My Review

I’m a huge fan of Samantha Young’s storytelling; she crafts emotionally rich stories with multifaceted characters who change and grow dramatically as they face the issues that surround them and deal with the complications that arise as they work for their happily ever after.

In Young’s newest release from her Hart’s Boardwalk series, Things We Never Said, she gives readers Dahlia McGuire and Michael Sullivan’s

second-chance love story – one that spans more than a decade of time spent apart as they face the past and deal with the fallout of their decisions as well as the loss, grief, drama, and guilt that weighs them down.

Dahlia and Michael’s book is quite an angsty read, which makes sense given the events that transpired between them when they were younger as well as the reasons behind Dahlia’s return to Boston and the frustrating and heartbreaking confrontation that ensues.

There’s a lot for Dahlia and Michael as well as readers to unravel as they toggle between the past and the present, shedding light on how they developed feelings for one another and the impossibility of their love lasting due to extenuating circumstances that break both of their hearts; then from there, we gather insight into the reasons behind Michael’s frustrated and callous behavior when Dahlia heads back to her hometown and then the steps he takes to make things right after she leaves his life, yet again, returning to her quiet life in Hartwell, Delaware.

It’s made abundantly clear that Dahlia can no longer runaway from her past and from everything that happened to estrange her from her family – it must all be confronted and dealt with, and it’s not going to be easy because there is a lot of anger and resentment coming at her from a number of people. But the fact that she accepts the mistreatment and works to repair the relationships that were torn apart illustrates the kind of person she is and what she’s willing to do to make things right for everyone involved.

I have to admit…I found these two quite frustrating, at times, because they weren’t completely honest with each other or themselves and they didn’t talk things through enough to make one another understand the choices that were made. But I held onto the fact that the love between them never truly left…it just laid dormant, waiting for them to stop merely existing and start truly living.

Things left unsaid fester and scar in ways that people would never imagine and that’s exactly what happened to Dahlia and Michael, which means that forgiveness is necessary for both of them to move forward, hopefully together, but unless things are said that need to be said and issues explored, understood, and forgiven, they’ll not be able to truly find their way back to each other, even though that’s clearly what they both want and need.

Things We Never Said is a slow burn, highly emotional story, which makes sense given all that must be dealt with, both individually and together. But by the time everything is laid bare between Dahlia and Michael, readers will understand both sides’ feelings and be able to see why they made the decisions they did, even if they knew exactly the kind of fallout it would cause.

My Review

Eli King and Peaches Taylor’s long-standing feud illustrates why they love to hate each other and why they’re more frenemies than anything else. There’s a long history between them of pulling pranks and sabotaging each other’s lives in any number of ways, which only amplifies their current situation given that they’re vying to purchase the same bar and neither of them is willing to relent one iota because they refuse to lose out on their dream of owning the bar they’ve both worked at.

The push and pull between these two is evident from their very first encounter and the fact that they ultimately have the same end game makes things even more tenuous for them. Both Eli and Peaches are extremely stubborn, which means that as much as their lust for each other seems to be obvious to onlookers, they won’t admit anything and refuse to give any ground to the other, which means it’s war between this alpha biker and spitfire and either could end up the victor because that’s how much they both want to win.

The back and forth banter between Eli and Peaches is quite comical and it builds up the sexual tension that surrounds them because neither one is willing to stop pressing each other’s buttons or to let go of their past antics and bad behavior, which means that when these to finally do give into their need for one another, it’s going to be an epic explosion of pent up feelings and desires.

I really enjoyed reading Eli and Peaches’ story, but I did wish more details were given and further discussion about their relationship was provided. This might be due, though, to the fact that I haven’t been back in Wylde’s Reapers’ world for so long and because it’s one of the first biker romance series that I read that started my love for all things bikers that I wanted to spend more time with the Reapers until the next story is released. Either way, Eli’s Triumph is a sexy, humorous, and heartfelt read that allowed me to re-enter a world I adore!

“Eli?” she asked, sounding confused. “Why are we talking about Eli?”

“He’s been watching me.”

“Um, I think he’s just drinking a beer,”Megan said. “Maybe checking out your boobs a little, but that’s nothing new.”

Hmm… It couldn’t possibly be that simple, but it did give me an idea. Maybe it was time to create a diversion. I shifted my shoulders, expanding my chest.

Disappointingly, his eyes stayed on mine.

“Someday I’m gonna own this bar, and firing his ass is the first thing I’ll do.”

Megan giggled. “That sounded sort of super-villain-ish. Do you have a lair? I wish I had a lair…”

I blinked, caught off guard. I hadn’t realized that I’d said the words out loud. Eli smirked at me, gloating because he’d just won our little pissing contest. Dammit!

“I can’t believe I wrote to him in prison,” I told her, turning my back on the bikers. “Never should’ve been nice to him. He probably thinks that, deep down inside, we’re friends or something. We’re never going to be friends.”

“Didn’t he give you a ride home after work last night?” she asked, her voice light.

“Gus made him,” I snapped.

“And did Gus make him hug you the other day?”

“He caught me and gave me a noogie. And it hurt, too. It’s not a hug if it leaves bruises.”

“He left bruises?”Megan asked, startled. Shit. I might be able to justify a rumor about him not being able to get it up, but telling her that he’d hurt me for real…yeah, that probably crossed a line.

“No,” I admitted. “That was an exaggeration. But he’s still pure evil, so don’t fall for his shit. Or sleep with him. Every time a waitress sleeps with him, she ends up quitting without notice. Then I have to cover their shifts.”

Megan nodded, looking a little uncomfortable. “Okay, then… Um, I think I’ll go check the bathrooms. Make sure there’s no ugly surprises before things start getting busy.”

“Great idea,” I told her, and she scuttled off. Then I reached for a washcloth because I had lemon juice to clean up. Then I’d have to go back over there and check on them. See if they wanted more… Eli would, I could already tell. Not because he was big on drinking, though.

He just wouldn’t be able to resist an opportunity to order me around.

My Review

Monica James’ new release, Bad Saint, is an apt moniker for Willow and Saint’s story, and as the plot unfolds, readers learn how Willow became the fierce fighter that she is, why she refused to play the victim from the moment she was taken, and how her inner strength gave her the willpower not to break, even when that’s exactly what her captors demanded of her.

Even though the events that happen to Willow on her honeymoon are truly frightening, they don’t quite capture the full gravity of her situation; there have been people orchestrating her abduction, working behind the scenes for reasons unknown to Willow and readers, to ensure that the kidnapping occurs exactly as planned and as her days of captivity head into the double-digits and small clues are provided as to why it occurred in the first place, what we do learn is that Willow’s kidnapping is part of a much bigger plan, and it seems that not even Willow’s main captor has a choice in what’s going to happen to Willow once she’s handed over to the man who bought her and who plans to make her his slave.

Monica James masterfully explores the unusual dynamics of Saint and Willow’s relationship as he prepares to make her submit to his every desire and works to mold her into a compliant submissive. And while readers get the entirety of Saint and Willow’s story solely through her perspective, the additional insights that are provided at the beginning of each chapter help to provide much needed information from a person whose stake in this situation is more significant than anyone realized, and it’s these details that allowed me to see what both sides are fighting against and for and what that means for the bond that Saint and Willow are forming regardless of the fact that he’s to blame for her disappearance.

The further into the story I got, the more questions I had and the more information I needed to unpack, so when I finally reached the end of volume one, the situation didn’t seem any less confusing, especially with what’s revealed in the last few pages, which means that I need volume 2 as soon as possible so I can figure out what the newest revelations mean for the angel and her ‘bad saint.’

My Review

Toni Aleo’s Nashville Assassins are back, but this time, it’s a new generation of hockey stars and the women who become just as important as their professional hockey careers. In Dump and Chase, book one in the spin-off series, readers get Shelli Adler (Shea & Elle’s daughter) and Aiden Brooks’ (Lucas & Fallon’s son) story, two people who have known each other than entire lives, and during that time, Shelli’s crush on Aiden has only grown while Aiden’s kept his distance from Shelli, remaining focused on his professional goals, not contemplating what a relationship would be like between them because that’s not something he’s ready for and won’t be for some time.

One night together changes everything, or so Shelli thinks, but what Shelli forgot is that Aiden’s sole focus was and remains hockey, which means that if she truly wants him, even after he’s forgotten her and treated her like just any other one-night stand, she’ll have to show him why she’s worth the chase, especially after she dumped the puck on his side of the ice.

Shelli Adler is an amazing heroine, which makes complete sense since she has such kickass parents. Shea and Elle will always hold a special place in my heart because they’re the couple who started my obsession with Toni Aleo’s Nashville Assassins and led me to so many of her other stories. She’s an incredibly strong woman who refuses to continue to pursue a man who claims he doesn’t want her but she’s also not afraid to show her softer side…to allow those who mean the most to her to truly understand how she feels and how she views the world.

I’ll be honest…it took me quite awhile to warm up to Aiden, and even towards the end of the story, I wasn’t 100% in support of his goal to claim Shelli and his coveted career. But he did chase her when it mattered most, which was exactly what I had hoped he would do, so his determination to have Shelli in every way possible and the fact that Shelli wanted him just as much meant everything to her so I had to give him a pass and hope that he would stay the course and understand that a life without love, family, and friendship isn’t a full life, even if he had his stellar hockey career.

The Nashville Assassins are all about family and that idea shines through in every single book about this amazing hockey team and the people who surround it. I loved catching up with past characters and couples, and I can’t wait for book 2.

My Review

After her fiancé dumped her over a year ago, McKenna has not been too keen on accepting any kind of relationship proposal, but that doesn’t mean she’s not ready to get her dating groove back. So when she runs into Chris – a hunky geek who has one heck of a proposition for her – she attempts to fight her attraction to him and keep things strictly professional, because neither of them are willing to mix business with pleasure or risk messing up the good thing they have going with their Webflix show.

Here’s the thing, though…because readers are privy to McKenna and Chris’ internal musings and true feelings for their co-worker, we see what’s happening between them long before they do, which makes sense given their working relationship and the fact that they’re both a little gun-shy and have trust issues when it comes to the opposite sex.

But I was just waiting for these two to finally give into what’s been building since their first interaction because, in my opinion, it was never a matter of if but a matter of when, they would realize that finding the right person, even if they work with you, is worth the risk.

Lauren Blakely’s comedic prowess shines through with the amount of humorous situations and laugh out loud moments that are included in McKenna and Chris’ story. The smile never left my face as I was reading because these two were just too damn cute for words. Their quirky banter, electric chemistry, and instant connection never wavered, even when their fears tried to take over. And with the bevy of jokes strewn throughout the text, The Dating Proposal is a laugh out loud romantic comedy that was just the light and sugary sweet read I needed.

“What other games do you like?” Hot Guy asks, and something about the question startles me. Maybe because it’s so normal, and he seems legitimately curious. Then there’s the simple fact that we’re having a conversation in the middle of an electronics store.

“Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly,” I say with a completely straight face.

He picks up the cue easily, raising an eyebrow as he asks, “Clue?”

“Of course. And it was always Professor Plum in the library with the candlestick.”

“Interesting. Because Miss Scarlet was pretty wicked with that rope in the ballroom, if memory serves. What about Chutes and Ladders?”

“Let’s not forget Candy Land either.”

“What was your favorite candy destination in that game?”

“The vintage game, right? Not that new King Candy imitator?”

“As if I’d even be talking about that game,” he says playfully.

I’m about to answer when he puts his hands together as if he’s praying and says in a whisper, “Please say Ice Cream Floats. Please say Ice Cream Floats.”

I laugh with the kind of mirth I haven’t felt in a while, the kind that radiates through my whole body and turns into a huge grin. “Of course. I wanted to live in Ice Cream Floats.”

“I was all set to build a chocolate and licorice home in Ice Cream Floats. And this reminds me that I need to stock up on the classic games too. But I don’t think they sell them here.”

“I came here because Gadgets, Gizmos, and Geeks is closed, and that’s the only place nearby that actually fixes hard drives.” I put on my best sad face. “I was the victim of a cat hard-drive attack.”

He pretends to be taken aback. “I’ve heard of those. How awful.”

“It was terrible. Fur, claws, and metal everywhere.”

“My condolences. Hopefully you at least caught it on camera so you can post it on YouTube?”

I snap my fingers, aw-shucks-style. “If only.”

“Next time.”

“Or perhaps next time I will do a better job making sure the hard drive is out of his reach.”

He shrugs confidently, quirks up his lips. “Can I see it?”

“Um, sure.” Does he have a thing for broken hard drives? I reach into my bag where I have the drive and show him the silver device with the cracked end.

He surveys the damage. “I can fix it.”

I give him a quizzical look. “Seriously? You can fix a hard drive? Do you moonlight as a computer-repair guy?”

“Not exactly. I can fix pretty much anything.”

“That’s impressive.”

“Want me to try?”

I study his face, trying to figure him out. “You really want to?”

“I do. Yeah,” he says, as if he’s digging the prospect of repairing the damaged device. “I really enjoy that kind of challenge. It’s kind of like a game to me.”

But I don’t want to hand over a hard drive to a total stranger. “Actually…”

He smiles, raises a finger. “And I bet you probably don’t want to give your hard drive to a total stranger.”

I shrug, a little embarrassed. “Sorry. But you can’t be too careful.”

“I hear you completely. But this is simple. And…” He inches closer, reaches into the pocket of his jeans, and dangles his keys. Is he going to take me for a ride? “I have the tools right here.”

I blink, surprised. “What?”

He waggles the keys, and I spy a tiny little tube that looks like it holds screwdrivers.

“You carry computer-repair tools with you?”

He smiles casually. “You never know when you might need them. I also carry a Swiss Army knife. I read 101 Things a Navy SEAL Knows.” He glances out the window of the store at Chestnut Street, teeming with pedestrians. “And I also know the café next door makes a killer espresso. I’ll fix it while we get a cup of joe.”

Cup of joe! That’s almost like a date!

I mean, it’s not a date.

Obviously.

But it’s training-wheels time. Talking to this guy as he fixes my hard drive might help me prep for when I go out with Steven from Madcap, the Lemonhead Guy, Nathaniel from Julia’s bar, and the other men I hope will come knocking on my door—not literally—once my dating prowess improves.

“Sure,” I say, with probably way more enthusiasm than the prospect of a repair job and coffee deserves.

There’s a big bonus to this cuppa. I’ll get to look at his handsome face while he fixes it. I mean, I’ll look at his hands, because the sight of a man using a tool is super hot.

“By the way, I’m Chris McCormick.”

“McKenna Bell.”

He extends a hand.

We make contact, and there’s something about the feel of his strong hand in mine that kind of turns me on. Maybe it’s the firm grip, or the way his eyes light up as he smiles. I want to tug him closer and plant a hot, wet kiss on his lips.

Nothing will happen though. He didn’t ask me on a date, and I didn’t ask him either.

But it can’t hurt that I’m thinking slightly naughty thoughts. It’s evidence I’m getting my groove back.
