** Part two of a three part serial **
The choice is steep: Stay on the ledge and steal Van’s painting or take the leap and sacrifice her sister. It’s another decision in a long line that she’s had to make in her life, and though it’s easy to make, it’s impossible to execute.
Jade won’t let Cory go until she gets what she wants, but the price for Cory is high. It’s never been hard to steal, to lie, but Van changed all the rules. It was the last thing she wanted to do to him. But as much as that choice is agony, there’s really only one to make.
Betrayal and pain. Love and loss. Decisions and consequences. The edge Cory walks is razor sharp and sky high, but she can’t look down. Not until she makes it to the other side.
“Everything was wrong and right, fucked up and perfect, all at the same time.”
This quote perfectly sums up Cory James’ circumstances in volume 2 of Staci Hart’s serial, Hardcore.
In Volume 1, Cory was able to keep her two worlds separate – as a thief, she does what she needs to do to support her sister, but her sister’s life is never tainted with her methods of assistance. But now that Jade has pulled Cory’s two worlds together by threatening her sister’s life and her new relationship with Van – a man with similar interests and someone she sees herself giving her heart to – Cory has to risk everything to protect her sister when the first thing that means is betraying Van and ending something that she wanted so much to have just for herself.
The biggest aspect at play in Volume 2 is the idea of loyalty. Cory’s allegiance is first and foremost to her sister, but she also has a bond with her group of thieving friends as well as to the man she barely knows but who sets her heart on fire. There’s a conflict of interest in where her loyalty lies because she can’t remain devoted to all of them – they are in direct opposition to each other with what Jade is blackmailing her into doing, so Cory has to make a choice and hope that she can live with the repercussions of her actions.
Staci Hart does a great job of showing readers Cory’s emotional upheaval as she figures out what the best course of action is; it’s a struggle to give up the one thing that she has ever really wanted for herself but she doesn’t see a way out and that’s destroying her.
The idea of someone choosing to do the wrong things for all the right reasons absolutely applies to Cory’s situation, and with where Volume 2 ends, it will be interesting to see the fallout from Cory’s decisions in the conclusion to her story.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom; she has three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife; even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.
From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

A Necessary Sin- Book 1 of The Sin Trilogy
Bleu MacAllister is consumed. A horrific childhood incident has caused every decision in her life to revolve around bringing a monster to justice. With years spent studying The Fellowship, an organized crime brotherhood of liars, thieves, and killers, Bleu will rely on her skills as a special agent to cut Thane Breckenridge off at the knees. But walking hand in hand with retribution means risking collateral damage, in the form of Breckenridge’s son Sinclair—until Sin becomes so much more than Bleu bargained for. She’s always known this undertaking would place her life in danger—she never imagined her heart would be as well.

Sinclair Breckenridge’s POV:
“I’m in the business of boundaries and limits. I’m aware of what mine are and how far I’m willing to go to get my job accomplished. It can include lying and sometimes stealing.” I wait a moment for driving the last nail into the coffin. “And perhaps the occasional killing.”
“How do you feel when you do those things?”
“Powerful.” I purposely choose that word because it’s the one she used to describe how she felt when she brought Duff to his knees. I want her to see just how similar we are.
She watches out the window for a minute before speaking again. “Do you like the way it feels?”
I can’t lie. I get a high from it. “Very much.”
Another minute passes. “Okay.”
What? “Just … okay?”
“Would you like me to be horrified?” she asks. “I can do that if it would make you feel better or improve your opinion of me.”
She’s no fucking Pollyanna. So I guess there’s no reason for her to pretend to be. “No. Okay works for me.”
I’m not sure if I should be disturbed by her lack of appall. It feels like a double standard to be shocked by an absence of dismay.
My God, has the pot met the kettle? “I wish I could get inside your head.”
“No, you don’t,” she says. “My mind is a dark place to be.”
I think I may have met the perfect woman. In her eyes, I’m not a monster at all.

An epic tale of revenge and love in a new romantic trilogy from the New York Times best-selling author of The Beauty Series.
Bleu MacAllister is in hiding less than three months when Sinclair Breckenridge discovers her whereabouts. Her former lover, the future leader of a criminal organization known as The Fellowship, resists the tug of his heart heartstrings in her direction. Instead, he opts to watch over his beloved from afar. And she has no idea. But Sin’s sacrifice is short-lived. His bonny lass is a hunted traitor. He fears Abram’s assassins are closing in, leaving him with one solution for saving Bleu–make her his wife. Marriage seems an easy fix for their dilemma but wedded bliss is brief when the couple finds trouble lying in wait beyond the realm of the brotherhood. Will the original revenge seeker find herself the object of collateral damage?

The Man I Am

~Rex~
As the wind whips around me, she dances violently, slapping the leather of my cut harshly against my T-shirt covered chest. A storm is brewing in the air around me as another one rages on inside my darkened soul.
The road before me is curvy. They call it Dead Man’s Trail. Riding a ledge is what it feels like. With the fine line of one wrong move, life and death are in the balance as the road winds through a mountain.
I am hours from home, and I still can’t bring myself to turn around and go back. I am not on a transport or on a run for the club. I am out alone, just me, my Harley, and the open night sky.
Not a star shines tonight as the humidity rises and the wind swirls through the thick air. A summer storm is in the midst. My mind races as the pipes on my bike scream out under the pressure of my speed.
“Be a man to be proud of. Carry your name—our name—with pride,” Pop’s voice echoes in my head.
A name. My name. Our name.
Tessie gave my boy—her son, my son, our son—my name. My fucking name.
Axel Devon Crews. Mini-me. One look and I fucking knew he was mine. My gut twists. Mine. My blood. My responsibility. My name. My fucking mirror image.
Throttle down, I push on faster, harder, needing to feel something slice through me besides the disappointments running through my mind. My life is officially at a crossroads, every mistake of my past now shoved in the forefront of my mind.
How did I get so lost? How have I become so consumed in things that don’t matter? When did I become so self-absorbed?
I would lay down my life to protect the very cut moving across my back right now. Yet, the woman who freely lay beneath me, giving her body, heart, and soul to me, I left without a glance back. She ripped her body—literally—to give life to my seed, and I did nothing more than wink, smile, and move on to the next woman. I was so focused on myself I missed the signs. I should have known. Hell, I should have been there.
Then, when the opportunity came for me to step up for her, did I do it? No. Shooter stepped in like I knew he would. He is a far better man than I am. Tessie deserves a man like him, not the mess that is me. No matter what life throws at them, he will be there to have her back, to be her security. He will be her strength and her calm within the storm. He will be her best friend and her lover. Everything that Tessie needs, wants, and damn sure deserves is found in the man I now proudly call my brother.
Sure, there was a time I wanted to rip him limb from limb. He went after what could have been mine. No, he didn’t go after her, not really, not if I keep it real with myself. I pushed him there. I sent him to her. I gave him what could have been my future. The only person to blame here is me. She needed me, and I tossed her off to him. My mistakes. My losses. I know, if I am ever given a chance to have something good again, I am not going to waste my opportunity.
When the clouds open up, the hot rain comes down, pelting me in the face, on my arms, and all my exposed skin. The road beneath me gets slick as I push on. Soft gravel gives way, and my back tire shifts under me. I don’t correct the movement. The delicate balance keeping me upright drops as does my bike, and my body hits the pavement hard. Gravel digs in even through the denim of my pants as the material rips. I feel my arms shred as my bike is no longer under my now broken body, only the unforgiving road.
Broken, shredded, a bloody mess of a man—that is what I am.
Pops’ voice is the last thing to sound through my head as I succumb to the blackness consuming me.
“The past is the past; the future is before you. Change is a power we all hold. Learning from your mistakes is growth, and it’s a necessary change. How you pick yourself up when you hit rock bottom will tell what kind of man you really are.”

By Any Other Name
(Forbidden Series Book One)
By USA TODAY Bestselling Author J.M. Darhower
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: February 23rd, 2015
A deadly rivalry.
Two families at war.
Nobody is safe, not even the innocent.
Especially the innocent.
Blood will be spilled.
Genevieve “Genna” Galante knows a thing or two about causing trouble. After all, it’s engrained in her DNA. As the only daughter of Primo Galante, notorious boss of the Galante crime family, her life is dictated by a certain set of rules… rules Genna was never very good at following.
Matteo “Matty” Barsanti never wanted anything to do with the family business, but as the first-born Barsanti son, certain things are expected of him. It’s his duty, according to his father, to help take down the enemy… even if that enemy means something to him.
A chance encounter on an elevator changes the course of lives, causing the biggest trouble of Genna’s young life. The only good Barsanti is a dead Barsanti. She’s heard it said time and time again. So what happens when she falls in love with one of them?
The story of star-crossed lovers caught in the middle of the biggest rivalry New York has ever seen, determined to make it… if only they can survive their parents’ feud.
The son pays for the father’s sins
Or, in the case of Matty Barsanti and Genna Galante, the main characters of J.M. Darhower’s newest release, By Any Other Name, the children suffer due to two men choosing power over friendship…money and status over a bond that should have united two families instead of creating a feud that can only be won with bloodshed and destruction.
By Any Other Name is a modern day mafia Romeo and Juliet. But it’s so much more than that. I have to admit…I was a bit hesitant to read it because I’m a high school English teacher who has taught Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for the last six years, four times a day, and I could only handle so much angst and flippant statements of suicide. Don’t get me wrong the idea of star crossed lovers and an all consuming love are intriguing concepts, but I guess I’m just a bit jaded with the whole concept due to the reactions of contemporary students to the play. I should have known, though, that J.M. Darhower would never ascribe to a cookie cutter interpretation of a canonical text; regardless of the kind of world she creates or the backdrop she uses for her texts, J.M. Darhower’s writing and her creation of multifaceted characters is what sets her apart from other authors, and it’s what makes her one of my must read authors.
The Prodigal Son and the Ice Princess…the Geeky Gangster and Medusa…Barsanti and Galante
These terms may all be ways to describe Matty and Genna, but they definitely don’t define who they are nor do they deter, especially from Matty’s perspective, their desire to be together, consequences be damned.
From the start, without knowing who each other truly is, their hearts speak to one another and their need to feel like they are more than their last names drives them to take risks that could very well get them killed. But it’s a risk they soon learn they’re willing to take because they give each other something that’s beyond boundaries and loyalties; it’s all consuming and it’s just theirs – well at least until all hell breaks loose once their relationship is found out.
Matty and Genna are extremely well developed characters whose very natures show how great the costs are when it comes to being a part of a Mafia family. Since he was 7 years old, Matty’s life has been filled with loss, and it’s tainted him to the life his father wants him to lead. He’s never been a true part of the business nor does he want to be, which further complicates the idea of family duty. Matty’s relationship with his mother is the driving force for his return and it puts him in unnerving situations, but through it all, he holds true to himself and remains the man who does what he wants because it’s what’s best for him.
Genna’s a bit of a loose cannon; she loves her family but feels stifled in the protective lifestyle that’s been dictated for her. She’s looking for warmth in her cold world, and she finds that in the arms of her sworn enemy. Her relationship with her brother is of absolute necessity to her, but she doesn’t want him as her babysitter; she wants him to be someone she can tell all of her secrets to, even the ones he might not want to hear.
By Any Other Name is a story about honor, obligation and sacrifice; it’s one that explores the true characteristics of love – love of family, love of self, and a perfect love in a wholly imperfect situation. It’s heart breaking, heart stopping, and heart melting, and it’s only the first book in a new series, which has be beyond excited to see where J.M. Darhower is going to take the Barsanti and Galante families.
A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

“A Roman Coke,” Genna mused. “What’s that?”
“It’s rum and Coke. We just call it a Roman Coke around here.”
“Because you’re Italian?”
“And because when you get drunk enough, it all just slurs together anyway.”
“Ah.” Genna picked hers up, motioning toward him with it. “So what are we drinking to?”
“Today.”
“Today?”
He nodded. “Right now, this moment. Let’s drink to it.”
Smiling, she clinked her glass with his. “Today, then.”
They threw them back at the same time. The liquor hit Genna’s taste buds and she grimaced, the vicious burn seeping down her throat and settling deep in her chest. “Ugh, is there even any Coke in this damn thing?”
Matty laughed, setting his empty glass down. “Just a splash.”
“I couldn’t tell.”
“That’s because I prefer it that way,” he responded. “Strong and rough, enough to leave a lingering ache. I like it to hurt just a bit.”
Oh good God. Those words sent a chill down Genna’s spine, one she couldn’t hide, as Matty waved for the waitress. Eyes never leaving Genna, he ordered another round of drinks.
“Another?” she asked, picking up the water to take another sip, this one to soothe the sting in her chest. “You said one drink.”
A sly smile curved his lips. “I like to keep them coming.”
“Is that right?”
“Absolutely.” Matty stood, leaning across the table, his lips near her ear. “Maybe you’ll let me show you later.”

Excerpt
“But that’s just the latest thing, the tip of the iceberg you’ve been creating for years. Shall we go through some of the other stuff?” Clayton clearly didn’t expect her to answer, because he picked up the magazines he’d brought from the desk and put them down in front of her. It was bad, but Raquel refused to hide despite how much she wanted to cringe. Rumors of hard partying, cocaine use—even though she had never used it—infidelity, orgies, stripping. And that was just the rumors. As a finale he had a list of the names she had acquired—bitch, whore, slut, jezebel, home wrecker, and her moniker, Man-Eater.
This is embarrassing, Raquel thought, seeing everything in black and white. It was something she hadn’t thought about; hell, half the time she cultivated it, but now she was left with regret. David was the final straw. He took her already fragile reputation and pummeled it to the ground. And what was his response when she asked him about it? “I just wanted a piece of the Man-Eater, but you didn’t even put out. Hope it was worth it.
” “That’s not all true,” she said. Great, Raquel, way to sound like an intelligent, self-assured woman.
He shook his head, looking at her as if she was crazy. “No one cares. I don’t know how many times I have to tell you that, but you need to get it through your thick skull. Your reputation is in the trash, and your job is on the rocks. You need me, which is why you called me. Because I am the best, and the only one who can repair your current reputation. You may not want to need me, but you do.”
Raquel reached for the pitcher full of water in the middle of the table, pouring a glass and taking a long drink, wishing it was tequila, while she composed herself. “What happens now?”
He raised his eyebrows, acknowledging that she ignored his statement. That was the best he was going to get from her, so he just needed to chill. “Right now? You are going to go the hell home and stay there. Don’t go out, because I can’t trust you to go anywhere. Even your local family restaurant isn’t safe when you’re around. Read over the contract,” he passed her a manila envelope that contained a bunch of paperwork, “carefully, because you are basically signing yourself over to me for the next six months. If you agree to the terms, then let me know and I will tell you where we go from here.”
She opened the folder, noticing how thick the contract was. “What is your strategy?”
“I’m not telling you before you agree. If you want it, you’ll sign it. And if, God forbid, anything else comes up, call me immediately.”

He wanted nothing at all…Until he found she had everything to give…Sunder lead singer and guitarist Sebastian Stone has everything—fans, fame, and fortune. He also has a heart full of bitterness and a reputation for a short-fused temper. But an outward reputation rarely reveals the true man inside. Facing assault charges after trying to protect his younger brother, Sebastian is sent to Savannah, Georgia to lie low until the dust settles in L.A.
Shea Bentley is beautiful, kind, and hiding from the very lifestyle Sebastian has always embraced.
When the mysterious, tattooed stranger begins hanging out at the bar where she works, Shea is quick to recognize he is nothing but trouble, but she’s helpless to the way her body lights up every time his intense gray eyes tangle with hers.
They both soon find themselves drowning in a sea of desire and passion that won’t let them up for air.
Sebastian knows firsthand secrets never die, and he’s not the only one who’s hiding them.
Loving someone always comes with a price. But will it be Shea’s past that costs them everything?
With a smile, I turned around, then froze when my sight registered the obscured figure leaning against the wall. A strangled gasp caught in my throat, and my heart took off at a sprint, blood pounding hard in my ears.
Pushing from the wall, he stepped from the shadows, his hands again stuffed deep in his pockets.
My heart rate only increased, the energy radiating from him almost as strong as the disappointment he’d left me with when he’d gone.
I pressed my hand to my chest to try to still the panic thundering against my ribs. “You scared me.”
“I’m sorry.” The words were soft. “That’s the last thing I want to do.”
But he did. I was scared of what he was capable of doing to me, the way I knew he held the power to trounce all over this hammering heart, to hold it in his hand and crush it into a million unrecognizable pieces.
“What are you doing here?” I asked on a shaky breath.
He looked to the sky and exhaled heavily, before he leveled his gaze back on me. “The same thing I’m doing every night, Shea. Thinking about you and wondering why the hell I can’t stop.”
My stomach flipped, and I gulped for air.
“What do you want from me?”
He laughed, lifted his elbows out to his sides in a helpless gesture without pulling his hands free. “Dinner?”
Nonsensical laughter shot from me. “At three in the morning?”
“Breakfast?” he amended, a coy smile pulling at his full, crooked lips.
Tingles spread across my skin, and I ran my hands up my bare arms. “I already told you I don’t have time for distractions.”
“Come on, Shea. It’s just food. Go out with me. Just tonight.”
Somehow I knew it was a lie, even though he wanted to believe it was true.
Nervously, I glanced to the back door all the while being inexplicably drawn to this man I didn’t even know. I knew I should make a break for it, run for the safety of my little world and give him no opportunity to rip it apart.
“I am hungry,” I found myself saying. After a long night of work, it was true. But it had nothing to do with the reason I was giving in.
Because I just wanted to…
I shook my head.
That was it. I just wanted. I wanted to be in his space. I wanted to understand why he had this pull on me. I wanted him.
Even though I’d never allow myself to have him.

Kick grinned and came towards me, his hands reaching for the button on my jeans. I slapped his hand away. “No,” I said firmly, giving him the evil eye. “You’ve had your fill this morning and I’m all out of orgasms.”
He smirked. “Baby, you are never out of orgasms.”
I raised my brows, trying to look stern. “I am today.”
Crossing his arms over his chest, he said, “So you’ve got a dentist appointment and then what?”
“Then I’ve got work. Why?”
“I’m just trying to figure out how long until I can get my dick out again.” When I smirked, he added, “You don’t seem to realise just what you do to me, Evie.”
I put my hand on my hip, settling in to hear this. “Tell me, Kick, what do I do to you?”
He uncrossed his arms and took the few strides separating us. “You cause an insatiable fuckin’ need in me that I’ve never experienced before. Even if I fucked you all day long, I’d still never get enough.”
Oh god.
My core clenched.
Maybe I did have more orgasms in me today.
He traced my lips and then cupped my cheek before kissing me. “I’m taking you to your appointment and then to work, and then I’m picking you up from work and taking you back to my house. Today we play my way. With my toys,” he growled, and I felt his growl all the way through my body.
