.”

I pulled my legs up under my chin. “And he said what exactly?”

“That he wanted me to kiss her again.”

The situation wasn’t at all funny, but I had a hard time not laughing. It was just so unbelievable. “So what did you do?”

“Packed my stuff and left him there to stare at her as I caught the next flight back to New York City.”

“Did you ever think he might have a mechanical problem and was looking for a way to . . . you know,” Jeremy was standing in my bedroom door looking yummy, all sleepy and crumpled.

Lily’s eyes shot to his. “To get it up?”

Jeremy cleared his throat. “Yeah.”

She looked at him deep in thought. “Why would he have a problem like that? He never has before.”

Jeremy shrugged. “Stress, medication, I’m really not sure. I’ve just heard it happens.”

“We have been under a lot of stress,” she admitted.

Jeremy walked toward me and put his hands on my shoulders, massaging them.

I sighed and leaned forward.

“St. Claire, focus on me.”

I laughed. I had really missed her. “You need to talk to him. Ask him about it.”

“What if he says yes? Then what? I have sex with a girl to see if he can get off?”

“Men do like girl on girl action.”

I cranked my head around. “Jeremy!” I scolded.

“I’m just being honest.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. He raised his palms. “Not me of course.”

Lily jumped up. “I have to run. I have to talk to Preston and find out what’s going on. I’ll call you,” she yelled as she slammed my door.

“What if that’s not the problem?” I asked Jeremy.

He plopped on the couch. “At least it will get them talking.”

I had to laugh.

That it would.

Salvation Teaser 1

Excerpt

“Don’t move.” He jolts up, turning my back to his. “I’m going to unclothe every inch of you and enjoy the fuck out of it.”

Goose bumps spread over my skin, which he notices.

“You nervous, Ember? I hope so, because I’m going to show you what it’s like to be loved by a real man. Every step you take tomorrow will remind you of me.”

A tremor runs down my spine as he unzips the dress and kisses his way down. When he hits the small of my back, he licks against my skin and runs his hands up to my shoulders, forcing the dress to fall. The material pools at my feet, leaving me in nothing but a strapless bra, lace panties, and strappy heels.

He picks me up as if I weigh nothing and lays me across the bed. Something in me snaps, and I move quickly, clawing at his clothes to get him naked. He helps me get his shirt off and kicks off his own socks and shoes. When I reach for his belt, his large hand covers mine and tightens.

“This is my turn, babe.” Without another word, he holds my hips in place as he kisses his way down my body, whispering sweet words. The heat of his breath against my flesh almost causes my undoing. I want this man more than I’ve wanted anything in my life.

When his mouth hits my belly button, his hands inch my panties slowly down my legs. The wait is agonizing until he sucks lightly at the sensitive skin on both my upper thighs. As soon as his tongue sweeps along my slick center, I whimper. My hands glide through his silky hair, pulling him closer. He pinches my ass, thrusting his tongue as deep as possible.

My hips tilt and legs fall open, giving him complete access.

“Look at me, Ember. Watch as I suck your sweet pussy.” His voice is rough and demanding.

When our eyes lock, I stop breathing. His stare is deep. The normal bright, beautiful blue is dark and intense. He makes a point to lick, unhurriedly, watching my reaction. His tongue circles my lips, teasing me. Then he kisses the same path until I start to tremble.

As hard as I try, I can’t stop my eyes from closing. He feasts on me as I squirm and pant, trying to hold back. His teeth lightly nip my clit, forcing feelings of to ecstasy flow. As soon as his finger slips in, I scream his name, coming apart against his lips. Waves of extreme pleasure take over, setting my nerve endings on fire.

He doesn’t ease up, sucking me in further. My vision goes spotty, and I grip his sheets tightly, trying to come down from my high. His hands roam up my torso and slip around to undo my bra before he throws it to the ground.

His moist lips kiss a path along my collarbone, stopping at the column of my throat.

“Fucking unbelievable,” he murmurs against my skin. “Your body is made for me.”

Salvation Teaser 3

Review

Salvation means different things to different people. For some, faith allows them to feel liberated and safe. For others, redemption comes from themselves, finding the inner strength to move past the hardships and survive. And still for quite a few, preservation can only occur when they feel like there is someone always on their side, fighting alongside them so that regardless of the baggage that exists, the ability to free themselves from burden can occur.

Ember Walker is a 23 year old woman who lives the life of a hermit because the scars of her past refuse to allow her to put herself out in the world and do more than survive. She’s extremely guarded and suffers from self esteem issues because she’s always been made to feel that she is inferior and worthless. But Ember’s saving grace comes in the form of a man who has his own demons but realizes early on that Ember’s light deserves to shine and regardless of the fact that Robbie Hayes feels he’s not good enough for a caring and wholesome girl like Ember, he makes it his main priority in life to crush her darkness and conquer her past.

I absolutely adored everything about Ember and Robbie’s story. It’s a text full of raw emotions felt by both the characters and readers alike. I laughed; I cried; I swooned; I raged. Ahren Sanders allows her readers into the complicated and at times dark minds of both Ember and Robbie, so we understand how much their individual torment has shaped their lives. There’s guilt over things out of their control; there’s anger over the situations they were forced to endure, and there’s an immense amount of pain and suffering still to be dealt with and the only way Ember and Robbie will conquer it is to rely on one another, which is easier said than done, especially for Ember, because for the longest time, there hasn’t been anyone in her corner, and she’s only relied on herself.

There are many layers to Ember and Robbie’s story, and Ahren Sanders takes her time in laying them out for readers, so we don’t feel overwhelmed all at once with everything that Ember has gone through and what that means for her relationship with Robbie and the trust she slowly gains for him as their bond solidifies.

With someone who is as emotionally damaged as Ember, Robbie needs to tread lightly and prove to her on a consistent basis how much she means to him, and boy does Robbie step up in HUGE ways. Robbie is an alpha to his core; he’s protective and jealous, but he’s also honest and devoted, which is exactly the type of man Ember needs. When the shitstorm of Ember’s family hits, Robbie takes the lead and does his best to shield her from any further damage at the hands of her spiteful mother and sister, but even he can’t control everything, which is why there’s progress and setbacks throughout the text, and that’s exactly how it should be written in a situation like Robbie and Ember find themselves in with uncontrollable outside forces threatening to continually wreak havoc.

I could go on and on about this book and the experience I had while reading it, but the best thing I can do is allow readers to experience it for themselves because it’s an emotional journey that you won’t regret reading.

Salvation has everything a story should have, and I absolutely loved it and can’t wait for Finn’s story!

Blurb

Christy Sheridan has come a long way from the physical and emotional wreck she used to be. She’s made Alden her home and is happily engaged to a man who loves and accepts her for who she is, curves, quirks, and geekiness included. Life is good. Until mommy dearest blows into town to “help” her clueless daughter seal the deal.

Cole Bowen is experiencing a world of firsts: first time in love, first engagement, first Valentine’s, first in-laws. He’s found the woman of his dreams, so he figured dealing with Martha Sheridan was a small price to pay. That is before his monster-in-law plants herself in their home and inside Christy’s head, stirring up old demons and destroying her newly regained self-esteem. And while his hands are full with trying to neutralize their meddlesome guest, a mysterious phone call turns his world upside down.

With ghosts from the past resurfacing and threatening to tear Cole and Christy apart, can they make it to the wedding they both so desperately want, or will heavy secrets send their relationship to the breaking point?

Excerpt

Chapter One

“How many years do you think I’d get for offing my mom? Because honest to God, if we’re talking single digits, I’m willing to risk it,” Christy said while leaning back on the lounge chair after getting a full-body massage that had left her totally gooey.

They were at the spa, wearing fluffy bathrobes and sipping tea, except for Christy, who was nursing a diet soda.

“Just name a time and place, and we’ll be there with a shovel. No questions asked,” Annie said, and Holly and Tate assented.

“I could claim temporary insanity.” Heck, emotional self-defense too.

“Don’t worry, we’ll vouch for you. No jury in its right mind would convict you,” Holly stated. “I thought you were exaggerating, but boy, were you understating. What a…character.”

Ha. That was one way of putting it.

Annie nodded in commiseration. She’d met Martha a long time ago, when the girls were in college. Christy had gone for an East Coast institution, hoping it would be out of her mom’s range, but going away had been useless. There was no place far enough.

Crazy had its own methods of reaching her.

“Where’s the Grand Diva now?” Tate, Christy’s future sister-in-law, asked.

“Checking out wedding dresses. She arranged an appointment at a bridal shop. I stood her up.”

Her whole posse turned to her, looking stupefied.

“She’s picking out a wedding dress without the bride?”

Yeah, typical Martha stunt.

“I know I should be there, but why, really? She won’t listen to anything I say. I might as well save my breath.”

And a whole lot of pain and abuse in the process.

The girls pondered for a second and then nodded.

“Oh, and remember,” Christy added, reaching for her diet soda. “I’m not here. I’m in the middle of a massive twelve-car accident. Well and healthy but stuck inside the vehicle and waiting for the firefighters to come and cut the roof open to rescue me.”

That her mom hadn’t rushed to her side when Christy called her—and that Christy had known she wouldn’t—already said it all.

“And when your mom realizes your car is intact? Then what?” Tate asked, to which Christy couldn’t help snorting.

“That would imply she remembered our talk. It won’t happen. A total impossibility.”

Christy would bet anything, her first unborn child included—and her second and third—that her mom wouldn’t even mention it. That was the advantage of being disappointed one too many times; no way in hell to harbor false illusions.

Martha’s number-one priority was…Martha. Followed by whatever man she was screwing with at the moment. How she’d managed to marry a decent guy and keep him for several years was beyond Christy. Then again, Fred was too kind for his own good. That or he had a hell of a lot of bad karma from a previous life.

For a split second, she’d considered going to the bridal shop, but then she’d discarded the idea. Defaulting to her smile-accept-and-walk-away technique, she’d nodded and kept quiet. And had run in the opposite direction at the first chance. Let her mother get her kicks. Just let her do it far away from Christy. Besides, there was no damage Martha could do; Christy had told the shop assistant not to reserve anything without her consent.

Holly poured herself more tea. “Doesn’t she know you don’t want a traditional dress for your summer wedding?”

“She knows. She just doesn’t care.” They were talking about a woman who had gotten married four times, once with a beer-can tab as a ring. Appointments at high-scale bridal shops were a dream come true for her. “I feel like a shitty daughter, but I’m so ready for her to leave.”

Martha had come for Christmas with her husband and stayed a couple of days. It had gone rather well, probably because Cole was scary enough and Martha hadn’t worked herself up to be…well, herself. This time around, she’d been in Alden for three days, without Fred, and Christy was ready to face the gallows for a chance to get rid of her.

Fate had thrown Christy the mother of all curve balls when it chose Martha as her sole parent.

Their relationship had always been complicated, to say the least, with Christy spending all her life putting out fires—Martha’s—and eating to cope. Eventually she’d gotten her food addiction under control, but changing her mom and her nasty ways was something out of her reach.

And having Martha living with her without Fred as a buffer was bringing up all sorts of feelings and automatic coping mechanisms that Christy had thought she’d left behind.

Lora, Christy’s former sponsor, had been right: nothing guaranteed recovery, and they were always one upset away from relapse.

“What about Cole?” Tate asked, taking Christy out of her reverie. “Isn’t he putting her in her place?”

He would if he knew. Apparently Martha was learning subtlety, at least in front of a 240-pound, uncompromising ex-marine. It also helped that Christy had asked him not to interfere. Cole was a black-and-white kind of person. Intransigent and not inclined to put up with moronities. Left to his own devices, he would have kicked Martha out the first day.

“She’s…contained around him. I think she’s scared of him.”

“She and half the world, sister,” Holly mumbled.

Christy rolled her eyes and, after reaching inside the pocket of her bathrobe, fished out a sugar-free cherry lollipop. “Come on. Cole is a harmless sweetie.” Who liked macho power tripping and playing with cuffs, but a sweetie nonetheless.

They’d been together for six months, and although they’d clashed several times, he’d kept his word and hadn’t shut her out. He’d leave to cool down—sometimes he went to his brother James’s; sometimes she saw him pacing up and down the yard, muttering under his breath—but he always came back and they always found middle ground.

“To you he’s harmless,” Holly corrected as Christy unwrapped the candy. “Wait until he finds out about the pole-dancing classes. Mike already told Kyra to up her insurance. And to make sure there are no guys lurking around during said classes.”

Cole and his men had started working on Kyra’s dance studio right before Christmas and had gotten it ready in no time. Anything to get the exotic aerobics and the horde of giggling women in tight thongs out of Haddican’s, the local gym, and away from so much bubbling testosterone.

“It’s all Annie’s fault,” Christy shot back, giving her friend the evil eye. “She signed me up without asking.”

Christy wasn’t much for showing herself off, and pole dancing was exactly that, but Kyra had been so excited to have her and Tate on board that it had been impossible to get out of it without hurting Kyra’s feelings.

On the plus side, Martha hadn’t found out about her daughter’s new hobby. She would have made fun of Christy or joined the classes. Either way, no number of twelve-step meetings would have helped Christy get through that trauma. Her mother was many things, but ugly and clumsy she wasn’t. That her ass and boobs were still perkily pointing north and that she moved perfectly to capitalize on that also helped. Working a pole under her reproving stare would have killed Christy and her shaky, newly developed self-esteem. For all Martha’s dumb decisions in her personal life—and boy, were there plenty—she had a witty tongue and knew how to deliver killer putdowns.

“Duh, you would have said no,” Annie replied, bringing her back to the present. “And I owed you one after you got me into exotic aerobics.”

“You know I can’t quit the exotic aerobics. I needed company.” Christy had gone there just on a whim, but then Cole saw her and, in one of his my-way-or-the-highway stunts, had tossed her over his shoulder and stomped out of the class. Now she couldn’t quit, just on principle. She needed to stand her ground with Cole, especially when he was being a control freak and attempting to fuck her into submission, which was very often.

Besides, she liked that class. And defying Cole.

Annie pursed her lips. “A pregnant woman wiggling her ass around a chair and pretending to be sexy is…definitely not.”

“I’m pretty sure Max feels otherwise,” Holly said. “I’ve seen him watching you. No way to disguise that look.”

“What look?”

“That tight expression. The she’s-mine-everyone-back-the-fuck-off glare, mixed with wait-till-I-get-a-closed-door-between-us-and-the-rest-of-the-world.”

Tate laughed. “That’s the standard Bowen look.”

Damn right. Christy had seen it on Cole’s face many times. Before and after fucking her senseless. Heck, while too. She loved that proprietary look. It said she was beautiful and he needed her. For someone who’d battled self-esteem issues all her life, it meant the world. Cole meant the world to her.

“As soon as the baby pops out,” Christy said, pointing at Annie’s seven-months-pregnant belly, “you’re marching into the pole-dancing classes with me. No frigging excuses.”

Annie shook her head. “I have shitty coordination. I’d kill myself.”

“Sure. And the swing up in Max’s room?”

They were all rosy from their facial massages, yet Annie visibly flushed. “Hmm, that’s for yoga?”

Christy couldn’t stifle the giggle. Neither could Holly or Tate.

Yeah, because Max was such a yoga type.

Christy dipped her sugar-free lollipop on her diet soda. “If I’m making an ass out of myself and Kyra is risking the integrity of her new business, you’re joining us after recovering from childbirth.”

Annie grimaced, pointing at Christy’s glass. “That’s gross. I thought you were cutting back on your weird stuff.”

Yeah, she’d thought that too. Until her mom blew into town.

“Cola-flavored cherry lollipop or cherry-flavored soda. Not weirder than scooping Nutella with bacon.”

“True, but I’m hormonal.”

Ha! Pregnancy hormones had nothing on the spike of anxiety that Martha created.

“By the way, Tate,” Holly chimed in, “did you get a pole installed in the bedroom?”

Now it was Tate blushing. “Yes.”

“And?”

She blushed even harder. She was six months pregnant, and although she had some limitations where the movements were concerned, Christy had seen her dance. Tate really knew how to make it work. She kicked ass. Pregnant and all.

“James loved it. As in really loved it.”

“On a scale of one to ten?” Holly asked, wiggling her eyebrows.

“Thirty. And don’t worry,” Tate hurried to appease Christy. “I made him promise he won’t say a word to Cole about the classes.”

Good, because Mike was right. If Cole found out, Kyra was going to need top-of-the-line insurance, especially with Amantis’s dancing crew and the security detail snooping around.

“Although I don’t see the big issue. It’s for Cole. Whenever you’re ready, he’ll be the one enjoying the result of the classes, right?”

“Right,” Christy mumbled. She’d started liking it, but considering how klutzy she felt at pole dancing, it was going to take a couple of decades before Cole got to see her.

Holly turned her inquisitive gaze to Annie. “And your, uh, yoga swing? Scale of one to ten?”

“Thirty,” she answered after a long pause, red as a frigging tomato.

“Wow. Swings, dancing poles. The pregnant ladies here like their toys,” Holly said with a grin.

Christy glanced at Annie and Tate, both fanning themselves. “We should change the subject. Before the kinky pregnant ladies faint.”

“You’re a fine one to talk. And the cuffs tucked in the drawer in your nightstand?”

“Annie!”

“What? I’m being tactful. The cuffs were the only objects I recognized.”

Okay, they were so banned from each other’s bedrooms.

“Really?” Holly asked, looking intrigued as hell. “What kind of objects?”

“We are deviating from the subject, people. We were talking about how to off my mom, remember?”

Tate waved around. “That’s easy. We bring her here, lock her in the sauna, and turn it to high.”

“It won’t work. She’s from LA. And she lived in Georgia for a while, chasing after some crocodile hunter. The heat’s nothing for her.”

“Or now that we have plenty of props,” Holly said with a wink, “we could plant Tate’s dance pole somewhere in the forest and cuff Martha to it. Leave her for the wolves.”

Poor wolves. Her mother would have them committing suicide in no time. Christy couldn’t do that to them.

“Must be a simpler way. Can’t you just send her to hell?”

Christy shrugged. It was easier said than done. Her mom had the nasty habit of doing something nice whenever Christy was reaching critical mass. She couldn’t send her to hell in good conscience.

The girls couldn’t understand. Annie had a kick-ass mom. Tate too. Holly’s she didn’t know, but the messages between mother and daughter were hilarious, so she imagined their relationship was solid. People with great parents had no clue how difficult it was to deal with bad ones.

“How long until she leaves?”

“Still a while. Thirteen days, nine hours”—Christy reached for her cell—“twenty-five minutes and thirty-five seconds, to be exact.”

Annie chuckled. “You keeping track?”

“I have a countdown set.” Every twenty-four hours, an app sent her a yay-you-can-do-this message. “She’s leaving four days before Valentine’s Day. She wants to be in LA then, so that she can prepare for it.”

“Four days in advance?” Holly asked. “What’s she planning on doing for her husband?”

“For Fred? Nothing. She goes to make sure he gets her all that she wants.”

“Oh boy.”

“You can say that again. How he puts up with her, I don’t know.”

Her smile-accept-and-walk-away technique was failing her big-time now that they were both under the same roof. Or maybe it was that she had gotten a taste for normal and supportive with Cole, and going back to mental was hard.

“We should call Fred and get some pointers,” Holly suggested. “Thirteen days is a long time. Spending your and Cole’s first Valentine’s Day in jail wouldn’t be too much fun.”

“Run to Vegas ahead of schedule. You’re going there anyway for your annual convention, right?” Annie asked.

Tate frowned. “What convention?”

“The geeky version of Valentine’s,” Annie said. “I was there once with her. Memorable. Not going ever again.”

Christy rolled her eyes and turned to Holly and Tate. “There’s a Star Trek convention held in Vegas the weekend before Valentine’s every year.” Plus this year they had the premiere of a new Star Trek movie. “And no, I’m not going. Cole wouldn’t be caught dead in a place like that. I’ve been dropping hints about it for a couple of months already, but he isn’t biting.”

Holly patted her on the arm. “So no hanging out with your nerdy friends and stuck with your mom. That sucks.”

Yep. Totally.

ABOUT SWEET SINFUL NIGHTS

A sexy, suspenseful new romance novel from Lauren Blakely, author of the New York Times Bestselling Seductive Nights series….

She was the one who got away…

Ten years ago, Brent Nichols let the love of his life slip through his fingers. It’s his greatest regret, especially since she’s all but disappeared. But when the gorgeous and captivating woman walks into his life unexpectedly, he’s determined to win her back. Whatever it takes, he won’t make the same mistake twice.

Easier said than done…

Shannon Paige has hardened her heart to the man she was once engaged to be married to. After the way he left, and after the hell she’s been through with her checkered family, there’s no way she’s letting him into her life again. The problem is, the second she sees him, he’s more handsome and charming than before. And she’s torn between wanting to fight with him and wanting to sleep with him – maybe both. Soon they fall into each other’s arms, consumed with a desire that burns through the years.

But if these two fiery lovers are going to have a real second chance at this kind of intense, passionate, bone-deep love, he’ll have to give her his whole heart, and she’ll have to give up all the secrets from her messy past.

And that messy past is about to spill over into her carefully constructed present…

Review

King Schmuck

No nickname rings truer for Brent Nichols after giving an ultimatum to the love of his life and choosing his career over her. Even 10 years later, Brent regrets his decision despite his success as a comedian and now as a night club owner. He’d give anything for another chance with Shannon Paige-Prince, and he’d prove to her that she’s more important than his job for the rest of his life if she’d let him. And a golden opportunity just landed in his lap when one business meeting gives him opening he needs to show her that despite the time and distance, she’s always been “it” for him.

I absolutely adore second chance romances, especially when readers can tell from the onset that the hero and heroine belong together and that their feelings for each other never dissipated despite the hurt and anguish felt for all the years they were apart, which is exactly what Lauren Blakely gives us in Sweet Sinful Nights.

Brent and Shannon have grown up and changed during their time apart, so they’re both going to need to realize they’re not the same people they were and hopefully that will help them move on from the past and reconnect on a deeper level. But Shannon doesn’t make it easy on Brent, and I can’t blame her for her hesitancy in getting back together with the love of her life despite how much her body is still commanded by him.

Lauren does a great job of plotting out Brent and Shannon’s new relationship – sexually, they’ve always sizzled, but in order to make it work this time around, they have to learn to communicate and recognize what the other wants and needs, which is a lot harder than owning each other’s bodies, which they’re quite apt at with how explosive their sex scenes are.

The secondary plot that focuses on Shannon’s parents adds to the intrigue of the story and even when Sweet Sinful Nights ends, there’s more behind the mystery to unravel and as the series continues, readers will get answers to the unresolved issues in book one.

Sweet Sinful Nights is sinfully sexy with a hot, dirty talking alpha male and an independent, feisty heroine who makes the hero work to win her back. The characters are well developed and the supporting characters help to shed more light on who Brent and Shannon are.

I can’t wait for more Sinful Nights!

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Blurb

Rough sex. Dirty talk. Criminal activity. Cursing. Fisticuffs. Closed course. Professional driver. Do not try this at home.**

Theresa Drazen wants to know one thing.

Is there something wrong with her?

Because from what she can see, she has money, brains, a body that does the job. Yet, she keeps getting shelved. Most recently, by her fiancé who happens to be the DA.

And she’ll get over it, really. No problem. She’ll just have a nice, short encounter with a mysterious Italian named Antonio who may or may not be involved with some kind of alleged criminal activity…blah blah…

Let’s call a spade a spade.

He’s a mobster.

Let’s face a few more facts.

He’s hot. He’s smart. And if anyone breathes on her the wrong way, he’s got no problem beating their head against a Porsche until they’re willing to lick up their own vomit to make it stop.

Just about everything about that turns her on.

Yeah. There’s something wrong with her.

Excerpt

I caught the scent again and looked in her direction, as if I could see the smell’s source. It could have come from anyone. It could have been the gorgeous black lady with the sweet smile. It could have been the plate of saucy meat that crossed my path. Could have been the waft of parking lot that came through the door before it snapped closed.

But it wasn’t.

I knew it like I knew tax code; it was him. The man in the dark suit and thin pink tie, the full lips and two-day beard. His eyes were black as a felony, and they stayed on me as his body swung into the booth.

The smell had come from him, not the other man getting into the booth. It was in his gaze, which was locked on me, disarming me. He was beautiful to me. Not my type, not at all. But the slight cleft in his chin, the powerful jaw, the swoop of dark hair falling over his forehead seemed right. Just right. I swallowed. My mouth had started watering, and my throat had gotten dry. I got a flash of him above me, with that swoop of hair rocking, as he fucked me so hard the sheets ripped.

He turned to say something to the hostess, and I took a gulp of air. I’d forgotten to breathe. I put my hands to my shirt buttons to make sure they were fastened, because I felt as if he’d undressed me.

Meet CD Reiss!

cd reiss bio

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.
