People think I’m a douche.

And maybe I am.

I use most people.

It’s what I know.

But if I love you,

I’d die for you.

I just don’t know that I’m worth loving.

Handsome, privileged bad boy Zac Moore has always played by his own rules – at school, in business, with women. He’s rewritten the rules to suit his own needs and his needs are all that matter.

Serious and focused family friend Liliana Castillo has one goal. Leave the pre-Med program at Yale to help people in developing nations.

As their paths cross and uncross, a tale of love, agony, betrayal and growth is woven, transforming two people who’ve hidden from relationships and love.

This is a stand-alone novel.

Review

Bad Son Rising is the perfect title for Zac Moore’s book because whether or not readers have been with him since his antics and growth in Julie A. Richman’s Searching Moore series or have just been introduced to him in this stand alone novel, he definitely defines the term bad boy with the way he uses girls for his own gratification and manipulates and deceives any way that he can. But the text also allows readers to see past the man whose moral compass is a bit skewed and get to know the man who is beyond gifted with intelligence and creativity…who is a fierce friend regardless of the situation…who tackles problems with a kind of calmness and ease that can’t be taught…who wants to be capable of truly loving someone. It’s not hard to see that Zac’s childhood/teen years messed him up in ways that even he may not truly understand, but of all the things that Julie A. Richman teaches her readers about Zac, the one that stands out the most is that he’s so much more than his bad decisions or his learned philosophy of used and be used.

The best way to describe Zac throughout the course of his story is a work in progress. He’s working against his past, his messed up perception of relationships and sex, and the misconceptions of who he is based on his previous actions.  None of those are easy to overcome and the reality of his situation causes Zac to take two steps forward and two steps back on numerous occasions. But there is one experience that changes who Zac is at his core and allows him to finally beat down the judgments against him and rise up to be the man he’s meant to be and that is his time in the Congo with Liliana Castillo. At first, Lily’s the elusive woman who Zac can’t charm out of her dress, but as time goes on, she almost becomes his compass, guiding him down a path that he never thought he would take, but one he will never regret heading towards, even if, at times, the pain it causes him is more than he can take. Zac’s redemption is not instantaneous; in fact, there are many times he struggles to make the right decisions, and even when he does make the correct ones, there’s still a price to be paid – one that affects not only himself but the woman that he grows to love.

Zac’s story is one that covers a span of years that both help him to grow and regress as he deals with the fallout of his choices during college, his volunteer time, and his return to school to finish his degree. Throughout that time, my reactions to him ranged from disgust to heartbreak to elation. Julie A. Richman takes a broken boy with a huge chip on his shoulder and a lot of angst in his heart and transforms him into a man who changes by leaps and bounds due to his love for a woman, his experience in the Congo, and the life altering decisions he makes due to those events. She shows the power of forgiveness and the love of family and friends; Zac would not have made it to where he does at the end of Bad Son Rising without them both, which clearly illustrates their necessity in people’s lives.

What I also love about Zac’s story are the supportive females in his life. His stepmother, Mia, and his best friend, Liv, as well as Lily are definitely a huge part of Zac’s growth as a human being, and readers get to watch that play out throughout the course of the text.

At the end of the text, Zac may not have completely shed his bad boy persona, but he doesn’t necessarily need to…in fact, a little bad boy never hurts anyone;)

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

“Lils, I don’t know that I’m great boyfriend material. I’m used to being a dick. It’s what I know.” He was hoping she’d say something, but she didn’t. “But I would want it to be different with you. You’re not a drive-by. And I don’t really know how to do the other stuff. But you make me want it. You make me want to try.”

Sweeping her hair to one side, he buried his face in her neck.

Finally, she spoke, “Are you saying this to me because we’re stuck here? Because if you are, don’t. I don’t want a one night stand with you, Zac.”

Letting his teeth graze the soft skin of her neck, he felt her shiver, “I don’t want a one night stand with you either and with my track record I know that may be hard to believe. And of course the one girl I want to believe it, doesn’t.” Pulling his mouth away from her delicious tasting neck, he rested his chin on her shoulder.

“Ok, I’ve got nothing to lose here,” he began. “The weekend we met, all I wanted to do was make you notice me,” he laughed, “and you didn’t even know that I was alive. I wanted to make you smile, Lils. Isn’t that crazy. I just wanted to make you smile.”

Turning herself fully within the circle of his arm, she was on her knees facing him, “You wanted to make me smile?”

He nodded.

“I was so miserable. I just wanted to be over here. I didn’t want to be back at Yale.” Surprising him, she placed her hands on his cheeks, “And you wanted to make me smile?”

He nodded again.

And there it was, beautiful and elusive, and Zac could feel his emotions rising dangerously close to the surface. Liliana Castillo had a heart stopping smile and the only thing he could do was return it with one of his own.
