My Review

Desolation ~

a state of complete emptiness or destruction

anguished misery or loneliness

Both of these definitions epitomize the characters in Ker Dukey’s Desolate. Set 18 years after the life changing ending of Empathy, Ryan, Blake, Melody, and Cereus Braxton all struggle with the darkness that threatens to consume their lives yet again when Ryan gets released from the mental hospital and wreaks havoc on all their lives.

Psychological warfare – that’s the best way to describe the events that take place in Desolate for both the characters and the readers.

Manipulation is the strongest asset that Ryan holds, and he easily engineers a series of actions that deceive and destroy everyone he encounters. Ryan is a self professed soulless monster who has never been broken because he embraces his coldness. He surrounds himself with puppets – those who bend to his every whim and feed his cravings for pain and blood. I have to say that Ker does a marvelous job of putting readers inside Ryan’s head, making  us see who he is at his core with brilliant characterization. He has such a complex mind, and through the course of the text in his own words, we see the psychopath in all of his glory. It’s disturbing how intrigued I was by Ryan’s character. Ker never alters Ryan’s true nature; he may bend and stretch because of his relationship with Cereus, but he’s still the disturbed and callous murderer he was at the beginning of the series.

Melody may have been Blake’s redeemer but that doesn’t mean that his darkness has been completely extinguished. It’s still below the surface, and it threatens to resurrect when Ryan is released, forcing his life to spiral into misery because his fear for Melody and Cereus’ safety alienates him from them, creating a divide that may ruin everything he’s worked towards all those years ago.

Melody’s desolation comes in the form of loneliness – created by her consistent nightmares, her misgiving about Blake due to his dishonesty, and the strain in her relationship with her daughter. She continues to be a strong heroine in book two, but readers can tell that she’s reached her breaking point, and the events at the end of the book threaten to destroy all forward progress she’s made in every aspect of her life.

Ker Dukey is the queen of dark erotic thrillers, and Desolate solidifies her reign. Her writing is just as manipulative as Ryan is because the twisted path the story takes has readers falling prey to her words and succumbing to all that she wants us to feel about the characters she has so masterfully crafted. At its most basest level, humanity can still be shown in many forms and every single type is manifested in Desolate.

Desolate is a brilliant read from the mind of one hell of a creative writer. I can only imagine what’s next – whatever it is…I’ll be ready for another twisted and fucked up ride.

Meet Ker DukeyKer Dukey
I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active… I would want to change the script.I would watch films and think of ways they could of improved the story if they took another direction so i thought it best that i tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.
You can find me on Facebook where i love interacting with my readers.
