In the struggle for power, control, and money, it’s a dog eat dog world, meaning anything goes and blood doesn’t mean anything when it comes to getting ahead. It’s a dirty business when brother is pitted against brother and the war between them is not only spurned on by their father, but it seems to be that his biggest achievement is to see how devious and corrupt his sons can be in order to get what they want, which so happens to be on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Talk about a FUCKED UP family – the Brandons definitely show their true colors when the gloves come off and an intense fight full of secrets, lies, double-dealings, and corruption determines who will rule the Brandon Empire and who will be out on their asses with no way back in.

Hard Rules, the first book in Lisa Renee Jones’ new series Dirty Money, illustrates just how duplicitous people can be and the fact that regardless of what people say and how people act, it’s always a front…a facade that hides their true agenda, which is attempting to find their opponents’ weaknesses and working to exploit them.

There are hard rules when it comes to the world of business, but it appears that the Brandons, excluding, at least for some of the story, Shane Brandon that getting their hands dirty and working the grey area to their advantage has set them up for either a big payoff or a significant downward spiral, and as Shane investigates all of his father and brother’s corrupt activities, he begins to understand that the only way to beat them is to join them in this cat and mouse game, but there’s one player in all of this that seems to be a wildcard and even when the first book concludes, it’s still unclear if Emily will be an asset to Shane’s cause or the person whose past and present actions destroys any chance of claiming the Brandon Empire for himself and putting it back on the right path.

I’m not quite sure what to make of Emily; her secrets and lies haven’t been exposed yet, but it is clear that her situation is dire, and she seems to have brought all of her baggage to Shane’s doorstep when he has more than enough of his own.

The biggest idea that I’ve come away with from the events that occur in Hard Rules is that every single aspect of Shane and Emily’s lives is complicated and that complexity both ignites and destroys the connection they have and the relationship they could have if only they could trust each other. It seems as if both Shane and Emily have given up significant parts of their lives in order to right wrongs and protect themselves from corruption and power plays, but at the same time, some of their moves have actually further ensconced them into dirty deals and insecurities that could end up wreaking havoc not only in business but also in pleasure.
