I haven’t read a lot of rockstar romances where both the hero and the heroine are in the music industry, so I was excited to see what A.L. Jackson had in store for her newest main characters in Catch Me When I Fall.

Broken souls seem to be Jackson’s go-to heroes and heroines and Royce and Emily fit into this category of characters in a multitude of ways, but while it’s clear that these two are fighting demons from both the past and the present, it’s unclear, especially when it comes to Royce, just how caught up in the overwhelming deluge of emotions that push him forward, with a singular focus – one that Emily, somehow, fits into, but remains unclear for much of their story.

I loved the dynamic that Jackson created between Royce and Emily, partly because he has more of a bad boy rocker vibe while she’s more sugary sweet but also because these two bare so much weight on their shoulders, from their respective pasts, their emotions, and their future goals that it’s more than obvious that they are both strong and driven in reaching what they want, but, what, Emily doesn’t quite grasp, undoubtedly, because Royce does his best to suppress all of his motives for wanting her band to sign with his record company and how that works with his plan of revenge.

The push and pull between Royce and Emily plays out within the pages of their story in a way that illustrates just how much they want one another, but also the cost that comes with giving into those feelings. Add in a healthy dose of angst and quite a bit of suspense and Catch Me When I Fall will have readers theorizing and hypothesizing exactly how things between the hero and heroine will end up and what the cost will be to both of them.

One aspect of Jackson’s writing style and her voice that are consistently demonstrated through all of her stories is that she understands the emotional depths of human beings…she understands that there’s a gray area amidst the black and white, that doesn’t force one-sided observations or actions. She has a way of getting to the heart of situations and of people and illustrating the personal and professional struggles of her characters, in a way that doesn’t offer one clear answer to how they should proceed but a full overview of what has led these characters to where they are now and where they hope to be in the near future.

Every single book I read by A.L. Jackson takes my emotions on one heck of a tumultuous journey and while I may not understand why the characters make the choices and take the actions that they do, I’m always left empowered with their strength, their tenacity, and their ability to love, despite everyone and everything trying to tear them down.
