Synopsis:
Mace Jordan was not the type of guy I expected to sweep me off my feet. I knew of the crowd he ran with, and they were bad news. But beyond that tough, biker exterior was a sweetheart, and one that treated me like his princess.
I liked being the good girl with the bad boy, but I never expected this. What I saw on his computer…I thought I knew him.
But I was wrong. So wrong…
If there was ever a bad time for me to fall for a chick it was now, but from the moment I saw Leeta, she had me. There was something special about her, and I had to have her. But I also had a job to do, and I couldn’t let her distract me from that. I couldn’t let her discover that side of me either. But she’s not stupid, and I know she’s getting close. God knows what she’ll do if she discovers the truth.
Or what she thinks is the truth.

Review:
Mace and Leeta…son of a criminal and a defender of justice…a couple who on paper couldn’t be more different, but together, they give each other everything that they need; the only problem is that Mace has never been completely honest with Leeta about his family, and those secrets threaten to destroy what Mace and Leeta have because Mace’s definition of justice and how to get is, is much different than Leeta’s.
As a prosecutor, Leeta sees the world as black and white…either a person is guilty or innocent, and due to her job, she tends to see the negative in people more so than the positive. But with Mace, she doesn’t. With a father and brother both incarcerated, it’s not a stretch to think that Mace has probably been mixed up in illegal activities, but she doesn’t push. She loves him and is willing to wait to hear about his past. But when Leeta finds out what Mace has been up to and how deep the betrayal is, will she be able to think as Mace’s girlfriend or the lawyer who prosecutes people who disobey the law?
Provoke is on the darker side of Missy Johnson’s works. It’s pretty amazing how much of a multifaceted writer Missy Johnson is. No two books she writes are the same, which is refreshing for romance readers who like to shake things up a bit. It definitely has an interesting premise, and because it is told from both Mace and Leeta’s point of views, readers are able to see both sides of the betrayal/situation they are faced with. It’s a fairly quick read that has a few plot twists and some steam…it definitely keeps readers on their toes, wondering how Mace is going to get out of the mess he put both himself and Leeta in. Unfortunately, though, I felt like it was missing a bit of character development, and I wanted the storyline to go deeper so that I could truly understand everything that happened. I wasn’t quite clear on how it all worked out in the end because I was left with unanswered questions. I also had a problem with how accepting Leeta is, after only a short amount of time, of Mace’s betrayal. For someone so rooted in the truth and seeing facts as objectively as possible, it seemed a bit of a stretch for her to give in so quickly. But that’s just my opinion, and it doesn’t mean that readers won’t see things differently, and even though this text might not have connected with me, I have read several of Missy’s other texts, and I will continue to read her work because she’s a great storyteller who is willing to step outside the box.
