Synopsis
Baseball isn’t supposed to be a game of life and death…
The summer that Chase Stern entered my life, I was seventeen. The daughter of a legend, the Yankees were my family, their stadium my home, their dugout my workplace. My focus was on the game. Chase … he started out as a distraction. A distraction with sex appeal poured into every inch of his six foot frame. A distraction who played like a god and partied like a devil.
I tried to stay away. I couldn’t.
Then, the team started losing.
Women started dying.
And everything in my world broke apart.

Review
Moonshot is more than a forbidden/second chance love story…it’s more than a murder mystery…it’s more than a homage to America’s pastime.
It’s all of those things and so much more because Alessandra Torre’s storytelling doesn’t fit into only one genre or subcategory. Her writing is unconventional because she willingly takes her readers to the edge of what society deems appropriate…of what’s right and what’s wrong…of the difference between truths and lies…of the boundaries that people cross in order to soothe their souls and feel complete.
The worlds that Torre constructs are not black and white; in fact, they are consumed with gray areas that may not make sense or even be condoned by most, but that’s not what matters – what matters is that Torre steps up to the plate and time and time again knocks it out of the park, getting her moonshot, because she’s one of those rare writers who keep stories fresh with multifaceted characters and layered plot lines.
A relationship between Tyler Rollins and Chase Stern shouldn’t make sense: not only is there a 5 year age difference but Chase is a bad boy who never thinks of the repercussions of his actions until after they’ve occurred. A teammate’s daughter is supposed to be untouchable, especially for someone like Chase who has already burned some bridges due to his extra curricular activities. On paper, nothing about Tyler and Chase as a couple works, but because that’s not how life is, they would rather risk the fallout of people finding out about them than not give into a bond that saves/grounds them, even though going in “spikes first” ends up destroying more than just their hearts in the process.
Along with Tyler and Chase’s intense love affair, there’s immense adoration at play for the New York Yankees. Tyler bleeds pinstripes, and she loves every part of being an intricate member of the club. She’s more than just the daughter of the best reliever; she’s more than a ball girl; she’s a big part of the pride of the Yankees. So when Yankee wins seem to become a matter of life and death, Tyler and all members of the team put their hearts and souls into ensuring a victory even if it means facing a past that Ty’s never quite let go of or confronted.
It’s clear from Tyler and Chase’s first encounter that they are each other’s moonshot…that what they feel for one another is rare and overwhelming, but what’s also quite obvious from the start is that damning the repercussions and diving in full force regardless of who gets hurt or what the end game turns out to be can upend not just relationships, but careers and even lives, which means that going for the long ball needs to be worth it.
What I love most about Alessandra Torre’s stories is that they are in no way predictable. Because Torre blends romance, suspense, steam, and angst into all of her story lines, readers are consumed by all that is occurring, and with the multiple perspectives, we are allowed to see the situation from all sides, even though some are only glimpses, which leaves us guessing as to how everything will end up and for that matter, if there will be a happy ending for the hero and heroine when chaos seems to be the only thing that remains untouched throughout the many dilemmas the main characters face.
