New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett goes for a hat trick with the latest romance in a sexy series about cool-as-ice hockey players and the women heating up their lives.

Warning: The following contains spoilers from a cliffhanger in Garrett.

Rising star Zack Grantham has been stuck in a downward spiral of grief that has put his career on hold. Back on the road with the Carolina Cold Fury, still crippled by emotional baggage, and now a single dad, he’s in need of some serious help with his son. But while the nerdy new nanny wins his son’s heart, Zack isn’t sure he’s ready for a woman’s touch—even after getting a glimpse of the killer curves she’s hiding under those baggy clothes.

Kate Francis usually keeps men like Zack at a distance. Though his athlete’s body is honed to perfection, he refuses to move on with his life—and besides, he’s her boss. Still, the sparks between them are undeniable, tempting Kate to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. But before she makes a power play for Zack’s wounded heart, Kate will have to open him up again and show him that love is worth the fight.

Review

Zack Grantham had it all – a beautiful woman who loved him, a flourishing hockey career, and a son who had him wrapped around his little finger. But in a blink of an eye – he’s a single father trying to come back from an injury and live through the guilt and regret that consumes him on a daily basis.

Since Gina’s death, Zack lives in a constant state of numbness, simply existing…going through the motions all the while making sure his son, Ben, is taken care of, and one step to ensure that happens is hiring a nanny to stay with Ben when Zack’s on the road for hockey.

Little does Zack know, though, that the day Kate Francis walks into his and Ben’s life is the day they both start to live again…start to feel something other than pain, grief, and shame. But it’s also the day Zack’s attraction to Kate ignites and it’s too much to resist even if his need for Kate to dull the numbness threatens to undo him even further.

Kate has to be one of my most favorite heroines of all time. She owns her quirkiness and doesn’t pretend to be someone that she’s not for anyone. She loves with her whole heart and gives fully of herself regardless of how big or small the task. Right from the start, she understands Zack’s need for distance and hot/cold demeanor. Kate’s an incredibly strong person who tries to put a positive spin on any situation and she doesn’t back down from a challenge, even one as big as Zack Grantham.

I knew going into Zack’s story that it was going to be a struggle for him to move on…to cope with the loss of Gina and the regrets he has over not giving her everything, and Sawyer Bennett does a fantastic job of illustrating Zack’s demons. He has a lot to work through and regardless of how much he might want to move on with Kate because she seems to be the missing piece he’s been searching for, it’s a difficult situation for all of those involved. How can it not seem like a betrayal to Gina to want something more with Kate – that’s why Kate and Zack’s arrangement makes sense to him, but even he knows, there’s something more there – it’s just if he’s willing to accept it.

I floved everything about Zack and Kate’s story. Zack’s struggles to move on and let go of his shame and guilt are realistically portrayed, and I love that Kate never strays very far from his or Ben’s side.

Ryker’s up next and I can’t wait to see what Sawyer has in store for him and his leading lady!
