*Warrior Undone is a stand alone spin-off from the Vincent and Eve series. This is a full length novel.

My Review

In Warrior Undone, Jessica Ruben realistically illustrates the damaging effects of PTSD and the emotionally agonizing torment a person must endure when his demons hold more power than his rational thoughts, wreaking havoc on his psyche and making it feel impossible to escape the darkness that consumes him daily.

Slade McCormack spent ten years as a Navy SEAL, experiencing the most hellacious and horrific scenes known to man and due to the events overseas, his untreated PTSD and his ways of coping with his demons are only making things worse. To the point that it’s starting to interfere in his daily life and his job – one that relies on him being on point and in control at all times.

Lauren Amini does not appear to be a woman who could handle the shit Slade has going on inside; in fact, because he won’t allow himself to unload some of his burden onto her shoulders, she’s left in the dark, and it’s that unknown factor that both pulls her in and pushes her away. Lauren wants her own happily ever after, and she’s holding out for love…for commitment…for a connection that has nothing to do with bank accounts or expensive gifts, and she feels that bond with Slade, but his unwillingness seems to be an insurmountable obstacle – one she works diligently to overcome, but it’s not in her power alone to do so.

According to Slade, he is no one’s savior; shit, he can’t even save himself from the flashbacks and nightmares that plague him. He’s struggling through life one day at a time, self-medicating with prescription drugs, alcohol, and an endless string of one night stands. He feels like he has nothing to offer a good girl like Lauren except for a few nights of hot sex, but that doesn’t stop her from seeing him as her protector – the person who saved her life when she couldn’t do it herself – and that means something to her and if she had her way, it would mean everything to her, but Slade’s a bit of a loose cannon and it seems like even the smallest things set him off, making their so-called friendship/relationship both volatile and comforting.

It’s not easy to have feelings for a broken man…it’s even harder to fall in love with a guy who only sees his demons wreaking havoc on his life, but

love is a powerful healer…as long as both people are willing to let it in and even though Slade doesn’t feel he deserves Lauren…doesn’t want to be a burden on her…she is still everything he wants and in my opinion needs in order to find his way out of the darkness and back into the light.

I have to be honest…Warrior Undone put my head and my heart through the wringer. I was annoyed with both Slade and Lauren throughout their story, and it didn’t matter that I intellectually understood that they were both struggling to figure out their shit, the emotional rollercoaster ride they took me on made we want to scream and rage at them to get their acts together and see what’s right in front of them…but I guess it was their journey and the fact that it took them a lot of ups and downs as well as highs and lows to come to a resolution proves who they are and what they mean to each other probably better than anything.
