“Tomorrow is never a guarantee; live life to the fullest and never stop smiling.”
I read a lot of books. Some books I love because there is a great storyline and great characters; others I love because the way they are written draws me in and keeps me on my toes throughout the entire story. Still others, the rare gems, have all of the previous characteristics and then some. These texts resonant with me on a personal level; they draw tears from me not only in the sad moments but also in the triumphant ones. Beck by Harper Sloan is one of those texts. When I was finished with it, I wanted to start reading it again and experience once more all the emotions that it drew out of me. I wanted to be torn down and put back together just as Dee is in the story.
There are so many things about this book that I love. The first aspect is the structure of the text. Harper Sloan sets the book up in three parts; three separate entities that explain different pieces/parts of Dee’s life before and during her relationship with Beck. The titles of each section as well as their content explain all the ins and outs of what happened to Dee with her family as well the relationships/incidences that have left her damaged and have led her to build a fortress around her heart. Readers see Dee at her lowest points, attempting to dig her way out of the darkness with little success and then we see her slowly gaining momentum towards having a healthy relationship with Beck and letting her walls down. Finally, readers witness Dee believing in the man by her side and letting go of a past that had done so much damage to her life and relationships. Dee doesn’t become whole until the end of the story, so the book needs to be told in different phases of recovery or lack thereof.
Dee – after seeing her as a supporting character in both Axel and Cage, I was so ready to hear her story in Beck. I knew that there was a lot more going on behind those eyes of hers. She was so strong for Izzy, always fighting for her, but it never seemed like anyone was fighting for her….standing by her…until Beck. Dee’s story is not an easy one to read. The neglect…the abuse…the depression. Dee was a silent sufferer, and I knew her story was going to be a tough one to hear, but I wanted to hear it.
Beck – what an amazing man. His love for Dee knows no boundary. There are very few men who could stand by for two years and watch from the sidelines the woman who you love struggle to get out of her own head and let down her walls. But, he stays and he fights for Dee when she can’t fight for herself or for them.
Supporting characters/new characters – I can’t wait to hear more about Maddox, Emmy, Asher, and Chelcie. The way that the lives of the Corps Security men, their women, and their friends interconnect allow for multiple storylines to occur at the same time, which means there is always more to learn and experience. The great thing about this series is that readers can always stay in touch with the main characters from the previous stories and learn what’s up next for them.
For me, Beck is the best book in the series. I don’t know how Harper Sloan is going to top this one, but I can’t wait for her to try. This is a MUST read. If you love dynamic alpha males, badass women, steamy sex scenes, and dynamic storylines with a whole lot of drama/danger, this book and this series are definitely for you!
5 + poison apples!
