Review

The Marked Men series is, without a doubt, one of my favorite collections of tattooed alpha male goodness of all time. It’s a series that I hate to say goodbye to because every story includes fantastic characters and intriguing storylines. I didn’t really know what Jay had in store for Asa and Royal – the criminal and the cop, but I knew it was going to take someone special to prove to Asa that he deserved a chance at a happy life, and I didn’t know if Royal was up for the job because readers don’t know much about her, but as we get to know her and understand what motivates her, she seems up for the task…Asa just has to allow it to happen.

Asshole. Screw up. Bottom feeder. User.

These are the terms that define the man Asa Cross used to be and continue to be his self-proclaimed albatross. He may have drastically altered his life for the better after he died on the hospital table – a victim of his past misdeeds, but he continues to be plagued by his mistakes and the ugliness that scars his soul is something he believes can’t be repaired.

Royal Hastings knows a thing or two about self-loathing, shame, and guilt. She’s slowly self-destructing due to an incident on the job, forcing her to question her skills as a cop, a partner, and a friend. On her downward spiral, Royal sets her sights on Asa who has actually been in her line of vision for quite some time – who better to help her unravel than a co-wayward soul – someone she can lose herself in and help brighten her day if only for a short amount of time. But what Royal never anticipated was Asa’s need to save her from herself and from his own destructive personality, which is when they both realize that even if the cop and the ex-criminal sounds like a punch line in a crude joke, there’s nothing funny about what they feel for one another regardless of how unworthy Asa feels.

Going into Asa, I knew Asa’s anti-hero actions were going to plague his conscience and not allow him to see all of the self-growth that has occurred since he regained his life after his accident. Jay Crownover does an amazing job of illustrating Asa’s conflictions and the way he relentlessly tortures himself, unwilling to identify his “good guy” actions and the conscience that he seems to be acquiring. Asa may never be the shining hero, but he has become a man who should no longer feel plagued by his mistakes nor destroyed by his regret. He is who he is, warts and all, and he should embrace that because Royal understands the man who he is and was, and she wants the man he is, not who he could/should be.

“Our marks defined us, separated us, and made us the men we were today.”

Asa has never spoken truer words and that introspection applies to every hero in Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series. None of the alpha males are perfect – each of them has been shaped by his past, which has both empowered and inhibited him. Each of the girls who has stolen the hearts of her tattooed hottie is the perfect balance to his intensity and darkened soul and has marked him, both inwardly and outwardly, just as much as he has done to her, and I’ll admit – marked me just the same.

I’m finding it extremely difficult to say goodbye to Jay’s Marked Men, but I can’t wait to see what she has in store for her new series, The Saints of Denver.

I pulled the Nova to a stop in front of a duplex that had clearly seen better days. It wasn’t a rusted-out trailer in Kentucky, but it might as well have been. I turned off the ignition and sat back in the seat so I could turn to look at Ayden. She was watching me carefully and I could see how frustrated she was with the entire conversation in the way her shoulders were tensed up and the way her hands had curled into tight balls on her lap. It was the way she used to look whenever I got into trouble and she had to do something desperate and drastic to get me out of it. I reached out a hand and put it on top of her fists.

“I died in that hospital, Ayd. There were no angels playing harps. There was no redemption and repentance. I died and it was very clear that I was going to get exactly the kind of fate I had been courting with all the messed-up shit I had been doing to other people. All I could see was every wrong I had ever committed and every bad decision I had ever made exploding all around me. For once I could see how all of that affected you. I was dying, and I knew what was waiting for me on the other side, yet I couldn’t go knowing that was all you were going to have to remember me by. I had to come back and give you something else to hold on to, some kind of good memory to go with the endless miles of bad I laid at your feet. I wanted to have the chance to show you I could be the kind of brother you deserved all along, so no, I didn’t save myself—you saved me. Just like you’ve always done for my entire life.”

I saw her bottom lip tremble until she snapped her teeth around it to keep it still. Her fists unclenched below my palm and she curled her shaking fingers around my hand and her already husky voice rasped with even more emotion when she told me what I think I had needed to hear from her all along.

“I have always been proud that you’re my brother, Asa. Yes, there have been times in the past I would have gladly fed you to the wolves, and it’s no secret that I had to leave home because I didn’t know what to do to help you anymore, but we both made it out alive and are better people for it. I know you’re sorry for the way things went down when we were younger, but I need you to open your eyes and take some credit for the way you have turned it around to make things the way they are now. I’ve long since come to terms with the Asa from my childhood. What I want to do is love the Asa that’s here with me now. You need to let go of those boulders weighted with all the bad things from past that are dragging you down before you get crushed under them.”

It was eerily similar to what Royal had been telling me the deeper and deeper I sank in with her. I don’t think I was ready to let any part of those stones go just yet, but a sexy redhead was slowly and surely eroding bits and pieces of the rock the more and more time I spent with her. By the time she was done, maybe she would be able to carve out something that was worthwhile, something that didn’t eviscerate me to look at.

I leaned over enough that I could kiss Ayden right on the center of her forehead between her midnight eyebrows and I felt her let out a shuddering sigh.

“I’m never going to let you down again, Ayd. That is the one and only thing in the entire world that I can promise and know it’s a promise I will keep.”

We stared at each other for a long and silent moment. The seriousness of the words I had said to her and the fact that I could see that she understood that I really, truly meant them finally worked to absolve me of some of the guilt that seemed to suffocate me whenever I thought about the things she had done to keep me safe.

For an entire week, I’d been waiting for his hands to be on me again, and now that he was right there, I knew I’d die if he didn’t touch me. Kiss me. Take me home and ravish me like he had that first night.

“Adrian,” I whispered, surprised at the breathy, sultry tone of my voice. God, it’d only been a week and I was already dangerously addicted to him.

His eyes gleamed as if he could read my mind, and I wondered if this has been his plan all along. To give me a taste, a perfect sneak peek at what being his would be like, and then take it away, only to keep showing up to tease me. To dangle the proverbial carrot on the string that was too high for me to get a taste or even the slightest nibble. It would suffice only for a moment, but it would be just enough to keep me from going insane. He was a deranged Pavlov and I was his little dog, salivating and panting, wanting him, that torturous bell ringing over and over again, but instead of giving me what I wanted, he kept it too far out of reach.

I’m a twenty something book junkie who is also obsessed with sports. Bengals, Buckeyes, Reds are my teams! I work for the government during the day, hang out with Air National Guard on the weekends, and have been married to my own book boyfriend for over seven years. We currently live right outside of Dayton, OH with our two cats.

If I’m not writing or looking through tons of photos of hot men, all in the name of research, then you can probably find me curled up with my Kindle, ignoring the rest of the world. I love my sports almost as much as I love my books. My other obsessions include red wine, hot men, country music, and all things Grace Potter.
