Review

MacKenzie doesn’t do reckless – at least when it comes to her heart. Growing up in foster care and taking care of herself for most of her life, she’s used to being alone. It’s safer that way because there’s no chance of getting hurt; she can rely on herself and keep all emotions at bay. But Kenzie’s carefully constructed life gets turned upside down by a wild fighter who makes her want to connect with him in a way that she has never allowed herself to want before.

Ian knows a thing or two about letting it all hang out in the ring as an MMA fighter and as a bit of a ladies’ man. Ian’s first priority, though, is his fighting career, putting that ahead of everything, even his lust for Kenzie. Their “almost” night together was thwarted due to Ian’s training, but that doesn’t mean their attraction to each other fizzled out; in fact, it has only intensified regardless of how hard they both try to fight it.

Reckless Love is a great title for Kenzie and Ian’s book because it speaks to their inability to see what’s clearly right in front of them. Kenzie and Ian want each other; they’re desperate for that connection. Kenzie feels safe and protected by Ian’s side, and Ian feels complete in a way that he never realized he would. The rashness they display in terms of their feelings for one another is not in a way most would think because they don’t give into their attraction easily. Their hasty acts actually keep them at arm’s length – both thinking they’re not what the other person wants. Kenzie doesn’t want to be a distraction or a burden even though she desperately wants to be wanted and cared for by Ian.

Kenzie and Ian’s relationship is a slow burn, taking two steps forward and one step back on multiple occasions throughout the story. It’s a bit frustrating at times to witness how hesitant both of them are to dive into what they so desperately want and need, but Kendall Ryan makes it clear why the reluctance is there. Getting both Kenzie and Ian’s perspectives also provides necessary insight into the choices made and gives readers hope that the next reckless decision they make will be succumbing to overwhelming feelings for each other.

“So, it’s true then?”

My breathing stopped. “What’s true?” I asked cautiously.

“That you don’t have sex before a big fight.” Her look was so innocent and hopeful, yet it still took me a second to figure out why she was asking this.

“Yes,” I finally answered. Her cute little frame seemed to relax a little, making me feel—once again—like a total dick. She didn’t know I paid Sara; she was talking about something completely different, about the night we almost hooked up. The night I told her I couldn’t because I had a fight the next day.

She chewed at the inside of her cheek a moment, maybe considering what I’d just said. Shit, that meant she thought I’d just made that up to get rid of her. Not fucking likely. Putting the brakes on that night had been the hardest thing I’d ever done.

“So,” she said as she looked up at me innocently through her eyelashes. “What does that do? For a fighter, I mean.”

I chuckled. “You mean besides frustrate the hell out of us?”

She smiled—thank fucking goodness—then nodded for me to continue.

“You know that stereotype that most guys are boneheaded cave dwellers driven by instinct?”

“Is it considered a stereotype if it’s true?” she said, then giggled.

God, she had a great laugh.

I nodded. “That’s what I was getting at. On some very basic level, we fight in order to survive and procreate.”

She scrunched up her nose, making her look super cute. “But wouldn’t you fight better then? If you have sex, then you have someone to fight for, right?”

Her hand went up to mine, which was still resting on her shoulder. She absentmindedly played with my fingers until she noticed I was watching her, and realized what she’d been doing. She let her hand drop.

I shook my head. “We fight to procreate. Once we’ve had sex, we’ve done the job and have no reason to fight.”

“Hmm.” She nodded. “So I guess now that you aren’t fighting for a while, you’re free to take care of business.” Her gaze drifted down my body.
