“911. What is your emergency?”

Every night, Zara Llewelyn picks up the phone and assists people in distress. House fires. Assault. Motor vehicle accidents. Home invasions…

Between the hours of six and two, she is the answer to a thousand cries for help. But when the payphone outside Zara’s apartment building mysteriously begins ringing night after night, the very last thing she wants to do is pick it up. And yet, she can’t seem to help herself…

Pasha Rivin’s trying to outrun fate. He’s been running from it for years now, but escape isn’t in his cards. As the oldest son of the oldest Roma family in the country, he’s not just a member of a proud and fiercely traditional clan. He is their reluctant king…and now he’s expected to find a wife.

The fiery redhead that shows up on his doorstep, following a trail of breadcrumbs, hunting for a missing little boy, is the last person Pasha’s mother has in mind, however.

She’s an outsider, an intruder, and as far as his family are concerned, she’s not welcome on their land, let alone in their king’s bed.

Pasha has never allowed his destiny to stand in the way of what he wants, however. And he’s never wanted anything more than he wants the girl with the burning green eyes.

Zara Llewelyn picked up the phone and learned a secret.

Falling in love has never been so dangerous…

My Review

Pasha Rivin’s future was already written before he was born; as the oldest son in the Roma family, history, tradition, and responsibility dictate the man he’s supposed to be, and as much as he wants to choose his own path…make his own way, the weight of his last name…the weight of the kingdom that he’s destined to rule refuses to allow him to abdicate his throne, and even though Pasha was shunned by his family for three years, allowing him to be someone more than the heir apparent, the ties that bind him to his family will always pull him back in, especially when his destiny allows him to meet the woman of his dreams…the one who just might make accepting his fate worth everything that comes with ruling his family’s kingdom.

For the Roma family, though, Zara Llewelyn is an outsider and unworthy of standing next to the Roma King. But the kind of connection that Zara and Pasha share – one that was established in their dreams many years ago – is not something they’ll give up without a fight, which is a good thing since that’s exactly what seems to be heading their way.

There is a bevy of information to absorb and unravel the further Callie Hart takes her readers into Pasha and Zara’s story, which means that it’s important to understand the hero and heroine’s past, their backgrounds, and the reasons behind their thoughts and their actions. So while it’s clear that these two characters share a strong connection, what seems to be more important in book one is setting the stage for what’s to come and illustrating why it’s going to be incredibly difficult for Pasha to rule and still keep his chosen queen at his side.

The fated bond that Pasha and Zara seem to have is shrouded in mystery, and it’s that part of the plot line that intrigues me the most, and while I know there is danger and darkness to come that could be a huge obstacle for, I also feel like these two are fighters, meaning that Pasha’s alpha male tendencies and Zara’s sassy and sympathetic nature give them more than a fighting chance to make this destined path their own.

4.5 Poison Apples
