Book Summary
How much is a life worth?
Mariana Rodriguez is the eldest daughter of a Colombian drug lord. Growing up in Villanueva, Colombia, she has never wanted for anything. Private schools, a lavish lifestyle, and the safety of the Cartel that her father works for.
At nineteen, she’s got her entire life mapped out, and what a good life it’s going to be: graduate from college, move to America, and finally be free from the stifling grip of the Cartel.
Only, her father messes up. A shipment of cocaine – a very large, very valuable shipment – is seized by the authorities whilst under his care and he becomes liable for the debt. Half a million dollars worth of cocaine.
Half a million dollars he does not have.
But he has a daughter, a very smart one, a daughter who would give up her very existence and offer herself as payment for her father’s sins, to ensure her family survives.
But falling in love with the man who owned her wasn’t part of the plan …
Review
Lili St. Germain’s Gypsy Brothers series has been on my radar ever since the first book released, and while I purchased all seven books, I have yet to read a single word due to my blogging commitments, so when Cartel was offered up for review as part of a blog tour, I knew I needed to make time in my schedule and enter the notoriously dark, gritty, and deadly world of this treacherous motorcycle club, and boy am I glad I did.
Going in to Cartel, all I ever heard was how much of a bastard Dornan Ross was and how so many readers hoped that he would burn in hell. To say that I was intrigued by his character is an understatement, so heading into a story about the younger Dornan left me wondering if I was going to gain insight in to this deadly and unremorseful man and what turned him into the brutal monster that he becomes in the Gypsy Brothers series. I firmly believe that there is always a reason for people delving into darkness and it seems to me that the crux of Dornan’s issues – the manipulator, if you will, of his madness is his father, Emilio Ross – the Kingpin of the South American drug cartel and a lecherous man who has no value for human life except for how it will benefit his wealth. Emilio rules his dark kingdom with a dictator’s hand and anyone who gets in his way is dealt with in the most vile and base ways possible in order to send a message to everyone that he is not someone to be fucked with because he will make you pay. That iron fist rule is what lands Mariana in Emilio’s grasp and what ultimately collides her world with Dornan’s and leads to the entanglements that will cause their lives to spiral out of control.
‘Do with me what you will.’
This is Mariana’s response when she sacrifices herself in exchange for her father’s debt, not fully understanding what that sacrifice entails but knowing that her life is no longer her own. She becomes a piece of Emilio Ross’ property to do with what he will, forcing her into an upfront view of the maniacal dealings of monstrous criminals who are as inhumane as they come. Mariana doesn’t belong in this dark and deadly world, but she is there nonetheless, so she’ll have to learn to cope and endure if she wants to survive the brutality of the lifestyle she now finds herself ensconced in.
Dornan is Mariana’s monstrous hero; for reasons he truly doesn’t understand, she captivates him…her spirit calls to him and he craves her body. Getting Mariana away from his father is a dangerous endeavor; Dornan’s walking a fine line even in a destructive world where rules don’t apply. In Cartel, Dornan and Mariana head down a path where there’s no turning back from, and it’s too soon for either of them to truly understand what they’ve set in motion by giving into their passions for each other.
Cartel is a dark and gritty read that allows readers insight into the complexity of the Gypsy Brothers MC and the harsh reality that awaits anyone who crosses paths with this gang of monsters and a henchman who controls everything around him. Lili St. Germain does a fantastic job of showing the conflicted feelings that both Dornan and Mariana struggle with as they delve into their forbidden relationship. I didn’t think that I would enjoy the switch between first and third person, but the further into the story I went, the more I understood Germain’s reasons for altering the point of view, and it shapes the story in such a way that makes me want to get inside Emilio and Dornan’s heads to truly understand their corrupted minds and why they’ve become who they are.
I cannot wait for Kingpin to see how it all starts to unravel for all the players in Cartel.

His eyes lit up at that as his gaze travelled across my chest and wandered down to the most private of places. I was clothed and covered in the right places, but in front of him, I felt completely naked. The feeling was unnerving and delicious all at once, which only confused me further.
So he’s sexy as hell. It doesn’t matter. He’s the enemy.
‘It doesn’t matter anyway,’ I added hastily. ‘I’ve got a nasty case of the clap. Better not rape me or your pico might fall off.’ I thrust my chin out as I used the Spanish term for ‘small dick’, smirking at the Gypsy Brother as his warm hands continued to roam every bit of bare flesh on my arms.
Dornan laughed at my admission, a throaty noise full of gravel and insolence that made me increasingly unsteady on my feet.
‘I’m not going to rape you,’ he replied, amusement dancing in his dark eyes. ‘And you don’t have the clap. So don’t use that one on me.’
