Ryder Richardson knows how to cover his pain and the demons that possess him by using his body for release – that’s the only connection anyone will ever get from him, so his career as, Kyle King, gay porn star for Back Door Studios fits his wants and needs perfectly. As Kyle, he’s the ultimate entertainer; no one sees behind the mask he wears as he fucks on camera as well as off because he has the role of Kyle down pat. There’s no thinking behind it; he’s in control – he says who; he says when, and he says for how long. Ryder gains power in this performance, and since that is what was taken away from him in his past, the idea of commanding his audience, his sexual partners, and ultimately his life is what he needs to keep the past at bay and not allow it to overwhelm him again.
But then Mason George enters Ryder’s life and the mask begins to slip. Mason comes to Back Door Studios desperate; he needs a job, and although porn is not an industry he ever thought he would be a part of, it’s where his life took him, so he embraces this new phase of his life, at least for now. Mason is the calm that Ryder so desperately needs in his life, but having feelings for someone is a foreign concept for Ryder because for so long, he’s kept all feelings out of his life; it’s too dangerous…it causes too much damage, and he’s already damaged enough. But Mason wants to know the Ryder that no one else sees – the vulnerable man who knows how to enjoy life and not put on a show all the time for everyone else. When Ryder allows Mason to live with him for a while, so Mason can get back on his feet, they develop an easy friendship that quickly becomes something more, but it’s exactly that more that Ryder doesn’t want, and he fights it tooth and nail despite Ryder’s growing feelings for Mason. Through it all, Mason stays true to what he wants and fights for Ryder, even when Ryder refuses to fight for himself. But will it be enough? Will Ryder see how truly amazing the right kind of love can be, or will he continue down the path that he’s on – one where he plays a role and never allows anyone close enough to know who he really is and what he’s had to endure?
I loved Ryder in Being Sawyer Knight; he’s an upfront, tell it like it is kind of guy, but readers could also see that there was so much more behind his mask. He helped Sawyer with his honesty, which is interesting to me, because Ryder couldn’t face his own truths – in fact, he ran as far away from them as he could, especially when Mason started to get too close. I’m glad readers were able to get Ryder and Mason’s story from both of their perspectives because it helps to understand their personal struggles and how they truly feel about each other; there’s a fine line to be walked in declaring their feelings, especially for Mason because Ryder is so skittish of any declaration that he knows he lose him before he even really has him.
Taming Ryder is a heartbreaking and uplifting story about one man’s struggles to not be defined by his past…to redefine his life on his terms with the help of his makeshift family and the man who desperately wants to be the one that Ryder feels connected to enough to show the real Ryder not the one he portrays on and off camera to everyone else. And, while I agree that Ryder needed some kind of taming, he needed to achieve that on his own by working through his past and opening up for a future out of the darkness. Ryder didn’t need to be tamed by Mason; he needed to be saved by him, and Ryder needed to be strong enough to allow that to happen no matter how scared he was. I can’t wait to experience the real Ryder Richardson as the Souls of the Knight series continues! Bring on Matt’s story.

“Say you’ll go on a date with me?”
“A date? Me?” An involuntary smile crept onto my face at the ridiculous notion. “That’s never going to happen, Mase. I don’t date. Ever.”
“Why? Why won’t you let anyone in?”
“Oh come on, that’s taking things a bit far.”
“How so? I’m interested to know why you won’t date, why you won’t let anyone get close to you.”
“I never said I wouldn’t let anyone get close to me. You’re making this out to be far more serious than it is.”
“Then go on a date with me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to be tied down. I like the life I have and I’m not going to fuck it up by having to justify myself to someone else.”
“Justify what? I’m not a stranger. I know who you are and what you do. Your life would still be the same.”
“It wouldn’t. Relationships are so…serious. Complicated. People expect trust, and monogamy, and for you to share shit. I haven’t got time for that.”
“Stop referring to me as ‘people’. I’m not ‘people’, I’m me. Of course I want you to share shit, how else am I supposed to get to know you? As for monogamy, I assume you’re referring to porn. In which case, I’m a porn model too, Ry. I might not have chosen it for the same reasons as you but I still get it. It’s a job. A job I’d never ask or expect you to quit. What you do on camera isn’t what you shared with me that night here, and I know you know that as well as I do. And trust? That needs to be earned. I’m asking for a date, Ryder. Not marriage.”
I let out a long breath in the form of a deep, confused sigh. Much to my surprise, I was almost considering the idea, until his hand that was still on my leg squeezed my knee gently and my heart leapt into my throat. I couldn’t control it. I couldn’t control the way my pulse raced or my dick swelled when he touched me and I hated that. I swore no one would ever have control over me and so I wasn’t about to give it to Mason.
“I said no,” I snapped firmly. “And I also think it’s time you looked for your own place.”
Mason’s back abruptly stiffened. His face paled and his jaw dropped slightly open.
“If that’s what you want, I’ll look into it tomorrow.”
“It is what I want. This was only supposed to be temporary, remember?”
“Sure,” he nodded, his voice wavering. “I’m sorry I’ve upset you,” he added, standing from the chair. My lips parted to say something, but when I realised I didn’t have a fucking clue what I should say, they closed again. Mason gave me one last glance, his eyebrows narrowing as if he were in pain. Then he nodded once and turned for his room, leaving me alone with tears stinging the back of my eyes and my fist itching to punch myself in my worthless fucking face.
