Obligation is the perfect title for Kai and Myla’s story, the second book in Aurora Rose Reynolds’ Underground Kings series. It paints the facade that the relationship that exists between Kai and Myla is one of duty…protection…a promise made and carried through on, and maybe on the surface that’s how it all started, but it is quite clear early on in the text that it’s so much more than a responsibility for both of them due to their shared pasts and their desire for a future together.

Kai is a complicated man; his commitment to his family’s business has molded him into a man who does what needs to be done without thinking of the repercussions, and to a certain degree, that extends to his fake marriage to Myla. Kia is a protector at his core, especially to the little girl he promised all those years ago to take care of when he found her upset, and despite the time that has elapsed, his vow holds true, and he’ll do whatever it takes to ensure Myla remains unscathed.

Myla’s has endured more than her fair share of loss and pain, and it has left her scarred and apprehensive, but she’s also a strong woman who refuses to be misused again. She understands that her arrangement with Kai is necessary, but she’s also struggling to be in it with him because of what she feels for him; Kai has the ability to destroy her even more if she doesn’t guard her heart and learn to see it for what it is.

But this obligatory marriage is anything but fake, and as Kai and Myla’s connection blossoms and grows, it’s clear to readers that the obligation doesn’t come from having to do the right thing – it comes from having to do what the heart clearly wants and needs to happen. It’s Kai and Myla’s souls that have them committed from the start, and once their heads catch up, the bond that forms is heartwarming, sensual, and forever.

Obligation is another great read from Aurora Rose Reynolds. Her books are one-click no brainers because she creates such fantastic alpha males who put themselves on the line day in and day out to protect those they love, and they make no qualms about what they have to do to get things done.  I do feel like Kai remains a bit of a mystery even at the end of the text, and I would have liked to understand more about his past and how he was molded to be the man who he is, but perhaps not knowing those things is what makes Kai even more intriguing to readers.

Kai and Myla’s story has a great mix of suspense, romance, payback, and steam, and I can’t wait for this series to continue.

“Everyone is looking for you.”

I turn my head, pulling my hair out of my face as I watch a boy I’ve never seen before climb up the stairs and into my tree house.

“Who are you?” I ask him as he sits across from me.

“Kai,” he smiles, looking around. He looks a lot different than the other kids I know. His hair is long, and his skin is a lot darker than mine. “Why are you hiding?”

I shrug and look away from him. Daddy was yelling earlier; he was so mad that he was turning red. Then Mommy started crying, and Daddy started yelling louder. I heard Mommy telling Daddy that he had to send me away. I don’t want to go away. I try to be good, but sometimes, I forget to listen.

“Why are you crying?”

I look up at him and wipe my face. “I’m scared,” I whisper, wiping my nose.

“Come on. I’ll protect you,” he says, holding his hand out to me.

Then my mommy calls my name again. I look at his hand, move Mr. Bear under my arm, and put my hand in his.

“Myla!” Mommy yells, running towards me.

I can tell she has been crying again.

“Where did you go?” Her hands grab my shoulders and she shakes me hard.

“It’s my fault. I asked her to show me the tree house,” Kai tells her.

She stops shaking me then looks at him. “You shouldn’t have done that. You knew we were looking for her,” she says angrily her head.

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking,” Kai says softly, putting his hands in his pockets and looking at the ground.

I look back at Mommy, and she shakes her head before grabbing my hand and pulling me with her. When I look over my shoulder at Kai, he smiles, making me smile back.

Love Hurts had my emotions all over the place from the very first page, and by the end of the text, I was emotionally strung out and mentally exhausted. The whiplash I got at the hands of Deacon Love and his Princess was enough to put a permanent kink in my neck. I was cursing both of them on numerous occasions, and I wanted to reach into my iPad and shake some sense into both of them.

This text epitomizes the word ANGST, which makes it an extremely frustrating read, but it also illustrates the flawless writing of Mandi Beck. She allows readers to feel every emotion that both Deacon and Frankie go through as they transition from best friends to lovers and the repercussions of that evolution in their relationship.

Nothing is easy when it comes to the kind of love that Deacon and Frankie share; it’s all consuming, which leads to an almost obsessive need to be together, but those same out of control feelings can also lead to catastrophe and alienate them just as easy as strengthen them. Every feeling is amplified when it comes to the power they have over each other, which means when one of them fucks up, the hurt is too much to bear, and there is a lot of messed up situations in Deacon and Frankie’s relationship as the book progresses.

Deacon Love is an extremely dynamic character; there are so many sides to his personality that I don’t think readers will ever get to the core of who he is. He’s quick tempered…passionate…fiery…unpredictable…filthy mouthed…cocky. He has a plethora of personality traits that are contradictory, which makes him flawed but lovable. His love for Frankie is both a blessing and a curse because it both heals and scars him, mostly due to his idiotic decisions and  actions, especially the ones he makes due to his male appendage. But through all of the missteps, there’s no denying the fact that he was made to love his Princess…now he just has to prove to Frankie that he’s worth the hurt.

Francesca “Frankie” De Rosa is just as much of a fighter as Deacon is, which is an absolute necessity due to the hellish events she faces in the text. It’s hard to truly wrap my head around all that makes Frankie who she is because readers don’t get a lot of her perspective, but what we do get points to a woman who is fierce and loyal to her soul.

There’s a lot at stake for Deacon and Frankie, both personally and as a couple, and with the way book one ended, the stakes are going to be even higher in book two, which, for me, means I’m going to have to take a Xanax to get through it;

Mandi Beck’s debut story is a beautiful crafted text that illustrates how much loving someone unequivocally can be both someone’s undoing and his/her redemption. It’s unclear at this point which category Deacon and Frankie will end up being in, but it is clear that neither are done fighting for and with each other.

Love hurts but it also heals…let’s hope it does the latter as Deacon and Frankie’s story continues.

Standing off to the side of the stage waiting for them to call my name, I search the crowd for Frankie. She’s here with Guy somewhere. Knowing him, they’re in the front row or close to it. Finally spotting them, I just watch and wait for her to feel me looking at her. I hadn’t been sure if she was going to be here tonight, since I didn’t see her after we got to the gym this morning. She had her class and I had my asshole brothers riding my ass for being late. I’d meant to ask her, but I’m so used to Frankie just being at these things anyways it slipped my mind. This relationship shit is fucking tricky. I’ve never been in one, so she has a lot to teach my slow ass. Letting my eyes travel over her, I can feel my cock getting heavy. Great, just what I fucking need before I drop trou in front of thousands of people. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been semi hard getting weighed in, but if I’m not careful, I’ll be sporting full wood. Adjusting myself in my track pants, I just stare at my girl. She’s changed out of her “Hitman” shirt. Her hair is down and wavy, the lights in the auditorium casting a halo over the long, platinum strands. She has on this low-cut, white top that I’m pretty sure is lace underneath a black blazer with the sleeves rolled up revealing her delicate wrists covered in bracelets. I can see that she has on jeans, but I can’t tell what she has on her feet, but I know I’m gonna want to fuck her in nothing but whatever they are later. All of a sudden I’ve developed a fucking shoe fetish. This train of thought isn’t helping with my hard on even a little bit. Making my way back up to her face, our eyes meet. I mouth, “You look hot as fuck,” winking at her.

The smile that spreads across her face is contagious, and before I know it, I’m standing there like an asshole, hand on my cock and a dopey fucking smile on my face. Shaking my head at myself, I chuckle and give her my, “You’re so getting fucked later” smirk before turning away to listen to what my pop and Sonny are saying to me.

When the emcee calls my name, the room explodes into applause, catcalls, and screaming. Smiling and waving as I step onto the stage with Mav, I nod at the men waiting to weigh me in and pose me with Tamasino for the pictures, completely ignoring the bikini-clad chicks lining the wall. I’ve fucked too many of the ring girls here to feel comfortable even making eye contact with any of them knowing Frankie’s in the same room. Standing to the side of the scale, I toe off my shoes and bend to yank off my socks, handing them to Mav before giving him my hat and “Just the Tip” shirt, leaving my pants for last since I’m still more than semi hard. Once I’m down to nothing but my black boxer briefs, my hard on, and my ink, I take a deep breath and step onto the scale. Being a heavyweight fighter, I have to stay under 265, which isn’t a problem for me, but it’s all still pretty nerve wracking.

“Two hundred and forty pounds,” the guy manning the scale announces.

Flexing once for the cameras, I hop off the scale and go over to where Mav is holding my clothes to wait on Tam to get weighed. Leaving my shirt off for the pictures with Tamasino, I look over to see Mav looking at me in amusement.

“What?”

“Way to rock out with your cock out, Deac.”

Yet, as I stood in the country bar in the middle of Gypsum, Idaho, I started to rethink my whole notion on the bar scene. What I was looking at was quite strange. All I could see was cowboy boots, wranglers, and granola type people. Lots of hats. I scanned the bar from the rickety wooden table I was perched at. This was one of those times where I knew heavy drinking was not a good idea so I slowly nursed my vodka cranberry and took in the crowd. The good ol’ boys were out in full force tonight. I mean, yes I was from Idaho, but I rarely left Boise, a large city. I was used to the more outdoorsy type, Boise was full of them, but all the cowboys I was seeing reminded me that I did in fact live in Idaho. As I took another drink of the watered down beverage, my eyes caught made contact with the last person I wanted to see.

The lumberjack.

Shit. Of all my luck, of course Sexy Lumberjack would be here. I was known for being on top of my game. I always had a witty comeback and I never let anything affect me. Or at least that was the image I put out there. Sexy lumberjack threw me off my game that morning a month ago. Not okay. I scrunched up my nose as I took him in as he stood there, a bright smile on his face as he twisted the bottled in his hands.

Fuck me. What was I supposed to do for four months in this barely-there town with all of these cowboys. And one lumberjack. I didn’t even bother to drink the rest of vodka cranberry. I threw a few singles on the table and grabbed my purse to head out of the bar. I was done with this night.

I was practically out the door when I heard, “Hey. Caleb’s girl.”

I stopped. His alluring soft, deep voice wasn’t anything new. I had heard plenty of men whisper pet names in my ear because they couldn’t remember my actual name. I smirked to myself and turned around to face him.

“Lumberjack,” I addressed him.

He raised a brow. “I’m not a lumberjack.”

My inspiration behind Being Jolene by Caitlin Kerry

When I start a story, or when I get an idea for one, usually there are three main points or themes that I want to explore. For Being Jolene, it was a few things. Jolene was a side character from my first book, Finding June, and I knew that her story would be next because in some ways, I didn’t really know Jolene and I wanted to know what made her tick. Here were the three things I focused on.

1. The first point was the idea of a HEA. Now, don’t worry there is a HEA in this book, but I wanted to explore the idea that maybe HEA isn’t just the house and the kids and norm. HEA can be complicated, they take work. Jolene struggles with wanting a different HEA than everyone else’s. I don’t want to say too much without spoiling the book, but that was one theme.
2. The Hero. Ty. Okay, so I live in Idaho and most of that time was spent in rural Idaho. There are a lot of cowboys here. I read about dreamy cowboys in books all the time. In real life? Yeah….a little bit different. And for me, a whole lot of no. I felt like there was a missing gap and that there are more than just the “western cowboy” in romance. For me, there is also the mountain man (outdoorsy type, lumberjack, ect) and that was my goal with Ty. And you guys, I swoon pretty hard over him. I can’t wait for you to meet Ty. He stole a little piece of my heart with his flannel and beard. (And he’s a freaking pilot! In the wilderness!)
3. Switching the stereotype was the third theme. You could throw a dart blind and find a book with an alpha male who sleeps around and is a pro in bed and the woman has no experience. I wanted to switch that a bit. In this, Jolene is known for short and hot romances with men. She is a serial dater. Ty, while he is experienced, is more on the conservative side and I loved watching these two deal with it. At times, it’s messy, but worth it in the end. I have to say, I think Ty is a bit of a feminist 😉

Those were my running ideas through Being Jolene and from there the story grew. I can’t wait for you to read Jolene and Ty’s story, coming to you February 19, 2015!

I love it when sex scenes aren’t just in a story for the hell of it. There’s a reason for them in Forbidden Nights, both in the storyline and in transforming the relationship of the main characters, and without the intensity of those scenes, readers wouldn’t truly understand that there’s a bond there that is so much more than sexual. In every sultry kiss, every intense glance, and every torrid movement, Nate and Casey express their devotion for one another, even when they aren’t willing or can’t express it with words.

I loved Casey! She is definitely not a delicate flower, but she does have a vulnerable side to her that has been placed there by men who are afraid of her take charge, alpha female attitude. But the fact that she knows what she wants and goes about getting it on her own without needing anyone’s help is exactly what will endear her to readers. And with Nate’s help, she does learn to give up control and let go, but she’s not programmed to be that way at all times, so finding a middle ground with Nate only empowers her more, which is exactly Nate’s agenda. I mean what man wouldn’t want to have a woman rock his world by taking charge in the bedroom every now and again?

I loved watching Nate work to forget about his past and move on, and the way Lauren illustrates the battle within him to give into his feelings but still protect his heart allows readers to sympathize with Nate’s situation but also bark at him to get his head out of his ass and see that Casey is nothing like his ex.

Forbidden Nights is a fantastic read that illustrates the freedom of letting go in a multitude of ways, focusing on the highs and lows that come with each liberating act. The witty banter and filthy mouthed conversations are great moments of foreplay that lead into some scorching sex scenes and the connection that Nate and Casey share can’t help but grow as they embark on their sexual lessons. Nate may be the teacher in the bedroom, but Casey is the one who teaches Nate more than he ever thought he would want to know.

As soon as Bryan and Kat left, Nate shut the door, then locked it. She glanced quickly behind her at the window that provided a view of the sea of rabid fans. The stadium shook with excitement. Cheers from the crowd vibrated throughout the house of Ruth. Nate stalked down the three steps separating them. When he reached her, a vein twitched in his neck. His mouth was a ruler-straight line. His jaw was set hard. His stare undressed her.

“I was wrong,” he said. Each word possessed a hard edge.

“Wrong about what?” Was he talking about the dress? Or about wanting to be her teacher? God, she prayed he wasn’t backing out.

“I was wrong about tonight’s lesson. It’s not spanking.”

“What is it?”

“It’s role-playing.” His voice was hot and rough. His dark eyes prowled over her body.

“What kind of role playing?” She didn’t even bother to hide her nerves, but the  nerves also excited her. Or maybe he was simply the one who excited her. It seemed whatever he did turned her on. The fact that he was standing here, a solid mass of muscle and strength, of extreme and utter sexiness, sent shivers across her skin. She drank him in: the wavy mess of his golden brown hair, the stubble lining his jaw, the exposed patch of skin on his chest where the top two buttons of his white shirt were undone. All of it, all of him, made her tremble with want.

He took one step closer, and reflexively she backed up so her spine hit the wall behind her. She was caged in, and against her better judgment, she liked it. She liked the fact that it was starkly quiet inside the suite, and that it was intensely noisy outside, a white noise that masked all that she was feeling.

“I’m going to be playing the role of the jealous lover,” he said, his voice still laced with the same frustration she’d picked up on earlier. Was he annoyed with her?

“What do you mean?”

“I’m the jealous lover who can’t stand the thought of his woman wearing a gorgeous, stunning, absolutely fucking breathtaking dress on a date with another man.”

A wild thrill rushed through her veins from his words and what they meant. “But I thought you didn’t like the dress?” she asked, coyly, playing along.

He lifted his hand and brushed the tips of his fingers against her wrist. She shuddered from that one subtle touch. Her body begged for more, and she was almost ashamed at how much desire flowed through her bloodstream right now. She hadn’t been completely aware of how very much she had wanted to see him tonight, of how truly disappointed she had been for the first eight innings that he wasn’t here by her side. Now that he was here, she wasn’t sure how she’d survived the game without him.

He brushed his fingers along her arm, across the crook of her elbow, and up to her shoulder. Goosebumps rose in his wake.

“I don’t like the dress if you wear it for another man,” he said, keeping his eyes locked on hers the whole time. “And sometimes that means I’m going to act like a dick and tell you I don’t like the dress at all.” He brought his hands to her hair and she wanted to cry out because it felt so fucking good to be touched by him like this, with hands that were both tender and completely possessive. He speared his fingers into her hair. “But what I really don’t like is the idea that another man might look at you in it, and want to touch you the way I touch you.”

He leaned into her neck, and pressed his lips against her skin. There was nothing gentle in the kiss. His lips were hot and angry, and she felt his teeth nip her skin. A sting of pain raced through her, but it was a good pain, a pain that made her long for more.

Chapter 1: Secrets

In the cool darkness of the semi-crowded bar, I study the glass in front of me and consider my journey, how many steps I’ve taken in the last two years, how far I’ve come. Memories of my old life fade like smoke in a glass. The shame that held me so tightly now dances at the edges of my mind like the whisper of a bad dream, a flicker of shadows that no longer make sense in my world.

Young women in shiny slip dresses twist and laugh on the dance floor, but instead of resentment, my lips curl into a smile. My old self—cynical, bitter, defeated—is a memory I have to work hard to recall. These days I could dance all night with them, but I’d rather spend my energy engaged in other activities.

The slim glass holds a pale amber liquid, and I can’t resist taking a sip. An involuntary wince pinches my eyes as I put it down. Seven and seven. Refreshing citrus dragged down by the heavy undertone of whiskey. So gross.

Sliding my palms over my thighs, I realize my outfit isn’t much different from those of the girls on the dance floor. The deep red silk is fitted at my waist, and drapes loosely over my torso. My long dark hair is swept over one shoulder revealing a thin spaghetti strap. I lightly touch the delicate gold chain around my neck leading to the floating heart pendant that sits between my collarbones, and light glances off the thick gold cuff on my wrist.

Unlike that night, I’m alone. My best friend Elaine is miles away with her new husband, most likely indulging in that blissful honeymoon period of early marriage. Make that, most certainly indulging. I know those two well.

No, I came by myself to the bar in Princeton after finishing my business with a client in town. My infant son is in Wilmington, spending the weekend with his grandmother. Studying my hands, I admire the deep blue sapphire ring on my finger, but I have no wedding band.

At thirty-two, I’m an unmarried mother of a beautiful little boy, and I wouldn’t change a thing… Yet. The tiny silver scar at my hairline reminds me of what a bad marriage looks like, and with my successful marketing business and the gorgeous cottage at the beach I own, I’m satisfied with my life. Calm, not desperate. I’ll take my next steps deliberately, with confidence.

All these thoughts preoccupy my mind when I blink up and catch him watching me from across the square-shaped bar. Blue eyes, strikingly blue because of the way they stand out beneath his dark brow, coupled with collar-length thick dark hair.

He’s massive, at least six-two, and elegantly dressed with a thick stainless watch on his wrist. I can spot his type a mile away—rich, powerful, accustomed to getting what he wants. I can’t deny the hum his gaze sets off under my skin. I know what he wants.

Catching my lip in my teeth to stop my grin, I also know what I want, and it’s no coincidence I happened to look up at that exact moment to meet his stare. Still, I’ll make him work for it.

He starts to move, his eyes never leaving mine. I don’t look away either. Thick cords of muscle ripple beneath the thin black sweater he wears as he glides past the oblivious patrons talking and laughing. Some are more animated than others, waving their arms and putting their drinks in peril.

Yellow lights hidden in the recesses above the bar illuminate rows of liquor bottles in all colors and shapes. Glasses hanging upside down above also catch the flickering light. It’s a raucous atmosphere, but this man and I are in our own secret place of longing and desire.

As he rounds the final corner, and I see him in full, my breath quickens. My eyes drift from his broad shoulders to his narrow waist, grey slacks and black shoes, then back up just as he reaches me. A close beard shadows his face, and the muscles low in my pelvis tighten at the thought of how it feels brushing the soft skin of my inner thighs…

There comes a point where everyone has to choose what they are going to surrender to, and for Finn Walker, the mysterious, laid back Aussie, all he’s been doing for years is surrendering to the past and all of its pain, regret, and what ifs. He’s kept himself closed off to almost everyone in the Nordic Lords Motorcycle Club, lying and hiding about his time in Australia and his upbringing.  It’s not part of his life that he’s willing to rehash because the scars are too deep and the memories are seared on his heart and his mind.

But Finn’s surrendered enough to the darkness, and it’s about time he lets in the light to help ease the torment he feels on a consistent basis, and what better way to break those shackles than a woman who has more purity and goodness inside of her than anyone he’s ever met, Meg McNeery. But Finn’s memories hold him hostage regardless of what Meg is willingly offering to Finn, and his abrasive treatment of both Meg and his son, Brayden, make it hard for her to see anything more happening between them but really amazing sex, and when it’s all said and done, that’s just not enough for Meg.

Finn’s going to have to decide if he’s going to continue to submit to the demons that plague him or let the one woman in who might just be worth surrendering to in a much more satisfying way.

Finn’s story is the one I’ve been waiting for…ever since meeting the quiet, behind the scenes Aussie, I’ve wanted to know his story, and man is his past the things nightmares are made of. He’s definitely a tortured soul who has himself so twisted up that he can’t see past the searing pain of everything he lost all those years ago. He’s so hot and cold with Meg and Brayden that, like Meg, I had whiplash trying to decipher all of the mixed messages and weary expressions.

I’m still not sure what I think about Meg, and I guess that’s because I didn’t feel like readers were truly given a complete view of who she is. We’ve always seen her as the woman Ryker vowed to protect, and it was hard to see her as herself through much of the story because even with getting her point of view, I never really grasped onto what made her tick, at least not completely. I understand she loves her son and would do anything to protect him, but as far as Meg, the woman, I’m still a bit perplexed.

Regardless of my need for a bit more character development, Point of Surrender and the entire Nordic Lords MC series is MUST READ. The storylines are full of suspense, steam, and angst, leaving readers hot and bothered in more ways than one. It’s a fantastic collection of biker stories that while deal with a bit of the darkness of a MC, it also moves beyond it and examines human nature and what people are willing to do to protect and claim the people who they love. I definitely recommend one-clicking this series and meeting the badass Nordic Lords bikers and their kickass old ladies!

“Hi.” I stood up off the bed as he started climbing through the window.

His eyes went wide when he saw me, causing him to momentarily lose his balance on the windowsill and go crashing to the floor. “God. Damn,” he cursed as he rose to his feet while taking in my new wardrobe. “You… I…um…” His hand went to his lip.

He was rooted in place only a few steps away, but his eyes traveled over every inch of my body and back again.

Till was speechless. I had never felt so empowered in my life.

“Are you okay?” I feigned concern as I slowly approached.

“Not even close,” he told my breasts, making me giggle.

After sliding a hand under the edge of his T-shirt, I raked a fingernail over each of his abs before dipping it into the waistband of his jeans.

“I’m sore today,” I announced, closing the distance between us. My breasts were pressed against him, but he still hadn’t even attempted to touch me yet. I had plans to remedy that.
