Zeth Mayfair is pretty much the very last thing I need in my life. And yet with every breath I take he becomes more engrained in every aspect of it:
He has a key to my house.
He knows where I work.
He dumped his strange, mentally traumatized housemate on my doorstep and has driven off into the sunset in search of my missing sister.
I want to forget him. Want to change the locks and blot out his face, scourge his very name from my memory. The problem is that I also need him. I need him more than I need air to breath, and I can’t be without him now.
He owns me.
He torments me.
He’s fractured me.
Fracture is the perfect follow-up to Deviant. It dives a bit deeper into both Zeth and Lacey’s past, so readers have a clearer understanding of how they are connected and what molded Zeth to be the man that he is. The sexual chemistry between Sloane and Zeth is still hot as hell, but regardless of their desire for each other, neither is willing to admit just how deep the other has gotten underneath their skin. They are each other’s greatest weakness, and if they’re not careful, that fact is going to destroy them because there are people lurking about who are more than happy to bring them both down.
Callie Hart chose perfect titles for her Blood & Roses series. Deviant focuses on Sloane’s unusual behavior due to Zeth’s influence. The straight laced doctor becomes a bit of a risk taker under Zeth’s tutelage, and Zeth, in his own right, is the ultimate deviant. In book two, Sloane’s careful lifestyle as well as Zeth’s controlled one slowly begin to fracture when the stakes are risen and neither knows who to trust or turn to when things go from complicated to out of control.
For me, the best part of Fracture is watching Sloane’s growth as a character. At the beginning of the series, she’s fairly weak, but as the costs get greater, she steps up and draws on strength that I didn’t think she possessed. No matter how much her head is telling her to stay away from Zeth, she also knows that getting out of her comfort zone and taking risks may be the only way she’s ever going to see her sister again. Even though she gives in to Zeth and his sexual proclivities, she gains the upper hand a time or two in those situations as well. She’s definitely stronger than either Pippa or Zeth thinks she is, which will be a great asset heading into the shit storm that I’m sure will occur in book three.
Zeth has to be one of the greatest bad guys around. He exudes control and dominance. In his kind of business, there is no time to let your guard down because if you do so then you’re dead. Zeth understands that idea and is hell bent on paying back those who have double crossed him. Along those same lines, he’s definitely not used to someone turning the tables on him, and the fact that Sloane does in book two makes Zeth wonder if what he feels for her may be more than just really hot sex. The fact that he can’t seem to let her go speaks volumes about his feelings for Sloane.
Fracture had my attention from the first word and kept it until the last. It’s a great second book because it provides some of the back story that readers didn’t get in book one, and it also sets up the turning point that will come in book three. As good as Deviant was, Fracture is even better. The sex is hotter; the suspense is more intense, and the action moves quicker. Callie Hart knows how to write a text that is captivating and intense for both the characters in the story and the readers. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us in book three!
