First loves are always difficult to forget, and in Corinne Michaels’ newest release, Return to Us, that very idea is explored when Jessica Walker returns home to Willow Creek Valley and has to face Grayson Parkerson, the one she let go when she left their small town to experience all the world had to offer. And now she’s back and needs to coexist, knowing the way he treats her and keeps his walls up is completely justified.
Boy does Corinne Michaels know how to bring the feels. And with the dynamics involved in book one of her new series, the angst is necessary, and even though it keeps readers’ stomachs in knots, waiting to see if the hero and heroine will be able to work through, comes to terms with, heal from and move past, getting to that point in the story where things appear to be getting better is worth it.
In a lot of ways, I understand why she left all those years ago, getting out of her small town and doing the things that she’s only imagined doing. She wanted a clean break…she wanted to allow her first love to move on because she truly didn’t plan on coming back to Willow Creek Valley. And while breaking Grayson’s heart and giving him up so easily seems cold and unforgivable, in order to move forward, hopefully together, it needs to happen, which means things will get worse and more tense between these two until they meet somewhere in the middle.
Second-chance romances are some of my favorite stories because despite the time and even the distance that the hero and heroine have spent apart, there’s an established relationship, based on a foundation of love, which means there’s a starting point – one that allows hope to be felt.
Grayson and Jessica’s story is one of regret, forgiveness, true love, and second chances and the fact that Grayson is a single-dad with one cute little girl is an added bonus in this emotionally-charged contemporary romance.
