Slade and Samantha’s story continues…

Review

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Unbearable picks up right where Undescribable left off; Samantha’s mom just passed away, and she is left with a tremendous amount of guilt and regret for cutting off contact with her for the last five years.  Those feelings do quite a number on her; Sam doesn’t know how to cope, so she is a mess, and as much as Slade wants to help her, he feels like he is doing everything wrong because no matter how much he tries to comfort her and put her wants and needs before his, it doesn’t seem like he can do anything right in her eyes, and he blames himself completely.

“I hate that she thought she didn’t need me. I also hate that I believed that she didn’t need me. It’s more my fault than hers.”

Samantha has felt unloved for quite some time, so the fact that her mom actually did love her and wanted what is best for her makes Sam feel like a selfish jerk. No matter how many times she tells herself to remember her mother’s advice about living with no regrets and not to dwell on the past, she can’t seem to let go of feeling like she abandoned her mother and not the other way around.  Needless to say, Samantha’s sadness, anger, and frustration put a strain on her relationship with Slade, but this is where Slade steps up and proves his love to her over and over again.

On top of dealing with Sam’s mother’s death, Sam and Slade have to deal with his whorish past and an old childhood friend of Sam’s.  Regardless of how much he has changed because of his love for Samantha, they cannot escape reminders of who he used to be; Jessica, the woman he almost slept with before Sam called looking for Jax in Book 1, keeps sending visuals to Sam of Slade having sex with other women in hopes of breaking them up.  So, as Sam’s jealousy is brought out due to the pictures, Slade’s comes out because Tate, Sam’s best friend from childhood, returns to speak with Sam about her mother, and Tate’s plans to stick around continues to aggravate Slade to the point where he feels threatened by him.

“Can my love be enough to keep us together, when everything else seems to be falling apart?”

The first half of the book is definitely an uphill battle for Sam and Slade, but they remain committed to one another and seem to get back on track.

“‘Angel, you are my meaning to live and I promise to fight for us, no matter how hard our life gets.'”

Slade shines in Unbearable.  The womanizer is long gone, and no matter what is thrown his way, Slade never loses focus on his love for his Angel and his commitment to her. He definitely is a changed man, and Ms. Tessier does a fantastic job of showing what true love can do to someone.  Don’t get me wrong, Slade is by no means perfect; it wouldn’t be believable if he was, but even with his imperfections, he keeps fighting for Samantha even when, at times, it feels like she wants to give up.

Another great attribute about this book is its supporting cast.  Micah, Holly, Courtney, and Josh are even more present in this book than the last, and when the whole gang gets together, there is definitely not a dull moment.  Readers are also introduced to two new characters: Missy and Tate.  Missy sparks up an immediate friendship with the girls, despite the fact that she is younger than them, and Micah and Josh let Tate into the fold rather quickly. Tate is a great addition to the crew; he comes with his own set of secrets, and I can’t wait to see what he has to say in book three.

The best part of the text for me is the dual POV; Slade and Samantha’s voices are interchanged throughout the whole story, which makes it much clearer to witness everything that is taking place.  I definitely don’t mind one sided storytelling, but in a book filled with angst and drama, I find I enjoy it more if I can hear both sides and not just get the prejudicial remarks of the heroine.

I highly recommend Unbearable.  Because it is book 2 in a trilogy, the HEA has not been reached yet, but the book does not end with a relationship cliffhanger.  The ending DOES seem to indicate that more secrets will threaten to rip Samantha and Slade apart, but that’s a given when the story centers around two people with troubled pasts, and people waiting in the wings to mess it up for them. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

You definitely need to one-click this steamy, drama filled read!
