About ROWDY
The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Marked Men series continues with this sizzling, sexy story of love, heartbreak, fate, and second chances.
After the only girl he ever loved told him that he would never be enough, Rowdy St. James knocked the Texas dust off his boots and set out to live up to his nickname. A good ol’ boy looking for good times and good friends, Rowdy refuses to take anything too seriously, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Burned by love once, he isn’t going to let himself trust a woman again. But that’s before his new co-worker arrives, a ghost from the past who’s suddenly making him question every lesson he ever learned.
Salem Cruz grew up in house with too many rules and too little fun—a world of unhappiness she couldn’t wait to forget. But one nice thing from childhood has stayed with her; the memory of the sweet, blue-eyed boy next door who’d been head over heels in love with her little sister.
Now, fate and an old friend have brought her and Rowdy together, and Salem is determined to show him that once upon a time he picked the wrong sister. A mission that is working perfectly—until the one person that ties them together appears, threatening to tear them apart for good.
REVIEW
The one – that one special person who means everything to you. The person you compare everyone else to and no one measures up to because there’s too many firsts experienced with him/her. The first person you gave your heart to…the first person you committed your life to…the first person you couldn’t see living without. But what happens when that’s exactly what you have to do because the person you thought was your forever…the one to be with you to experience all the highs and lows in life leaves you alone because he/she doesn’t feel the same way?
When Rowdy St. James’ one left him with a broken heart, he decided to never allow himself to feel that kind of love again. Everyone Rowdy ever loved either let him down or left him alone, and he refuses to give someone that kind of power again. For 10 years, this kind of living works for Rowdy; it makes him happy and allows him to enjoy what life has to offer without getting in too deep and risking his heart being crushed. But that all changes when Salem Cruz, a girl from his past – one of the people responsible for his fractured outlook, storms into his life, looking to make amends and claim what she’s also wanted – him.
To Salem, Rowdy is the blue-eyed boy who helped her to be okay with who she was, despite her father’s disapproval. They were best friends – each other’s champions – the one person who wouldn’t let them down because they understood one another so well. But when Salem leaves in order to get out from underneath her father’s tyrannical ways, she doesn’t truly understand the shattered boy she leaves behind, and now that boy is a gorgeous, tattooed man who looks at her with nothing but disdain and hatred. What follows after Salem and Rowdy’s less than stellar reunion is a push and pull battle that leaves both of them confused, heartbroken, and craving each other. But if Rowdy can’t let go of the past and Salem’s betrayal, he’ll never see what’s right in front of him – a woman who he’s shared a plethora of firsts with, and if he’s lucky, a lifetime of lasts.
Rowdy has been a bit of a mystery to readers since the beginning of Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series. We know that he’s a fierce and loyal friend who takes care of his own, and just like his other tattooed best friends, he’s never without a woman warming his bed, but that’s about all the insight provided until now. In Rowdy, readers get the perspective we need to see what makes Rowdy who he is and what’s defined him all these years later. At face value, he seems to be the life of the party, always looking for a good time and not over thinking anything because it’s a path he’s been down before and refuses to go down again. But as soon as Salem walks back into his life, Rowdy’s façade shatters, and the young man whose heart was broken not only by Salem but by her sister as well turns into a bitter, frustrated, and angry man who is unwilling to let Salem explain anything to help ease the ache that they both feel.
But despite Rowdy’s accusatory glares and cold shoulder attitude, Salem’s driven to clear the air with him over their complicated past and move on to a future that she hopes will bring them together not only as friends but as a hell of a lot more. Salem’s had to fight for everything since she left her hometown at 18 years old, so she knows how to be stubborn and not give up until she gets what she wants; she gave up her gypsy ways for a reason, and she’ll be damned if she allows Rowdy to shut her out. Her tenacity overpowers Rowdy’s stubbornness and once that happens, it becomes clear to both of them that they’re each other’s perfect match. Now, Salem and Rowdy just need to get over their fears; for Salem, it’s the thought of not being who he truly wants, and for Rowdy, it’s the nagging feeling that she’s going to run again and leave him brokenhearted. With a past as intricately woven as theirs is, it makes sense that these doubts would consume their thoughts, but if they can’t get passed them, they will miss out on what has the potential to be the best thing to ever happen to them.
Rowdy is a fantastic addition to Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series. Jay’s writing continues to draw me in due to the first person perspectives and multi-layered plotlines. Each of her heroes is an alpha male to the extreme, and he protects what’s his regardless of the battle. Jay creates each marked man’s perfect match in her heroines – the one woman who compliments his attributes and knows how to handle him at all times. Rowdy and Salem share a past that could have destroyed any possible future, but even though it takes a bit, they finally realize that what they give to each other is something that no one else can, and despite the doubts and insecurities that they experience throughout the course of their story, there isn’t anything major standing in the way of them being together besides themselves, which readers will soon realize is more than enough.
Rowdy and Salem’s story is a definite must read that will leave readers impatiently waiting for Asa’s story because Jay’s writing is just that good!
