Review
All readers know that Aurora Rose Reynolds knows how to write sexy as hell alpha males who are domineering, a bit obsessive, and completely possessive. The male hero, Nolan, in her newest release, Justified, definitely has alpha like tendencies, but to me, his actions and attitude border more on being an asshole than being an alpha, which may be due to his profession as a lawyer or his need for constant control, especially when it comes to his obsession with Chloe. Or, it may just be because that’s who he is. I didn’t feel like I really received a full view of everything that made Nolan who he was today, which left me feeling a bit conflicted and made it hard to like him.
Because Justified is such a quick read, it’s hard to establish a connection with Nolan or change one’s perceptions of him. Simply put, if readers get a negative vibe from his over the top tendencies then it’s going to be hard to change that view before the story is over, and unfortunately, that’s exactly how I felt. I wanted to like Nolan; I kept trying to find the silver lining in his personality, but just when I thought he was breaking through, he says or does something that leaves me just as confused as I was about him at the beginning.
I’m also a bit on the fence as to how I feel about Chloe. It’s hard to really form a solid opinion of her because readers don’t get her perspective and we see her on a regular basis bend to Nolan’s every command, rarely seeing her as an independent person.
It’s not that I hated Justified. I guess I’m just used to meatier storylines and bossy but also sweet alpha males from Reynolds, and I felt like this book didn’t hit that mark. I will tell you though that the sex is out of this world hot…Nolan is definitely at expert at using his filthy mouth and body to give pleasure to the woman he loves. There’s also a bit of suspense mixed in as well, which is sure to catch readers’ attention.
Will my so-so feelings about Justified turn me off of any future books by Aurora Rose Reynolds – ABSOLUTELY NOT! She’s a phenomenal writer who has created amazing characters and storylines, and she will continue to do so. The fact that she openly admits that Justified is going to have a split readership because of Nolan shows me that she’s willing to take risks even if readers not necessarily agree with them because she’s staying true to herself as a writer, and I LOVE that!
