ā€œYou don’t belong.ā€

No words whispered in anger have ever rung more true.

They’re the Kings of Brayshaw with the world at their feet, destined for greatness and in need of control.

I’m the girl from the ghetto with nothing to offer and as defiant as they come.

They say it doesn’t matter, that I’m one of them now, and nothing could ever change that. Not even me, should I dare try.

But they’re wrong.

They underestimate how far I’ll go to protect them.

Trouble is coming…and they have no idea

My Review

Holy shit! I just finished the follow-up to Boys of Brayshaw High, Trouble at Brayshaw High, by Meagan Brandy, and I am completely blown away! I absolutely ADORED book two, and I would go so far as to say that it’s even better than book one!

Sometimes it feels like the second book of a series – one that follows the same characters – is, in some ways, a fill gap to get to the next book, losing the momentum of book one, but that is definitely NOT the case here; every plot point, every scene, and every interaction among the main and secondary characters all play a role in moving the story forward, in illustrating the growth of its characters, in revealing answers to some of the questions asked in book one, and in adding more opportunities for readers to truly understand all the players involved in a game that continually changes based on the secrets and truths that are revealed.Ā

Because Brandy continues to show readers new aspects of the Brayshaw brothers and their queen, Raven, we start to see who each of them is at their core, unveiling a depth to each one that has slowly been formed and reformed by other people’s presence in their lives. Each character’s growth is gradual and there are scenes where readers see hints of the ā€˜old’ versions, but then, soon after, we’re given key insights into who they’re becoming and what that means for those who work with them and against them.

Maddoc, Cap, and Royce have an unbreakable bond that was shaped by the fact that they chose to be brothers…to create a family that may not be blood related but have each other’s backs above anything else. These three bring both strengths and weaknesses to the Brayshaw moniker, but where one of them has a deficit, the other two more than make up for it, proving just how essential they are to one another. And even though readers only get Maddoc’s perspective throughout the course of the story, through their words and actions, it’s easy to understand who Cap and Royce are and what they’re willing to do for one of their own, and because Raven is now one of them and has planted herself in their lives, everyone around this foursome both fear and stand in awe of them, wondering exactly what Raven’s role is and how she managed to gain these boys’ respect and protection.

Raven continues to be the amazing badass who readers were introduced to, and based on the extreme situations she gets herself in as well as is forced to endure, she more than proves what she’s made of, what she’s willing to do to protect her guys, and why, regardless of her affinity to run, to not allow anyone close, and to not look or be weak, she’s exactly where she’s meant to be, where she belongs, and where her Madman and his brothers will keep her despite other people’s desire to bring them and her down. I’m in awe of Raven’s tenacity…her ability to tell it like it is…her ability to hold her head high no matter the situation. She’s truly one-of-a-kind, unmatched in every way, and that’s what will see her through the maelstrom circling around her…that and the three guys who won’t see her used as a pawn.

In Trouble at Brayshaw High, it becomes clearer the number of chess pieces that are in play in this high stakes game, but there remain a bevy of unanswered questions. Every character seems to have an ulterior motive when it comes to the Brayshaw Boys and Raven, especially those who believe they run this town and all of its happenings. But here’s the thing, nothing seems to be occurring according to a specific plan because there are too many variables to work around, which means that those who are supposed to be pawns are the real game changers, making everything unpredictable and illogical, and a primary reason for it is a trio of guys who are no longer boys but men who won’t be dictated to…who will not roll over and be pressured into something that they don’t want to do and when it comes to a certain sassy, strong, and independent girl who has come to mean everything to them, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do to protect her as she has protected them.

The continuation of Raven, Maddoc, Cap, and Royce’s story is everything I hoped it would be and more. Meagan Brandy seamlessly crafted and laid out the plot line, offering readers necessary revelations at just the right moments and holding back certain details that still need to be sorted and pondered before they can be brought to the surface. One aspect of the story that I appreciated the most was that Brandy didn’t add any unnecessary drama into the story line. Don’t get me wrong, this book is definitely angst filled but all of the dramatics are warranted and help to shed light on how manipulative some characters are and everything that Raven is up against in this new world she lives in and wants to remain in, proving that she belongs so much more than people are willing to admit.

It’s going to be a struggle waiting for book three to release, but knowing where Maddoc, Cap, and Royce stand at the end of Trouble at Brayshaw High will allow me to endure until Meagan Brandy takes her readers back to Brayshaw High.

Excerpt

I slammed the faucet off with my elbow and reached past him to tear a towel from the dispenser, which I crinkled up and dabbed at my palm. The rough paper scratched and irritated my sensitive skin, turning it an angry red. Turning me angry red.

I let out a frustrated groan, then whirled my exasperation on him. ā€œWhat are you even doing here?ā€

One of my pre-planned talking points came rushing back at me in the beat that followed. ā€œYou’re stalking me,ā€ I charged. It was supposed to have been an accusation with weight, meant to have been thrown at him when I innocently discovered he was at the same banquet I was attending, and how dare he! Much the way it had come across when he’d said it to me at Orsay.

Now, spat out so sourly, it sounded lame and desperate, probably because I was lame and desperate.

Grinning like a cat that had caught the canary, Edward gently took my hand in one of his and pulled the blue paisley square from his front pocket with the other.

ā€œAm I?ā€ he asked, the raw timbre of his voice oddly soothing. ā€œStalking you?ā€

ā€œYes, you are.ā€ Rapt, I stared as he patted my palm dry with the handkerchief. I was shaking. Could he see that? Could he see how his touch seared into me? How it boiled? How it burned?

ā€œThat’s cute that you think that. I’m not, obviously, as this is my event, which, of course, you already know.ā€ He wrapped the printed material around my hand, fashioning it into a bandage. And if your presence here is an attempt to hint that you expect me to court you, I shan’t do that either, so get over yourself and accept my offer.ā€

ā€œYou’re the one who needs to get over yourself. I’m not interested.ā€ I jutted my chin out as if to dot the i of my disinterest.

Or to bring my lips closer to his.

He was already so near, his mouth only inches from mine and so tempting. As tempting as it was off limits, because I was certain it was. Even more tempting because it was off limits.

I wasn’t conscious of leaning in, wasn’t aware of the physical movement that brought my face to his. I only knew that there was this thing that I had to have, had to have badly, and that thing was his mouth pressed to mine. That thing was the taste of him on my tongue. That thing was the aching relief of his kiss.

My lips moved slowly against his with a cautious sort of eagerness, coaxing him open with a hint of my tongue. There wasn’t a question—my mouth was there, taking whether he gave or not—and yet, it felt like begging. Felt like I was pleading with the very shell of my soul to let me in. To kiss me back. To kiss me well.

RELEASE PROMO AND EXCERPT: JUST ONE OF THE GROOMSMEN by Cindi Madsen

Addison Murphy is the funny friend, the girl you grab a beer with—the girl voted most likely to start her own sweatshirt line. And now that one of her best guy friends is getting married, she’ll add ā€œgroomsmanā€ to that list, too. She’ll get through this wedding if it’s the last thing she does. Just don’t ask her to dive for any bouquet.

When Tucker Crawford returns to his small hometown, he expects to see the same old people, feel comfort in the same old things. He certainly doesn’t expect to see the nice pair of bare legs sticking out from under the hood of a broken-down car. Certainly doesn’t expect to feel his heart beat faster when he realizes they belong to one of his best friends.

If he convinces Addie to give him a chance, they could be electric…or their break-up could split their tight-knit group in two.

Hiding the way he feels from the guys through bachelor parties, cake tastings, and rehearsals is one thing. But just asTucker realizes that Addie truly could be the perfect woman for him—he was just too stupid to realize it—now she’s leaving to follow her own dreams. He’s going to need to do a lot of compromising if he’s going to convince her to take a shot at forever with him—on her terms this time.

Excerpt

He took hold of her hand and ran his thumb over her knuckles, and corresponding zips fired up her arm and twisted through her core. ā€œBut you’re a softie, Addison Murphy.ā€

ā€œSay somethin’ like that again, and I’m gonna push you in for reals.ā€ It came out too breathy to effectively scare him. Not that she thought many of her threats scared him anyway.

His low laugh danced across her nerve endings. ā€œWouldn’t you miss me too much?ā€

Obviously he was kidding, but her eyes met his and her thoughts turned literal. She’d already missed him for two years, and if she ruined their friendship by pushing for more, it’d almost be worse than missing him, because she’d have to do it while living in the same town. ā€œI really would.ā€

Using his grip on her hand, he drew her in for a hug and she let herself relax into it. As much as she could, anyway, considering her whirring thoughts and racing heart.

The quiet crept in again, neither of them moving. As if both of them were scared of what might happen if they said or did the wrong thing. Or maybe she was alone in that. The more she thought about the complications that would come about if she told him her feelings for him were growing stronger—and in a totally not platonic way—the tighter the band around her chest became. Fear took over, whispering how crossing lines could ruin everything between them, and then she’d lose him all over again, but for good this time.

It probably makes me a coward, but I can’t risk it. Too much could go so very wrong. Ā Ā Ā Ā

Addie broke the hug, glanced at the water, and steered the conversation down a side street. ā€œA few years ago, we went to visit some of my mom’s Yankee cousins, and one morning while we were there, I woke up to a scream that made me shoot right out of bed. I seriously thought I was rushin’ toward a crime scene. My cousin had gone to take a shower, but there was a spider in one corner. I grabbed a tissue and killed it. Then I told her at least you could smash a spider; if you stepped on an alligator all he got was mad. She seriously looked at me like I was from the backwoods.ā€

ā€œYou are from the backwoods.ā€ Tucker swung his arm, encompassing the lake and the shadowy trees along the shore. ā€œExhibit A.ā€

ā€œWell, counselor, I prefer to think of it as the front woods.ā€ She shivered as the breeze kicked up a notch, and Tucker rubbed his hands up and down her arms. He noticed so much, and she couldn’t help wondering if he could see right through her. If he already knew she’d been warring with her feelings for him.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW AND EXCERPT: The Moth and the Flame by B.B. Reid

blog tour banner-3.jpg

The Moth and the Flame by B.B. Reid

Release Date: May 20, 2019

Blog tour-2.jpg

The Moth and the Flame, the second romantic standalone in the When Rivals Play series by B.B. Reid.

THE FLAME

Here lies Louchana Valentine. She was a homeless, orphaned virgin.

I never cared what my gravestone would say until I landed in deep with a powerful gangster. Lucky for me, my best friend happens to be ruthless too. I should feel guilty that he’s forced to turn on the man who’s been a father to him. Except I’ve always known that Wren’s soul wasn’t as black as he claimed.

He was good.

He was beautiful.

He was mine.

He just didn’t know it yet.

And with Wren keeping me safe, I’ve got time left to rewrite the end of my story. But if he has his way, virgin is already carved in stone.

THE MOTH

I’ve never known anyone as alluring as Lou. Or as frustrating. Since the night she saved my life and stole my wallet for her troubles, I couldn’t stay away.

She became my onus.

My light.

My…anyway.

With nowhere to run, I’m forced to trust someone I never expected. At least with Lou safe in Blackwood Keep—far away from me—I’ll die with my conscience intact. Because she no longer looks at me with friendship in her eyes. Those iridescent blues shine with a different need entirely, and I’ve never been able to deny her.

It is strongly advised that you read The Peer and the Puppet before diving into The Moth and the Flame. Content suitable for ages 18+.

My Review

ā€œā€˜I’m the moth to your flame, Lou. I’d rather be burned a thousand times than be free of you.ā€™ā€

This quote epitomizes Wren and Lou’s relationship from the first night they meet in B.B. Reid’s latest release, The Moth and the Flame, because regardless of all the reasons these two should go their separate ways: Wren’s ties to Exiled, their differing ages, the lack of control they seem to have around each other, and the immature antics that are perpetuated due to their respective jealousy, these ā€˜besties’ share an ā€˜invisible, unbreakable, and incurable’ bond that draws them together and refuses to release them despite the fact that when Lou finally ā€˜sees’ all that Wren is, she’ll finally know why he strove to protect her, even from himself.

It’s understandable why not many people around Wren and Lou understand the dynamics of their relationship. It’s quite a bit confusing given how adamant Wren is that they are nothing more than friends even if he acts like a jealous boyfriend anytime another guy shows interest in Lou, running them off before any of them can take her innocence away. Some would likely suggest that it’s completely unhealthy and dysfunctional given how possessive they are over one another and the steps that they both take to get each other’s attention, even in the most childish of ways.

It’s easy to forget just how young and naive Lou is when she and Wren meet, and even through the years the story takes place. Despite her smart mouth and independent nature as well as the struggles she’s had to endure, there is still an innocence about her that Wren refuses to take. The scenes where Lou exhibits her immaturity by acting like a spoiled brat and throwing tantrums when she doesn’t get her way, especially when it comes to what she wants from Wren, I actually found myself saying aloud ā€˜grow up,’ but then I took a moment to look at the bigger picture and realized that she’s actually acting like any normal teenager would, which is exactly who she is even though she’s had to grow up quickly and learn how to survive on her own because that’s the only person she ever really trusts.

I swear Wren has the patience of a saint, and while I will admit that at some points I wanted him to just give in to his feelings for Lou, give in to her constant pursuit, give in to how desperate he was to claim her as his, Reid hints at and illustrates concretely exactly why he can’t and won’t take something from her that she’ll never get back, and to me, that says more about him than any other thing he says or does for Lou.

I adore friends-to-lovers’ story lines, especially ones like Wren and Lou’s – a slow burn relationship for a number of reasons, which amps up the angst and also keeps readers wondering when they’ll finally go all in and become more complete than they’ve ever been. Lou’s age wis definitely a point of contention for Wren, but it’s so much more than that, and it’s those complications that B.B. Reid slowly reveals, clearly proving why, even though it just about killed both Lou and Wren as well as readers, the path that Reid puts her hero and heroine on is the one that is most beneficial for them, that allows them both to fully understand every step they take towards one another, and that’s what I held onto as I was going out of my mind for these two to finally figure out their crap and be together!

What I appreciate the most about B.B. Reid’s storytelling is that she crafts a unique plot line, going beyond stereotypical elements as well as quintessential character qualities. She creates such multifaceted characters – ones who are far from perfect and have both strengths and weaknesses as their story continues. I’m enjoying the heck out of Reid’s When Rivals Play series, and I am absolutely intrigued by the next couple in line for their story to be told!

Blog tour-2.jpg
Excerpt

Lou didn’t awaken when I climbed through her window, weary and angry, late the following night. My prediction had come true. I’d gone back to Blackwood Keep, and against my better judgment, I confronted Danny Boy.

Or rather Ever McNamara.

Heir to a multibillion-dollar hotel empire.

And the only son of Thomas McNamara.

Surprisingly, what bothered me most wasn’t Danny Boy or his double life. Something about his father had seemed familiar to me. As if I’d known him in another lifetime.

I shook my head as I toed off the black and white striped Adidas Lou had picked out, swearing the sneakers almost made me look normal. I snorted, and with a moan, she shifted in her sleep causing the sheet covering her lower half to slip dangerously low. Before I could rethink it, I ran my fingers over the curve of her naked hip now bare to me. Thoughts of Ever McNamara fled to the recesses of my mind as I marveled at the smoothness of her skin.

It was a surprising contrast to her hardened demeanor, but I always knew it was a front. She was a pillar, no doubt standing tall and appearing strong, but one day, her cracked foundation would crumble, and I’d make damn sure I was around to pick up the pieces.

Even if she didn’t want me to be.

There were times when she didn’t appreciate just how seriously I took my role as her best friend. She claimed I acted like her father rather than her friend. If that was what she called making sure no one ever hurt her again, then sure—I’d daddy the fuck out of her.

Another moan slipped from her lips when my fingers reach the edge of her frilly blue panties, but this time, it was the sound of my name on her lips. For a second, I panicked, thinking she’d caught me perving on her, but when her even breaths continued, I realized she was still very much out of it, and a smile slowly formed as my fingers dipped lower.

ā€œWhat are you dreaming right now, Lou?ā€

Her breath seemed to catch as I continued to toy with the seam of her panties.

ā€œAre you dreaming of me?ā€

She sighed in response.

ā€œYou are, aren’t you?ā€

A low whine escaped her.

ā€œI know what you’re after, little Valentine. I’ve known all along.ā€ We both seemed to stop breathing when my fingers dipped beneath her panties and I felt her smooth skin. ā€œHow can you be sure you can handle me when I haven’t even kissed you yet?ā€ I swallowed, cursing myself but then decided to allow myself honesty. At least this once.

She was writhing now, attempting to relieve the ache I knew was building, but we both knew it was useless. Nothing short of getting me inside her would ever do.

ā€œYou want to come.ā€ It wasn’t a question but a statement of fact. ā€œBut you don’t get to come. You’ve been bad, Lou. This is how I’ll punish you.ā€ I freed my fingers from her panties and stepped back. As if I’d snapped my fingers, breaking her from my spell, she jackknifed from the bed, breathing hard and looking around in confusion. When her gaze pierced the dark and found me, I remain perfectly still, my hands already in my pockets, pretending my fingers weren’t burning with the memory of her soft skin.

ā€œWren?ā€

My eyebrow rose. ā€œYou expecting someone else?ā€

My Review

How can something real come from secrets and lies?

That’s the question that Addison Pierce is left to struggle with once she learns who Oliver Blackthorn after her body and her heart were already his.

In Ava Harrison’s latest release, Deceit, she crafts quite the tumultuous love story – one that will hurt readers’ heads and hearts as they witness Addison and Oliver’s sizzling chemistry followed by a series of revelations that destroy a connection that could have been everything they had ever wanted in a partner.

In my opinion, Addison and Oliver’s story would have been a much different one if Harrison wouldn’t have allowed readers to be privy to both characters’ perspectives, especially when it comes to Oliver’s secrets. I don’t think I would have understood why Oliver chose to hold back the information that he does or what was at stake for his family if not for the ability of hearing his internal musings as well as just how real his feelings for Addison are.

Addison’s stubbornness was a bit of a point of contention for me when it came to her unwillingness to hear Oliver out and her extreme tunnel vision when it came to moving on from Oliver and everything she felt for him before she learned the truth of his deceit. But while I did struggle with Addy’s words and actions at times, I did appreciate her honesty and her independent nature and Harrison does illustrate the evolution of Addie’s character extremely well.

As a reader of romance – one who loves her happily ever afters – I’ll admit that I struggled with the amount of time that Oliver and Addison remained apart; logically, I understood why Addie cut ties with Olly even without the kind of closure needed, but I wanted them to sort through all of the secrets and lies and be as open and honest as they can be in order for them to move forward together.

Despite the fact that Oliver had his work cut out for him in order to fix things between him and Addy, he never gives up, even when it seems that there was no hope for anything more than regret.

Readers better hold onto their heart and emotions as they traverse through the rollercoaster that is Oliver and Addison’s story; there are so many ups and downs and twists and turns that it’s unclear up until the very end if what began under false pretenses is something worth fighting to get back.

My Review

How can a couple combat against time and its fleeting presence?

How can a timeless love transcend years and decades, leaving the slightest of traces even when the lovers are apart?

How do soulmates from different eras, living much different lives, remain together when it’s clear that time isn’t and has never been on their side?

Throughout Calia Read’s Surviving Time series, readers have traveled back in time with Serene witnessing her attempts to acclimate to her ā€˜new’ existence, to learn the culture, the language, and the dynamics that she had been thrust into, and we’ve also journeyed forward to present day and the deep sense of loss Serene felt at returning home and leaving Ɖtienne, the other half of her heart, behind, desperately doing all she can to get back to him by any means necessary. And, as in most time travel story lines, Read has expertly shown that actions have consequences and the ones made in desperation can cause a ripple effect that redefines the parameters of the lives of so many people.

With all of the twists and turns that occurred in The Reigning and the Rule, I truly didn’t know what to anticipate in Echoes of Time, but the title alone indicated that

Serene and Ɖtienne’s biggest adversary, Time, would make things even more difficult for the couple who refuses to lose each other and who would willingly sacrifice everything for love.

Serene and Ɖtienne’s past, present, and future are so tightly intertwined that there’s no doubt that Fate wants them to be together, but fate is fickle, at times, and time has its own agenda, making it impossible for these two to combat everything they need to without altering things in the process.

With Ɖtienne now in the present with Serene, a new set of complications and troubles arise, and it remains unclear exactly what they’ll have to fight through in order to remain together. It’s interesting to see the modern world through Ɖtienne’s eyes and his struggles to grasp the new technology as well as present day amenities that he has not clue how to use. Ultimately, though, their biggest concern is not Ɖtienne fitting into contemporary society, but what will be altered due to their need to be together at all costs.

Because Echoes of Time is the conclusion of Serene and Ɖtienne’s timeless love story, I knew that my reading journey would be filled with a multitude of complications and conflicts, but, in the end, I trusted that Calia Read would bring everything full circle for her characters and her readers, and I can wholeheartedly say that she did justice to a love that survives time and distance.

Snagging a date? Not a problem. But one that meets my special requirements?

As the premier best-man-for hire in all of Manhattan, I promise discretion, so when I need a plus one for a couple of ā€œI dos,ā€ she needs to be A-Plus in reliability.

Fortunately, I have a brilliant solution in asking my best friend’s sister to go on my arm. Truly is my good friend, too, and I trust her completely. Just look how discreet she’s been about the time we spent the night together. But, it was only once, and it was months ago. We’ve been the souls of restraint ever since. I’m sure we can make it through these weddings without banging each other in the limo.

Probably.

Plus, she needs my help with a business proposal. A little I’ll-scratch-your-back-you-scratch-mine doesn’t have to lead to the bedroom, right?

Good thing we know our way around the friend zone. The treacherous, torturous all-too-easy to slide out of friend zone…

Instant Gratification is told from the hero’s POV, so if you loved Big Rock, Mister O, or Full Package, you’ll devour this new standalone rom-com!
