I don’t know quite what to make of the storyline and main characters in Missy Johnson’s new serial Resist. I can’t quite wrap my brain around why Charlotte Lucas would be willing to endure the kind of treatment she receives from Jaxon Murphy as his newest contracted woman. There’s definitely a mysterious game of cat and mouse occurring between Charlotte and Jaxon since Charlotte took up residency in Jaxon’s house. I understand Charlotte’s ultimate goal at accepting the position – why not feel sexually pleased while sneaking around trying to get the inside scope, but the end game never normally turns out the way it’s meant to when the challenge begins. Charlotte seems to be underestimating Jaxon’s prowess and the depths he’s willing to go to, to secure what he wants. He’s a man of action both in the bedroom and the boardroom, and he makes no qualms about the underhanded ways he goes about getting what he already deems his. He uses women, money – anything at his disposable, and he feels no remorse in doing so. I’m not sure what that means for Charlotte as the story progresses, especially with how the first volume ended.
The old saying resistance is futile seems fitting for Missy Johnson’s latest release, and it’s clear that Charlotte is going to get a firsthand look at how useless her pleas and refusals will be in dealing with a man like Jaxxon Murphy.
Resist does a good job of setting up the arrangements that Jaxxon sets up with his women as well as Charlotte’s agenda in applying for her new role, but there’s still a lot of information left to be revealed; the prologue leaves readers wondering how dark Jaxxon truly is and what Charlotte has gotten herself into by going undercover as one of Jaxxon’s new toys.
Readers won’t be able to resist this new series because it’s a puzzle that they’re going to want to put together as the volumes continue.

Missy lives in a small town in Central Victoria with her husband, and her confused pets (a dog who think she’s a cat, a cat who thinks he’s a dog…you get the picture).
When she’s not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.
