“Look in the mirror, Sophie.”

She tried to pull away but he held her firm. “Look. Tell me what you see.”

In Knight & Play, our heroine, Sophie Black, takes a job with alpha male Lucien Knight. Their attraction is instant, but Sophie is married, and even though she suspects her husband of cheating, her reserved nature keeps Lucien at bay – at least for a short time. What happens after that is a hot and heavy one week affair where Lucien strips Sophie of her inhibitions and shows her exactly what it means to consume a woman and take her to orgasmic heights.

Book One is all about sexual exploration. Lucien wants Sophie to experience every kinky side of sex that there is. He wants her laid out and bare no matter the location. Sophie gives her body fully to Lucien, and he shows her all that can be done to it with various parts of his body as well as toys. She gets an up close and personal tutorial of Sex 100 and all its many wonders.

Be warned: Sex consumes Knight and Play, but it fits the idea of Sophie and Lucien’s relationship at this point in the storyline. All it has been between them is sex, not intimacy…at times, Sophie may feel like there is more there, and there very well may be, but Lucien makes no promises. He has a dark past that is securely locked away, which provokes him to avoid attachments. So even though Lucien may feel something for Sophie, at this stage, he would never admit it. The cliffhanger at the end makes perfect sense because it leaves both of Sophie’s relationships in limbo, which is very much her state of mind – her indecision is evident as the first book ends.

Knight & Stay picks right up where Knight & Play left off. This is where the true story is told of Lucien and Sophie’s lives with and without each other. Both are damaged souls who have experienced loss and betrayal on a grand scale. Lucien feels he is incapable of love and so he never offers Sophie his heart, and he constantly tells her that they will never be anything long term. Ultimately, Sophie is in control; if she can’t deal with their purely physical relationship, she can choose to leave and never look back. But what Lucien doesn’t understand or won’t quite admit to is that their connection goes beyond pleasure. They are bond together by so much more, but they both will have to heal before they can offer one another more.

I felt much more connected to this book and characters, and it is because while the sex was still just as present, Lucien and Sophie’s lives and all of their baggage, thoughts, and emotions were brought out. Kitty French’s storytelling dominates this book. She gives us the missing puzzle pieces that made Lucien Knight the “Viking Sex God” that he is; readers were shown the loss and pain of his past that allowed us to see deeper into the man behind the façade.

The epilogue was fantastic! After all of the struggles that Sophie and Lucien had to endure throughout their time together to see them happy and together was such a great gift.

Knight & Day takes place five years after Knight & Stay. Sophie and Lucien are completely devoted to each other, and they are happy with their little family.  Sophie’s best friend, Kara, who has been a supporting character in books one and two, is now a business partner with Sophie in specialty boutiques featured in Lucien’s Gateway clubs. Their latest opening brings them to Ibiza to oversee the store’s opening.

Enter Dylan Day. Readers can tell from the onset of the book that Dylan has secrets and a past that he is running away from – even his name is made up. But Lucien trusts his gut and hires Dylan to manage his club. Dylan and Kara’s paths are bound to cross when they work right next door to each other. There is an instant spark between them, but Kara’s past has left her broken; she has zero trust in men after being left at the altar, so she does her best to stay clear of sexy Dylan Day. That plan doesn’t last very long though and soon enough, Kara’s risking her heart to be with Dylan. Soon, their nights of hot sex lead them to wanting more with each other, and Kara puts her faith in Dylan, trusting him despite the signs that he is not telling her everything about himself. But secrets never stay hidden for very long, and when Dylan’s come out, is Kara going to be able to forgive another man who has betrayed her?

This installment of the Knight series is much different than the first two. Not only does it center on a different couple, but it also focuses more on telling the love story of two people who are running away from pasts that have left them as incomplete selves. The steamy sex is there, but from the beginning, it seemed like more than pleasure. It’s a second chance love story, which is always emotional but uplifting at the same time. I’m glad that Kara got her story. She was instrumental in helping Sophia deal with all of the drama of her ex-husband and Lucien; she deserved her happily ever after as well. And, although I was completely satisfied with how Sophia and Lucien’s story ended in book two, I am happy Kitty French gave us further insight into their lives as a loving, committed couple. It was great to see their relationship drama free after everything that they had been through; I also loved the fact that Lucien developed a brotherly relationship with Dylan and Kara. Seeing a softer side of Lucien with Sophia and his little girl as well as his protective nature with Kara truly showed how Sophia helped to change him for the better. It’s hard to decide who’s the better book boyfriend – Lucien or Dylan – maybe I’ll take both;)
