Conflicted in the depth of her feelings for bad boy Gavin Kingsley, lonely librarian Emma Bell knows he’s all wrong for her—yet the heart wants what it wants.
But if she gives into his dark, erotic desires will she lose herself completely?
Passion, drama and suspense combine in the highly-anticipated conclusion to Emma Bell’s love affair with the alpha and enigmatic Kingsley brothers. Secrets will be exposed, sides will be chosen, and nothing will ever be the same.
This is book two in the series, following Dirty Little Secret.
I’m not usually a big fan of love triangles, especially ones that include brothers vying for the affection of a woman, but I understand why Kendall Ryan felt that Emma Bell needed to struggle to choose between Gavin and Cooper Kingsley, given her past abuse at the hands of her boyfriend as well as her suppressed sexual desires, and while Gavin and Cooper do struggle to see past their respective feelings for Emma, causing strain on their relationship, Ryan makes it clear, early on, that there really wasn’t much deliberation because as much as Cooper is the safer bet…the one who will treat her like a princess, her body doesn’t crave him nor does her heart feel anything but friendship for the youngest Kingsley brother.
The nature of the Kingsley brothers’ company and those they employ and do business with become a major point of contention in Dirty Little Promise and while Emma can rationalize almost all aspects of Forbidden Desires, there are people and situations at play behind-the-scenes that cause strain on what Gavin and Emma are building, but as Gavin works to prove himself to Emma and take care of the issues causing not only his company but his personal life a considerable amount of bad press and frustration, readers are able to witness the ways Emma’s love has changed Gavin and how Gavin has allowed Emma to experience the kinkier and dirtier side of sex and feel empowered instead of abused.
Gavin and Emma are interesting characters whose pasts definitely play into their present actions and attitudes, and while they have both been damaged and broken by what happened to them at the hands of other people, it’s clear that their hearts and souls can be mended as long as they remain open and honest when it comes to what they need from each other.
I really liked how Ryan handled the Gavin/Emma/Cooper situation, not making the second part of their story drag out Emma’s decision because, in my mind, that had already been decided long before Emma vocalized her choice. What Dirty Little Promises focuses on are the secrets and truths that Gavin has yet to share with Emma, some explaining his past relationship and some exposing what he truly needs from her when it comes to their sexual connection.
I enjoyed all the dirty, suspenseful, and dramatic parts of Dirty Little Promise, and while I do feel like the resolution occurred too quickly and left a few questions unanswered, overall, the conclusion of Gavin and Emma’s duet revealed Gavin’s secrets and focused on developing and solidifying the connection that they felt from their first interaction.
4.5 Poison Apples
The start to a sexy new series from New York Times bestselling author, Kendall Ryan…
She’s much too innocent for me, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting the sweet, young librarian. I’m dominating and possessive, and my control streak runs a mile wide.
The way she looks at me—like I’m one of the heroes in the books she loves, like I’m broken, and she wants to be the one to piece me back together—it only complicates things further. I’m nobody’s hero.
But there’s no denying my tragic past reads like one of her favorite literary classics. It’s raw. Visceral. Captivating. And together, we’re a perfect mess.
How am I expected to resist when the sexual sparks zap between us and set me on fire? The need to control, and claim her force my walls to come tumbling down, but when she learns my dirty little secret, will my world come crashing down with it?
